research says only a few HUNDRED LX's are sold each month. from jan '08 through end of july 2008, about 5,000 '08's were sold. for the same period in '07, 1750 were sold. there people out there who like them, just not a lot.

    Should trade @ $6,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Is it a CPO car?

That truck would probably bring decent money at the auction because of the miles.
    Anywhere from $12-14,000 right now.
A couple of months ago and it would have brought $16-18,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
With 2 accidents, its probably a $10,000 car.
Esp if there was frame damage or a bad Carfax.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Hail damage probably means a bad Carfax.
In which case, car could drop to $15-16,000

Unmolested it could see as much as $20,000
  • sanjaysdcasanjaysdca Member Posts: 269
    Thats true
They dont sell that many... feeds into exclusivity
I guess number of people is enough for LX to keep good resale.

In fact this is a good time to buy a SUV/Minivan (If you need/want one)

Well, there is no LT designation for the PT Cruiser.
There is a GT and a Limited.
Yours sounds more like a Limited.
So, it would trade for @ $9-10,000

Figure another couple grand on Craigs list.
  • nortsr1nortsr1 Member Posts: 1,060
Yes, it is a Limited. Thanks for the info.
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
Everyone, what do you think is the most that you can sell a car for prinvately without going through major aggravation? I figure about 10 grand.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,270
Thanks for the values! I don't think it's a CPO. This is the part of my car-searching process where Terry would tell me something like "figure out what you want--you're all over the map here!"
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That matches my experience, so I'd tend to agree.

Let's see, I've sold a Forester, my wife's 626, and her old Legacy, all for $6-8 grand in cash. All fairly easily since no loans were involved.

I think if you get much higher, a loan is likely and then banks and delays are likely.

I just pulled a CarFax report and it came back clean. The hail damage was very minor and was repaired. Looks like I am good to go.

Here's one for volvomax - I've heard stories that 70K miles is a point where values change dramatically on used cars - any truth to this? A few months ago you gave me a figure on my car and I'm at 65k on a
2003 Honda Element EX 4wd automatic
    Dark Blue
    All maintenance current
    Tires at 50%
Brakes and struts have 12k on them
Roof racks and running boards from Honda
    Chicago area.
I'm considering trading, but am wondering if the value drops more than typical once the miles hit 70K or is that some kind of urban myth?
    thanks.

I've heard stories that 70K miles is a point where values change dramatically on used cars - any truth to this?

I'm not volvomax, but I'll answer that part of your question: No, especially not on a Honda. Used Hondas bring really good money, especially if they're in good shape.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
My guess is that it's probably 100k.

60k if you haven't done the timing belt. In fact once you cross that barrier most buyers will ask you for receipts to prove it.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,270
    I thought the four-cylinder Accord/Element/CR-V engine in 2003 had a timing chain.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I believe it does, but I'm talking about car values overall, not specifically for that model.

Most buyers will still ask, believe it or not. If I were selling a car with that engine I would take along some documentation that says it has a timing chain, so the buyer knows it does not have to be changed.

I just sold a Legacy with more than 60k miles and the buyer asked - I showed him the part in the manual that specifies the interval for a timing belt change for that model is actually 105k miles, and that satisfied him. He did buy the car, too. :shades:

$69k sticker? Talk about sticker shock.

It is a V8 and AWD, but still. Watch, it'll be in the $40s now.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
    Meaning 40s would be low?

It wouldn't suprise me if the auction number is less than 40.

Condition: excellent condition for the mostly highway miles. Always handwashed, looks great. Good tires, all maintenance up to date, needs nothing.
Other: The car is a BMW CPO with transferrable warranty to 100K miles or August 2010. I am the second owner, having owned the car since it had 6,800 miles on it. It literally drives like new, just checked out by the dealer. No accidents/paintwork whatsoever.

Only reason considering getting rid of it... on the fence on getting a cheaper 4x4 to fit two large dogs in and keeping the car, or going to a nicer SUV/AWD wagon.

I know the miles are high... **bracing for the collective wisdom of edmunds car sales peeps***... :):)

Want to know which of these two is a better buy. Cars are located at a used dealer in Pittsburgh.

2007 Toyota Higlander, V6, AWD, 30K, silver, a pretty base model.

or, 2007 Ford Edge SE, AWD, 30k, gray.

They are both priced at 17,000. Is the Toyota more reliable?

    Thanks for the help.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Yeah.

I guess I'm just shocked to see a Caddy near $70 grand. It does have everything, I suppose.

Thing is, as a used car, how many people are shopping for a used Caddy in the $50,000 price range? Only a CPO dealer could sell something like that.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Hmm, ALG rates both at 3 stars for resale. I'm surprised the Highlander isn't pricier, though I guess it has less equipment.

How had Ford's new 3.5l Duratec been so far? It may be too new to have a lot data.

Come to think of it, Toyota's 2GR 3.5l V6 is also fairly new, though it's done well so far (I have that engine in my Sienna). Some of the U660E 6 speed automatic transmissions have been troublesome, though in this case you are safe because the Highlander uses the older U151E 5 speed.

Have you seen what 2005 (current generation) STS-es are selling for on eBay? In the $20s. It'd be tempting if it weren't the first model year. And I still remember the experience graphicguy had with his mother's 2005 STS.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Those are bargains. I bet first-year Acura RLs are like that, too.
  • robbiegrobbieg Member Posts: 350
Some V6 models are selling for less than 20K. Check the completed listings.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,270
Haven't checked lately. The thing that frustrates me about eBayMotors is that nearly everything has a reserve, and 90+% of the stuff doesn't sell because the reserve is set way too high.
  • robbiegrobbieg Member Posts: 350
I agree. It is even worse sometimes because they now throw "classified" ads at you. At least in my area, these are way high. The "best offer" ads also frequently are really high. That being said, ebay sort of helps you to find a price because there are some ebay dealers that price cars to move. After a while you figure out who they are and you can go staight to their website for pricing information.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Really depends more on the year.
    An 03 w/ 70k isn't as big a hit as an 05 w/ 70k.

Lux cars take hits after 50k because their warranties expire.
All cars take a hit after 100k.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
With those miles, auction price ranges from $35-39k.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Car should trade in the $12's.
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,720
i had an '07 edge se for 5 days as an insurance loaner.
it had 34k on it when i got picked up, put about 400 on it.
drivetrain was great, although 3.5/6 speed was a new setup, and overall it drove really well.
i drove it with a/c on all the time and drove a little faster than i usually do to try to emulate the wife driving it, got 20 mpg.
it had new tires, oem replacement hankooks. they were terrible tires.
i would get a carfax, check the brakes/tires, and run them on the highway, to see how it goes.
don't have any experience with the highlander.
    good luck!

New run flat tires on the rear, front tires will need replacement soon.
Maintenance is up to date and drives great.

Coming to the end of lease and would like to buy but thought I would get the collective thoughts of this board before I settled on the price. The residual is 24,300 and they are offering to CPO for 1895 to extend the warranty. They are also offering extended maintenance for 1995. Not sure what I could use as additional leverage to reduce the price if need be.

    Thank you in advance!

While driving around the lots on a lazy Panama City, Florida Sunday afternoon, wife spotted a 2004 Porsche Cayenne Turbo on a Toyota lot and wanted to stop and take a look. Don't know if they have had it long, but the little info on their website says its got 72,000 miles and they're asking $29,999. :surprise:
Did an Edmunds appraisal and even without any added options, it dealer sells at just over $44,000. I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow since we are in the market to replace a soon to be lease-returned Odyssey van, though I'm a little leery giving my wife something with that much power. Of everything we've looked at, this is the first time she's had that "I want that" look on her face.
Is there something I should be looking for as to why it would be listed at that low a price? Maybe a drug dealer car picked up at a gov't auction?
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,270
Miles are high. Get a Carfax report, and get it checked out by a mechanic. Even if everything checks out, I'd want to have plenty of cash on hand for repair costs on an out-of-warranty turbocharged Porsche.
  • kgabekgabe Member Posts: 25
I thought around $37K too. About 55% of sticker. Talk about losing value? These STS's are the ultimate money losers.
  • etjetj Member Posts: 12
I realized I didn't ask a question in my last post. :confuse:

Does anyone have a suggested auction price for this configuration?

    Thanks again!
  • 1stnewcarinyrs1stnewcarinyrs Member Posts: 7
Roadburner suggested I ask the question of what is a good deal in this forum:
BMW525i, 4door, 21K miles, auto, rwd, Grey ext/black interior, very clean and certified
The dealer wanted $31995 as the internet price which is $1000 off. The price was recently lowered so I am thinking the internet price is now $30,995.
The Edmunds TMV is $28,711 and the sales consultant did not want to sell for that price.
What would be a good deal?
  • danbone111danbone111 Member Posts: 47
To use as a gauge for this 2005 525i, this past weekend, I sold a 2004 BMW 525i, 25k miles, Auto, also Grey/Black leather, non certified, for $25k. I am also located in NJ. I feel that I sold the car slightly below market price, considering the low mileage. However, it was time for the car to go. Despite being a year newer and certified, I still feel that $30,995 is a strong price for that car. There are many 530's out there, even 530xi's, that can be purchased for $31k, and it appears that they are much more desirable than the 525. Hope this helps you.
  • 1stnewcarinyrs1stnewcarinyrs Member Posts: 7
If I understand you the price of 31K for a 2005 525i is high considering that 530s in rwd and awd are selling at or around the same price. Do you agree?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    An 07 w/ 47k, yikes!

Well, it should be a cheap car.
Trade in should be anywhere from $6-8,000
Private party a couple grand more.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Car is probably a $20k car at the auction.
I don't know if BMW Credit will negotiate with you.
Most of the captive finance companies don't.
If they don't you will likely be paying retail money for your car as a CPO.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
As corvette says, the miles are high.
If there is a comprehensive extended warranty available I'd grab it.

Price is ok for the miles, not great.
I'd try to whittle a couple grand off the price.
  • danbone111danbone111 Member Posts: 47
I guess what I am trying to say is that $31k for that certified 2005 BMW 525 is not overpriced, but just that it's full, full price. Not that there's anything wrong with paying full price if you're really getting a 'full price' car-ie. new tires, impeccable condition, certified, etc. However, in other words, I really think you can do better, not necessarily on price, but that you can get more 'value' for your money by purchasing a 530 at the same price. Hope this gives a little more clarification/help.
  • 1stnewcarinyrs1stnewcarinyrs Member Posts: 7
Thank you, very helpful. Based on your comments, I am now searching for late model 530i's with rwd
  • etjetj Member Posts: 12
Thanks for the info! Like you said, BMW Finance will not negotiate on the residuaI. But, I asked a couple different dealers for the price they will buy the car from BMW Finance in the CPO process(maybe not the most objective) and they told me 23,263. The best deal I have found is to get the car at 23,900 and then get CPO'd for 1895.

This is what I think I'll do since I like the car. I've looked around other forums and think this is a good price for the extended warranty.

    Thanks again!
