First, you are NOT selling a NEW car. All cars with 100k+ miles have imperfections of some sort - leaking oil, coolant, dents, scratches, tires, etc.

Last month, I sold a 1995 Ford Windstar for $1550. I disclosed up front that the car was 12 years old and might have problems. Also, the "check engine" light was on due to an oxygen sensor (per our mechanic). Otherwide, we maintained it like we do with all of our fleet cars. I let the buyers take it home, drive it and run it up to their mechanic.

I also explained that the sale was "as is, where is" and that there would be NO returns and to factor that into the bid.

You keep the insurance on the car until you sell it. PERIOD - NO EXCEPTIONS, You keep the title and registration. When you sell it, you keep teh plates and the registration and they get the title signed. I also do a bill of sale to alleviate any later problems.

Generally, you don't collect taxes as the DMV handles that.
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
"...When you sell it, you keep teh plates..."

Depends on the state, in some states, CA for one example, the plates stay with the vehicle. I would guess there are others.

    Hello,

I recently took over the ownership of a salvage title vehicle and would like to sell it. Would you please provide an appraisal so I have somewhere to start at?

    Houston, TX
    2004 Infiniti G35 2dr Coupe - red
    Manual transmission
    23,400 miles
Sun roof, some special kind of rims, nice radio
    Excellent exterior and interior condition

I haven't pulled a Carfax so I don't know what happened to it before. Thank you!
  • jhs70jhs70 Member Posts: 213
Is that based on the infamous Black Book or is that from Manheim? Again, thank you for your time.
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
You bought a vehicle with a salvage title and you don't what happened to it? Just curious, how much did you pay for it? And I'm sure the folks in the biz will agree with me, there ain't no such animal in excellent condition with a salvage title.

Didn't say "bought"... said "took over ownership." This can happen a number of ways. Inheritance, for one.

What's the VIN? If it's on Carfax, I can probably figure out what happened to it.

The oft-quoted rule is to deduct 1/3 off wholesale for a salvage title. On a newer, expensive car like the G35, it may be more than that.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I base all my numbers on Manheim.
    Good Luck!

I have never seen a salvage car that looked good.
For a lux car, take the low book and cut it in half.

:confuse: My car has a grape-fruit impression (ding) in the front bumper. Is that repairable damage or does the bumper need to be replaced? Is that pricey and how much does it affect the trade-in value if I leave it alone?

    Further details:
Edmunds says "clean" condition is $22K, "fair" is $19.5. Where would I fall if the car is in pretty good condition except for the bumper thing?

I am looking at purchasing an Audi A3 and have found one on the internet via Audi's CPO search engine. Here's the specs:
    Location: Brookline, MA
    Year/Make/Model: 2006 Audi A3
    Body Style: hatchback/wagon
Engine: 2 liter, 4 cylinder, DSG
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 5900
    Color: black exterior w/beige interior
Major Options: Premium package, cold weather package, 17" alloys
    Condition:
Exterior looks good – no noticeable dings, dents, or scratches.
Interior is clean, looks to be a couple of used spots on the carpet where shoes rested and the dirt hasn't completely come out.
Tires - ~75% of the tires left
    Brakes unknown
    Maintenance – scheduled maintenance done.
Other: Is being sold as a CPO vehicle.

The dealer is indicating his bottom line is $25,500 on the vehicle. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger. :confuse: Any thoughts from the group would be most appreciated.

Obviously you need to get quotes on replacing the bumper in order to decide. My amateur opinion is, just discount the price you expect by the amount of the repair, esp. if you have to pay full retail for a new bumper.

    After all, it's a 43K mile acura, not a nearly-new S-class or 545i.

Bumpers generally are not repairable with damage like yours.
A new bumper is probably @$2500 or so.
Unmolested you car would trade between $19-20,000.

Trade in should be between $13-14000

    $2500 for a bumper?

Bumper should be $300-400 + about $500-700 to paint it, maybe with labor $1500 including painting adjacent panels etc.

I was guessing $2k for a new Acura bumper, installed. Body work done at a good shop, esp. on bmw's, acuras, lexus, etc. always seems to cost WAY more than would seem rational.

Then there was the time I waited for 6 mo. for a bumper to arrive from Germany..... :( I should look up what it cost.....

i bought a bumper painted to match my car off of a well known auction site for about $600 shipped to my door. It took an hour and and a half to change it myself. I found the instuctions on a acura owners site. I have an 06 Tl. Saved a bundle and never was without my car. It is a factory bumper and everything just snaps together. In fact my bumper got damaged again and I'm gertting ready to do it again.

Not if you get a factory bumper and have a good body shop put it on.
If you go aftermarket and have Cousin It put it on, then it will cost less.
  • achenatorachenator Member Posts: 128
The dealer tells me the bumper is about 3-400. Couple hundred to paint it , and any body shop that charges more than 3 hrs labor to install it is ripping you off. The bumper I got is FACTORY it has honda oem stickers on it. Looked perfect until I bumped a wall AGAIN. The thing snaps on mostly. I'm not gonna spend big bucks on the part of the car that is most susceptible to damage and rock chips etc. I would be willing to spend as much $ as it takes for actual bodywork, fitting metal panels etc.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,441
That must be one of them special Swedish bumpers.. :)

Not sure how the Volvo bumper is made... but, an Acura bumper is basically a plastic cover, that comes unpainted.. Unless you've torn up the bumper shocks and supports, it is definitely under a $1000 job. Acuras (Hondas) don't really have an entire bumper assembly. It comes in components... Usually, if you've torn up a bumper shock/support, you've done damage to the rest of the car it is attached to.

I have no problem believing that a Volvo bumper replacement would cost $2500, though.. :(

As usual, Jeep Wrangler values are all over the place in Chicago...can't decide whether to keep another Summer and put lots of gas in this thing, or ditch for a small sedan with a sunroof and (gasp!) air conditioning:

Please give trade-in and private party value:

-2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport (midrange), black ext/gray cloth
-both tops (soft missing a side window, may just need the zipper fixed; the plastic windows are a bit dry/foggy; black hard top has a chip out of a corner near the right door, doesn't leak or anything)
-6 cylinder, 5-speed manual trans, factory AM/FM cassette with four speakers (two on the roll bar), not much else in the way of options (NO a/c, cruise, ABS or CD player)
-nice 15" factory alloys with 4 brand new, matching Goodyear Wrangler GS/A's, spare intact, no modifications whatsoever
-body average, has a small dent in the back bumper, some paint chipping off the door handles (common); no other paint issues, all glass good, interior good except one pinky-tip-sized cigarette burn and needing a detail
-63.5k miles, has had decent care (oil change receipts, brakes and tune-up @ around 40k), but nothing extraordinary
-no accidents, clear CarFax, original owner

It's a 'fun' vehicle, it's just that it sucks for most things other than being fun.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Just make sure that when they paint the bumper they put the proper mix of elasticiser in the paint, or you will get spidering of the bumper once the wether changes.

Honda stuff is cheaper no doubt.
I had the front bumper replaced on my SL500.
    Cost was $3000. No labor.
The poster in question said that the bumper was dented in, so the foam support would have to be replaced as well.
    It wasn't just the cover.

As you said this is honda stuff we are talking about, it's not an SL500!

As for the foam, you could probably get away with just the cover depending how much of a dent it was, especially if you were trading it in.
