I think you could get more... but, if you are happy selling it to your friend for $2200, I'm all for it... If it is as nice as you say, $2900-$3000 wouldn't take long, I don't think.... List it at $3495 and see where it goes..
That truck may be a touch more considering your location. There is a large population of people in that state who want a big SUV but do not have the ability to finance a car because of there current status, but always seem to have a pocket full of cash to purchase a vehichle with, and are not afraid of 100K+ miles.
Getting the dents in the hood popped and couple servicable used tires and you may be able to make a buck or two on that ride if you know some one further South who would let you post it for sale in there yard or something
I saw a piece on the local news where some woman donated her used car worth $2K, & the charity's "agent" sold it at auction for $50, so the charity got $50, & she got a $50 deduction.
Actually she was credited with a $50 charitable contribution which probably ended up as a less than $20 deduction.
hmmm... seeing quite a few of these around. I am assuming they are service loaners or something (i hope). anyway, i've piqued sis's interest, so she wants to go drive one.
What would it be worth in NJ?

thanks, vmax. I guess maybe we should have jumped at the one demo the dealer would sell for $12,9. Oh well.
my sis was being WAY too picky, so we wound up with a brand new one at invoice minus the $500 rebate. Also got $12k for her banged up '03 CRV with 59k miles that 2 other dealers we went to offered $11,500 for. So the final deal was a pretty good one.

fyi traded this past weekend - i ended up at $3500. i think i actually could have gotten more, but the odometer LED had a habit of flashing on and off. it chose the time they were looking at it to turn off. that was obviously a problem and so i caved a bit on the price.
i hadn't bargained a lot on the price of the car we were buying and it was past closing time on Saturday so they went for my request of $3500.

I'd really appreciate some help on this as I get very divergent values on pricing sites (KBB vs NADA for ex) due to the very low mileage. And the extended warranty obviously affects a private party price (but not trade-in since not transferable to dealer). Any ideas on prices? Thx so much!
Looking to sell one of our VWs, and I'm a bit surprised at the asking prices on autotrader (they seem really high, even for inflated dealer asking prices). Thought I'd see what you all think.

Hi, I'm in St. Louis, MO and have a 2001 Toyota Camry I'd like to trade in. LE V6 engine, Automatic 4 Door 77,100 miles White Exterior, Gray/Charcoal interior Sun roof, after market keyless entry system Condition: No mechanical problems, a few dings here and there, but paint is still smooth and shiny! A scratch on the bumper from the garage door closing on it. Just a scratch, no damage. Newer tires Up to date on Maintenace No insurance claims, damage, etc.
Did you pull this number out of the air,or is it based on something?Edmunds, and KBB say $15k,but I know it isn't quite that high, but a $5k difference is a lot.The mileage is low,and the truck is in great shape.I know with the gas prices being where they are it is tough to sell a vehicle that is not good on gas,but trucks are king around here.
good grief. it is always the same thing around here.
volvomax is not buying your truck, neither is KBB nor Edmunds. Have you taken it to a dealer? Has the dealer offered you considerably more than $10k?
If "trucks are king" where you are, then sell it yourself for $17k if you can.
You asked this man for the trade-in value. He gave it to you. That is the money he would give you if you brought your truck to his store. That number is based on dealer auction reports.
Why do people feel the need to argue about the value here? If you don't like the number, thank the appraiser for his time and move on. What is expected when arguing? Should volvomax raise his appraisal? Will that do anything to help the folks here in real life? Having an unrealistic expectation of their car's value?
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
I wasn't arguing, and I am sorry if it came out that way,but I just didn't see how the value of the truck has dropped that much in the year I have owned it.I bought for close to trade-in value a year ago,and now I am being told it is worth $3k less than trade-in currently with only 10k miles on it in that time(well under the normal average).Again I am sorry, and I won't be bugging you anymore.Good day.
I'm hoping you can help out a coworker of mine. It's kind of a crazy story -- thieves sliced open her convertible top, lowered themselves into the car, unbolted both seats, and removed them without opening the doors, unrolling the windows, or triggering the alarm. This was on a super-rainy night, so the interior of the car is completely trashed. This happened right outside her house in a nice part of Westchester County, NY!
I'm sure it's not even close to a total, but I figured it wouldn't hurt her to have a real retail value in the back of her mind just in case.

Don't take it personally. You got a price from a dealer on your vehicle - that's what it's worth to him. What KBB and Edmunds say isn't gospel unless they're willing to cut you check for that amount.
It's 4 YO - almost 5 YO - truck competing in a huge market against other used trucks not to mention 2 brand new redesigns in the new truck market. It's got a 5.7 L engine and gas prices are spiking again. You're in Boston - as am I - and trucks aren't king. You see many of them but Outbacks, Accords, Camrys and old Volvos are king.
Well I will chime in once more.I am not in Boston, but on the south shore where trucks are king.I only said Boston as it was the closest metro area to me.Also I was really interested in real world PRIVATE PARTY value more than trade-in.I guess I shouldn't have even posted. Thanks guys.
I'm not in the biz Chris, but I have seen wide differences between KBB, Edmunds, and auction prices, sometimes they're high and sometimes they're low. It sounds like your vehicle is one of those that KBB and Edmunds are higher than the auction prices. And that's what you'll get when you ask here. If for example you paid KBB trade in and that price is higher than auctions, then you'll get numbers like you're now seeing and you'll wonder why they vary so much.
The folks in the biz here are very professional and I'm sure I speak for those not in the biz that we greatly appreciate them taking their time to post here.
These guys are usually right on the money for trades. You can get a couple thousand more for private party. As has been said before, consumer book values are generally useless on most trades. Good luck with your sale.
Minor accident before I bought it used last year that showed up on the carfax, but nothing major.
That kills it from a Trade in standpoint. $10K is genarous. Here is why. What is the first question after "How Much" you all ask when you look at a used car? You ask if it has ever been in a wreck, second question? is it a one owner And if we can't answer no or produce a clean carfax then your trade is not worth squat, to me at least. So in the eyes of Joe Consumer you have a multiple owner truck that has been in a wreck Now if you want to sell it yourself where you can explain to the individuial you may do better
For what it is worth, I based the #'s on what similar vehicles were going over the block at Manheims. You have a truck in average condition, but with a bad Carfax. Wholesalers don't like bad carfax's, and neither do dealers, so I docked your truck based on that. Now, maybe in your part of the world average trucks w/ bad carfax's do well, and maybe I am a little low. But I'm not off by much.
It's too bad the books tend to be so far off (and usually not in the consumers favor). When that happens, the buyer is going to think the dealer is ripping them off, even if the dealer is giving them fair wholesale value.
I wonder what it would take to have a more accurate system.
Hello, I am looking at trading in my 2002 C240. Spokane, WA 4dr sedan 6cyl auto RWD (I think) 87,000mi (I LOVE to drive this car! I just need a bigger one) Ext: white Int: Java leather(full leather-no inserts)pwr seats w/ memory Condition is good for age of car. No scratches or dings. Paint is in good shape Brand new all-season tires + Gislaved snow tires Replaced battery in January 07 Will need brakes soon Just had oil changed, realignment, coolant flush Regular maintenance at MB dealer 6 disc CD changer 60/40 split rear seat w/ ski bag rear window shade Was in a rear-end accident in 2005. No airbag deployment. Total damage: $5000. Thank you.
I am sure this has been said here before but, you have to remember KBB, Edmunds, Black Book, NADA, your bank, credit union, etc will not buy your car. They will throw a value out there based on an educated guess, but when the dealer puts a price on it thats what they are willing to cash it for right now. Also allot of these consumer sites evaluation criteria is not to good and allot of times consumers are not honest with themselves when they evaluate there car. Just a few scratches, needs tires, and there is a hole in the seat, other then that it is in excellent shape. Or well its a 2002 model with 135K miles on it, its extra clean. No such thing as an extra clean high miles car.
Here is what is on page 1 of the Black book whole sale guide.
1. Extra Clean- Like new for year model, perfect paint,no visible signs of wear, very low miles
2. Clean-Very little interior or exterior wear, matching tires with good tread, mechanically sound
3. Average-Visibly normal interior and exterior wear, still good vehicle with substantial service remaining.
4. Rough-A vehicle with below average interior or exterior condition and/or one with excessive mileage. Limited serviceable remaining.
75% of vehichles fall in to the average category. But what really drives the price of your trade today is what the market on them in the area you live. Right now the market in my area is good on Expeditions, if the gas keeps going up the market will fall on them drastically in two weeks. There could be a $1500-$2500 move on them between now and April 1st.

Not much. Auction values are the deal. If the various auctions across the country published the paid values on a daily basis, much of this back-and-forth would go away.
It'll never happen, for a variety of reasons. Several of us miss Royce, but his data all came from auctions. Color & location matter, among other things.
Most web sites don't exist to give discouraging information, so I don't expect to see any of this available anytime soon.
Not much. Auction values are the deal. If the various auctions across the country published the paid values on a daily basis, much of this back-and-forth would go away.
Manheim DOES publish weekly information on auction prices. Professionals in the business like Royce **BUY** the information (which is NOT inexpensive). If you are willing to pay for the information, you can have it at your fingertips.
Furthermore, like most information, it is great IF YOU KNOW HOW TO INTERPRET IT. Auction prices is an important factor in the cost of a used car. However, you have to also consider the costs of reconditioning AND the market conditions. This week it was 60F in Chicago. I bet you the cost of a Corvette Convertible is a bit higher this week than it was three or four feet of snow ago,
Personally, while I buy the Black Book, I cannot justify buying the auction data as I dispose of perhaps 10 vehicles a year.

I am looking at a longer commute and would like to get a higher MPG vehicle. What is a reasonable value for the following: Greater Los Angeles Area 1998 Volvo V70 Wagon Inline 5 normally aspirated engine, A/T w/Front Wheel Drive 117950 miles White with gray cloth interior Good paint with several minor dings Tires replaced at 105K, brakes (pads & all 4 rotors) at 110K, all struts replaced at 110K All maintenance has been performed to date (Volvo dealer to 105K, good independent shop thereafter) No options
What you have to remember is that u/c appraising is as much an art as a science. Even w/ tools like the Manheim auction reports, a dealer can still be wrong on a u/c. Dealers write down(meaning take a loss on) used cars all the time. There simply is no magic formula to determine exactly what your trade in is worth, and there never will be.

Even w/ tools like the Manheim auction reports, a dealer can still be wrong on a u/c.
Dealers write down(meaning take a loss on) used cars all the time.
There simply is no magic formula to determine exactly what your trade in is worth, and there never will be.
Well, if it were unmolested trade in should be @ $12,000
With an accident figure @ $10,000
A dealer is only going to give you $2000 or so.
You could probably get $4-5000 privately.
