Not if his payoff is acurate.

man the miles REALLY kill you.

    $5-6,000 sounds right.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Didn't see the "S" sedan in Manheim, Saw an "I" sedan.

    Looks like $9-10,000
  • ccrheaumeccrheaume Member Posts: 2
Thank you so much for your input.
  • murphydogmurphydog Member Posts: 735
Thanks Volvomax - and interesting to see that.

The S version has the bigger engine and a few more standard and optional features. Wonder why Manheim would not have it?

Did they describe the 5 door hatchback any different? It only comes as an "S" version.

    Like new ..still smells new...lol

OK guys, now I am confused! Took the advice on another forum and got 3 separate appraisals on line. Just wondering which is the most accurate as Kelley seems way out of line.

KBB: $15.7K, rated as excellent too!
    NADA: $18.7K "clean"
    Black Book: $17,4K "clean"

NOTE: Car Max appraised at $16.5K 3 weeks ago, same as local Nissan dealer

    Thanks!

Hi, Just found this forum. My wife is thinking of a change and trading in her 2006 Sequoia SR5 with cloth interior. It's Black, 4WD, Tow package, moon roof, alloys. 28500 miles. Regularly serviced with most history. Condition is good except for a few scratches on wheel well and rear bumper. Tires about 50%. Mechanically no issues. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, missed the instructions. I'm close to Boston, MA. No prior damage / claims, bodywork, etc. Engine is I believe standard 4.7 V8.
    Thanks again....
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Well, you are a little upside down. Van's worth $26,000 on a trade.

Wow. I just priced identical new '08's and the EX-L + DVD, was at $27,500. Props to those that can sell these for more than new!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Manheim doesn't list the S until the 06 model yr.

KBB does list the S in 04. Difference over the i is about a grand.

    Thank you.
Ouch. So much for Toyotas holding their value.
Presumably this is because of economic conditions temporarily destroying the SUV and large truck market...will these trade-in prices start to climb again?
My financial situation has changed thanks to a remodel contractor who ripped my wife and I off, and I could really stand to get my monthly payments down (way down)...but that kind of trade-in value puts me upside-down by a long shot. Any advice?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
To me, it looks like KBB is the most accurate here.
Some cars went threu the factory sale in the mid $16's.
But cars always bring the most money in the Factory lane.
If you can get $16.5 take it.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Figure somewhere between $17-19,000
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
Thanks for the response! Fortunately, I'm not in the position of having to "trade in" this time........
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I don't know that trade in prices are ever gonna come back.
The whole truck and SUV market is in for some permanent shrinkage.

Maybe you can look into refinancing your truck for a longer term.
Although a lot of lenders are cracking down on how much they lend on these vehicles.
My best advice is to try and find other areas in your life where you can economize.
Look hard enough and I bet you can find a couple hundred dollars a month that you can save elsewhere.
  • carguy4362carguy4362 Member Posts: 3
Thanks for getting back to me......any idea how to counter the argument that KBB values the car at less than $15500. I'm sure there's been a discussion previously but KBB always seems lower than other sources yet some dealers insist on using it as their reference point (including the volvo dealer I recently e-mailed!) Can you let me know the approx. wholesale value of the car. Thanks again

Any value I quote is what I believe the wholesale value to be.
Now, KBB has come down a TON on SUV's, because over the past few months SUV have been trading way below KBB's pricepoints.
So, it's possible that KBB is more pessemistic than the market right now.

Dealers are going to be VERY cautious about trading for SUV's also.
This isn't a time to try and get top dollar for a truck or SUV.

Location: Traded in Philadelphia west suburbs
    Year/Make/Model: 1998 Lexus ES 300
    Body Style: 4 dr sedan
    Engine: 6 cyl, auto
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 108,000
    Color: Gray/gray
Major Options: sun roof, 6-disk CD changer, heated leather front seats, heated side mirrors, automatic seats w/ 2 driver memory, full size spare tire, vehicle alarm, safety
    Condition:
Interior in great condition -- some wearing on leather, but mostly near perfect. Exterior has some minor body damage on front bumper and "road rash" on hood. Otherwise in good condition.
    4 relatively new - 20% worn
Recently passed inspection w/ no issues
Only recommended maintenance required at this time is to change transmission fluid
    Other:
Was in one accident that resulted in the replacement of hood, left front quarter panel, and front bumper.

I know we got a good price on the vehicle we purchased. The trade in value I was offered initially was $4,000. I got them to come up to $5,000 and then took the offer. They currently have the vehicle listed on their site for $9,999 (which makes me laugh because when I told the sales guy I was sure they could sell it for $7,500 if they cleaned it up, he laughed and said they'd prob just dump it at auction.)

    Here it is

I'm happy with the trade in value. KBB said fair was $3600 and good was $4500. So, should I be happy? Or was I had?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
You certainly got all the money. Congrats.
  • newgsnewgs Member Posts: 29
    lizanneh,

Great job getting that trade-in value. What car did you get to replace it?

I have the same car exactly as yours, similar color even, at 99,500 miles. Looking at trading it in but a month ago, the radio, which sounds excellent still, suddenly just had its LCD display go blurry. Numbers are garbled and overlap some. This after the check engine light showed up recently. I was so bummed out that getting it fixed might cost so much and not worth doing at all. If I do not get it fixed though, it would significantly reduced its trade-in value.

Have you experienced this with your car? Thanks. BM

'...any idea how to counter the argument that KBB values the car less..."

You can always use the line a Chrysler salesman gave me when I quoted book values some years ago:

"Those books don't keep up with used car values. 5 year old Chryslers have been going UP in value lately"

If you can keep a straight face this might work.

Take it to Autozone, Pep Boys, or the like and have them read the trouble code - they'll do it for free. It may well be nothing more than an oxygen sensor. Regardless, as you say, a CEL can significantly impair a car's value.

Your car is a perfect craigslist candidate and will instantly bring more than any dealer will give you on trade.

We purchased a new Honda Odyssey. We actually had a second trade-in as well -- my husband's SUV. But I was going to post that separately.

As for your Lexus, I did not have a problem with the radio display. The last time my check engine light came on, I took it in and it was the air fuel filter or something like that. An expensive fix, in my opinion. It could be something as simple as a loose gas cap, though. I'd take the recommendation of the other poster and take it somewhere where they will read the code for a small cost and then decide what to do.

Good luck with your vehicle. Honestly, you can prob get another 100,000 miles out of it. It was just time for us to switch to a minivan so we could downsize from a 3 car household to a 2 car household, and the SUV and my Lexus were the casualties. My car still looked great and drove well (although not as sound proof as when I first got it, it was still better than a new Ford). I'm sure someone will buy it and be very happy with it for another 5-10 years.

A co-worker here in Columbus, OH, is considering a new Toyota SUV to replace her

    2003 Toyota Highlander Limited
    V-6 AWD
    27,000 miles
    Gold exterior/Tan leather
Loaded with all (or near all) options
Brand new tires/all service up to date
Straight up vehicle with some very minor body damage that will be about $500 to repair.

What number will the local Toyota store set for it on trade?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Somewhere @ $20,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Low miles helps. What kind of body damage?
If it is nothing serious, could be as much as $14,000

i realize that perception is reality, which means people are willing to pay more for a lexus than some other brands, but they expensive to maintain, never mind if something goes wrong (then you really pay). i guess it is because they are quieter than a ford. ;)

Oh, it's some blowback damage from someone who broke into a car parked next to it that created small denting and paint chips in front of and above the driver's door handle.

Thanks much for the number - checked three online price guides and they were all over the place on it - ranging from mid-10s (kbb) to 15 (nada) for a trade - an amazing spread really.

    Silver/Ash
    power moonroof
    all service records available

Not true, unless you're foolish enough to go back to your Lexus dealer for post-warranty service.

Having kept both a Ford Taurus & a Lexus ES 300 long after their respective warranties expired, I can assure you that the Ford took a much larger chunk of my income.

    cccompson,

I have heard about Autozone before for a quick read of the trouble code but did not mind much about it. I plan to do that now and hope to see what the problem is.
I also am looking for an auto mechanic to repair my radio lcd problem. Hope this will not cost me much.

    Thanks for your advise.
  • newgsnewgs Member Posts: 29
Thanks for the info. Yes, I am thinking twice now about trading in if I do not get a fair value for my car. I would settle for the amount you got for yours though. I will see when I get the chance to deal.

Excellent choice on your van... can't go wrong with the Honda. That will last you a very long time. We were looking at a bigger one too for this 2nd vehicle.. a highlander or a CX 7. Leaning towards the Toy for reliability but will decide after the test drive... heard some good things about the CX. Have a good one.

LOL, WOW, 15.5K? I was thinking 14K is really high already for a 3 years old car when people can get a new '09 for 18K.
  • sanjaysdcasanjaysdca Member Posts: 269
    very true...
Cars direct is selling new 09 LE for 18000 including destinantion in LA area.
With some negotiations I think one can pickup new 09 for 17K

So 15.5 is way TOO high
