:confuse: Hi! I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu 41545 mi good condition auto-start. I have financing through Citifinancial at 18% with $12732.13 left. I was approved for a trade in loan at 13% for 18000. I was thinking about getting a minivan (Mazda5 or something) or SUV because we may add to our family. Should I just refinance and save the money (since my car is great and have no problems)? Or since it is end of year and deals are great trade in. My loan is already upsidedown, so I don't want to get worse value. Please help!
You are already upside down to the tune of at least $5k.
Personally, I would increase the payments on the car to decrease the amount that you are "upside down". When that loan is paid off, I would keep the car for an additional 2-3 years until you can put a significant down payment on another vehicle.

last week I leased a 2008 Nissan Armada LE. It has EVERY conceivable option. It is a 39mo lease, my payments are $588. I put down some on trade equity. I love the truck, it is spacious, and smooth and quiet. the mileage isn't that much worse than the 03 Pathfinder I traded for it. I am having a hard time thinking I made the right choice, even with a 2nd child coming, and a full time video business. It's crazy, but I was thinking about turning it for soemthing more fuel efficient (Passat Wagon) and was wondering how much I woudl lose? my cap cost was 44K. I am guessing about 5-6K.
you like the vehicle, so you are in a great position. Keep it! If you can refinance at a lower rate, go ahead and do that. But whatever you do, don't increase the # of payments. In other words, if you have 36 payments remaining, then refinance at a lower rate on the same 36 months. IF you can pay more each month, then do it. You could get a lower rate and the same # of payments, but continue making a payment equal to your current amount and probably have it paid off in 30 months (for instance).

ouch. the 08s arent even listed on Edmunds or KBB. 10K buys much gas. Even on a 23k Passat, I think I could manage to lower my payment, but the Mada is so comfy, it prolly isn't worth the trouble to lose that much money and reliability issues with VW.

I don't know that there is a "good" price for one of these, but I would want to be in one between $3-4,000 Make sure the car has a complete record of maintenance and then have a fair amount of money set aside for maintenance and repairs.

U/C managers are funny creatures. You can offer $18,500 if you like. You may get turned down however. If the car is retailed for that price,then the loss(and it will most certainly be a loss) goes right in the sales log. If it is wholesaled,than the loss can be buried in w/ the wholesale profit. If that car was bought at auction today for $18,000, than it would retail for over $20,000.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if dealerships would pay me $1,000 below Kelly Blue Book trade-in for my car in cash? You could take it to a Carmax and/or one or more Toyota stores and see what they'll give you for it. Expect a low (probably very low) number given it's high mileage and less than pristine condition, especially this time of year. Miles just kill any late model car's value, more than the "books" indicate. Also, a car cannot be immaculate and have dents - those two words don't belong in the same sentence.
Once you have an idea of what a dealer will give you, take some clear pics and put it on craigslist at a higher number that will give you some wiggle room to still sell it for more than a dealer will give you. If you don't get any bites, then let it go to a dealer.
Yeah I do belive that is fair. 16,000 is good for a 2003. Whats he want for it is the question. And those fancy schmancy wheels could cost 10,000 you never know.
Have you tried just selling it outright? I helped my daughter sell her '03 GT-S about three months ago and was dumbfounded with how quickly it sold. She had about 75,000 miles on it, it had been in an accident (hood, fender, headlamp), front was scraped up/dinged up, very average condition. But we priced it aggressive and the 1st guy that called bought it. We got about $2,000 more than the Lexus dealer offered us on trade. I didn't think anyone liked those cars since they don't seem to sell that well and my daughter hated it about two months after the new-car thing wore off. But apparently they're desirable at that price range so stick an ad in the paper and see what happens. Someone here should be able to give you a decent idea of what price to expect if you give them all the details requested (location, etc.).
This is going to be tough, but I think this is the type of deal you have to walk away from, and hope that the seller comes back to you when he realizes noone loves his wheels as much as he does.

Happened to me once, in reverse, i.e. I was the seller. I dropped the price by $50 and filled up the tank as an apology for not taking the original offer.
If it happens to you I think it would be reasonable to ask that it be detailed and the filled up with premium fuel.

What's he asking? The 15,000 miles--on an '03--would turn me on. OTOH, I "think" that the '02 & '03 Minis were the most troublesome. So maybe you could just get a newer one, even with some warranty left, for not a huge amount more (?).

mini's are hard to fugure. the money you offered is pretty close to wholesale on the car. Car would prob bring $15-16k at the auction. Obviously, the guy is looking for more. Whether it is worth more is up to you.
Sad to say it, but you are asking way to much for that car. Its the SWB, and the iL model is more in demand. Auction price on that car is prob $14,000 or so. $16-17k is more in line w/ that cars street value.

when pricing anything, whether a house, car, or lunch, you have to play the marketing game. someone running a search for a $20k car is not going to even see that $20,500 car. If you price it at $19,995, however....
I mean, it still applies even in light of vmax's numbers, just not quite as obviously. If the value is $17k, then price it at $17,495 or $16,995. Something like that. It is just so when somebody types in a search for "cars under $17k," yours comes up.

i just meant to point out that, for instance, i go to cars.com or autotrader or wherever, and I'll put in my search criteria as "Qmotors Qcar. 1998-2007. $12k-$20k." So a car priced $20,001 won't show up for me. It was exactly the same thing when house shopping. We said we wanted to pay $140k (going way back when) and our realtor was knowledgeable enough to say "ok, but we'll search the database up to $145k so that we can get those houses that might be only a hair above what you want to pay and may take less than asking price." (but, of course, to your point, the house still had to be WORTH that much, or it wouldn't get any kind of consideration)

Need help with dececision on whether to ... 1) first of all, trade-in / sell on own my 99 honda accord coupe V6 with 88000 miles/no accidents except has noticeable scratch without dent- wife scraped post while parking - on back panel, other than that extremely clean (inside/out) and with leather .... OR ... my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE , 58000 miles with no accidents, extremely clean inside/out, has leather, but with malfunctioning 6 disc CD changer.
2) Secondly, deciding the above and whether to sell on own or trade-in to a dealer. (incidently, i've never sold a car on my own ... but am i owed tax on the selling price???... sorry for this rookie question)
I'm looking to purchase a 5series BMW. So a trade in would be at a BMW or CARmax ....

99 accord v6 coupe with dark gray leather interior with 88000miles with minor but noticeable scratch on side (no dents), no accidents, very clean inside and out, ... the only 2 flaws i can see is that it air conditioner may need to be serviced and has very minimal rear main seal leak (but no need to supplement with oil change). Just changed tires, had timing belt/water pump replaced, and serviced EGR las year.
2001 pathfinder LE 2WD with 58000miles with no accidents, clean inside and out, dark gray leather interior, no mechanical issues and cosmetic issues... the flaws are malfunctioning 6 disc CD changer (which is notorious on this model nissan path) and tires need changing out.
Again, any advise would be appreciated. Sorry for long post (s).

For what it's worth though, your offer seems plenty high to me.
For comparison, use the autotrader website and do a nationwide search to see what's on the market.
The stumbling block is the low mileage. It's unusually low, so the bickering is basically an interesting question:
What are low miles really worth? Can you quantify them?
A 2003 MINI should have maybe 40-48K on it. So he's maybe 25K under. Is this mileage really worth $100 per 1,000 miles? I
"Ya can't buy miles" say the used car guys, but you can apparently charge for them :P
It has sport package, convinience package, cold weather pkg. 63K miles. Like new condition.
Got it as a certified BMW in 2003 for $43K
Kelley private party is $20,600. Edmunds private party value is $18,500 but they just lowered it by $2000 2 weeks ago. I am asking $20,500.
I posted the car on cars.com, autotrader.com and craigslist a month ago and so far only one person came to look at it.
