I'd go new if I were you then.

Actually $43,000 isn't that bad of a deal on the X5. I'd peg it at about a $40K or so wholesale vehicle... so $43K isnt outrageous at all.

Problem is, some of these super late model, super low mile hiline cars are worth an awful lot...

Thanks for the input. Maybe I should just wait for the 2002 X5 model to come out, and then try to get a new 2001 at a couple thousand under MSRP. Sound reasonable?

No rroyce, it is an auto BLACK. I must have missed the mystique green thing??? But thanks for your reply!

......... $43ish is not a bad deal, I think you can haggle a little right now "maybe" another $1,000 off .. maybe.

Bill is right on the figures, another month or so, you will see them go up a little because of the season change --- I'm driving a 4.4i now that I picked up in May, and in another month I will through it in the paper for a quick sale ...so if your still lookin' ...
And now, there is enough of them around, so the dealers will be discounting them on the new side. Try not to get too excited about all this "Certified stuff" ... you are better off negotiating the deal without the $1,500 BS warranty.. and shopping through Edmunds or someone else, and saving another $1,000 off any type of vehicle, it does not help the resale...

What $ does this look like?

95 Acura Integra LS/SE, roof, leather, alloys, 3 door, automatic, original cassette, green/tan, with 26k ORIG MILES, very clean (maybe a ding or two). A friend of mine (58 year old female) is thinking about trading this on a Civic (prob EX sedan). I think she'd probably do OK at a Honda dealer with an Ac, but probably better in the paper. Will the ultra low miles make that big a difference? Thanx.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Low miles makes a difference, and ultra low miles makes a "big difference"... Depending on the vehicle and the area.

Let's just say your vehicle had 60K+ on it right now, it would be worth in and around $7,500ish more or less. With your vehicle having 26K on it, and it being a SE, I wouldn't be surprised if a dealer is thinkin' a strong $9,000. "But" it needs to cleaner than the "Board of health, and twice as sanitary" --- and needs -0- across the board.

    I hope this helps..

    Hello,
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1995 Honda Prelude VTEC. It is black with leather int., ADULT driven, 48,000 miles, non-smoker owner. Person wants $10,500 for it. Is this reasonable? Also, is this car reliable as are other Hondas? Car has not been "modded".

    Thanks,
    Scott
  • mmcbride1mmcbride1 Member Posts: 861
I wouldn't put a lot of faith in "adult' miles. I'm an adult and I drive my A4 pretty hard...
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
I haven't seen the car in a while, but the original owner and virtually only driver is the aforementioned 58 year old woman, no hot-rodding, modifications, etc. It's in a Chicago suburb, Integras are common in the city, not so much in the burbs.
I'm gonna go to the dealer with her again (I talked her into the Ac and out of a dealer-loaded $19k Civic coupe in 95 to begin with) and we'll see what happens. Thanx again.

I am interested in trading or selling outright my 2000 Chrysler Town&Country LXI van. Options include AWD, Leather, Heated Seats. 42K miles. Excellent condition except for tires.

Edmunds, KBB, NADA list values anywhere from $16K to $23K for this vehicle. What is a realistic trade #?

Possible replacements included 2001/2002 T&C or Honda Odyssey.

....... Hi Scott .. ! -- Preludes are still very popular, and the V-T's are the most popular.

"If" this a very clean vehicle, no parking lot kisses, the interior is sharp and clean -- air is freezing, and there is no need for tires or any type of work to be done, this is a fair price for an Auto. If it's a handshaker, you can negotiate some.

    Maybe this will help...

.......Ooooh, lot's of miles on this little trail blazer, and you need some rubber to go with, no help there. ( non - Limited ..? )

Soooo as it stands, it's a AWD, that's a big help, and of course it's a TC LXI with all the "stuff" .. the vehicle is worth something in and around the $17ish+ figure ( real money ) if it's a Limited, it's closer to the $19ish+ figure.. that's if this is clean, not much in the way of the "drive through invasion" and, you can still see the carpets from the fries .... l...o...l...

These are great vehicles and I have always liked these, I feel you will do better with a new TC than a Honda because of all the rebates and such -- Honda's get all the money right now, not because they are the greatest, but because they are so "few" and a large demand is in swing ...

    I hope this helps...

I will be purchasing a new car soon. I am wondering what my Saab is worth, both trade-in and retail. It's black w/ tan leather (front seats are little worn), V6 with 90K, manual and all maintenance records, a few dings here and there otherwise drives and looks excellent and everything works. I am the 2nd owner and lives in Texas. Thanks all!

    Has it ever had Paintwork?

Is it a manual or an automatic transmission? And a 5-door or 3-door?

    TIA

It has never had any paintwork or accidents and it's a 5 door hatchback. Manual transmission. Thanks Bill!

Hmm... Looks to me like wholesale ought to be somewhere around $3,500-4K or so...

So figure clean it up nice, do a well-worded ad in the paper and ask $6,950/bo

You ought to be able to sell it for close to that I think.

I have a dark blue 740iL, with only 20K miles, BMW certified warranty through Oct 2004, condition I would rate as very good, a couple of minor knicks on the bumpers. I live in the New York area. Can anybody advise me what is a realistic trade in value? I am the second owner, I bought it from a BMW dealer off lease.

    Thanks in advance.

....... " If " this bad boy is super clean, knee deep in rubber, interior looks showroom as well as the exterior.. it's blue ( no help there ) ..

If it's extremely nice ( it's got no miles ) --- I'm sure the dealers will be in and around that $35,000ish+ figure, and perhaps a little more ...

Very straight and clean (but dark green).
    97,000 miles.
    Good tires.

    Learned Friends,
I'm currently driving an old Ford Aerostar, and happily so. It's worth nothing, it runs great, my "commute" is a couple of miles, and our two-year old loves playing in it. My wife drives a small truck, and that's okay, except it only seats two people, so if the van were to break down for a few days we'd be in trouble. Well, while the weather is still good, it doesn't matter; I bike a lot...

Solution 1: I'm on the waiting list for a new Odyssey. But I don't want to drive a $25k new car. Turns out the Mrs. doesn't want to, either. We've never had car payments, and we don't want to start now, even though we could afford the car.
Solution 2: All we need is a spare car, basically. Any semi-decent hooptie will do. And it's gotta be cheap enough not to warrant collision insurance, for instance.
All this just to give you the flavor.

Now, how to get one?? The cars in the paper are typically overpriced by a factor of two or so, because people have no clue on the car business, but they can call their credit union and get the "blue book price". Good grief. "I know what it's worth" -- ever hear that one?

So how about this: I drive to one of the bigger new-car operations, talk to the used-car manager, and ask if they took anything in trade they're waiting to take to auction, and if they would make me a deal on an older GM front driver. Ten-year-old Buick Century, '93 Lumina, '89 Celebrity in good shape, whatever. But it should be under $2K for sure; no more than $2-400 over auction value, and they don't have to clean it up for me.

Do the pros around here think that might be a reasonable approach? I realize the only way to find out is to try it, but what's your feeling? Has anyone tried this themselves? Anybody been on the receiving end?

    Thanks in advance,
    -Mathias

looking for a $2000 car, and really discouraged looking at new car dealers used lots filled with ten year old cars that cost $5000. Personally, I'm going the want ads route, at least here (Chicago) we have a saturated used car market, so generally people put cars in the paper for a bit more than what they were offered in trade, just to get rid of them. I think there's a lot of leg work involved here, and of course luck and timing.

I'm not in the business and hadn't considered doing what you suggested, but I guess it's worth a try; the worst they can say is 'no', right? I would think at least sometimes they're happy just to get rid of the cars they might take to auction, or if it's something clean enough to put on the lot, maybe you can buy it before they do the run-through and detail or whatever. Let us know how it goes, if well I may do the same thing next week when my $ is right.

.... I have to admire your tenacity ..

Most dealers have particular wholesalers they deal with ..but, give it a try, it can't hurt. I have on occasion, had a guy walk in and say "hey I will give you ABC for that vehicle" and I will think "hey why not" ---- As long as the consumer .. knows and understands that the vehicle is bought-AS IS- ..Nothing Owed, and Nothing Promised --- etc , etc, ...

Also some food for thought -- Have cash on you ..! whether you are buying a $2,000 vehicle or a $20,000 vehicle. It would surprise people, if I told them how many times I have purchased a vehicle from a private owner with good old American Ca$h --- It's funny what you said, about all the people who think they know what their vehicle is worth -- " I called my Credit Union and it's worth XYZ or my Bank said it's worth ABC --- It just kills me ..l...o..l...

Gee whiz, did the Bank know it needed tires , a timing belt and the air hasn't blown cold since Reagan was in office ..? ...etc -- But many times, if you pull out $$$ and drop it on their table and let them feel, touch and smell it --- everything becomes just a memory...and their Bank, Credit Union or worse yet, their UNCLE who use to be in the business -- go's bye bye ...try it .!

    Good Luck..

Tenacity my foot... I used to buy lots of used cars in the $1-2k neighborhood and sometimes below... I work at a National Laboratory, and every year there's a dozen new people showing up, grad students, post docs etc., many from abroad. And back before I had a family and a house and all that, I just couldn't stand the thought of little Takashi from Japan, or Theo from Germany, with his cash on him, waltzing into a dealership and get the "treatment". Often people with little money, and tons of work to do at the lab, it just wouldn't do..
So I'd scan the ads, make a few calls, and then take them to check out the car. Must have bought two dozen jalopies this way over six or seven years, and I got really interested in this whole car business.

One time, I almost bought a $5k, 3-year-old Cavalier in good shape from a dealer, but the inspection turned up that the engine was shot. The haggling on that thing was super easy, because (they said) they'd just taken it on trade and hadn't even cleaned it up yet.
Well, I was so mad, I sent a friend of mine a couple days later to see if they would try and saddle him with that heap, too. Turns out they didn't, so I assume they really hadn't known the engine was trash.

That "learned" me two things: (i) car dealers often won't inspect a trade-in all that carefully -- "looks good to me, will look good to the next guy"seems to be the norm, and (ii) there should be a way to get the cheap cars that a new-car dealer has to wholesale off because he can't have them on his lot. But you have to find someone you can trust to make it work. Given the steady stream of potential buyers we get at work, we really should be able to set something up.
The REALLY good deals that I got or know about are the cars you get from friends and acquaintances, when they'll get $900 on trade on their ten-year old, well maintained car with the rust spots, and they'll sell it to you for $1100.

Open the newspaper want ads, and you're just dealing with the flakes again... I don't have time for this anymore! Heck, one guy started screaming at me because I politely told him I wouldn't be buying his high-mile 4cyl Caravan -- beautiful shape, very clean -- because there was motor oil dripping clear out of the tail pipe!!!

As far as cash money -- of course! Once I coached a lady friend so that upon a sign from me, she'd pull out the wad of green at the right point during the negotiation. Worked, too...
As my grandfather used to say: "Bargeld lacht" -- cash money laughs.

Sheesh. Now you got me started...
    Peace!

I am looking for a used luxury sedan and have opted to look at Infinitis. Done the homework and test drives on the I30 and I30t models. I found one with 50k for mileage and was a trade in. The dealership is a pretty classy one, though I will still have another mechanic check it out before I make ANY offer.

#1 It is a used vehicle
#2 I have already been approved for up to 15k loan
Q: Where do I start my offer? I have looked up Edmunds.com and Kelly Blue Book
I have seen calculated Trade-in prices, Private Party prices, and Dealer prices. For a '98 (if the engine checks out ok) I only want to spend 14k...as I have yet to still figure in tax, license and registration. The dealer has listed the car 3x @ 20,995, 19,995 and in the paper
17,995. There has only been 1 or 2 listed in the classifieds for over a month now. Private party is not a real option at this point in time.

ANY FEEDBACK, EXPERIENCE OR ADVICE ON THIS MAKE ETC...I WOULD LOVE IT!!!

1990 Corolla 4 dr. Deluxe sedan, only 66,000 miles, automatic. AM/FM stereo, casette. Car in good to exc. condition, no rust through, 35-40 mpg on highway. New tires & battery <1 year. Regular maintenance.

Would any dealer do a trade-in on an 11 year old car?

Or would they simply laugh me off the lot?

If not, can one hope to get the Kelly $? $2100?

....... Hey, I know a producer from Saturday Night live --- You are funny, and I mean that in a nice way ...

It can be a little exasperating, on your end..and mine.

Many consumers will come into my stores, with just enough information to hang themselves -- as my grandfather used to say, " a little information is dangerous -- and too much is not enough " ---- That's why I recommended taking cash on a purchase.
I got interested in a Benz that had been in the paper for about 6wks, so I called the guy, and checked it out, nice vehicle etc..He laughed at my offer.. but, he was asking the moon, ( and then some ) so, I waited another 2wks ( still in the paper ) - time was running short, because his new Benz was just a day away..but, he wouldn't get of this mind bongling price -- So, I go over his house on the way to an auction, and dropped the cash on his coffee table and said -- Hey, I'm on my way to buy 10 cars today, not 11, so here is the money that I think it's worth -- He says, "Well the day not's over and the Ad is still running" -- Oh well, I'm off to buy some vehicles "see ya"...

He calls me back 8 hrs later and says, "come pick it up" ... I said, I just dropped my offer by $2,500 --- he wasn't very happy but, that's how it ended..

That silly point is, just as my Grandfather used to say " You can be a Lion..and You can be a Tiger -- But, never be a pig...

    Peace.

.... Sounds like a very nice vehicle -- If it's clean, and it needs nothing.

A dealer will take this on trade "all day long" -- But, I would recommend that you Retail this little hummer. A dealer will be in and around that $2,000 area ..maybe..( are you sure you are reading Kelly ..? l..o..l.)

But, clean it up -- make it look like a diamond, have all the service records on hand -- and run a 4/5 liner in the biggest newspaper in the area for let's say $3,995 and it will sell in a "Flurry" for $3,500ish..Clean, low mileage vehicles are hard to find anywhere -- and Corolla's are on the top of everyones list...

    Good Luck ..

    ....... So, you interested in a Maxima...eeer, I mean a Infiniti I30.

Well let's see, it's got 50K (ouch).. no warranty ..? I feel the dealer probably doesn't have much more than $16,000ish in it, and they are not certainly rolling off the New..or Used car lot's, so start em' up at $16,500 and go from there... Or , a loaded up Maxima SE or Gle for a couple grand less ...

    I hope this helps...

Terry: What does the term 'real money" mean?

Also does the salesman make any money off the trade-in?
What I mean is, if my trade is worth 4,000.00 and I ask 3,000.00
in order to get a better price on the new car, does the salesman
    see any of that 1000.00?

Any how many miles are on that Land Cruiser?? :)

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    OK...

"Real Money" is what a car is worth. I.E. If Kelly Wacko Book or another website or some VMR Guide says your trade is worth, say, $8,000 but they're running through the auctions at $7,000 and If I shop it to 2 or 3 other guys and they hit it between $6,500 and $7,000...

    Then that's the real $$.

Original miles are real miles. On older exempt cars, I'll sell and advertise them as exempt unless I have some kind of documentation to back the miles up. I.E. I am driving a (Dont laugh I love these things) 1984 BMW 533i 5-speed right now. I like it 10x better than the 98 740iL I was driving before it. It's showing 133K on the odometer and its' got "original miles" because I have service receipts backing it up enough that I feel safe in advertising it that way..

    Learned Friends,
I just posted this, and it seems to have vanished into the ether, so here goes again:
My neighbor's sister just bought a new '01 Camry and is looking to get rid of her old car. It's a '93 Corolla, DX I believe, 3spd auto, 170k miles, dealer maintained, runs very well, decent tires, ac works but barely. usual power stuff, no sunroof, no alloys. Car is clean with a few nicks and stone chips. Interior is a little messy, but would clean up well.
Color is a really bizarry brownish/pinkish/metallic mess. Oh well.
    This is in Mid-Michigan.

I basically already bought it, but now I need to figure out what to make out the check for... I do want to stay friends with them, too, so I'm looking for a realistic figure.

If someone traded this in at your store, where would you hit it?

    Thanks in advance

Another question I have is, I really like the salesman I am dealing with
but, I want a 200.00 to 400.00 over invoice deal on the new car. My trade is worth
4000.00 but I am willing to take 3000.00 for it. I want to take care of the
salesman, (do not get me wrong I do not want to put his kids through
college but I want to make sure he gets paid a decent amount for his time
spent with me) Does he see any of the 1000.00 I am not taking on my trade in?

Is it unrealistic to expect a dealer to give me $5500 for trade in on my 1994 Accord LX, 5spd, with ABS, "malachite green" at 96,500 miles? The car is in good shape, regularly serviced, just did major service, replaced timing belt, has a new radiator (the service people claimed the original one was cracked), michelin tires less than 25,000 miles, etc. It does have some noticeable chips on the front/hood from rocks, etc. The interior is okay - it just needs some detailing. So, is $5500 reasonable to expect for trade in? Thanks for any input.

I have ordered an Acura MDX and do not want robbed on trade. Our Sienna XLE has 9k miles, and every possible option:dual power doors, JBL, Roof, leather, towing package, running boards, toyota built in VCR and immaculate. MSPR was $35k and owned free and clear. My guess is private party $29k and trade in (real money since MDX is MSRP....)$26k--any suggestions.

Congrats on finding a car! Sounds good, especially if it's dealer serviced w/records, I think the color you're talking about is even all right, they sold a lot of those in 93-94. Those Corollas are $4-5k here in chitown, but your miles are definitely on the high side. I'd offer her like $2k and see if she bites, I doubt the dealer offered her more than that. If she does, sounds like an excellent deal.
