Forwarded the info on the Bimmers along to my friend. He says that the 2000 model is the 528i premium with 24,225 miles and looks brand new. No marks inside or out. As rworrell stated above, he did say that the 528 had more power for sure and that is a factor he liked.

He said that the initial price was $36,750, but the guy said his bottom price would be $35,500 after a little negotiating. He is doing a Carfax on it tomorrow.

    Thanks again guys!!

.... You are quite welcome ...
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Yep, I agree with Bill on the 540i ... you kinda have to through the book away on these ( the other way ) ..l...o...l.. 6 speeds are not setting the world on fire ... anywhere. They sell well New, when it comes to the pre-owned side -- that market falls down. I have seen "clean to the bone" 2000 8/15K 540's at the auctions go for about rough book $36/$37,000 ...

The $6,000 on the TC's is with the rebate .. 01 TC Limited's 10/12K..like new types, are doing around $23ish and the Boxster's are all over the place, I probably see 2/3 a week -- wonderful vehicles, but you have to have "the" buyer for them..plus Audi is breathing down their neck.

Yeah, I'm ok. The car is gonna need a new front bumper, headlight, hood and the quarter panels are going to need straightening. And new airbags. I'm still trying to get that smell out of the interior. It didn't bend the unibody though, so that's good. Oh man, I'm getting depressed again just talking about it.........

I have a 1993 Mercedes 300E sedan with 124500 miles with standard options in excellent condition inside & out. I've compared Kelly & Edmonds trade-in values & Kelly is about $2,000 less ($10,500 vs $12,500)although 3rd party & retail vaules are nearly identical. Why the difference and what can I reasonably expect to get for a trade-in in the Pacific NW?

Hate to bug you guys, but I am curious. What are Jeep Cherokees running through the auctions for these days. Say a 96 with some miles on it. I looked at a 95 Jeep Cherokee Country the other day, the interior was rough.....dog chew toy, but outside was nice. It was pretty loaded, no leather, and had 87K on it. They wanted $9400 for it......seems high to me. I am about a month away from pulling the trigger on some sort of 4WD, hubby wants me to buy a truck like his......yeah, like I want to park a monster like that everytime I get groceries!! Anyway, thanks for the info....you guys are great.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ..... And the miles are...???

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Real nice and clean Country's 4x4 (96's) ... with let's say 60K, are doing in and around the $7's .... so lets say a dealer picks it up, does a little service to it, throws the pack on --- makes it glow in the dark ..etc, etc, then you would see it on that lot for probably $9850 ...

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... You are fine at $5,700, that's a fair price ..and you are close to the wholesale side -- Besides, it's not that it has a Corolla engine -- it is a Corolla, made in the same plant in CA, just with some different popcorn on it..

    I hope this helps..

    Terry.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
The dealer here wanted $9400 for a not so clean 95 Cherokee Country with 87K on it. Just down the road there is another dealer who has a 97 Cherokee Country with 68K on it (I think), its clean, all the bells and whistles for $11,995. Uh, are these high or is it just me? BTW, how much is shipping from the lower 48 to Alaska for a SUV? Anyone know?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Well, let me be blunt with you ....l...o...l... (get it) ... Oh well.

IF, the vehicle is "all there" .... all the books and records, knee deep in rubber and xtra nice, no "plastic fantastic" in the paint, and needs -0- you are probably are looking "in and around" 5/$6,000 -- these are sometimes hard to hit, without an eyeball on them -- MB buyers will buy a high mile vehicle like this, if it's purrrfect ... on the retail side you can be looking at $8/$9,000 ....

-- What do ya' think Bill ...?

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Uuuuh Yea, that's a little on the steep side --- I don't know what the shipping cost is, but it's got to be a lot less than buying a vehicle there ....I think.

    Terry.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
I thought the prices were a bit steep on those Cherokees. Problem is if its 4WD and runs people think its worth more than retail here in Alaska. I don't mind buying something out of the states if I can get a good deal and shipping isn't too outragous. I know it costs $700 to ship from Seattle to Alaska, so I can't imagine having to pay more than $1500 for shipping from any other state.

BTW, I did shop the Jetta and have one offer of $15,000 and another of $15,500, both those places thought the guy who low-balled it at $13,500 was nuts.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
maybe I dunno Benzes but $5-6k for a 124k mile 93 300E (wasn't this ~$50k new?) on trade seems quite stingy, at least here in Chicago. I'm still seeing 90-91s getting $9-10k in retail here, but I'm not in the Pacific NW and not a dealer, though, so I digress.....
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm..

    $12,500? Huh?

Geez.. I can't see $12,500 or even $10K wholesale for that car. I also dont see $12,500 retail for it!

Miles hurt these guys a lot. Even though an MB can run forever almost... For them to break the bank, they have to have low mileage, be free of accident history, etc.. Service records (Especially as they age) are crucial, Color is also critical.

$12,500 buys me a 1993 300E Sedan in a good color with very low miles and in awesome shape.

    OK, I've bought 2 1993 300Es recently (Since August).

    1) Smoke Silver/Parchment. Flawless. 58K miles. I got that for $11K.

    2) Midnight Blue (Weak Color) with Light Grey interior. 110K on it. Very clean. I bought that for $6,500ish

So, I think Terry may be a bit low here (No offense) And I happen to be a MB Buyer (Gee, wish you were in Orlando, me and my checkbook would love to say Hi if the car is clean!)..

Depends on the color if you ask me. I assume Leather Not Tex, Cold AC, Everything works, paint is nice, no paintwork, no damage... Right?

Say you did well and got it in smoke Silver... I'd go $7,000 on it myself. Say you went Midnite Blue, That Reddish Burgandy color, Desert Taupe, or Green or something.. $5,500-6K.
There's a lot of variables out there on these puppies.

Me thinks that's where I am headed. I told my hubby I was going to buy my next car off Ebay......heck, I buy everything else there. Seriously though, I do plan on looking outside of Alaska, the prices here are nuts.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
......Keep in mind there is 3 prices when you sell a vehicle.

    1) A "asking" price

    2) A "liking" price

    3) A "taking" price

You can ask whatever price you like, it's your dime, your vehicle. A liking price is a number, we all put in our head and think "I would love to get X, and I would be a happy camper --- and then there is the taking price that most people forget about, til it's time to actually sell it .. and sometimes that's the most important price, a reality price.

I follow the Ad's in every area I'm in -closely- .. (7 papers delivered to my house) and I follow the prices, how long and the types of vehicles that run in these papers .. and I probably call 20 a week, because I buy a lot of vehicles on the private side, every month. So yes I agree that, in Chi-town they "ask" $$$, In Philly they "ask" $$$, and in Jacksonville they "ask" $$$ -- but, the reality is, the vast majority "takes" $$.

My goofy neighbor down the street .. (and he will read this .. Hey, where's my Polaris for my pool ..? ... l...o...l..) ... has his 95 Eddie Bauer 4x4 Explorer up for sale, it looks new, runs new.. except for the front clip thats been replaced and has 121,000K could pass for a 2000 -- has had it for sale for $10,500 for 5 weeks and wonders why he has had only 1 call and 10 people drive by and then wave ..goodbye ... ... Like I said before , there are 3 prices when you sell a vehicle .....

    Maybe this makes sense ....

I have done the research on what the wholesale value is on a 1998 Chevy Malibu that I am planning on trading in. According to Intellichoice, NADA, VMR International, etc. this value should be around $7,200. KBB comes in at around $5,300. I was recently at a dealer trying to close a deal and their best offer was $4,000. I live in the Boston area. The Malibu is the base model with the following: 57,000 miles, v-6, power windows and locks, cassette. The car is in pretty good shape save for a small ding in the back left.

What do you think? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
............ It's a V6, that's a big help, the miles do hurt it. If it's clean, and has new tires ... and just a few basic little scratches and or dings, that little Malibu is worth in and around $5,5/$6,000 ...if it's nice and clean --

    Terry.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Terry,

$10,500? =O Hmm.. Methinks $5K WS and like.. put it in the paper for $7,900!

rh: I think the Malibu ought to pull around $5,300-500 or so. Real money. $4K seems light to me. Who said $7,300? VMR? Sheesh...

....... I'm thinkin' $7,000 on your little GT all day long, if it's as nice as you say it is ... $7,2/400 wouldn't surprise me (on any given day) these VW's are funny little creatures.

The V6 is the saviour on the Malibu, the 4's drop it 7/8/$900 ... they are cold..real cold.

Can you tell me what the market looks like for this vehicle?
Is this type of vehicle hard to trade in at this time?
  • landru2landru2 Member Posts: 638
What do you think a '98 SVT Contour would retail for in the Northwest or California? 18,000 miles, red, no moonroof, as nice as they come.

I've had a few people tell me the market for them is much better in the US than here in the Great White North. Thanks.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.......Ok, auto.. right...? 70,000 miles doesn't help..but it's a Honda. If it clean .. no french fry invasion, no parking lot kisses, new tires ..looks and drives like a 2000, and the door dings are limited to 3/4/5 smallies --- then you are probably looking in and around the mid to high $7's for a trade, if it's nice ... and, if you are going to retail it, throw it in the paper for $9,950 ....

Remember, you can "ask" anything you want --- This may make a little more sense to you, scroll up to #3428 ....

    I hope this helps ....

...... Good morning ... how are you ..?

SVT's ...Hmmmmm, these are "quaint" little critters, kinda like "baby" SHO's ... and they are still popular, a strange group of people like em' ...l...o...l...

It's the right color, and it has "no miles" ... having a slider would help it a lot. I really can't "speak" for the NW ... and in CA, all the prices are different (whacky) --- but, I will bet this vehicle can snatch $12,000+ to the right buyer ....

    Maybe this helps....

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Where in Mi ..? ... Great description, thanks!

It's the right color and it's all "toyed up" ... the 4.0 and Scab will help it a lot. Sounds like you have taken care of it, and it's clean with no miles -- a dealer will lookin' at this at around the $10ish figure .... a lot of pickups are sold in MI..ever drive through Lansing ..? And the farther North you go, the more there is ..

    Terry.
  • wmiller4wmiller4 Member Posts: 97
Thanks. Is your appraisal based on current auction value?
I live near Lansing and took it to a Lansing Dealer and
they were only going to give me 6,800 in trade. They said
the market was "soft" right now, it wasn't 4 wheel drive, we
were going into winter and that is all they could go. I just
wanted to confirm the trade value of my vehicle in case the market
was bad for my trade right now.
I would have taken 9,000 but 6,800 for a vehicle that should be
worth 10,000ish no way. Planning on checking Detroit, Grand Rapids,
    and Kalamazoo area.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
......... It's based on the current values at the auctions, as of yesterday.

I was at the Detroit auction 5 times in the last 60 days .. and I have partners, that are there every Thursday -- the guys at Classic in Grand Rapids are friends of mine, and I'm at least, 6 auctions a month from Detroit to Philly, and that doesn't count the FL time --- Sooooo, I kinda get an idea of whats going on......maybe -- l....o....l..... Also kinda keep in mind, when I do give an "appraisal" so to speak, I don't view the vehicle, like I do at auctions. I don't have a chance to "feel, touch or smell the merchandise". I'm kinda' taking the word of the person at this forum ... also keep in mind, a great way to pick up 3/4/$500+ on a dealer trade-in is, "detail" the vehicle before it is shown ...

But anyway, depending on the dealer, they probably "low balled" you .... they are right, the market is a little soft -- special rates, 0 down, great leasing programs ..etc, etc .. but that dealer is paying "around" $6,000 for a clean, low mileage XLT - Reg Cab -, with no toys ... So, take your time and shop around.. and you will see that $9+ ....

    I hope this helps...

    Terry.
  • landru2landru2 Member Posts: 638
I just paid $12000 Canadian for it so I may have to take a trip down south. Enjoy your day.
  • wmiller4wmiller4 Member Posts: 97
Thank you for the help. I too believe in detailing the vehicle
before taking it in. Some may say it doesn't matter but I
think it shows you cared about the vehicle and took care of it.
The truck is clean believe me. I was not even including the Penda bedliner
and the Extang tonneau cover because they were not dealer installed.
I thought they were low balling but did not know for sure if the value of my trade
was down because of the economy.

I will continue to shop and hope to be successful in the Detroit market area.
    Thanks again Terry!

Hi Terry & Bill, Please help us deciding the deal. I am helping my friend to buy 2000 Accord SE Ruby Red with 24600 miles. It is "Honda certified" by the dealar & the dealer has agreed for $15700 for the car.

Friend is also trading in hi 86 Accord DX(yike!!) with 125,000 miles & he is been given $400 as real money on that !

Please let us know if this is a good deal !
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Good deal on the 2000 Accord (Even with stiff miles)

    On the 1986 Accord...

If it runs well and doesnt look like junk..

$1900/best cash offer in your local Paper.

    Bill
  • soberssobers Member Posts: 496
I also thought so, specially with that price you are assured of the Engine/Transmission warranty till 2007/100,000 miles ! 86 Accord runs well but is in need of some work I guess. So better to trade-it in & get rid off the headache ?? :-)
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Depends I guess!

Me? I'd try to retail it.. but then if you trade it.. No headaches...

I would sell the 86 Accord. Even rough Accords with 5 different shades of paint on it can pull an easy $1,000 as long as it runs.

I am looking at a friend's truck......I just found out today that its for sale. Its a 1999 Ford F-350 XLT, x-cab, long bed, 4WD, diesel, automatic, dark green, interior is immaculate, non-smoker, minor damage on the outside (thanks to her daughter) and now the kicker, the thing has 82K on it.......she shows Quarter Horses and used this truck to tow her trailer all over the state. What's a fair price? She said $24,000 or make her an offer, I hate to insult her. I am thinking in the $21,500 to $22,500 zip code....am I close? This truck is more than I wanted to spend, but its a one owner and in the long run is what I need.

What should a friend of mine be expecting to pay for a dark blue '97 Plymouth Grand Voyageur SE, with 60k miles, 3.3L V6, and pretty much standard stuff, no power seats or CD, just AM/FM cassette, with captain's chair in middle row seating.

The dealership is asking $14,900, claiming they are using KBB numbers. I checked the black book, at super clean condition (excellent) should retail for $11,875. Average (good condition) should retail for $9500. So I adviced my friend to offer $12,000 OTD in cash.

Is this right ? too much, or too little ? And what is the right price for this vehicle. Located in So Cal.

    Thanks for your help
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Yepppers, cleaning and detailing a vehicle for trade..or..retail, draws a bunch more $$ -- I get called, by a number of dealers to put a "number" on various vehicles, and I can't tell you how many times a consumer will bring in his/her (let's say) 98 DeVille , with 31K - dirty, interior looks like the McDonalds invasion just landed, coffee streaks in the carpets and of course, that beautiful touch of dirty mist on the windows ....... Ya' don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it looks like -- *^#*
.... and "bang", down goes the appraisel by 3/5/$700+ depending on the vehicle ... -- remember that commercial on TV .. Wax on..Wax off ..l....o....l...

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.......... Actually, that's a very fair price of $14,900 ---- If you are a millionaire, and you use $100 bills to light up your cigars ... what ...? Are they nut's ...?

    It's a 97 right ..? .... it's a Plymouth Voy GC...right...? With 60 Klicks right ...?

----- Unless the market as shifted 180 degree's since yesterday, it's worth in and around $7,500ish (reaL money) --- A strong retail "asking" price would be $9,999 .... I'm sorry, Am I missing something here ...?

    Terry.
  • oac3oac3 Member Posts: 373
Unbelievable, huh ? I even test drove the vehicle, just to see what it had to offer, and I can tell you, it wasn't all that, if you know what I mean. BUT, my friend and her two daughters were all over the vehicle. They couldn't wait to buy it. The dealership knew it and they worked on her. And to think she was paying CASH.

To make it interesting, I had her issue the check and leave the name blank. She handed the check to the sales guy and said, "put your dealership name on it, or I am walking".... Thank God she didn't cave in to the hard-balling they had on her. There was very little I could do about it, it ain't my money and it ain't my kinda car..... But I was there to help and lend support.

I think she is out there looking tonite. Hope she finds something. She is dead set on buying a Dodge or Plymouth Grand Caravan. That is what she wants, and that is what she intends to get. My job is to help her get the best deal she can, since she's got cold, hard CA$$ to boot.

Anyways, I will print your response for her to let her see where she should be in terms of price and the OTD cost.

    Thanks, as always, Terry.
