Thanks a lot.
My sister is purchasing a 2001 Subaru Impreza RS, Auto, with tons of options. She is paying about $1100 under MSRP (20,800 on a 21,900 MSRP) - not too bad a deal. By the way - the car rode VERY nicely - much better than I anticipated.
We are trading in a 1986 Ford Bronco II - the radio stopped playing about two years ago, the AC stopped about two weeks ago, the rust is from the Bush administration (Senior), and don't try and stop the car if you are going downhill. The dealer offered $500. I think this is tremendous - what about you all?
For what it matters, it is an Auto with 98K miles.

Terry.
Yeah you did well, I agree with Terry!
Bill
Well my friend, if your dad is getting $4,800 (real money) on the truck --- this is another gift from the "Big Guy" in the
Sky --- all do respect, But the xtra clean ones with all the toys, with 30/40K are doing in and around $7,000 ... Soooooo ....? Be happy and enjoy your new vehicle ..
I hope this helps.....
Terry.
If their intent is to sellit to ya cheap.. $2K-2,500 is where it hits me..
Bill
How should I value the extra warrenty that come with this certified cars (should I pay more for the warrenty? How much are they truely worth?). The salesperson argued that these are better used cars since they pass the inspection. Is there any truth? In general, is it a good ideal to shop for one of these "cream puff" (the salesperson's word) or should I stick with private party sell? Any particular manufacturer's pre-owned cars is better than the other? Thanks.
Even so, I think that $4,500 or so is the money....perhaps $5K if its' that nice.. but if its a little rough around the edges...
Why not sellit yourself? $6,900 it in the paer.. you ought to get it.
Bill
Maybe $25K or so wholesale.. but I think that if its all loaded up and mint....It ought to bring every bit of that to maybe a little more.
Bill
Besides, I'm on the hunt for an 86 Bronco II -- Does anyone know where I can find one ..?
Terry.
Seriously..no paintwork..clean..etc.. $29K is where I'm thinking...

Can you tell me if larger dealers are more likely to resell a trade in than send it to an auction?
I'm trying to determine if a larger dealer might give me a better trade-in due to the fact they actually plan to sell the vehicle on their lot?
I've had dealers say they are checking to see what the LC has been going for at auctions. I'm not sure if this means they plan to auction it or if they are trying to see what the lowest prices have been.
Also would a dealer who sells Toyotas be likley to give me a better trade-in?
Thanks for your help.
Rob
And Terry you are right - the 02 Impreza is very impressive - AWD for right at $20K.

BILL: W/out scrolling back, I believe you pegged it at $5500 trade, but as I gave you more info, you said try to get $7k trade or stick it in the paper for like $9800/bo & see what I get. Well being a little hard headed and not in too much of a hurry, I started at $10,665. Let it run for a couple weeks, a few calls no real lookers. Changed the amount for remaining 2 wks to 9,950, more calls & couple lookers, but none w/ money. Meanwhile shopped it at CarMax, and a UCM offers were 5800/5500 respectively, while out of town at a dealer I would consider their new car(didn't wanna mess up home turf) loosely discussed new car price and was offered trade of $7k. He new upfront I was gonna sell myself and feel he did try to give me a fair deal and I promised him a chance at my new purchase. Well the ad ran out, BTW I did not get one single call from my ad on AutoTrader.com who has decent rep in this area, changed the wording of my ad, kept 9950 tag, ad started Sunday, got two calls sunday, one show and they were serious and had cash. This was important because I still owe $5600+ to an out of state lien holder.
They came up w/ 8200 offer, I said wasn't tryin to go below 9500, they-how bout 9k, me-9250, settled on $9,125. I did have to spend $225 for an Ox sensor to get a warning light off to show the car, but also put another 3000 mi on it since I started the process. I feel good about the deal coz I got at least $2k more than possible on trade, $3500 more than I owed, and they had done their research, & knew my car was in better shape than others they looked at even tho they had less mi., and I met them at their mech, who could find NOTHING wrong with the car. I negotiated only $375 less than what I really wanted, but was willing to because they were reasonable people, and I was concerned about some freak coming after me if something DID somehow go wrong w/ the 130k mi car, even tho I did everything I could to make it a good deal. Did a bill of sale and got it notorized at their credit union along w/ a cahsier ck to lien holder and one to me for diff, they were intelligent enough to protect themselves while cooperating w/ me on the tricky title.
All in all, for my first attempt at something like this, I am very pleased and learned A LOT from these forums, Bill's help, and other resources, including Edmunds tips on selling your car. I spent a little more time on it than I thought, but feel it was well worth it for my situation.
Thanks a bunch!!! Now I can use my knowledge to negotiate a good deal on my next ride, without the haggle of a trade

90 Celica GT automatic
original owner
pw/pl/fact cassette/alloys
burgandy/burgandy interior (strange, I know)
171k miles (ouch)
no sunroof
a/c has leak
body EXCELLENT (shiny paint, no rust or dents, probably some scratches)
He wants to trade it on a Camry pretty soon. Any ideas what a Toyota dealer would give him? What about $ for an ad in the paper? Thanx.
1993 Mercury Villager LS
86,000 Miles
Paint: Emerald Green top/silver bottom
Gray leather interior (looks brand new)
Rear AC/heat/radio, bucket seats
All options except sunroof
Shiny paint, very little scratches
I would like to know what I can REALISTICALLY expect if I trade it in. What about if I sell it by myself - what should I expect?
Zip code = 60004 (Chicago area)
Thanks for any input.
Well for starters it's a LS, the leather is a big help and it's got dual air ...ok, what about the tires.... hmmm, no info on the tires, if they are new, or close to, it's a big help.
It's Emerald green, not my favorite..but, the rest of the world does like it....
Soooo, if it's nice and clean and can pass for a 98/99 and you can see the seats between the french fries --- it's probably worth in and or around $3,000 ish ..."If" everything works .
Terry.
These little GT's are a big favorite, if it's sharp, the paint shows bright and clean and the interior is still nice ( plus it's an automatic ) and of course, it runs like a top and the tires are close to new ...right ?
Even with all the those miles I'm thinkin' a dealer ( Toyota ) will be "in and around" that $1,500ish number --- This can be a nice retail piece -if- this GT is nice.
You know the drill --
detail it, make look like a diamond, keep the records close etc... 4/5 liner in the biggest paper in the area --- and start it up around $3, 990, then let some guy insult you with $3,000 or so and say "Ok, Ok, I neeeed the money, my cat's sick" .. l.....o....l....
Good luck....
Terry.
The reason why the dealer is lookin' at auctions reports is either he doesn't go to them enough ..or.. he doesn't see them around enough, to put a "real" figure on it...
I doubt it's going to any auction ( at least not right now ..l...o...l. )-- they are in demand,
and will sell quickly --- If it's nice.
Terry.
The bad news: It's a '90 Tauras. It's beige in color.
The good news: It's got 45k original miles. It's not really a one owner, but a one family owned car. It was bought new in '90 by my grandfather. When he passed away in '96, my great aunt took over the car. When she passed away last winter, my brother took it. It's an LX sedan model and I believe it has the 3.8 V6. Then interior is in excellent shape. The exterior is very solid. Had some minor surface rust that was fixed last year, but it's starting to bubble again under the paint.
Can he expect anything at all for trade-in, considering the low miles? What could he sell it for on his own?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
First of all, let's understand what it "really" is.
It's a Factory warranty, supplied by the dealer, which raises the selling price of the vehicle to the consumer by $500 to $2,000 depending on the dealer, vehicle and longevity. As a rule, the dealers make aprroximatly 40% on the sale of that "Certified" warranty, so do they have a stake in whether you buy it or not -- of course.
No matter how we want to cut or slice the pie, the - "1,429 point inspection" - is nothing more or less than an oil and filter change, tire rotation, a quick and short inspection of a possible oil leak and maybe a vibration somewhere that was caught in the "road inspection" around the block. After that, let's leave well enough alone, and if there is a problem let the warranty company pay for it 1,000 miles down the road.
Do some dealers do a better job than others.. -- of course. But, in the long haul, the vast majority runs this pattern.
When I purchase vehicles at the auctions, I have them "certified" by Manheim for 14 days if there is no factory warranty -- Just, in case a vehicle I feel is a great one, could have a failure. This is for my own piece of mind, and gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling at sale time ...
I'm a strong believer in "extended warranties" -- and getting a good history and background from , let's say Edmunds ..or.. any other quality information center --- But, to pay 2 to 3 times the amount, that can be found elsewhere is a complete waste of $$$ ---
Do yourself a favor, negotiate the deal without the "Certified BS" -- then spend a "little" time researching the best warranty companies and save yourself a "lot" of money to be used on something else like some Ronal wheels, or whatever, cause even though the salesperson will try to hammer it home -- this does not effect any resale on your vehicle. Just ask anybody that just traded a 72 month 100,000 "certified" warranty, how much more they got on their last trade.....
I hope this helps ...
Terry.
If you remember, about 4 yrs ago, Kia was going under and everyone was flippin' out -- But, in 4/5 months everthing went quiet and that was the end of the "hoopla" about it. Kia dealers marched up the east coast and now you see them from San Diego to Boston.
The big difference is, how the Korean Goverment handles their internal finances -- unlike us, the Gov't there makes all kinds of different arrangements and such. As in the Kia deal, they separated the steel manufactering end of Kia, and consolodated the Auto arm of the company with a huge amount of $$$ and preferences with tax abatements, and released them from their debts and such ... this also follows some of the Japanese programs.
Not to bore you with all this stuff -- I don't think you should worry about Daewoo or warranty claims ... Hey, were not talking about LTV or Old's here -- Hey George W. - are you reading this l....o....l.....
I hope this makes sense ...
Terry.
Terry.
I'm thinkin' --- clean it up, make it look new with a Detail, have the service info on the dash, slap it into the largest paper in the area for let's say, $3,495, and let some one come over and insult you with $2,000/$2,500 and cut it from the Herd....
Terry
Do Saab values drop like a stone tossed off a cliff? Yes. Just look at the used values right here on Edmunds (and knock off another 10% or so). But, if you're leasing, what's the difference? All you should care about is your monthly payment. If the Saab monthly lease payment is too high, then don't get it. If you lease and turn the car back in each time, the residual really should mean nothing to you, right? Just don't purchase a new Saab, that's about the best advice I can give.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
SAABs tend to have horiffic resale value. Probably the only European cars that do worse would be Rolls-Royces and Bentleys (Certain models).
That being said, if you are leasing.. I'd (ANd I hate to say shop on payment) look at what the payments are going to be.
Case in point: When I sold Jaguars, an XJ8 that had an MSRP of $58,130 was about $50 more a month to lease than a Mercedes-Benz E320 with an MSRP of $47K or so.
$11,000 more car for like 8% more payment. And the MB Had a residual of like 62-64% and the Jag barely 50%.
Why? Lease subsidies! The SAABs generally have seriously subsidised leases with SUPER low money factors. So while buying a new one is foolish, LEASING a new one is generally a sweet deal.
Bill
Uhh, you wanna job?
Bill
We are also trading our 2001 Monte Carlo LS with 15K, black car, grey int, all the options, no leather and no power sunroof, also like new.
We are looking at buying a 2002 Acura TL-S and a SUV, What do you think we can expect to get on the trade value on ours. And what do you recommend for a SUV under $35,000.
Thanks in advance.
Chuck.
Question: My frined got a 2001 Accord Lx with 9000 miles for $16500 + fees! How this deal ? The new invoice was 17800 + 80 + 80 (mats/gaurds) + 200 profit to dealer
So is this deal good ? Savings of around 1500...
I think the Windstar ought to be worth $22K. Perhaps $23K to the right buyer.
The Monte? I would hit it at $14,500 or so. You're in the midwest where these vehicles are in demand more so than inthe Northeast, West coast..etc..
As far as an SUV.. what do you need? The Lexus RX300 is still a fave of mine but a new AWD is gonna be more...
Maybe a 4Runner? Smoother Ride? Go for a Highlander V6 Limited.
Bill
What Hondas are worth as used cars... simply amazes me (I see low-mile Civics in nice shape do Extra-Clean book all the time at auction down here).
Bill
Last Thursday at the auction, similiar Accords were doing $16/$16,500 --- So, let him enjoy this. Bill is right, it still amazes him and me, when they go "out of the book".
Terry.
Bill has just bought a Daewoo franchise and he told me, he will have 15 mobile vehicles on call 24/7 365, just in case you have a failure ... his # is here somewhere --- l....o...l...
Terry.
What are you having, a Garage sale or something ... ? Got any boats for sale ..? -- l...o...l...
The 2001 Windstars SEL's, all "Toyed out" ( what, no slider ..? ) will do in and around that $22/$23,000 figure, if it's the right color -- no purpleish stuff, no blacks .. and the MC, like Bill sayed is $14,500ish ---
As far as SUV's are concerned -- That's really personal taste. I drive a X5 4.4 BMW, do I think it's worth the money .. Heck no, would I drive another, not really. But, I'm sure there is a lot of folk's that visit this site that can give you some idea's. Personally, I like the new Ford Escape -- and I know I like the Hyundai Santa FE and the Grand Vitara vehicles.. and of course, the Lexus are sharp --- But, I also put corn on my mashed potatoes.
Good luck...
Terry.
Hey, if Chuck is having a Clearance Sale maybe we should all go to his house and see what he has. I need some surround sound equipt, a new fridge, a sleeper sofa, a couch with a chaise on the end....
Please post your home address so we all can come over. :-)
Thanks Again !! Another frined got the similar car 2001 LX Accord Auto Gold with 11,000 miles for same price 16500+ ttl.
I am also looking at a 2000 EX V6 Accord (spoiler/Wood trim etc) with 13,000 miles. How much would you hit it at?
$4,500? Very nice of ya Santa Claus
Seriously man.. $4K is, IMHO, to the moon. Purple? Miley? Racing Slicks? Paintwork?
Ugh.... keep it away from me!
Bill
On the 00 Accord.. I'm thinking a $19Kish wholesale piece to maybe $20K...
Terry? What say ye?
Bill
Who had Mashed potatoes with Gravy at Lunch.
Put me in for around a quarter, but let me make some calls first.......
Terry.
Man, if it's clean, with all the books and records and needs -0-, I mean -0- .. this vehicle will do an "easy" $19,000. Add a few little do-dads and who knows -- $20,000+ these things "get stupid" at the auctions ..
Terry.
