Yeah, price new ones at fitzmall.com. Used will have to compete with new if prices are close, so you should be 10-20% cheaper than Fitz even if it's just a year old. Else the buyer will go with a new one.
like you said, the new ones are cheap. Problem is, private sellers with new cars are very often up to their necks in it. So this seller may owe more than $20k on the car and won't be able to get out from under it by selling it at a correct price. In other words, there is no deal here.
But if you want to try, I kind of like juice's suggestion of ~15% off new. So if the best price you can get on a new one is $20k, then $17k would probably be all the money on the used one.
Don't forget another very important point here. If you are planning on financing that car, it will cost you much more to finance a used car through private party than a new one through a dealer. So make sure you figure out your payments, too. You may be saving $3k purchase price, but spending $800-$1k more in financing.

Amen to that. I'll add two more points: Sellers with OLD cars may well be up to their necks in it.
Also, they KNOW what it's worth. It's bad when they looked it up on kbb, it's worse when "the credit union told me what it's worth." Never mind that the nice lady at the CU never looked at the car and doesn't know anything anyway except how to type.
I've had this happen with $900 pieces of junk when I was looking for a beater. Very frustrating and time consuming.
And then there was the older gentleman with the very nicely kept 4cyl Caravan... clean, rust-free, ran great... until we got to the part where there was oil dripping out of the tail pipe. When I politely pointed it out, he flew into a rant and started yelling at me. Private party is lots of fun.
But I've had good luck, too, and mostly in the sub-$4,000 range.
Over $6 or $7, I kinda like to bite the bullet and go new. On the right car, it's typically a good deal.
I have a 7-year old GMC Yukon XLT with a little over 100,000 miles in that is in excellent condition (per dealers). I have been offered from $7,500 to $10,000 by the dealers I have spoken with (Car Max offered $8,000). Here is the dilemma that I need your help with: I'm not sure whether to buy a new sedan or hold off until the Yukon dies a noble death. The Yukon has served its purpose well but I am ready to down-size to a more efficient and nimble sedan. My best guess is that I should hold on to the Yukon for another 1-2 years. I am concerned that I may then have a vehicle that is worth significantly less as trade-in value. I am also concerned that if I wait until the Yukon finally dies with a fatal/expensive issue that I will have missed a reasonable opportunity to cash-in on the remaining value of the vehicle. Help!! Thanks.
Normally I'm in the "keep it" camp, but if you are OK with the $10K, I'd dump this one right now. Gas doesn't appear to be getting cheaper, and the demand for ginormous (added to the dictionary this week) SUVs isn't rising.
And, as you mentioned, if it needs a really expensive repair - likely given that you have over 100K on it - you may miss that magic window to maximize trade-in value. Your call, but I'd take the money & run.

I had the s/w patch applied and the hesitation is gone. No rattles so far (knock on wood). Had the airbag wire harness replaced (TSB) and dampner brake kit installed (TSB).
Options: Power Moonroof, 6 cd changer, premium audio, premium wheels, etc. All major options except navigation
Condition: Car is in very good shape for a 5 yr old car with no dings at all.
Tires: About 25-30K on them
Brakes: Fronts done about 8K ago
Maintenance: all routine maintenance done
No claims/accidents/anything.
I've been to 5 dealers and getting a # out of them is like pulling teeth. They keep wanting to say, "The number doesn't matter, it's the net out of pocket for the new car that matters." In which I reply, "Sure, but I know the price I'm paying for the car, and now I want to know how much you're giving me..." which I get the "Well when we're real serious we'll tell you"
The 2 dealers that did not give me that song and dance had distinctly different #s. They also said they had to deduct for mileage? That doesn't make sense.... It has 63K.
Either way, does anyone know what a fair trade value for this car would be?
Hi guys, it's time to trade in my '05 Altima and as always really appreciate your help here.

Car is coming off lease, and would like to know how trade-in value compares to residual. Thanks...
Base model, no power doors or extras, but it runs well and aside from some scratches to the paint, the car looks fine. Not great, but ok. About 80k miles. KBB says the trade-in is about $2500 for fair to about $3500 for good. Either is fine for me. If I can get $2500+, I'll be happy enough.
If I show the KBB estimates to a dealer, will they laugh in my face, or would the more likely to have already come to KBB's conclusions, or...would they know the jig is up and they can't pull the wool over my eyes and agree to the KBB range.
No need to trade this one - low mileage Toyotas are just about impossible to find. Stick your Corolla on craigslist and it will be gone in about two hours.
if it is a stick, I would be all over it if it was a local car. I'm looking for a first car for my son to learn to drive on, and it would fit the bill perfectly.
I expect you will find plenty of other people willing to snap it up. Do a good detail yourself (in and out), fix any little minor issues with it, and put it near a busy road with a for sale sign, and just wait for the calls.
You also don't say where it is, which will impact the price. The tranny (auto or stick) is also important.
It does at least have AC< right? Wouldn't matter to me (and I would be happy to grab something at a rock bottom price because of it), but it can be a deal breaker for some people.
And I would sell that Corolla privately, no question.

I agree with the suggestions here to sell it privately. No one has mentioned a good asking price tho.
I'd just say, if you do sell it privately, don't "start" too low. I once sold a 7 y.o. Corolla in 5 seconds for 30% more than what a dealer offered, & then my phone lines almost melted from the dozens of phone calls still pouring in. Think I could have gotten way more, perhaps?
Could you get say $4995, by selling it privately? Or at least, is that a good asking price?

Being that this is a 6-7 year-old Honda Civic in relatively good condition and added bonuses such as leather and alloys, I know for a fact that I could do my best selling it privately. What could I expect to get private party and trade? Thanks in advance! My son wants to get the most out of his car.
Just talked with you fine folks a couple of weeks ago when my dad bought his 2007 Grand Prix GXP. He ended up getting it for $22k. He's holding on to the '98, it's in the shop getting it's 2nd new transmission in a year (under warranty), and he intends to drive it until he retires (any time now) or something else major blows up on it. It's got 190+K on it now. Summer is car trading season for my family. All but one of the vehicles I've had was bought June-August, likewise with my Dad. Now my sister is also looking. While looking for a new Nissan Versa with my sister, I stumbled onto a jewel that I'd be nuts to pass up. Below is what I'm trading and what I'm trading for.
My Trade: Location: Hillsville, VA 24343, or Wytheville Va (40 mins away) Year/Make/Model: 2002 Dodge Durango R/T: Body Style: 5 Door SUV Engine: 5.9 Liter V8 Transmission: Automatic Driveline: AWD Mileage: 49,700 Color: Ext: Bright Red / Int: Charcoal Gray with Charcoal Gray/Light Gray Leather/Suede Seats Major Options: Basic R/T with am/fm/cd/cass, Infinity sound system, pwr windows/locks, power heated fold-away mirrors, dual zone temperature controls, rear air, power driver's seat, heated front seats, folding 3rd row seat, driver's info center with mileage/comp/temp, 17" Chrome alloy wheels, cruise, steering wheel remote radio controls, side impact air bags, heavy duty towing package w/trailer brake...think thats about it Condition: When I purchased this Durango two years ago, it had just under 37k miles on it (yep, only 13k in two years), and just prior to it being traded in, a tree limb fell on the hood. This put a big dent in the front of the hood and broke the original body-color grille. I replaced the original grill with an oem chrome grill, but the dent in the hood is still there. Golf ball size dent with paint chip on driver's side rear door, resulting from someone opening their door into mine Dime size paint chip on passenger side rear door on the plastic molding, was there when I bought it A few very minute dings around the vehicle, other than that, looks great. The dent in the driver's rear door is the most noticable, but not all that bad. No scratches. Interior is still in excellent shape, drivers seat shows a little wear from sliding in and out, but no cuts or scratches. I strive to keep all of my vehicles clean and polished, so it's looking pretty good right now, but the front wheels are showing a little rust/brake dust build up which I've removed easily before with chrome polish. Tires - were put on new when I purchased the vehicle, so they have 13k miles on them and are 2 years old Brakes - Rear brakes are good, I think the front ones are needing replacement...but were new when I purchased it. Maintenance - Oil change every 5k since I've had it, was originally from massachusetts, bought it in NC, it's been in VA since Other: Haven't had any claims against it or anything. I was a demo vehicle, purchased by a gentleman from MA for his wife. His family moved to NC in 2002, and it was traded there for a new HHR in July of 2002, and bought by me the very night it was traded in.
Now, the jewel that I have found and am 99% sure I'll get:
Location: Wytheville, VA Year/Make/Model: 2002 Toyota Tundra Limited Access Cab Body Style: 4 door Pickup Truck Engine: 4.7 Liter V8 Transmission: Automatic Driveline: 4WD Mileage: 27,481 (Yes, thats correct!) Color: Ext: Black / Int: Tan Leather Major Options: pwr windows/locks, pwr heated mirrors, power heated seats, (power may only be driver's seat, not sure), 6-Disc In dash changer with am/fm/cass, cruise, towing package, alloy wheels, camper top, bed liner Condition: Upon first glance, appears spotless! Tires - 200 miles on new michelins Brakes - presumed to be in good shape, not sure Maintenance - Performed by the previous owner's son, a mechanic at the dealership it was traded into, all maintenance done at the dealership. Other: One Owner local vehicle, traded in for a 2007 Nissan sedan (don't know why). Very nice truck inside and out, hard to pass up!
The asking price on the Toyota is $20,988. Black book values look to be around the $17,000 range for this condition, but I could be wrong. What say you professionals out there? I know I shouldn't put a lot of trust in a book I got for $4.99 at a gas station.
Update. Got $15400 for my 07 Civic EX with 4500 miles. The $15500 offer I received was from a Honda dealer that I was planning to buy a Ridgeline from at invoice less $3500 in dealer cash.
I decided to take a look at the 07 Altima and liked it so much I decided to go with that. The Nissan dealership offered $15K initially. After about 30 mins. of haggling and 5 minutes before closing, got $15400 for the trade and paid $2 under invoice for my new Altima.

Well let's see... about:$22,500 but I would feel more comfortable at 22k. You might find a few people willing to give you 23k for it. The biggest deduction that you have is the amount of miles that you have on it.
Ok I am not sure if you are going to like this number but here it is. The book says more but if you traded that in at my dealer. I would give about $100.00 ACV and show you about 5.

Im looking @ a new 07 V6 4MO sticker @ 36020.

With my trade I would have to finance 25K before TTL...
Good deal?
I also sold my 2001 Jetta GLX with 60k miles privately for 12.5k (which was KBB value). The dealer was offering me only $9.5k.
I think they are giving you a good trade in price, but not a very good price on your purchase.
Consider selling the Jetta privately. Best of luck.
Esp if someone will give you $10 grand real money.
Are you dealing with any rattles?
How about the low speed hesitation issue?
Thanks for you input.

A few very minute dings around the vehicle, other than that, looks great.
Tires - were put on new when I purchased the vehicle, so they have 13k miles on them and are 2 years old
Brakes - Rear brakes are good, I think the front ones are needing replacement...but were new when I purchased it.
Maintenance - Oil change every 5k since I've had it, was originally from massachusetts, bought it in NC, it's been in VA since
Other: Haven't had any claims against it or anything. I was a demo vehicle, purchased by a gentleman from MA for his wife. His family moved to NC in 2002, and it was traded there for a new HHR in July of 2002, and bought by me the very night it was traded in.
Now, the jewel that I have found and am 99% sure I'll get:
Location: Wytheville, VA
Year/Make/Model: 2002 Toyota Tundra Limited Access Cab
Body Style: 4 door Pickup Truck
Engine: 4.7 Liter V8
Transmission: Automatic
Driveline: 4WD
Mileage: 27,481 (Yes, thats correct!)

Major Options: pwr windows/locks, pwr heated mirrors, power heated seats, (power may only be driver's seat, not sure), 6-Disc In dash changer with am/fm/cass, cruise, towing package, alloy wheels, camper top, bed liner
Condition:
Upon first glance, appears spotless!
Tires - 200 miles on new michelins
Brakes - presumed to be in good shape, not sure
Maintenance - Performed by the previous owner's son, a mechanic at the dealership it was traded into, all maintenance done at the dealership.
Thanks!!!

In SC - in JULY!!
I'll take it off his hands for $100. He pays me.
You might have one dealer give you 500 dollars and another give you 1,000 put all of that is coming off the profit on the new car.
Maybe donation...
I decided to take a look at the 07 Altima and liked it so much I decided to go with that. The Nissan dealership offered $15K initially. After about 30 mins. of haggling and 5 minutes before closing, got $15400 for the trade and paid $2 under invoice for my new Altima.
