Not to get off on a tangent, but there was a person here from CA that "dissed" Terry....saying his RWTIV were all purposely under market value since he was a car dealer....almost to the point of being insulting. Won't mention names because it looks like that guy (hopefully) went away.

Great idea! Only, the one guy who ever gave us all consistantly great advice left. To say it leaves a "vacuum" on this board is probably an understatement......so I think discussing it is fairly relevant.

There are amateurs here, & a couple of people in the Car Biz, who do give very useful info., but let's face it, it's not the same. I don't blame Terry for bailing, but I still think posting a "farewell post" would have been good........& eliminated most of this speculation.....

Believe it or not, 03 Altima's w/ mileage in the 60's are going thru Manheim between 10-11,000.

04 Gr Cherokees w/ your mileage are doing @ $11,000 @ Manheim.

So, if you can trade for near even up, its not a bad deal.

Over the last three months, I have seen the price of 2004 Base Impalas (3 years old) raise from about $7800 to $9200 from one of the major leasing companies. OUCH!!

Im thinking that now might be a good time to buy a V8 SUV because they are unpopular now due to high gas prices. I have an 02 Explorer XLT V6 4wd with 70k miles in very good shape but I will need more power to tow a tandem axle trailer I will be buying to haul construction equip. I like the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Hemi and am wondering what an 05 ought to be selling for and what I could expect on a trade in for the Explorer.

Color: Dark Gray w/two tone black and gray leather

Options: None except CD changer - these cars were fully
equipped (heated seats, stability control, moonroof, etc.)

Condition: Nice though not perfect with original paint and clean Carfax

I've gotten trade numbers from three Ford stores on a trade for an '06 Mustang GT: $12,800; $12,900; and $13,500. This last number seems to me like all the money there is for this. Does anyone have any recent auction numbers or otherwise care to opine? Thanks!

We traded in a 1999 Dodge Ram reg cab V10/auto 4x4 dually not that long ago. The truck was low miles.......54k, but it was starting to look its age. Dented tailgate, scratches, inside of the bed was dented up pretty good. Spray in bedliner, red/grey cloth interior, paint looked good, interior was in good shape. SLT Laramie, pwr windows/locks/cruise/air, am/fm/cass. Truck ran well, no issues, tires deep in tread, windshield cracked.

Anybody want to take a guess as to what it was worth?

All I know is I don't miss the gas mileage......OUCH!!! :sick:

Its not the car lots that are getting me, its my little brother who works for a salvage yard. Our current fleet includes a 1997 Chrysler Sebring with tree damage runs great though, a 1997 Ford F-250 Powerstroke with tree damage runs great, and (2) 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins trucks.

I really hope we are done for a while, we are out of parking room!

The search for a commuter car continues and I'm now checking out civics. Prices are all over the place and even edmunds and the popular guides are all different. Looking at two this week in Ft. Lauderdale area. '01 EX sedan, 50K, silver w/ gray cloth, auto tranny, sunroof. The other is an '02 EX sedan, 40K, beige on tan cloth, similar options. Also, what is the price difference between an EX and LX model of the same year with similar miles.

Go with the 02 Civic. The 01 was the first year for that bodystyle and had a few, not major, teething problems. Additionally, the upgraded the suspension in 02. The price difference between the LX and EX is usally $1000 or less.

my friend thinks she can get $13k for her car, because kbb said so. i tried to convince her otherwise...so all you folks out there, what do you think?

2003 honda civic coupe EX with alloys
80k+ miles
a few accidents (front end, side fender, etc)
tan exterior with tan cloth interior
i cant remember if it has a sunroof or not, i want to say it doesnt...
aftermarket stereo (not that this means anything value wise)
lets say tires are half worn, same with brakes. oil changes and maintenance up to date.

any thoughts?

80k miles kills it. As do the accidents.

If the repairs have been made (you say accidents, but don't say if its been fixed). And if its an automatic ... I'm feeling she may get $8500 selling it private party, if she's lucky.

What KBB is she looking at? They peg it at $7500 trade-in (i'm using Fair condition based on its history). Yeah, it says almost $13k for full retail, but that's ASKING price FROM A DEALER and with NO ACCIDENT HISTORY! A more realistic asking price from a dealer on that car is probably in the $10k range. And I'm sure they'd take $8500, as well.

So this is my assessment as a nonprofessional.

Yeah I was thinking 8,000 or so private party and trade in hmhh depeneds on the area. Maybe 5,000 trade in if it is had the damage repaired well.

yeah, i figured that it had the moonroof after i posted, but you all would know anyways ;-)

yes, the damage has been fixed. it looks ok, but i wouldn't call my eye trained when it comes to assessing car damage.

i am pretty sure she looked at kbb retail, even though i told her that doesn't make sense. she'll be pretty upset when she realizes her car isnt worth 13k. when she told me that was the number i was dumbfounded. i told her that wasnt right, but like always, people fixate on the highest number and they don't stray, even if that number is wrong in the first place.

oh, and british, this is in CT - completely forgot to mention the location!

Tires - 8/32" remaining all around on staggered summer tires
Brakes - 30,000 miles remain according to the computer.
All maintenance done on time.
No damage until yesterday. MSRP on the car was $34,xxx when new.

Looking for trade-in/PP/retail values before the wreck.

Hey, hey you are in luck. I looked at basicly this exact vehicle today. We put 24,000-25,000 real money on it. Keep in mind that in the north east our values for RWD vehicles are already starting to slide more rapidly because of winter coming up.

Maybe another grand down your way real money on the trade side.

In places that have a real winter, do cars with 4WD go up in trade value seasonally? Or is there a slight premium on that feature year-round?

In the height of summer 4WD vehicles take a pounding just like RWD and convertiables take a pounding in the winter.

I wouldn't say that 4WD vehicles go up during the fall and winter but their values fall less quickly. I guess a good way to think about it would be to think about value as a function over time that always has a negative slope. In the winter that negative slope for 4WD vehicles is not as steep. In the summer the values fall more quickly.

Sorry about the accident.

I would talk to you local dealership and explain the situation. They would generally helpful in giving you documentation which would allow you to negotiate with the OTHER insurance carrier. They would be pretty up to date with the LOCAL market.

Remember that in KY the measure of damages is the difference in value before and after the collision. That allows you to make a claim for the reduction in value that a car suffers after an accident.

Thanks for the heads-up! In a perfect world, I'd be to recover the fair value of the car without having to go through any of the repair process. I want to meet with the adjuster--after he arranges some sort of preliminary estimate, I'll try to scout out some rebuilders who might be interested in buying it.

I'm not trying to be snarky, but 825 S.W.2d 284 seems to have a different interpretation (and has been followed)... (As an aside, my relative wrote that opinion.)

And, right now at least, I'm dealing with my own insurer, not his. I'm keeping notes of occurrences and promises they have made in case I need them later.

Any thoughts on a used wagon? Basically looking to spend no more than 12,000. Already have a Subie and would like to get something else. Are used volvo and audi wagons the same in terms of reliability? Am I looking at 2000 or 2001 wagons or would I have to buy something older? What should I pay for one of these with reasonable milage? Is a 2000 Audi or Volvo reliable enought to be a daily driver? Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

P.S. I am not willing to drive a Taurus.

Depending on options yeah. The base MSRP was 112,000 or so.

I don't think any sedan in the world depreciates as fast as a 7 series. Excluding the exotics and near exotics at least.

My gut tells me upper 50,000s but that is just my gut reaction without doing any research.

Rob, a good way to see where you will be if you want an Audi or Volvo wagon is to check ebay.

My niece and her husband just bought a 1994 Lexus LS400 for $7,500 with only 50,000 miles. It looks like they got a wonderful deal as similar cars in Ebay have a "buy it now" price of $8,500-$9,500 or so with low, low mileage.

If the owner doesn't put a "buy it now" price, it's a little hard to tell what they really want for their car until the car meets the reserve price.

Just my .02 worth of an opinion.

I paid $45,600 for mine with decent options (21k miles, 19s, gray on black). i guess my 7er is prob going for abt $38k at wholesale
