Also keep in mind that with domestic vehicles the value of the used vehicle is very much dependand on what the equivelant new vehicles are selling for.
If a new Colorado with the same equipment level as your vehicle are selling for 17,000 or 18,000 dollars then who in their right mind would pay 10,000 dollars for a used one with a 100,000 miles.

Lets look at cars.com shall we.
There is a 2000 S10 LS ext cab for sale around Phoenix with 97,000 miles. They are asking $5,988.
No matter how nice your S10 is and no matter how much service records you have I doubt you are gonna trick someone into buying it off you for $10,000.
5,500 was overallowing on their part and 2,500 was maybe 500 under what it was really worth.
In my short search just looking at S10s from 2000-2001 in that area with between 65,000 and 112,000 miles you are looking at this spread.
10,900 for a 2000 4x4 LS crew cab with 79,000 miles. That is at a dealer.
Low end was 4,000 dollars for a 2000 S10 with 90,000 miles from an indvidual.
Your truck falls in between those two outliers.

There are plenty of them around and I think all LS S10s were V6s anyway.
The main problem with all of the online guides is that they do not take into account mileage as much as they should.
A 100,000 mile old vehicle is worth a lot less then a 60,000 miles vehicle but the online guides never dedut enough for mileage.
They do ok if the mileage on a vehicle is about average but many times the mileage they say is average is too much as well.
An extreme example would be..
a Mercedes with one year and 5,000 miles of warranty left is worth thousands more then the identical mercdes that is 2,000 miles out of warranty.
Repeat that for all european vehicles.
IF the car reads in kilometers, then the cluster must be replaced. That makes the car TMU.
Ask yourself this, what would YOU pay for such a truck?
I know my answer, and you definitely wouldn't like it.
If Kelly or Edmunds is quoting big money on your truck, you should call them up and offer it to them for that price.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
First, the LS style is only an appearance package. And I don't think there is such a thing as a GM vehicle with 70k or 100k that has a warranty.
Second, the models with a v6 engine are much less common than models with a four. My guess is that about 80% of all s10's of that era have the four cylinder.
If you search for models with a four cylinder you will find many more examples and be more able to determine the value based on condition and options etc. I agree that researching only similar v6 models would be the way to go but there just aren't that many out there to search for. Also there are a ton of them that are fleet vehicles. I have never seen a fleet s10 with a v6.
If the cluster is never changed (AFAIK, it doesn't have to be changed), then mileage or kilometerage is known.
If the cluster is never changed (AFAIK, it doesn't have to be changed), then mileage or kilometerage is known.
When it looked like the cluster would have to be changed in our Dodge the dealer told us that from the day the cluster was ordered until it was installed the truck had to stay there in a locked yard. This was because they ordered the cluster with the exact mileage as the cluster in the truck to avoid a TMU situation.
There are lots of canadian trucks up here and all are converted to miles and none are TMU. They have a sticker on the door from when it was done and the kilometers, the mileage is exact on the odometer.....just in miles now instead of kilometers.
I have no idea about other cars, but I would guess VW is not the only one doing this.

What do you all think I can get by selling or trading in this car?
Location: Southeastern Ohio (Athens County)
Year: 2001
Make/Model: Ford Taurus SES
Color: Silver ext/gray cloth int
Options: ABS, power driver's seat, CD player, alloys
Mileage: 116,000 (Vulcan 3.0 engine)
Body Imperfections: couple "quarter-size" clearcoat peel spots on driver side front fender, clearcoat peel on front bumper, paint fade on drive side front fender, small spot of paint fade on right rear corner of rear bumper, couple tiny dings, couple scratches, a 3" long side swipe on the left rear door (from a kid who opened his door while I was moving through the parking lot), and that's it.
Interior Imperfections: 1 small cigarette burn, and a small crayon stain in the backseat. Otherwise, excellent condition.
Maintenace: I have ALL receipts from when I bought this car in Jan '05 - EVERYTHING! Oil changed religiously every 3,000 miles w/Synthetic Blend, Transmission flush every 30,000 miles, coolant flush, brake flush, power steering flush, fuel filter replaced every 30,000 miles, air filter replaced every 15,000 miles, spark plugs/wires/PCV valve and throttle body cleaned at 90,000 miles. New Bridgestone Turanza LS-T 80,000 mile tires @ $500 that are 9,000 miles old, new front rotors and pads, alignment every 6,000 miles, and tires rotated/balanced every 3,000 miles.
Other: Used 89 octane fuel for optimum performance and less pinging (primarily used BP/Amoco). Car makes no noises and interior has well held up. Everything works. Car has been very reliable and I have had it for 16 months now and have put on 59,000 miles in those 16 months. Car still shines when cleaned and looks "sharp".
Gas mileage was 22-24 city/mixed and 28-30 highway.
My payoff on this car is $5,700.
What do you all think I could acheive out of this car?
Looking to buy a either another used Taurus (05-06) for dirt cheap (see them all the time for $9-$13K w/20K or less on them), or maybe a Honda Fit, Scion xA, Toyota Yaris or something smaller but comfortable, cheap, and 35+ MPG.
THANKS!
- Alex
Maybe $3500 retail.
The miles are a killer, plus the fact that you can get a recent Taurus dirt cheap.
I know my wife would really like leather and Navi. . .and until we get out there and test drive we are going to keep an open mind. I even threw out the idea of a CRV SE and buying an aftermarket Navi. . . which she is open to.
We are not in any rush. . .any and all ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Grrrrr.....teen-agers......
Pick up the current issue of Excellence. It contains a market report on 911s of that vintage. The report also lists the advantages and disadvantages of each model and year.
Could be less if there is an accident report in the carfax.
Also, I would NOT get this car as your only daily driver. If so, you might find yourself in a tough spot somedays as the car is in for routine maintenance or the "once a year issue" that is generally inevitable. I'm sure you've been told but Porsche crap i sexpensive just because it has the Porsche name on it and along those lines, Porsche mechanics generally charge more as well and are hard to find. You might find some that say they work on Porsches but "saying" and "knowing what you're doing" are totally different things.
I say go for it but just have the above things planned for and a good mechanic picked out. ALSO, DEFINITELY get a different mechanic than his to doa prepurchase inspection. You can talk it over with him how in depth you want to get(leak down tests, etc) but atleast you can gauge the depth of their knowledge by talking with them.
Enjoy!

Seriously, though, this is the kind of thing we need Terry for... not an easy car to pace I would think... if he doesn't come up with a number soon, I'll try to dig some up... but it ain't the same.
Good thing it's not a stick; I happen to be in funds for that sort of thing, and not too far away. That's what I need; more temptation.

Typically people that own them have several cars and so spread their driving around them. I just got into this with a guy who wanted to trade in his 7 series from 2001 on a Range Rover. It had a little over 70,000 miles which for a 7 series is very very high. The 7s have huge depreciation anyway and combine that with the two high miles and he was looking at 16,000 to 16,500 tops.
His response, "That is ridiculous I could turn around and sell it on my own for 26,000 dollars." Even after I showed him that dealers were only asking low 20's and sometimes high teens for 740s with over 70,000 miles he was still adamant that he could sell it for at least 26,000 dollars.
To get into the $26,000 range for a private party sale you have to have 50,000 miles or less.
Retail, $10-11,000.
If the car is in nice shape.

One dealer today gave a "soft appraisal" just by walking around the car...11,950 was the upper end of what we'd get, he said. 11,500 more likely. He found our car in several very small books and also looked it up on the computer (KBB?)
Volkswagen Passat GLX 4motion V6 Wagon 2001 (not 2001.5 as far as I can determine), blue anthracite
alloy wheels, leather seats, power sunroof
68K miles
bought new from dealer in January 2001
(summer 2003, I think one of the axles was replaced, no documentation)
Dec 2003 VW roof rails added
July 2004 new coolant temp sensor
Aug 2004 new water pump and timing belt
Nov. 2004 new "comfort and convenience control module"
Jan. 2005 new Goodyear tires (first replaced Aug. 2003)
Feb. 2005 new cam adjuster gaskets and valve cover gaskets
May 2005 new rear brake pads and rotors
June 2005 new rear 02 sensor
June 2005 new front brake pads and rotors
Aug. 2005 new battery
So, based on that I think your dealer is quite generous.
CHICAGO $10,800 45,786 BLACK 6G A
SAN ANTO $12,400 56,737 BLACK 6G A
BAY CITI $9,800 82,176 SILVER 6G A
CADE $5,000 95,107 SILVER 6G A
SKYLINE $8,300 97,790 GREEN 6G 5
MANHEIM $9,750 97,887 GREEN 6G 5
BAY CITI $8,650 112,234 WHT 6G
If the car is really nice, and were it me, I'd try for $11,900 at least briefly... but you have to be prepared for a sale at $9,800 two weeks later.
This is a game of chance; few people want to pay $10 for a ten-year-old car, and those who would like a 3 series convertible for that kind of money will find the pickins slim indeed. So if there's one guy who wants it, you'll be fine, and if there are two, you'll be rich...
Good luck, and please let us know how it turns out.

I will be trading in my 2003 VW Reflex Silver Passat GLX 4motion sedan soon. The vehicle has 36k miles and is in good condition. I have a nice size dent on the rear passengers side door (looks like it just needs to be popped out). Still have two original tires on the vehicle. The other two were purchased later on (flat tires, etc) and are not stock. The brakes have always been crappy since I bought it new although the dealer tells me they're fine when I get my maintenance done. I have filed one insurance claim - was involved in a hit and run. Car was parked on the street and someone nailed me pretty good. Both the drivers side and rear drivers side doors were replaced with original VW parts. Car runs fine and is in good condition.
My questions are:
What would be a fair value to expect from a dealer?
Because of my insurance claim, will the title on my car be salvage, etc?
I reside in the Chicagoland area.
Thanks for any insight.
Good luck,
-Mathias
