I hope waiting works for you. here's an interesting article from the Albany, NY area about some dealers not accepting SUVs as trade-ins:

I work as a ship pilot on the Miss. river in NO and we used to get a few ships from Saudi Arabia. Nestled between the containers would be dozens of lightly used suburbans and other large suv's. I wondered why they didn't just get new ones. Now I know. Thanks.

    What do you think? :)
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
It really depends on the engine.
An Accord V6,esp an older one isn't likely to suffer a fuel related drop in value.
I could see some of the bigger 6 cyl, 3.5 to 4.0L, dropping in value though.

I think price is more of an issue.
Less expensive cars w/ small engines are doing better on used car lots that more expensive cars w/ small engines.
We can't keep older S40's and S60's in stock and the auction prices for those cars are ridiculous right now.

Soo... to put a different spin on the SUV market tanking...

I'm in the market for a '98 and up Land Cruiser (with the V8) as a second vehicle (dogs, snow truck, Home Depot runs, camping -- you get the picture), so the 12 mpg doesn't scare me. What's a good purchase price for one of these? Say a 1999-2001 with under 100K miles (due to the timing belt/water pump service at 90K)?

Around these parts (Colorado) most dealers still seem to think they're worth their weight in gold, although they can't sell them. Any auction data on these would be appreciated too.

    Thanks guys!!

Fisrt off, thank you volvomax for all your help!

Long time lurker here, with "new car itch"... so trying to figure out the numbers on my recently paid off 03 Mustang.

    Houston, TX
    2003 Mustang V6 Coupe
    RWD
    Red with tan interior
    55,500 miles
Pony package (yes, it was called that on the sticker)
90% of service done at the dealership (have all records)
    New tires 5 months ago.
Only owner - non smoker, no kids, no pets. (No eating or drinking in my baby either!)
    Mach sound system
    viper alarm

Interior very clean and in excellent condition (no stains, tears, etc.)

Exterior looks very good (I still get compliments on her), but it was in a minor fender bender and had both bumpers repainted (perfect color match). No body damage.

Unfortunately, somebody tried to steal her a couple of years back, so driver's door lock doesn't work (I get in with my alarm, which unlocks both doors)

I'd like to know both trade and private sale values and also if it is woth it to fix the lock before I trade/sell.

    Thank you!

    YIKES! on the miles.
Car is probably worth $10,000 or so on a trade.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Land Crushers are funny creatures.
Even w/ over 100k they are bringing over $10 grand at auction(98 models)
So, you may have to pay $12k or more
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Sounds like a good car for Craigs list.
    Trades prob $6-7,000
However, a Fast and Furious type might pay $9-10k private party.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
The same thing is true here in Ohio where the price of gas doesn't much seem to have affected the price of 'em. Local Toyota store has a '98 with 125K on it for 14 and it's not all that nice. IIRC, stability control was first added in '00.

I looked at a '97 yesterday at an out of town Toyota store. That's the last year of the previous bodystyle. It had low miles (100K) with a beautiful body and was priced at $10,900 which seemed like a fair asking number until the salesman advised that the AC didn't work. He said that they didn't want to put any money into it until they had a serious buyer because, otherwise, they would eventually send it to auction. Yikes - it gets hot here in the summer!
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I'm a long time TLC shopper too. Maybe trying private sellers would be better than dealers?--people who can't afford the $4/gal. & 12mpg anymore.....Toyota dealers may never come to their senses on pricing of used LC's. (altho that used '97, if they truly "fixed" the A/C, & it was really really nice, sounds interesting).

And/or: wait until gas hits $5, $5.50, etc......shouldn't be long......
  • byumbyum Member Posts: 13
Thank you very much for the input volvomax. I was hoping I could move it for around 8k private party. :)
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Should be easy if its a nice car.
    Good Luck!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    I dunno.
Most of these rigs are paid for. So, the only expense is the gas.
LC people tend to use these things for what they were concieved for. Off roading.
It would explain why they have retained their value.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Sorry I missed your post.
Trade is probably $6-7,000 dpending on condition.
Private party a couple grand more.
I would certainly get the lock fixed prior to a private sale.

    volvomax,

Looks like you provide a great service to everyone here!! I've been following this forum for a while as I prepare to make a car change. I would like to thank you in advance for any help and insight you can give me on the value of my current (soon to be ex) car.

I currently drive a 2002 BMW 330i and I love it, however the lack of cargo space has become a big enough problem for me that I need to get something else.

What should the trade in value be for my car?

    Austin, TX
    2002 BMW 330i
Orient Blue Metallic paint (Dark Blue)
    Sand Leather interior
    95,500 miles
    Premium Package
    Sport Package
    Automatic Transmission
    Bi-xenon Headlights
    BMW Alarm system
Trunk Mounted 6 Disc CD changer (single CD changer in the dash)
100% of service done at the BMW of Austin (have all records)
Tires have at least 50% life remaining
    Brakes ~ 50% remaining
Only owner - non smoker, no pets.
Interior and exterior are both in good shape (no tears or stains, no dents, one minor mark on the rear bumper and some minor scraps on the right rear rim)

This car has never had any body work done on it.

I don't think it will matter but the 100,000 mile service is already paid for if it happens before September.

    Thanks!!

    Thanks Volvomax!
That's close to the numbers I was thinking about.

Older 3 series are good merchandise, if the car is well kept.
I think your car would bring @ $9000 on a trade.

Here's an interesting story. I stopped by a GM dealersip the other day to window shop. After a test drive they wanted to sell me a vehicle (obviously :D). I wasn't there to buy, only to get ideas on what I would eventually replace my truck with. They offered to buy my truck from me. I said how much. I gave them the info and they took it back to the manager and they came back with $2500. I looked at them like they were crazy! To be fair, I hadn't booked my truck out in a while so I wasn't completely sure what it was worth, but figured it wasn't that low. They bandied about trying to get me to make a deal and finally came back with a price of $5000. I still said no deal and left since I wasn't interested in selling. In fact when I do buy a new vehicle I will probably keep my old since has been such a great vehicle.

Anyway, just for fun I decided to run the numbers to see what my vehicle is really worth. I have posted below the vehicle info and what Edmunds quoted as "real world trad-in" and Kelly Blue Book trade-in.

    Make: Chevrolet
    Model: S-10 Ex-cab LS
    Mileage: 100,000
    Options:
    LS package
CD player w/subwoofer and XM Radio
    Cruise Control
    Wide Tires/Premium Wheels
    Perfect Upholstry
    3rd Door
    Chrome Bumpers
    Cold A/C
    Bed Liner
    Tow Package
    4.3l V6 Motor
    Auto Trans
    Body in overall good condition
    Tinted windows

Kelly Blue Book Good Condition Price: $6690
Edmunds Real World Trade-in Value: $5600

So as you can see, the first original offer would have been a total steal from me. The final offer wasn't too bad, but still about 600 off from what Edmunds quotes and almost 1700 from Kelly. In all seriousness if I were to sell it I would sell it on the street and those values are closer to 8000. If I had taken the dealer's first deal I could be losing out on a potential 6000!!

Make sure you do your homework before accepting a dealer's trade-in offer......
  • the_big_althe_big_al Member Posts: 1,079
oops .... sorry, that would be important huh?? It's a 2001. I thought I had included it but looks like I forgot! :D Also located in Phx Az.......
  • the_big_althe_big_al Member Posts: 1,079
hmmm.... interesting note. Then why does Edmunds and Kelly place much higher values on my truck? If those are real world values, than why don't these sites reflect at least closer to those prices? Not that I would like to "trick" someone into buying my vehicle for 10K as I know it's not worth that much, but if I were to sell it I would put it up for around what these two sites are quoting.

Anyway, I doubt I will ever sell my truck. It's paid off and although it has 100K on it, still runs and drives great. I'll probably drive it till the wheels fall off and then I'll just give it away... :D

    Oh yeah - it's a 2WD.... :D
  • the_big_althe_big_al Member Posts: 1,079
Yes the LS is only an options package. And the V6 is much less common than the 4 and by far a superior motor. You couldn't convince to buy even a 5K mile S-10 with the 4 cylinder motor. But with the V6 it makes it a very viable pickup. I have searched and a lot of what I came up with is 4 cylinder models. As to the comment made previous, I think that maybe my estimate of close to 8K for my vehicle might be a bit much. I don't know if I would pay that if the vehicle had 100K on it as I wouldn't know the history behind the vehicle. But knock the price down to 6K or so and I would feel that is a good deal. Especially if the truck was well maintained and came back with a clean carfax report.
  • the_big_althe_big_al Member Posts: 1,079
hey hey! If I were really into the market for a new truck I would offer to buy your dad's S-10.... :D 17K is pretty good! The only thing I worry about in 4x4 S-10's is reliability on certain parts. However the ones that actually have problems are not very many. But other than that the S-10 is a pretty stout truck... Mine's going strong at 100K, albiet 2wd... At least it has the V6. The 4-banger was nothing to write home about. :D

Best advice?? Sell it on the street. Or try E-bay. That might work to get the price you are looking for.
  • woods77woods77 Member Posts: 23
Thanks for your advice. Looks like the sale will go through tomorrow for $9100. Makes me very happy. :D

Nuts. That car is 6 years old. The remaining '08 Corollas (old body style) were broomed out to the tune of $12-14 for LEs, depending on which market you're in.

Congratulations on getting a ton of money for your old car. Good timing.

Looking at trading this in but values from KBB to Edmunds are very different. Dealer has offered mid KBB of $9500. Tells me it's correct as KBB is used on west coast and Edmunds is not. Dealer commented it was a clean car and taken care of.

    Location: Portland, OR
    Year/Make/Model:2005 Forester X
    Body Style: wagon
Engine: 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder, manual
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 54600
Color: exterior: Dark Blue/ interior: Grey, privacy glass
Condition: Clean interior, some scratches but waxed and good shine
    Tires - 70 % worn
    Maintenance up to date

Looking at moving up to a pre-owned Subaru Legacy GT

    Legacy GT Sedan 2008
Engine: 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder, manual, Turbo
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 3599
Color: exterior: Black Interior: off black leather
Condition: Clean, hard water spots on the front fenders and hood. Dealer agrees to have car buffed out.
Tires Show small wear on edges indicating someone probably drove it hard for some of the miles

They have offered this vehicle for 23,888 but want to roll the difference of my lease buyout of $1000 over raising the price to $24,888. Not sure if this is a good deal either as no blue book out on this car yet. Invoice is around $27,500.

Any thoughts are appreciated and thanks for all your service to everyone on the blog, forum, group. :)

I think they are right on the money on the trade.
If it was an auto it would probably be worth more.

Price for the 08 is pretty good.
Avg auction for an auto is between $22500-23,000

want to roll the difference of my lease buyout of $1000 over raising the price to $24,888.

What are the details on your lease? How many months left? How much per month is the payment? Are you over the miles?

  • carjunkicarjunki Member Posts: 6
Thanks volvomax for the reassurance. I am working with the Internet sales manager and were dealing wholesale to wholesale but was sure what price the Legacy fell into.

Can you comment at all though on the response that the west coast uses KBB values and nothing else. More or less just looking for info on that for future reference.

Thanks again....looks like it's time to get the Legacy. ;)
  • carjunkicarjunki Member Posts: 6
6 months left on my lease. Miles are very close could end up possibly a thousand or two over depending on what I decide to do this summer. Payment is $269. a month and the residual is around $8700. I was off on my buyout it's $10,400 so the shortfall is $900.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
West Coast references KBB, but doesn't really use it's values.
At least, not on the trade in side.
Black book and Manheim auction figures are what is used.
In your case, Manheim and KBB agreed.
    Doesn't happen often.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,733
well, if you really want out of the car now, $900 isn't that bad of a penalty.

I think the dealer was more than fair. Usually they come in *way* below KBB for a trade here in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Go for that Legacy, you'll enjoy it.
  • carjunkicarjunki Member Posts: 6
Great to hear and thanks to all for your input. Yes, the dealer seems very fair and I am more less just wanted to check since this is the first business I have ever conducted with this particular dealer. But looks like were off to the start of good long term relationship.

Ateixeria I think your right and I'll enjoy the Legacy too. Test Drove it yesterday and man has Subaru really refined the Legacy. I have drove Subaru's for over 10 years and I must say they have really came steps above with this model.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
IMHO the 2005 model year was a huge step up in refinement.

We had a 2002, and it was OK, perfectly reliable, but not on par with the 2005+ models.

Ironically, we did the opposite - we traded that 02 Legacy wagon for a new 09 Forester.

The new Legacy is more refined but wifey wanted to sit higher up this time around.

Depending on what the Carfax shows, trade in is somewhere between $10-11,000
  • carjunkicarjunki Member Posts: 6
I completely agree with your refinement statements. Actually the last new subie I looked at was around 05 when I leased the Forester. Now I am on the flip side of your wife and want to sit low again! I miss the old RS and WRX's that I owned.

Just found and 07 GT too with only 5600 miles. Only other difference is it's an automatic. Dealer has offered it to me for 24,900 might go look at that too and see if I can get a little more on my trade. I am in Subaru country up here and the values usally stay fairly good on Subaru's hence the first $9500 offer. :P

    $8-9,000 trade.
    Couple grand more private party(maybe).
Not much of a market for 100k 2wd gas sucking behemoth SUV's right now.
If it were 4WD, you would have better luck, only because the dealer,or yourself, could sell the car in a cold weather state.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th.

Need a valuation from you when you get a chance. Folks are looking for an Infiniti QX4. Found one locally but need some pricing insight.

    2003 Infiniti QX4
    67,000 miles
    2WD
    Silver with beige leather
In dash NAVI (pretty rare on these)
    New tires
    Sunroof
Pretty much loaded, 2003 was the last year of these things and there were few options. The only options this one has is the Navi.

Dealer is asking about $17,000, which makes this one of the most expensive used QX4's around. For comparison, a dealer in a nearby state is asking $15,500 for a very similar one and another dealer is in the $14's for a 2002 with a few more miles on it.

This was probably a local trade and the dealer had to pay up for it to make a deal. Still, I'd like an idea of wholesale and realistic retail before I go over and see it. If its nice and the price is right, my folks would probably buy it.

    Thanks for the info!!

    Wholesale was probably @ $10,000.
Which makes the retail @ $15,000
