I am helping a friend trade in his Y2K Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with 5 speed tiptronic.

Significant options include cold weather package(heated seats and windshield washer nozzle), comfort package(sunroof, auto dimming mirrors) ,quattro all wheel drive and 5 speed tiptronic(auto).

Seats are leatherette(vinyl). The color is white with onyx interior.

It is very clean outside(no dings..just a few smallish scratches on the front bumper caused by bugs) and inside(he never smokes/eats or drinks inside and the back seat have never been used). The odo stands at 29,000 miles. Tires are original.

There is nothing wrong with the car...he is just tired of the automatic's performance and wants a manual transmission.

He is at NC. What would be a good trade in value for this? Online estimates I am getting range from 16K to 21K .

    Thanks for your help.

I plan on selling my 1997 Mercedes S420 soon but I am having trouble determining how much to ask. I tried Kelly Blue Book, NADA, and Edmunds. There was a $8000 gap between them; ranging from $39,000 to $31,000

The car is a stock S420 with three additional accessories: (1) an integrated Mercedes phone, (2) a 6-CD player, and (3) a window shade. It has 61,000 miles, relatively new tires (replaced at 55,000), all repairs and maintenance done by the local Mercedes dealer. Most of the driving was highway and long distance.

The car is in very good shape. It has never been in an accident. It has suffered the normal wear and tear of a car. Small paint chips from rocks hitting it, etc. But there is only one very small dimple. The car has two problems: (1) the windshield is somewhat pitted (you only see it if you driving into the sun, (2) and sometimes the power assist trunk needs to be reset (it pulls down and locks but not correctly. You either reset the lock manually or pull out the fuse. It then works. The dealer “tried” to fix and replaced the pump, but it still occasionally misfires.)

I plan to sell the car on EBAY. NO TRADE IN!

What do you think the car is worth and how much should I ask for. I live in Reno, NV

    OK,

Miles are a little high for an 00.. but still, these are pretty good merchandise.

I'm thinking $19,500 to maybe $20K on a trade. Or $23,900 in the local paper and take $23K.

    Hmm..

    What color is it?

If its' Smoke Silver, Black (up north), White (Down here in FL) it can make a huge difference vs Dark Green, Burgandy, Indigo..Midnight Blue..etc..

Should be a $26K or so car wholesale.. So figure you want to be around $30K retail.

I am not sure that eBay is the place to get the money for the car. But if you DO sell it on eBay, make sure you have lots of pictures.. and an honest description.

Hi Terry/Bill, Please help me with this vehicle. It is VERY CLEAN, 1998 Accord EX V6, Black Current(shade of purpule in black) with 29000 miles !

What should be the wholesale/fair retail price for this car ?
  • sunburn9999sunburn9999 Member Posts: 2
Fully loaded with leather. Pretty much every option that could be added for the model year. Color is black/black. Its been located in Texas its entire life (i.e. no winter/road salt).

Condition is good with a couple dings but the paint is clean, engine runs fine and has been well maintained and the top is in great shape. Tires are fair.

Any guesses on private sale value?

    Any ballpark numbers
  • dardson1dardson1 Member Posts: 696
I'm going to look tomorrow (private party sale) at a white 01 Tahoe LS 2WD, tan leather, tow package, power seats, cd player + cassette, and 3rd seat pkg. The guy tells me it's perfect, still looks and smells new, and it's just more car than he can afford. No price....claims he's gonna advertise it for two weeks and take the best offer. Don't much like that kinda deal but...who knows? Anyway, lots of ifs, but.... if it's like new, what's it worth?

    Hello everyone,
Im looking for a 1998 to a new 2001 silver audi a4 quattro. I would prefer one that is manual, excellent condition, sports package, with black leather/leathrette interior. If any of you know someone/dealer that can provide me with a reasonable price please drop me an email at ravage818@hotmail.com. I am looking to buy immediately. I tried to go to cherryhillimports, but the staff there are a bunch of shady individuals. thanks

My wife is looking for a 2002 Ford Explorer. We are trading in a 1995 Ford Windstar LX Van. It has 78,000 miles, full leather, dual air conditioning, privacy glass, cruise control, etc. Would appreciate a "real world trade-in value" that I should receive from the dealer (suburb of Chicago). Thank you.

.... Ok, it's a LX with the leather and dual air --- If- it's nice, clean .. new tires, hasn't hung around too many Tops supermarkets, with all those parking lot kisses and such ... it 's worth in and around the $4's (real money) maybe.... --- the miles just don't help it ...sorry.

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
... Miles ...? --- It sounds nice, it's the right color. It has the right options -- and they do sell pretty well.

2 drawbacks on this "high stepper" seller -- it's not a 4x4 (that's ok) ... but it is a 2DR... Hmmmm, a little tuff to sell (which he will find out) .. Especially when this guy is in competition with the prefered 4dr's ----

So let's assume it has 12K, and let's also assume it's "clean to the bone" .. no dings, dent's, looks and smells new ... these vehicles do in and around $26 at the auctions and the 4dr's do about $2 grand more --- a "fair asking price would be $28,900 .. and fair purchase price for both, would be "around" the high $27's or the ultra low $28's...

Not to sound negative -- people who are trying to take best offers, are usually in the tree's -- My grand dad use too tell me years ago -- "Get what you can upfront - and fight for the rest" .... Get a letter of credit from your bank ..or .. take some big CASH and drop it on his dinning room table and say -- "Hey friend I'm here to buy a vehicle tonight ... or are you just here to gamble my time " -- remember money talks ...

I will be interested on the outcome ... good luck ..

    Terry.

.. ...... Hey does this perfect Camaro got miles ...? If so, cough em' up .. and your location would help also .. remember winter is coming ...l...o..l..

    .... How are you doing ..? -- Nice vehicle... no miles --- and it's a EX V6 ..

Well by now, you know the drill -- if it's knee deep in rubber, "cleaner than the board of Health" .. and "twice as sanitary" ... these little rabbits will do the $16's at the block ... Sooo, try it out for the high $17's or the ulta low $18's and see what happens ...

I was so busy giving the details I forget the main thing.......01 Tahoe miles 8500. It is not a 2DR. It's a 4DR w/ 2WD. Saw it today....a couple of door dings but no broken paint so the dent guy can fix....oddly, it wasn't dirty but not all that clean either, there were boxes in the back?????, the floor mats were dirty, and the rear seats were sitting in the garage?????
Turns out the guy was about 22 , and the car came to his wife 3 months ago from her grandfather (recently passed), or so he said. Apparently Grandpa didn't leave her the money for gas or insurance. He apologized for not having it ready to show (they were in the middle of moving). I told him I'd prefer to drive it when it was empty, the rear seats were in, and left my phone number.
The odometer showed 8390 miles, there was a Jiffy Lube oil change sticker due @ 7450 miles (so it's been changed at least once), and it had Michelin tires which he assumed came on the car. I thought all Chevy's came with Firestone. The car seemed like 8400 miles, the leather looked good, smelled new, engine was very clean, doors/hood/tailgate all looked like a good fit. I'm supposed to drive it tomorrow afternoon. We'll see, but if you're talking close to 30k for a used 01 (4dr), that's right close to an 02 with cloth which would suit me fine. Thanks for the input and I'll keep you posted.

Thanks Again ! I have helped atleast 10 friends buying used Hondas & more friends buying the new ones ! Edmunds is a bit low on these.... 15600 (in Excellent Condition) I was thikning more sort of 16000 due to SUPERCLEAN & low miles !

I'm in the preliminary stages of trading this vehicle and would appreciate some objective opinion on what I should expect for a trade in value. It's in excellent shape, a little high on miles (70,500) black exterior/grey cloth interior, 6CD changer, moonroof, 5.0 liter v8, tow package, fairly new goodyear tires. When I run the options through the various web pages that give you trade values, I come up around 10k , but I have a feeling a dealer will try to go lower than that. I'm trying to make a decision before the low finance deals run out at the end of the month, so quick responses are appreciated.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
......... There is a lot of Exploders going thru the auctions right now .. rentals, lease returns, trades etc...

2 WD ...? Sooooo, with the miles and the competition right now (black will help or hurt you , depending on where you are from) ... I'm thinkin' you are in and around $8/$8,500 --- --- - that's if it's clean and needs -0-

Hello, just wanted to get some input from you guys on this board. Looking for a 4dr reliable car for under $2000. Prefer japanese or european with reliability. Can it be done??? What do you think from a wholesale point of view? Is the auction (or wholesaler) better for purchasing a car like this or should I go private? Any input is appreciated.
  • wheels4mewheels4me Member Posts: 36
looking at 1998 es300's certified with low miles
betw 16,000 and 23,000. The colors are black and
blue. They are asking about 23,000 dollars for
    each. What do you think?
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
There are plenty of cars under 2 grand but finding a good one will be a real challenge.

You are better off buying from an owner who has owned the car many years and has taken good care of it (and has receipts to show for the care).

In a case like this, I'd think a well-cared for Buick is a better choice than a neglected Honda.

At that price, condition is much more important than mileage or brand.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm...

Shoot for $21-22K certified. As much as they have crashed recently, a super low mile super clean ES will still do 19Kish at the auction, so figure that with recon.. the $595 warranty cost..etc...

$23K isnt outrageous at all. But $22Kish is a better #.

Important consideration: do you want FWD or RWD (where do you live?). You *can* get a Euro car for $2k, but probably not a super 'reliable' one (or at least not cheap to fix when it needs it). That said, here's what you can prob buy for $2k:

Euro, this is about it unless you go *ancient*:
pre-93 VW Golf/Jetta (watch for bad door latches, check from inside)
pre-89 Volvo 240 or 740/760 (rear wheel drive)
pre-92 Saab 900 or maybe 9000 (9000s are complex, both $$ to fix)
pre-88 BMW 528e or 318i/325e (prob not a nice one at that price)

    Asian:
Mazda 90-93 Protege (LX are great, esp w/5 spd.)/88-91 626
Honda 88-91 Civic (good choice)/86-90 Accord (EZ to find)
    Hyundai Elantra 93-95
Nissan 88-93 Sentra/88-91 Stanza (became Altima)
Toyota 88-92 Corolla/87-91 Camry/85-88 Cressida (the later is RWD)

American (often tough to find 5-speeds though):
Ford Escort 90-94/Taurus/Sable (auto trans sometimes problematic)
big rear-wheel drive Fords (Crown Vic/Merc Grand Marquis)
    GM A-bodies (Olds Ciera/Buick Century) 89-95
    Chevy Corsica and Cavalier/Pontiac Sunbird(89-94)
    Pontiac Grand Am/Olds Calais/Buick Skylark 88-91
Olds 88/98, Buick LeSabre/Electra, Pontiac Bonneville (big front-wheel drive, decent cars, great 3.8 V6 engine)

Of course, this isn't exhaustive. Check autotrader.com for private owners in your area, I probably wouldn't try dealers, the cars tend to be worse and not any cheaper. Good luck.

Blank color, 27000 miles, good condition. OK tires but there are 5-6 dings (kisses) on it. 1 of them is a major one but others are very small/minor.....

CarFax shows Lease vehicle for comirtial use.

Sunroof, cd player, 200HP engine, 7300 RPM redline are the good things on it.....

Please let us know, my frined is looking forward to buy this car
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Lease for commercial use (On CarFax) Usually means a previously leased vehicle.

I.E. My mom's daily driver to run in and out of Manhattan is a Volvo. Its' leased and the reg says "Volvo Finance of NA Richadson, TX" even though it is a NJ Reg.

    So that's no biggie.

Dings? If paint is not cracked.. dent doctor can fix them for like.. $35 or so each.

    Soo...

I think that that car is worth like (Assuming its an SH) $15-16K easily with low miles and up north...

    So $17-18K oughta be retailable..

    Bill
  • soberssobers Member Posts: 496
with the Honda SportShift.....(manual gear shifts) The paint on the car is VERY good. Dings are not so big, only one on driver door is visible....
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    OK.

    Back up about $1,500 then..

  • soberssobers Member Posts: 496
Dealer is going to certify this car so I guess around $15K + ttl should be a good price for this car ? (I can't tell you enough how much fun to drive this car is !!!)
  • curtnheidicurtnheidi Member Posts: 36
What I would really like is a pre-93 Golf 4dr. It is hard to find these vehicles though.

I am leaning towards finding a volvo 240. These cars, from my limited knowledge, offer bullet proof design and quality combined with a uniquness only found in a european car.

The protege, sentra/stanza would be my second choice.

A big buick or caddy with the V6 mentioned by ghulet would be a far third.

I am in AZ, so it would be fine to find a RWD. And it is right to expect a well-taken care of vehicle would be a better choice than a beat-up popular "reliable" car. Hondas and toyotas here fetch far above wholesale, even in the worst condition.

Looking for some input on possible values for a 97 GS-R,4dr, 25.5k, Dark Green, beige cloth. Very small ding in one door. Otherwise in very good condition.

Lease ends in February but I'm looking to unload it now to trade in for 2002 Passat. The VW dealership's in my area (Sacramento, CA) both have Acura dealers as part of the auto group.

Residual right now is just over 12k. NADA, Edmunds, and KBB range from 13k to 14.5k. I'm pretty certain they could "certify" this one through Acura. Just trying to find out what's realistic.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
I just got rid of an 89 Golf 4 door, w/beautiful body but a blown head gasket. Long story. It was fun, quick, roomy, safe (I crashed an 85 once also, it held up very well). The damn doors, though, were super annoying (TWO would not open from outside).

Also had a 90 Protege LX 5 speed (power everything, quick, fairly roomy, reliable), it was stolen, then found one day after buying the above Golf.

Bottom line, I loved both cars, both were less than $2k. If you get a Golf, make it a 5 speed, it makes all the difference (auto is 3 speed, annoying on highway and slow). I don't know enough about Volvos to give any advice, though lots of friends/acquaintances have them here. In Chicago, they're the popular 'indie rock' car.

The main reason I've never had a Honda or Toyota is their prices. Lots of $2k rustbuckets here, I have to own a car that is also decent looking, even at $2k. I also don't like the fact that older Hondas practically ride on the ground, they feel unsafe and the 'legs straight out' seating position is not comfortable.

Keep trying to find a Golf, they should be around, especially in the nice AZ weather.

I am looking at a used 2000 Acura Rl 3.5, black/black with Navigation and less than 10000 mi. No dings that I can see. Appears to be in excellent condition. What is a good deal on this car? Thanks for any advice that you can give.

    ...... Ok let's see ...

It's a extended cab, that's a big help, it's a V8, that's another big help. The color can -- help you ..or hurt you, depending on were you are from -- and the miles are right ..2WD..?

"IF" ... it's xtra nice and clean, tires are new, it hasn't visited the world of Mcdonalds too much (french fry invasions are nasty, this time of year) .. l....o....l.... and if someone hasn't used it at a shopping mall for Ping Pong practice ... and it looks, and drives new ----- you are going to be "in and around" the high $14's...( real money )

    I hope this helps ...

Almost bought a truck last night, but wanted to think about it first......felt too much like an impulse buy. I went in there to give my saleslady some riding boots for her daughter, not to buy a truck.

1999 Ford F-250, x-cab, long bed, 4WD, Powerstroke diesel, 6-speed manual, XLT, 87K, new tires, tan/tan, minor lot damage on the front fender, just a little ding, other than that the truck was clean in and out. Ford dealer was asking $25,050 but would let it go for $21,150. They also offered $16,900 real money for my Jetta. Soooo, what's a fair price for this truck, is $21,150 + fees good? Oh, did I mention the truck has been on the lot for 250+ days??
  • maureenk1maureenk1 Member Posts: 11
thanks for helping me through this process. I am beginning to think I like root canals more than buying a car.
I had asked for a trade-in price for a 96 Honda Accord, LX--in great condition. Most sites are in the ballpark of $7700.
Yesterday, a salesperson pulled out a book with recent weekly dates and said I will only get $6000.00 for the 96 Accord. This was some type of auction book.
Is this another ploy--he did have a great price on a leftover pathfinder. I look dumb sometimes, but not all the time! :) thanks for any advice or insight! maureen

. . .thanks for all the information on this message board it has been very helpful.

I am currently in the market to buy a Toyota Highlander v6 4x2 non ltd, and North County Toyota quoted me $500 over invoice (which seems like a good price). My question is I have a 97' Explorer AWD Eddie Bauer V8, with 129,000 miles on it (fully loaded 4dr with special edition EB leather, Burgandy ext., and I live in Southern California) Kelley Blue book quotes - $9,920 for trade in and Edmunds quotes $9,746. The car is in good condition and has never given me any problems (knock on wood). I have a small crack in the windshield and the "check engine" light just came on (emmissions control malfunction). Can I expect to get a trade in price at KBB and Edmunds estimates or will it be much lower? I just want to see what I should expect.

    Thanks for your help.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Ouch...

You are not gonna like me. I'm sure its a nice truck (Have your ins co replace that windsheild.. most states they do it for free) but those miles kill it. Oohh...

    Sheesh. You're gonna hate me.

$6,000-6,500 is where I think its' gonna get hit in California. The Check Engine light out there will scare anyone who hits it I think because of their smog laws.

    Sorry for the bad news...
