Well you are going to take a big hit from the mileage and another big hit from the standpoint of damage and then you are going to have to account that the dealer has to put the vehicle through service. And since it has been wrecked I wouldn't know exactly what was going on underneath the car and the goings on the chassis and such. I would give you about 5500.00 for the car that has had damage to it twice and needs an alignment.

    What's my Mini Convertible worth?

    2006 Mini Cooper Convertible
    115 HP 1.6 liter, FWD, 5-speed manual
    9,500 miles
Liquid Yellow exterior, black cloth standard seats with body-color accents on dash and interior door panels
Premium Pkg. (auto A/C, multifunction steering wheel w/cruise and audio controls, chrome line interior, on-board computer, Harmon/Kardon single-CD sound w/iPod adapter in glove compartment, center arm rest), Cold Weather Pkg. (heated seats, mirrors and washer jets)
Xenon headlights, front and rear fog lamps
Standard 15" alloy wheels, tires probably only 20% worn, max
Flawless inside and out (and I mean not a single scratch, ding, not a centimeter of curb rash, nothing -- non-smoker car, too), no accidents, no body or paint work at all

The Mini dealer I bought it from less than 8 months ago (and I understand I'm taking the biggest depreciation hit in the first year) offered me only $18,000 today, which sounds disappointingly low to me. I know I could get more for it in California than in Utah, and that it'd be worth more in Spring or Summer, but still -- Edmunds' trade-in/private party/dealer retail values (which I understand are only guidelines) for my area are $20,168/$21,734/$23,293.

Thanks for looking, and thanks in advance for your feedback!

    hey cobraboy, thanks!

its more than i owe on it anyways, and i don't plan on selling/trading anytime soon. im gonna pay it off (i owe just about $3k) and then drive it a bit more before selling/giving to my younger sister when she turns 16. while i love cars, i know better than to trade in every couple of years just because the latest and greatest is out. i just like to see if im still in the black with regards to what i owe vs. what it would be worth should i have to sell it for some reason.

other than the alignment, it hasn't had any frame damage, and it still looks really nice (considering whats happened! ouch!)

anyways, thanks for your thoughts! i used to sell cars for a couple of years, but i was never that good at appraising - too many factors to consider!

Just getting a baseline for the values, since I may trade up soon.

    DC/MD area
    '98 Subaru Forester L wagon/SUV/thingy
    2.5l manual trans, AWD
    93k miles
    Dark green exterior, beige interior
Upgrades: pop-out moonroof, Subaru 6CD changer, trailer hitch, bike rack, 16" alloy rims, set of snow tires also.
Tires brand new Falkien Ziex 512s
    Front brake pads also new.
    60k service complete.
Timing belt service due at 105k miles.

It has a couple of dings, a dime-sized one on the rear 1/4 panel that you hardly would notice, and some scratches on the front bumper that you probably would. Also some door dings, I seem to attract them like a magnet.

    Thanks.

    Thanks again.

Well, one just went thru auction in Utah for $20,000.
So, $18,000 is probably a little light.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Sounds like a $3-3500 wagon.
  • erics6erics6 Member Posts: 684
Online price $16,500 from the asking price of $18k. What do you think? I'll check it out this weekend.

    http://tinyurl.com/v7x77
  • cobraboy1cobraboy1 Member Posts: 69
Well lets see the ehicle would definitly go straight to the auction due to its mileage. which by the way is pretty good considering the car, basic instinct tells me that with the dings that need to be fixed and the sratches that are on the front bumper the car is worth about 2500.00/ However, with extra things like the bike rack and the low miles I would be willing to give you about 2900 for your trade seems to be about average. Hope this helps. :)
  • cobraboy1cobraboy1 Member Posts: 69
Your right, location has some bearing on the value of the vehicle. And according to my reports and what my boss said your vehicle was indeed low balled on the value when he gave you 18k. Your car is currently listed in autotrader for selling at 22k with 3.5k miles on it. It takes about 5-800 to put a vehicle through service and put it on the lot no matter what the condition of it is. and then you have to make a profit If I were the one appraising your MINI I would give you about 19,500. You really need to go back and ask for more. Hope this helped. :)
  • jbwestjbwest Member Posts: 16
I was actually guessing that $18K would be an approximate auction price, so if you know of one that went for $20K at auction, it really does sound like they undervalued it.

Thanks, volvomax! I really appreciate it. :)
  • jbwestjbwest Member Posts: 16
That certainly does help -- thanks for looking into it and getting back to me with that info, cobraboy! It's much appreciated! :)

    Juice,

No more Terry, but couple of the guys around here know their stuff and give good wholesale information.

I can't imagine you'd trade. Just sell private party. You'll have no problem finding someone. Going for that minivan now. ;-)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, I'm hoping for close to $5 grand so I think private sale is definitely the way to go...

    Hi all,

I am trying to get a better sense of the pricing of my 98' RAV4.
I tried all source of used car info like kbb and edmund but the price seems way lower than what everybody is selling. If my car is in GREAT condition (white on Silver, new breaks, oil change up-to-date), Low Milage (80,000), with a nice looking Jaos roof rack.

Should I try asking $8,500 for it???
    Any response will be appreciated.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
How do you know "what everybody is selling" for? Bear in mind that classified ads contain asking prices while the "books" you mentioned are talking about actual selling prices. There can be a big difference between the two. And that's not to say that the "books" are always right.

That said, your mileage is low and older Toyotas are gold as used cars. 2wd doesn't help. Price it where you want but, if doesn't sell immediately, be prepared to reduce your asking price.
  • bingo883bingo883 Member Posts: 9
    Thanks for your input.

I research on all car selling site including cars.com and most 98' RAV4 with low mileage like mine are selling at a higher price. Most are selling from "dealer" so I reduce the price already.
I thought now-a-day people goes for 2wd because of high gas price??? I am in SoCal by the way.....
Well, I will give it a try....
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Well, I don't think 2wd is going to be considered more valuable anywhere but, in SoCal, obviously, the price difference between it and 4wd should be narrower than in certain other parts of the U.S.

It sounds as though you know your market. If so, you should be able to get the best price you can. Good luck.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I think $8500 is all the money for that car.
    Wholesale is probably $5-5500.
Private party is usually $2 grand better.

You can always ask, and see what kind of response you get
  • bingo883bingo883 Member Posts: 9
Thank you both for your input.
I guess I will try $8200 and see what happen.

I traded in my 2004 Nissan 350Z with 31,000 miles for $18,000 to Audi. They threw it in front of their lot with a price tag of $27,000. I saw it sit on the there for about a month and then it disappeared somewhere. Doubt they sold it considering I paid $26,000 for it brand new almost 3 years ago.

Trying to figure out if I should trade, sell, or keep...

    2003 Mitsubishi Outlander
    Automatic
    AWD
"Pull me over and ticket me red" exterior
    Dark grey cloth interior
    45,000 miles
Factory alloy wheels, BFGoodrich tires with only 6,000mi
    Brakes - 30-40% left
    Power wndows, locks, mirrors
    CD player
"Appearance package" - Factory roof rack, rear privacy glass, and rear interior cargo cover.

Condition - up to date on all maintenance, a few small scratches (touched up), and maybe 3 dings (none larger than a quarter). Paint is very shiny and glossy (Detailed every 4 months). Interior is like new...I have kept huge, catch-all mats on top of the factory mats since I have had the car, so even the mats look grand new, and car is vacuumed weekly. No stains inside. Engine bay is just as clean as the rest of the car.

    Car is in North Carolina.

I bought this thing new in 2003, and for the last couple of years I've been checking the value from time to time, with great amusement. Anyone seen any auction numbers lately? I'm in NC.

    2004 Explorer XLS 4x4
    4.0L V6, 5 speed automatic
    46,000 miles
Dark Green outside, Tan inside, no third row
Power windows, locks, mirrors; CD player, Cold A/C
    Everything works
New ceramic brake pads, tires need to be replaced
    No damage/accidents
All records, all maintenance done (preventative transmission flush, full synthetic oil changes, etc).

Upon speaking with a Mazda dealer out in the country, about 25 miles down the road, they offered $12,500 sight unseen. I think that's being very optimistic and is likely to change on arrival, but I could be wrong. I owe $9,625.

Well book value on the vehicle in average shape would be about 15,000 or so but you want it to sell right? I would price it at about 14,200 and accept down to about 13,500. the dings and scratches are going to bee your biggest down falls, and people are going to notice that. Piece of advice: print up a sheet that shows average condition book value of 15k and tape it to your window right next to the sale price of 14.2k who knows you might very well get your asking price.

Dropping your price down to 14 show that you acknowledge that your vehicle is not perfect and that you are willing to compensate them for that and that will make the looker happy. :)
  • cobraboy1cobraboy1 Member Posts: 69
Well this all depends on how much you owe on that vehicle with what I would recommend that you do so I am going to leave that choice up to you.

If you decide to trade it in you will receive a hit for the touch ups on the scratches, yes we can tell when you have done that, and on the dings. I believe that when I lived in NC you had to have at least 50-60% of your brakes to pass inspection, maybe someone else can help me out with that fact, so you are going to need new brakes. IT is not a big SUV so that willhelp you a little bit. I would tell you to sellit on your own. you could probably ack about 8000k for it. If you trade it in you will only get about 6500 for it so the choice is up to you. Hope this was helpfull.
  • 1racefan1racefan Member Posts: 932
    Thanks -

It is actually paid for. It just sits in the garage (only drive it once a month or so), and I was thinking of selling it and buying something like a late 90's Miata (that I could buy for about what I sell the Outlander for) to tinker with, and only pull out when the weather is nice.

  • cobraboy1cobraboy1 Member Posts: 69
:surprise: That price that they gave you is VERY optimistic and I think that they are telling you taht just so that they can get you to come in to the dealership. Based on the info that you gave me without seeing it I would give you about 9,600.00 or about what you owe. book on the vehicle is 10k, but I would have to put new tires on it so that would take about 4-500 assuming that everything is ok. If after they look at it and they still give you 12.5k TAKE IT,because no one else will give you thatmuch.
  • cobraboy1cobraboy1 Member Posts: 69
Except for the mileage there seems to be a pretty sound vehicle, so after the hit for the mileage your are looking at 12k vehicle plus or minus a couple hundred dollars, I dont know how stick shifts sell in your area so there could be more of a hit.

Sounds about right. Back in July when we were considering a new Buick, I think we were quoted a value right in that range.

Theortically, I don't think we want to trade it for at least another year, but I'm starting to wonder how much more it will drop in value by then vs. what the remaining pay off will be.

    Great info, nonetheless.

Okay after thinking about it for a little while and it sounds to me like your vehicle is in good shape and you are in Cal so the 2wd is not going to hurt you. In fact it will only help you (better mpg). There is only one variable that was not accounted for, tires. If we firgure best case senario I would give you about 20k which is pretty close to book value. If we go with worst case senario which means we need a new set, and an alignment then we are looking at about 19,200 + or - a few hundred dollars. These are pretty good real world figures for a trade in to a dealership. Do not let anybody low ball you. If it were me I wouldn't accept anything below 18,500 for it.

I bought this as an ex-dealership rental/loaner in 12/04. Looking to "trade up" to a slightly used '06 Fusion and I'm curious what fair trade in and private party values would be. I know these fall in value like rocks so I am skeptical of the online edmunds/kbb values which seem way high. Fortunately my payoff is 2k.
