IMO, SAAB's basic strengths evaporated with the GM influence and ownership, especially the interior and engine technology. As Shifty points out regarding parts, some may have had parts acquisition problems, but I never experienced it. Our former local dealership was located in a small town (600 population!) in western Indiana. They stocked practically all parts from the 9-5 back to the 2-stroke 93. But, they had been a SAAB-only dealership since 1956. If they didn't have a part, it was there in one day. There are a number of online sources for SAAB parts, and I can have any OEM part to my door in no more than two days.

Actually, I've found - at least for my Classic 900 - parts availability and prices are equal to or less than any domestic vehicle I've ever owned. For example, direct fit drop-in catalytic converters for $75 for the 900 - not too many cars, including domestics, offer one at that price. The Power Steering pump is a GM-Saginaw unit available anywhere for practically nothing, as is the steering rack. Maintenance cost is not an issue for me, as I perform all of the maintenance on the car.

If anything is the culprit with SAAB, it's SAAB corporate's blunders and GM's inability to understand the true SAAB buyer. It takes more to make, and/or to sell, a SAAB than having the ignition switch on the floor.

As far as I'm concerned, the real SAAB died when GM bought 51% of the company in 1990, and the remainder a decade later.

I think that Saab would be a great buy for someone in the neighborhood of $5K-$6K.. Where can you find a 7 yr old luxury sedan with only 58K miles, and with a stick, for anywhere near that price?

As risk-averse as I am towards Saabs, if it were time to find a car in that price range, I'd jump on it. Seriously, what else would you buy for $5500?

I'm not saying a dealer should pay more for it... just that it's a screaming buy for someone that knows a mechanic named Sven..

I think every car with a bad reputation deserves it. American buyers aren't stupid, they know, sooner or later. I'd take a chance on a *very* cheap, *very* clean, *very* low mileage Saab, but nothing over 80K or with any questionable issues whatsoever. I loved my Saabs, and they were all (3 of them) pretty troublesome cars. Luckily, I bought 'em cheap and bailed out in time. I still miss the turbo convertible though.

Probably. Even tho I agree that Saabs "aren't real Saabs anymore", & don't have the character of the 900 & 9000. And the 9-5 has fairly awful repair ratings in CR.

Still, no worse than VW's say. (OK, that's not saying much).

My 9000 turbo also had lousy repair ratings in CR. But mine also had very low miles, like the OP's, & didn't cost me an insane amount for repairs, mainly replacement items, over 10 years. When I went to sell it, one Acura dlr. offered me "NOTHING". Zero. On trade. A Lexus dlr. offered me $4200 on trade.

I put an ad in the Boston Globe & sold it in 2 weeks for $6200, cash green US $$.....

Tell your friend the trade is not only fair, but also the value may go down once the 2009 models show up in dealers. They'll also be clearing out the 2008s, further eroding his trade in value.

Oh I agree, unfortunatly they have in their minds that the car is worth a lot more than $13k and they won't listen to reason. Me thinks they will be driving that car for a long long long time.
  • colloquorcolloquor Member Posts: 482
Fordloser - as a last resort, I may be interested in your 9-5. I'll certainly give you more than you've been offered in trade. Since it's the Inline 4, and most likely the LPT, and the exterior color is right, perhaps . . . thank goodness it's not the Opel V6.

We should talk. I am in the process of pulling together my service records, and I will probably put the Saab on Craigslist in the next few weeks. Where are you located? I am about 30 minutes North of Boston. My e-mail address is akfusco@gmail.com.

Denver Colorado (80mi away west), I have an ash gold xc whose lease is up now.
Was given the lease purchase option by Wells F. for $19K, negotiated down from 23+K.

Wondering what the real trade value is on this car; dealer pooh-poohed it with his ragtag NADA book (I can't believe they still use these!) which showed 17K.

    4dr Wagon
    2.5 5cyl Turbo
    AWD
    Mileage: 38K
    Color: Ash Gold
Options: Premium, Climate, Audio (4cd in-dash changer, 12 speaker/woofer), Xenon, Mud Floor Mats, Clear Bra, Headlamp protective covers, Volvo Bike Racks (2)
Tires: Nokian WR, 3 seasons winter only use, 40%? Would give Pirelli Scorpions set (no wheels) with car, 30% wear.
Brakes and other maintenance all good
Excellent exterior condition save for crack in plastic bumper, quoted $500 to replace from Volvo dealer

    THANK YOU!

Regardless of what the trade numbers come in, you're probably going to want to private sale that car. Shouldn't have any trouble assuming the new ones sell for sticker like they do around here. You can probably get close to what a dealer would sell it for. I sold my '07 Civic last month and wasn't really trying but the deal was too good to pass up.

Your dealer is all over it @ $17,000.
If you want to buy out the lease and keep it, $19000 is a fair price, but that is not what the car would trade for.

    2006 Subaru Forester X 4-cyl/manual AWD 45k miles
Dealer is offering $13k, they are looking at a new 08 Forester.

If I understand, they might be "losing" what--$6K on a $20K when-new vehicle they've put 45K miles on in 2 years? I'm too lazy to do the math, but I doubt they could even lease one for that, putting on all those miles.

What's the price on the new 08 Forester?

    Hi,
I am trading my 03 Nissan Maxima for another car. According to KBB and Nada it is worht more than what we have been offered for trade. But according to the dealer KBB is not very accurate with high mileage vehicles. I tend to agree after experimenting with the mileage number. My car has 100k miles on it. If I change the mileage to 200k miles the value only drops by about 1K. If I increase to 300k another 1k. That doesn't seem realistic.
The dealer has offered me $7800, which I feel is good considering I have been trying to sell for 2 months now at $8700. But he is making up for it with a 9.5% interest rate.

    Any thoughts?
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
The dealer gave me the carfax report and the escalade has been in a rear car collison...with moderate damage

The problem is, when you go to sell it or trade, most everyone will try to beat you down because of the carfax, even if the damage wasn't that bad. (How bad was it, can you get the body shop repair records)?

Unless you keep it so long that it's only worth a few $$thou. (Which might not take that long, if gas prices went to $5 or $6.......).....

A co-worker has asked me for some advice on a truck he is looking to buy. Of course, I know of no better place to seek a real value than this forum! Here's the link to the actual vehicle; it seems a little high, but it is certified. What should be the rock-bottom price for this vehicle at this NC dealer?

It's the only 2005 Tundra they have in stock, and the one listed on the "Preowned Specials" page.

  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
I'm not an expert, but have been watching the market on Tundras closely for the last month or so because mine just came off lease. I usually sell my leases and try to make a buck on them but this was the first time I couldn't do it. The market on Tundras isn't strong (nor any used truck really). I still bought out the lease because it was a fair deal and the truck works for me. From what I've seen, this one isn't a horrible price. The fact that it's a limited makes it more desirable even though the features on a limited are minimal over an SR5. Particularly in this case because it doesn't even have leather which typically was the biggest reason to upgrade to a limited (leather was an option only on limiteds). A very similar SR5 (like mine) would probably fetch closer to $21,000 in the real world. Maybe less with the high miles. I couldn't get $23,000 for mine on a private party sale with only 27k miles on the clock. I wouldn't get too hung up on this one because there are gobs of these coming off lease and many are getting turned in. Toyota was practically giving away '05/'06 Tundras on lease deals and there should be plenty of inventory around on the dealer lots.

They had huge rebates on the '07's a month or so ago, not sure if they're still out there or not but you could get a brand new crew-max 4x4 in the $26,000 range. Makes a $24,000 truck with 60k miles look like a bum deal.
  • waterdrwaterdr Member Posts: 307
It has been my experience that with higher mileage vehicles the dealers use the auction sheets. Also, it is hard to really know what the offer truly is w/o knowing how much money they are making on the other end. Unless you have bad credit, no one should be paying 9.5%. That is silly.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
I you like the trade number, then just get financing through your own bank, credit union, or online lender and pay the dealer with a check from one of them.

I have a similar car. Mine is dark blue and an auto. However, mine has 27,000 miles on it. About a month ago a Subaru dealer gave me a quote of 15,000 over the phone. I ended up not trading the car because I didn't have enough equity to buy anything nice and lower my payments.

KBB and Edmunds are showing right around $6k, which is what I asked for at two dealers earlier this week. Replies were for $3800 and $4300, respectively. One actually tried to tell me that he was close to my request b/c the $2000 he came down off MSRP on his car plus the $3800 for my trade equaled $5800, which is "how trade in is actually calculated." :confuse:

Anyway, what do you all think? I have purchased several cars in the past, but never with a trade-in that I still owed money on, so I'm looking for a little advice.

    thanks,

  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
The books are generally way off on high mileage cars such as yours. How much you owe on a car has no bearing on its resale value.

Best advice I can offer is this: because your Passat is worth so little, drive it into the ground rather than roll negative equity into another loan.

Saw an ad for this at a local upper-end used car lot (big place). In frigid S. NJ (near Philly)

    2001 BMW 330ci convertible.

Automatic, all loaded up with the usual goodies.

    SIlver, gray leather.

    68K.

    They are asking $16,995.

assuming it is clean s the board of health and not hits/runs/errors, what is a reasonable price for this puppy?

    Those are nice.

Just for reference, I've seen 2006 Miatas for the same price.

I'd take a 5 year younger Miata over that Bimmer, unless you really need that tiny back seat.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,337
yeah, I need that tiny back seat! I actually need a bigger one, but you (in this case, my kids legs) can't have everything! Although once my son gets his own car (June) it will be less of an issue.

I would be getting to use as my everyday car, not a toy.

I also did the Miata thing, and just don't fit, and my back issues haven't gotten any better.

I think you may be surprised at just how big that back seat is. I know I was. It is not much smaller than my "mid-size" volvo sedan.

Stickguy, do you REALLY want a convertible? I just can't see spending even $15k on a 7-year-old bimmer with nearly 70k miles. Seems like a big stretch to me.

I don't know about back seat size.. My 14-yr-old (who you can actually see grow) really whines about it... He's about 5' 10", at least this morning... maybe 5' 11" by the time I get home..

I'd be wary of a car like that... We lease an '05, and have about 10 months to go... No real problems, but convertibles really loosen up with time and mileage..

Plus, unless it's a stick with the Sport package, they aren't all that much fun..

06+ Miatas got more leg room. That's part of the reason I want one.

As for the back seat, my family of 4 test-fitted a lot of these and the only one that's truly roomy is the Sebring. Too bad it drives the way it does.

Actually the PT Cruiser 'vert also has tons of rear leg room, but other than that I didn't see anything appealing about them.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,337
I will wait a few years until the kids are out on their own (at least college, maybe HS with their own cars!) before getting something fun again.

I do want a convertible, although my wife won't particularly care!

I keep seeing 3 series wagons. I would love one of those. I was at the Honda dealer last night (taking our van in for service) and parked next to a guy that appeared to be cleaning out his trade. A 325it (silver over black). SHould have asked about it..

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Your dealers are pretty close to the money on this one.
If the car was in Los Angeles, there might be another $500-700 there.

what the dealer was talking about w/ the $5800 is "trade allowance", which is how most stores present trades.

Figure the car went over the block @ $13,000.
Add in recon, detail, pac, etc they are prob in the car @ $14000

Looking for a trade in guess on the following:

2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE AWD, pretty loaded (leather, sunroof, etc) except no Nav
    Dark Green, Black interior
Low milage (47K). Has been in front bumper fender bender but good repair and CarFAX is clean. Brakes/tires relatively new. Interior in Good condition, a few minimal door dings but pretty typical.

Only issue is that CD player (in dash 6 CD player) is jammed. Otherwise has been a great car.

I know that gas prices are going to hurt us on the trade (buying a Lexus RX400Hybrid).

What say the experts here? Thanks.

Just to see how I compare with Max, I'll go on the record here having recently shopped for (but not bought) one (although I still might like to) and say 7 to 8K on trade. You might get a bit more due to the very low mileage but, if anything, I'm probably already high.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    I'm gonna agree w/ CC.
You have a lousy color combo, but good miles.
In most areas I think you'll get between $7-8,000
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Color's such a funny thing - when I was shopping (for my son) in October/November this is precisely the vehicle and color combination most desired. As it turned out, he got a 4Runner that's green/tan. I was so impressed with Pathfinders that I'm keeping my eye open even though the interior is a little snug.

    Green/Tan is a lot better than Green/black.

    hey vmax.
so i heard about this CPO deal volvo is running and was hoping you could answer a couple of questions for me.

First one: what is the rate across the board? I see 1.9% for 2 years, but is that it? Or are there longer terms with higher rates available?

Second: Is the V70 really not included in the program? If so, why? I mean, I would think maybe because it is more popular, yet the prices don't seem to indicate they are in any more demand than other models, especially considering the XC90 is included in the deal. I would think, of all the models, THAT would be the one to exclude.

Third: What would the trade-in value be for an '04 V70 2.5T with premium and climate packs with about 40k miles in NJ? How about a similar '05?

    Thanks!

I'd love to have a volvo again. We're in debating mode. I mean, I know we could do it, but should we? That's the big question. It would be so much wiser to finish the 8 months on the wife's lease and buy an older volvo for cash. ugh! I hate these decisions.

You've already determined what's wisest, so do that. (I know it's never that easy!).

But if you have a good indie Volvo repair place nearby, or at least a dealer with a good service rep., I'd buy the nicest, newest car you can afford & still pay cash. Always having car payments seems like a never-ending treadmill to me......

    Just my 2 cents.

As someone who owns a vert and has two kids, I can tell you that none of the back seats are very useful in any of them. However, there are a few that do better then others. Also, in the end, we decided to buy a bit cheap (so to speak), so we could have three cars where the leg room issue was not such a big deal then.

The Sebring and the Mustang both have useable rear seats and can be bought for good prices. We went Mustang. I paid $15k for a 2000 GT vert with 37k on it back in 2003. The car would still fetch $11k - $12k today if it were still all stock. The key is that I don't drive it in the winter and the miles are still low. If you buy these things used and keep them in good shape, you would be amazed at how they hold their value. The introduction of the 2005 models also seemed to help the resale for those of us with 99 - 04 cars.

Again, with stangs, it is all about a clean car. Many of them are beaten hard, but a solid, clean one, will always fetch money.

2 Questions on trading in a car worth hopefully about 5K on the trade

    1. Would I be better off fixing up some of the front bumper scrapes (not dents but ugly nonetheless). Will a $300 repair make me anymore money when trading...seems like a good idea if going private for sure.

    2. Would I get less money a trade if buying a used car?

    Thanks
  • waterdrwaterdr Member Posts: 307
I am not a pro, but when you see a bumped-up bumper, I wonder what else the owner let go on the car....stuff you can't see.

I was going to sell a car a few years ago....cleaned it up a bit....liked it so much, I kept it for two more years.

I also think you will get a little more for a trade on a more expensive, new car.
