Thanks for everyone's input for helping me make an informed decision. I did purchase the vehicle for 12.7 and considering the miles felt it was a good deal. I'm pretty sure the miles were mostly hwy considering it's an 03. The car runs and shows very well with all original paint and no body work. I plan on keeping it for awhile and to enjoy hopefully trouble-free :).
  • duff333duff333 Member Posts: 41
Took it to the dealer and they offered $11,100. Then took it to Carmax and they said $13K. That's much higher (about $1500) than what Edmunds calculates.

As an aside, this is the third truck (2 others for friends)I've been involved with selling/buying over the past 2 years and for whatever reason Edmunds is typical way low in their valuation - -at least in these 3 instances. just a comment!

Not looking for an actual trade-in value so much as general guidance.

I have a 2007 Saturn Sky, fully optioned, with an automatic.
It's a 29k car brand new, and mine is less than 6 months old. I still owe 16k on it.

As I'm looking for a very fuel efficent, 5 passenger car or SUV, all the cars I'm looking to buy are in the 12k to 19k range.

What can I expect at a dealer? Are they unwilling to take my car in trade, with so much more value than what I'm buying... or does it not matter at all? I have no experience with a situation like this... help!
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
No, it doesn't matter as there are two transactions here -you are buying one car and selling another.

However, given the popularity of the Sky, it may well be that you could move this for more money privately (especially when the weather breaks).
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Sky was in short supply for a while, and still might be. It might be worth more than you think.

    Hi,
Looking for some ideas on a wholesale and a private party value for this one. It's my 84 year old aunt's Aurora. She is no longer able to drive, and the family has enlisted me to sell the car for her. Here's the details:

    1995 Oldsmobile Aurora
    Southern NJ
    65,000 miles
    Silver with grey leither
Only option it has is a sunroof.
Good condition, garage kept. No accidents. A few small rock chips on the front but nothing else notable. Interior is clean, no real issues, just normal wear.
New tires about 3,000 miles ago. All service current. According to her records, the front+rear brakes were done at 35k. Car stops fine now.

Any advice is appreciated. One of her neighbors is already gawking over the car, apparently he likes these things.

    Lubbock, TX
    2006 Tahoe Z71 (2wd)
    silver over light gray leather
    under 11k miles
only option was XM (no third row seats)
no dings, no dents, no paint, no collisons
    still smells new
leather, bose, 6d changer, heated seats, folding mirrors, hitch, 5.3 flex fuel, all the standard Z71 stuff
purchased in Sept '05 so half warranty remains
    Original MSRP $42k+
    trade $?
    Thanks :)

I've been following these the last few weeks with an eye toward picking one up. Low mileage Auroras of this vintage are difficult to find and can bring surprisingly good money in a private sale. There was a no-sale '95 with 50K on ebay a couple of days ago - bidding hit $6700 and did not reach reserve. It was a VERY pretty color combo. Another one with about the same mileage in a less attractive color just went for about five.

See if the neighbor is interested at $4500 or so. It should bring 4 on a bad day if it's as nice as you say.

It's worth next to nothing on a new car trade though.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
Personally, I was thinking closer to $5k. That is what I would look to pay for it if it was local here in Chicago. I just saw a '98 Aurora advertised with similar miles for $9999.

I like those vehicles a lot. Too bad its on the east coast.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Hard to say, prob somewhere between $28-30,000
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Oh, it might bring close to 5 but I was discounting a bit for the hassle savings of selling to a neighbor.

There was an super nice '99 with 38K on it that a Florida dealer sold recently on ebay for less than $9000.

Can someone please give me some sound advice?

    Here's my situation,

Current car: 2004 BWM 235ci sprt pckg
    milage 47k
    monthly pyts. $565
    interest: 5.25%
    balance: $21,872.03

Goal, sell or trade in BMW for cheaper car i.e. Honda or Toyota

just got approved for 20k from bank for another car loan. Loan good for 90 days

Should I sell the car privatly or trade it in?
I am saving money for the negative
I know I will get more for my car selling to a private party but I'm wondering if there are any benefits to trade in.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,441
Doesn't the Aurora price depend heavily on whether it has the V-6 or V8?

I don't remember seeing that in the description... I'd think the V-8 would bring an extra $1000-$1500 over the V-6.

There is really no benefit to trading it... You should get a lot more selling it on your own.. You might even break even.

Does it have the premium package? Xenons? What color is it? Automatic or stick?

One downside? Only 3K miles of warranty and maintenance left.. If you do decide that you don't want to sell it on your own, ask your local BMW dealer for a straight bid on the car. They could CPO it, and it might be worth a little more to them, than to the Honda or Toyota dealer.

    Sure could.

Today, I was looking at a 2000 Cadillac Catera with all the options 60k miles ... and the guy was looking for $6995.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
The '95 to '99 models all had the eight cylinder Northstar engine. No 2000 MY vehicle was produced. The '01s and up offered a 6 or an 8.
  • gussguss Member Posts: 1,167
If your state has a sales tax credit for trade in that could save you anywhere from a thousand to fifteen hundred dollars versus selling it privately.
  • frenchvfrenchv Member Posts: 42
    Kyfdx,

it has the sprt pckg, moonroof, auto, white, no leather, no pwr seats.

    what's CPO?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,441
Certified pre-owned.. The BMW dealer can sell it with an extended warranty..

I'd try to sell it myself first... Not having the premium package will hold you back some on price, but you may be able to get your payoff out of it..

Before trading it in, definitely get your BMW dealer to make an offer on it... The sport package and automatic is in your favor.

Well, trade in is @ $19000.
So you may have to sell it on your own to break even.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
    $21,872 and vmax says trade-in is $19k.

In my neck o' the woods, that $19k trade-in gets me $1330 in tax credit, effectively making the trade $20,330, which puts you about $1500 upside-down. Not too bad. I'd probably trade it in if I was faced with the decision

HOWEVER, WHY are you considering dumping it? A cheaper car?? $20k loan?? Ummm... why take out a $20k loan on another car when you owe just a hair over $20k on this one? Have you considered refinancing? Maybe it is just me, but I think I'd rather have a 47k mile BMW convertible than a zero mile Toyota Corolla.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,441
    That isn't a convertible... It's a coupe...

A convertible probably would be worth close to $28K-$30K..

Maybe that is where our disconnect came in before?

I'm re aligning my debts and expenses. I can no longer afford to keep paying $600 for a car pyts. Not including the fact that the warranty is about to expire on the Beemer.

I want to refinance but my FICO score took a dump and is hanging in the 560's argh!

Would a bank refi my car loan or purchase my car loan for a higher interest?

Currently the loan is at 5%. I know I would be paying more in the long term with a refi at a higher rate but it would lower my car pyts. Which will free up some cash and I can use that extra money to pay off some CC's.

Then after a year or so sell the car.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,441
If your interest rate is 5%, it would make no sense to re-finance to a higher rate, just for a few months of debt relief... That would just make things worse in the long run...

If you can come close to getting your payoff out of your car, then buy an Accord or Civic for $17K-$20K, then you will probably be much better off financially in the long run...

BUT... how much will your interest rate be? I'm thinking that you can get a better deal on a lease, providing you qualify, than on a straight loan.. Your credit score is going to be problematic.

Ok so forget the refi, I'm now looking at the 05/06 Accord coupe (I still want to enjoy what I'm driving).

I would love to lease but with a 560 FICO score can I qualify?

And yeah I'd like to keep the beemer but I have to pay off my CC's.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Unlikely that you would qualify for a lease w/ a 560 FICO.

I doubt you will save much at all (or Nothing) if you can only get 19K for your car and you're going to buy a 05/06 Accord.

If you think $600 is too much for you, it might make sense if you sell your car and buy a 1-2K beat-up car for now (temporary until you save enough $$). MY .02

Thanks in advance--Looking for trade-in value for the following

    Location: Raleigh-Durham NC
    Year/Make/Model: 2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE 4WD

    Mileage: 48,000
    Color: Dark Green, black interior
Major Options: Leather, sunroof, 6CD in dash, power seats/windows, pretty much everything but NAV
Condition: Good, minor door dings (smaller that a quarter)
Brakes: Replaced brakes and tires within last 18 mos
Maintenance: All factory recommended services completed and preformed by Nissan dealership
Other: Was in front end collision, about $5000 of damage, repair/paint is not noticeable to me although I'm sure a pro could tell
    Single owner, non smoker
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
ANY U/C appraiser will see $5k worth of damage.
    What does the Carfax say?
Unmolested, the car is probably worth $10-11,000.
If the repair is noticeable to a pro and if the Carfax shows the accident the value could drop to $6-7000.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
That big of a hit? Wow - I would expect those numbers only with a salvage title.

That's just one of the nice things about getting up in the morning - I learn something every day.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Well, it is really hard to say without knowing all the particulars.
Just because the owner can't tell the car has been hit doesn't mean someone else couldn't.
A bad Carfax is the kiss of death on a trade.
If the Carfax was good and the repair was professionally done, then the truck may be worth $8-9000.

I haven't posted at all since Terry went MIA, but have continued to follow the other experts on this board. The better half has decided it's time for a new car, and we're trying to get private party and trade numbers on this:

    2001 Lexus RX300 2WD
In Brunswick, Georgia (on the coast, halfway between Savannah and Jacksonville).
3.0 V6/ automatic (the only way they come)
    73,8xx miles
    champagne over tan leather
    dual power seats
    6 CD changer
    sunroof
tires have ~2000 miles on them
    auto climate
All the other Lexus goodies (no nav)
Lexus certified warranty to 100K miles
All maintenance done, current and records on the dash
Overall, in very good condition. Always a southern car, so no salt, winter or even sun fade or damage. Leather is clean, just had the full on super-detail job inside and out
No wrecks, paint work, clean CarFax.
I have an idea what it's worth, but want to see what the experts say. I'll go down Retail Rd first, and if no takers, get traded at a high end used dealer in Jacksonville.
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,722
spend few bucks on a carfax. see what it has. if nothing, maybe the repair will be noticed, maybe not. can't hurt to get an appraisal after that, anyway.

I was tempted to take advantage of Saturn blowing out their 2007 VUE's with 0% and decided to research my trade-in value. KBB has this at rock bottom - I purchased the 2005 in October of 2005 - so am I getting hammered because of this?

I am used to driving a car into the ground so resale values never bothered me that much, but I stand amazed that the Santa Fe gets such deplorable tradein value (according to KBB). I would love to hear that I am wrong. Please advise.

    Location: Philaelphia, PA
    Year/Make/Model: 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe
    Body Style: 4dr SUV
    Engine: 2.7 Liter
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 17000
Color: Black ext / Grey int
Major Options: roof rack, mud flaps (i.e. none)
    Condition:
One scratch on right side view mirror, some light scratches on passengers side (could prob be buffed out)
    Tires - light wear
    Original brakes and no problems
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
If anything, KBB is probably high on your Santa Fe.
  • robbiegrobbieg Member Posts: 350
Can't give you a guess, but what did you expect? You bought a Hyundai. Resale value has is their biggest negative right now and has been for a while.
  • 1racefan1racefan Member Posts: 932
Well, on the bad side, it has the 2.7L, instead of the 3.5L, and is 2wd, instead of 4wd (in Philly). The Santa Fe has since been redesigned, and it does have the Hyundai depreciation.

On the good side, the miles are low.

I would venture a guess that you would see $11,000-$12,500 for it as a trade, but am anxious to hear what the experts have to say.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
'01 VW Jetta. BASE model. And when I say base, I mean base! manual windows, manual tranny, etc. aftermarket CD player.
    Silver.
    75k miles.

It has existing damage to the front. The bumper is cracked and the hood is misaligned (although no paint damage, somehow).

So, vmax, what would a volvo dealer give him? He's thinking about trading it for one of those cheap S60 lease deals going on right now (by the way, how long is that good for? Feb only? and is the $2k lease cash on top of the incredibly low MF?). Thanks!

p.s. my guess is $3k. am i warm?
