Any thoughts on what I should be paying for a 2005 G35x with 38,000 miles in Pittsburgh, PA. It is an auto with premium sound and moonroof. The color is white. Dealer has it stickered for 18,900. How much do I have to play with?
Edmunds is pretty close. Can be anywhere from the high $13's to low $14's.
Thx Volvomax, much appreciated. Hmmm, I'm only a little bit upside down, maybe that Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi Orange isn't so out of reach after all.
I know I know, I should wait. But when I was a young lad, that was the first car I tried out when I was car searching with my dad. I fell in love with it, but my dad's fatherly wisdom was right. I probably wouldn't be here right now if I bought one back then.
Condition: As near perfect as you can get, inside and out, EXCEPT, the right mirror needs replaced (you know who did this so I ain’t going down over this. ). About 2 years ago the dealer price to replace it was $264. I would have had it replaced then but I thought the other driver needed more practice backing out of the garage so I waited. So now you know the tale about this.
Tires: Front: brand new, (just replaced today). Rear: 12,800 miles will need replaced in about 5K miles.
Over the phone I’ve been offered $9,400 max if dealer agrees it is as good as I say (yes, I told them about the mirror).
So, what do you experts think about the offer? I think $9,600?
Thanks,
jmonroe

This is the kind of car that normally isn't driven aggressively.
That’s what I was thinking also. So I’m going to blame this on Mrs. jmonroe. She must have been taking her beauty to the track without my knowledge while I’ve been working so I could pay for her habit. :surprise:
Seriously, I was a little at fault here. They were worn on the edges because of under inflation. The center was just OK, would have passed PA state inspection but just barely. All the tire shops said that the front end seemed to be OK alignment wise. They were OEM Michelin’s and each of the five tire stores I went to said, “that’s about what you should expect from OEM tires”!! Although I’ve heard that before when I bought tires for my 05’ Hyundai XG 350 at the end of 07’. They lasted 22,000 miles, still not good but better. So, I think this is probably a standard line that tire shops pass out when you go in to buy replacement tires. One tire shop said, “if you had a Cobalt, you’d have been in here at 8,500 miles”.

I think you have identified the culprit. Underinflation is the #1 tire killer. IIt takes a sharp eye to tell when a radial tire is underinflated unless it is half-flat. I try to keep checking mine with a tire guage, but in our Canadian winters, it is a good day if you can keep your "brass ones" from freezing off....so a regular tire pressure check just may not get done.
Underinflation is the #1 tire killer. IIt takes a sharp eye to tell when a radial tire is underinflated unless it is half-flat. I try to keep checking mine with a tire guage...
I used to be really good at checking the pressure. Used to do it almost every Saturday morning. Not so much anymore. I think I'm going to return to my old ways though. I learned my lesson. Those two tires cost me $300 OTH and the worst part is, I probably won't have that car in two weeks.
My Son was at the junk yard two days ago getting rims for his car so he could swap tires to take it to a 12 turn track in a few weeks. So he calls and says, "they have 2 used tires here for $50 for your car (225 x 50 x 17), would you be interested. The guy can bring them over so I can look at them"? I said, "yeah, take a look at them and if they are OK get them"! Guess what? They weren't. They were the reverse of the ones I had. They suffered from over inflation. Is there a way to weld those things together? :confuse:
I thought for a minute there I could save a buck. Yeah, right.

Condition is very important for a Miata - it's a sign that the car may have been neglected in other ways, also.
When I sold mine I washed it just before each time I showed it to a potential buyer.
I ended up getting $2700 for a 1993 C package with 78k miles, but it needed shocks and the top I replaced about 5 years ago had a couple of small cracks, so it's got 2-3 years left in it at most, which is surprising for a Robbins top. I did patch the cracks with automotive epoxy and showed the flaws to the buyer.
I figured I wasn't going to install another top myself again, too much work, so that's $1100 for the top. The shocks installed would push that bill total up to $2000. That was more than I was willing to spend, plus I had my eye on a power retractable hardtop.
Used PRHT models go fast. Ignore blue book, they're gone the day they're put for sale. I had my eye on 2 of them and one warm weekend and both sold. Soft tops are a dime a dozen.
I figure that will help me on resale, if I ever sell it.
You must have a bead on that new Genesis. $9400. for your Sonata sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Wait and see what VM has to say and then go for it.
I think you are all over it at $9400. If you can get another couple hundred great.
Thanks for the reply VM. I'll try to get a little more. Afterall, we've learned if you don't ask you don't get. You car biz guys taught us that.
It's a great car and when I told Mrs. jmonroe if we bought another car I would be trading in her Sonata. She said, "why, if you want a car and that car is for you, why don't you trade your car I like my car just fine"? You have to know her (how could you, I don't :confuse: ) but what she means is she doesn't want to get used to another car.
That Sonata is a very nice, very clean car but it's the one that will go if I can make the deal I want on the Genesis.
It's not like my car (05' XG 350) is a piece of crap, you know.

It is important not to let little details like that get in your way. The upside is that this type of person cares so little that once the new car is there, they won't worry about it anymore. Trust me on this ;->
I would strongly suggest you try putting the car on craigslist for private sale for $10,900... if there's any interest at all, you should come to an agreement.. it'll be good for you ($1k extra) and the new owner will get one heck of a deal. Maybe sales tax rules in your state will mess it up, but I'd try it.

Funny to see the differences in prices. 1st gen. Miata prices are higher in the NW. I think mainly because of more limited availability. They're a dime a dozen in CA.
I think I'm going to hold onto mine for a while. Going to upgrade the brakes. Maybe even paint it at some point.
I have a confession to make. I was wrong when I said $9,400, I must have been thinking that’s what I WANTED because when I looked at my notes, there it was as plain as my hand writing would allow, $9,000 even was the dealers offer. That car was worth way more than that and when I got to the dealer, we did some talking. Not much but enough.

I have also added a cold-air intake, sport exhaust, 18" alloy wheels, HID headlamps, LED tail lamps, and some other things to the car. All the mods are Mazdaspeed accessories and not aftermarket. I know they don't add value though.
I am wondering what this car is worth in Baltimore, MD 21229. Also, will it make a difference if I cancel the extended warranty before I trade the car and get my money back for it? It's a Mazda ESP warranty, not an aftermarket one.

So,cancel the warranty if you trade the car. You don't have to do it beforehand.
Sadly, 60k is a TON of miles in just 3 yrs. Also, your mods don't add any value.
I think the car is a $6-8,000 car.
