To piggyback off of your post on X5 numbers, I'm interested in these but am also interested in numbers for X3s and Lexus RX330s from 2006 as well. Must have leather seats, AWD, and heated seats (I live just outside of Cleveland :) )

I'm interested in buying a CPO, so I would also appreciate any negotiating/buying tips for those, or realistic target price for CPO (X amount below asking, etc).

    My trade-in:
    Black 2005 Dodge Durango
    Limited, AWD, w/ Hemi
48,000 miles (bought it CPO 8year, 80,000 miles... if that matters)
Moonroof, Nav, Rear Air, Rear DVD
Body's in good shape, a few minor dings/scratches, Interior is good (no rips, etc).
Normal wear on tires etc., replaced a few things like brake pads, as needed.
Overall it's in pretty good condition.

I thought about this for a while...you may want to list it for sale in upscale neighborhoods, where buyers tend to be more image-conscious, and therefore willing to pay a premium for the Jaguar name.

Here in the DC area, that would include Bethesda, MD, and McLean, VA, for instance.

But if the car is in FL on the gulf coast, it's probably not worth the effort to ship it up here. Just advertise in upscale areas in FL.

Just a thought. Target the marketing in local publications in those areas.

I don't want to be mean but I think you should move on and try to get a new '08 for about the same price while you can. There're always some crazy people out there who are willing to pay top $$ for used cars b/c they think they get great deals.

I bought this for my wife AFTER I left the DC area(N.VA), the AWD would definitely come in handy. Alot of people in DC, like me, had to be at work, regardless of weather, no excuses. I had other AWD vehicles at the time which worked fine, but I witnessed more that one vehicle flipped on its roof during the minor snows they get. Thanks for the advice.

"Volvomax has essentially confirmed my opinion that your car has limited value because it was never a strong seller" Don't think so. My non-sport 2.5 X-type had an MSRP of $29965 (source: http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/2003-jaguar-x-type-2.htm). Volvomax put a retail number on the car of $10,000. That means over the last 6 years it has depreciated an average of 11% per year, or roughly 66.67%. Wow. I can name 4 or 5 Mercedes(E-class,M-class,R-class,C-class)and at least 3 BMW's (X3,X5,Z4) that have depreciated at the same rate in just 4 years, and they left the dealer lots like they were on fire. The rate at which a vehicle depreciates is obviously more complex than just how well it sold as new. Speaking of which, my wife's particular Jaguar is still the best selling Jaguar model in the history of the company, selling 50,000 models in 2003 alone, (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_X-Type). Unlike you, LongIslander, I have supported every point I have made with documentation. YOU are the one who started this, making false claims about the Ford Mondeo's safety record(based on your memory), which I rebuffed with actual crash data(4 out of 5 stars). (Source: http://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/story/?nID=26344). Of course the data was from the European Testing organization, NCAP, it was designed and built in Europe(duh). But I knew a person like you would try and discount this, which is why I also referenced the US NHTSA test results, rating the X-type at 4 out of 5 stars, again, well above average (source:http://www.nhtsa.com/). As I have documented, the car did not score poorly in crash test results, here or abroad, and is the all-time best-selling Jaguar. Regardless of what someone may "think" about the model, it was built by Jaguar craftsman in a Jaguar plant in England. Is it an XJ? No. Did it's sales numbers fall after it's initial release? Absolutely, as have many others. Do these factors have any bearing on it's current "limited" value, as you put it. Absolutley not. All cars have "limited" value, but the unsubstantiated reasons you gave regarding the car were patently false, which is why you are acting so arrogant. You were caught red-handed looking like an uninformed boob. But it could be worse. You could be a New Yorker who works on Wall Street and due to incompetence and outright theft, have caused the largest financial crisis in this country since the Great Depression. You know where I work, you don't work on Wall Street, do you?
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
You are going to have a long row to hoe if you are trying to convince anyone here that the X-type is either a well-liked car or that it holds its value well.

Boy, you really don't get it, do you?

    1. Do you run an auto dealership or are you in the armed forces? You're never going to get retail value for your car because you're not a retailer. (Duh!) Edmunds trade-in and private sale values, respectively, are $7,735 and $9,161. If you trade, you won't likely get that amount, because dealers don't use Edmunds. They use auction prices, such as Manheim, which tend to be even lower. When I traded my Tribute, Edmunds was around $9,000-$10,000 and the dealer offered me $8,500. I was suprised, but unlike you, I decided to do my homework and listen to others instead of hurling ignorant insults. As I recall, Volvomax had placed it at $8,000. You'll be lucky to get $7K on a trade and, most likely, less than that. (Volvomax, you do a great job in enlightening people. Maybe you can give this guy a realistic value for his trade.)

    2. The Duratec 2.5L in your car was developed by Ford in 1993 and, in addition to your Mondeo/Jaguar, was used in the American Contour, Cougar and other cars. Oh, by the way, I was wrong. The engine in my $22,400 Tribute -- now worth about the same used as your Mondeo/Jaguar that cost thousands more when new (and you probably paid a lot more than $29K+ with options) -- was not the 2.5L, but the more powerful 3.0L. This was the same engine found in the S-type, the model above your car. If you knew anything about cars, you'd realize that most manufacturers today develop components for multi-country applications. Your Mondeo/Jaguar is about as British as you are.

    3. Your Mondeo/Jaguar did not get a single five-star crash rating and side impact was "marginal." Unfortunately, it didn't have the build quality of the five-star-rated Subarus you criticize (made, by the way, by patriotic Americans in Indiana who pay the tab for you and others in Iraq). Many reviewers noted the cheapness of the X-type interior and other shortcomings in a car for this price.

Bottom line: you didn't make a great choice in cars. Get over it and take your lumps like others do on this forum.

I won't dignify your other smears about New Yorkers, other than to point out that NY Senator Chuck Schumer is the one who's asking tough questions on behalf of you, me and other taxpayers in this mess (created, no doubt, by people you probably voted for). When you leave the service, I hope you'll take your educational benefits -- that you get with my tax dollars -- and use them to acquire some manners and some knowledge. Based on your forum postings, you'll need them if you ever want gainful employment in the private sector.

Value was requested, value was given. That's what this particular thread is for. There are a number of other discussions in which we can debate the merits of the X-Type in general (X-type discussions) and New Yorkers (off-topic chatter).

The wife is tired of driving a stick in Boston traffic jams. I'd like to keep it as it's been bulletproof since new and I'm sure isn't worth much to someone else, particularly with the manual transmission. Interior is squeaky clean, exterior fair with some highway rash on hood. Two visits to body shop over lifetime, both cosmetic. Moonroof, HK sound, leather, heated seats. Silver/black. Any realistic chance of squeezing more than $4K out of it at trade-in? If not, she can keep on rowing it. ;)
  • j1mbo01j1mbo01 Member Posts: 13
I am not a car dealer, but I would put that one on Craigslist for 5k and see what you get. I bet you could sell it fairly quickly at that price, especially around the Boston Area. I might even want it for 4k! I'm in Somerville.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Snow in DC: the problem is we don't get enough that people here have experience driving in the snow, but we do get just enough so that those same people get themselves into trouble.

I usually have to go to work, also, my work rarely closes and I don't want to take a day off.

We've had a Subaru in our fleet for the past decade, and they've come in handy quite often.

I actually have come to like snow because it means no traffic! :D

$4k on a trade is gonna be tough.
    I like the Craigslist idea.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    X3 prices were running $2-3k below the X5 3.0's.

RX330 AWD's are running $25-26k at the sale.

    Durango anywhere from $10-12k.

It's amazing how fast Craigslist works. I got 5 calls in 1 hour after posting there. Try it.
  • sanjaysdcasanjaysdca Member Posts: 269
    I second that...

I sold my G20 in a day after listing on craig list...
The newspaper ad (The Union Tribune in SAn Diego) did not result in any serious calls)

It does work when a vehicle is offered at a fair price. 5 would be a give away price for the Saab in question, especially with its low mileage. I'd ask between 6.5 and 7 if I wanted it gone fast.
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
I too can attest to Craigslist as I sold my 99 CRV earlier this year in less than a week for the price that similar vehicles were going for on Autotrader.com. I think what drives the site is that it's FREE and is primarily used by individuals rather than dealers, which is what Autotrader has become.

cars.com is a bit better, more of a mix of the two (private party plus dealers). They pickup the local for sale ads from the Washington Post, but of course it's much easier to search on-line.

I've found AutoTrader is actually good for finding what new cars are in stock at some local dealers.

So they can be useful - in the right context.

My wife swears by craigslist, too.
  • mattandimattandi Member Posts: 588
That's funny. My wife swears at craigslist. Not that she's mad at it. Just expressions of surprise. :P

A lot of classifieds end up being humorous. Unintentionally.

For instance what some people consider "Excellent condition" is laughable.

I just test drove a 2005 bmw 545i and I liked it (big surprise eh)?

This one is non -cpo, 30K miles, white, loaded (sport+premium+cold+nav+premium audio). They're asking 31K I'd rate the condition as very clean, tires have less than 10K on 'em. ... what would be a reasonable offer?
