A friend is looking to trade into a new 2002 Max and has this:

    1996 Maxima GLE
    white on tan leather
    100K miles
    all the typical GLE goodies
roof, in dash CD, almost new Michelins
Pretty good condition - seen suburban care
    In Atlanta

    Numbers please?

    Thank you much.

    ......How are ya ..?

It's the right color, for all those Georgia Peaches ....

But, the miles are Just to high ...so he get's no help there --- if it's nice and clean, this vehicle will do in and around ... $3,500++ .. maybe more. People are not afraid of high mileage Maxima's if they are clean ..

    I hope this helps ...

I thought that post was rather humorous myself Terry.

allroy: Funny that you have a blue Jetta with black leather when I asked the dealer about that combo they laughed and said that noone would be able to find that color combo.
  • allroyallroy Member Posts: 58
black01coupev6: That was all the dealer I got it from had! :P

I had another question for all of you and I am sorry of it is inapproporiate for this thread: what would lose value quicker (in 3-5 years on a trade in) a 2002 Explorer a XLT, Limited, or an EB? (all 4x4, all V8)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... You know I like to kid around a lot ...
I wasn't picking on the vehicle ... actually, the vehicle would be worth about $5/$6/$800 more up north, because of the color... go figure..

    XLT... in that order..

    Terry.

...... These are quirky little vehicles..

Even in the day of the new "Super" vans .. this little dude still has some value (dual air ..right ..?) ....IF, it's clean.. all the service records ..TURBO checks out, tires are newish -- looks like a 99 ...

You could see an easy $5,000+ on the wholesale side... "maybe" more ... that's a maybe. On the retail side, $7,500..

    I hope this helps ...

    Terry.

Thanks for the price on the Previa.........

They may be quirky but I still believe they are the best van around as far as versatility....

My old 1993 has 202,000 miles & its still running strong.

I'd like to sell the Supercharged one because a new supercharger is close to $3K parts price at a dealer....I had the s/c serviced but I'm still concerned about it...

  • allroyallroy Member Posts: 58
No problem! I just cant believe that a dealer told someone they didnt exist! :P

Thanks for the info on the Explorer, it definately helped me to decide which one to get!
  • black01coupev6black01coupev6 Member Posts: 195
tompo: My fiance loves the Previa. He thinks they are the coolest thing. We even went on a hunt for a pearl white one with dual roofs and cloth not too long ago and we don't have any little ones. He loves the way the middle seats swivel towards each other.

allroy: I knew the dealer was full of it because their website listed it as a color combo. He also told me that they don't discount VW's because they are a premium brand. They were quoting me more on a lease for a Jetta than I was getting for an Accord EX V6.

He then went on to trash the V6 Accord and the Accord that I was thinking about trading. I was trading a 1999 Accord EX 5-speed champagne over ivory cloth. It had a little over 30k on it at that time (early 2000). And the car was IMMACULATE. I am very anal about my cars so the tires were rotated every 5k, syntec oil changes, plat +4 spark plugs at 30k, dealer service at 30k, and not one stain or scuff inside and only 2 light chips on the hood where some idiot threw a bottle out of it. He said the car needed *work*. When I asked him what kind of work he just got a blank look.

    Youre buried. $20K methinks..

Guess my payoff or burial depth and win a prize.

    A few hints:

    I'm 12 months into a 36 month lease.
Car stickered at $40K - got it for invoice.
    Interest rate below 1%
    Resid 50%+

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... That's why I said they are a little quirky ----- Can they run for a long time...? --- Oh Yeah, no doubt..!

But, when that Supercharger goes Bye Bye .... so does a month of take home pay ...! ---- Then the vehicle is worth about Zippity do Dah ....... I think you just answered your own question ...

    Another Orlandoan!

EVen so, This is sorta like shooting blind..

July? God only knows. Right now the car si worth about $10,500 wholesale.. $12,500-13K retail..

So figure.. 6 months? I have nooo idea.

I'd guesstimate that $9,800 will be a tad higher than what the car will be worth wholesale at that time, but still a great buy retail.

To be fair, check back in May or so though.

I had already typed $31,000 and then I figured it couldn't be THAT bad so I backed down to $28,000. Like they say, always go with your first instinct.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
it's that bad. Not like I want or need to unload it; I'm always curious though.

I'll send you some (cheap) goodies I got at SEMA if you'd like. E-mail your address.

In case you're wondering, Bill gets a picture of me sweeping the garage.

I gotta jump in to say do not buy any Explorer period. They drop like a stone in the harbor. The Firestone/rollover controversy has killed them.Think about it,0% financing, selling at or below invoice,30,000+ used units coming off lease each month, your 10 grand tanked before the ink is dry.We recently traded in a 2000 Explorer XLT 2x4,full leather,cd changer,22,000 miles for quess what? $11,500 We even called the dealer where it was purchased and they wouldn't even pay that. They didn't want there own product back. Why did our customer take it?Because he new it would only get worse and he couldn't take time to retail it himself. That's real world trade in values.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Sounds like someone got ripped on this deal ...

    A 2wd 2000 XLT with 22 klicks, with all the toys ...for $11,500 ...?

Unless this vehicle has been smacked .. the paint is burned off and the interior was Nuked .. that's the only way it's worth $11,500

I'm not sure what part of the country you are from ..... but, if it's nice, I will strike you a reader for it --- and run it through the Metro auction and get $13,000+..

Your numbers are not "real" .. or from this "world" ....l...o...l...

Now should be a great time to buy a used Exploder. Look at all the off-leases and trade-in's out there. Gotta be some great deals out there.

BTW, I heard from a GSM here in ATL that he took in a black AWD Exploder ('99 I think, maybe 2000) for $13,500. Leather, CD, new tires, 15K miles. I about dootyed when I heard that. That musta been a $30K truck new. I wished I had a spare $13.5 lying around cuz I woulda like to have that truck, Exploder or not.
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
I haven't found a replacement yet, but I'm glad I sold my Explorer when I did earlier this year. This was right after the new model came out. It was a '97 XLT, no leather or sunroof, but everything else, excellent condition, 36k miles. Dealer said $11k, I sold it for $15k, and it only took me three weeks. :-) It pays to take good care of your cars, avoid dings, etc. I also just sold a '91 Accord LX with 209k miles to a co-worker (the same one who bought my '88 Accord in '96) for $2500.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ....... Quite bragging ...! ---- l...o...l...

    Terry.
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
Well, I was going to say I didn't mean to brag, but maybe I did a little. :-) I'm just surprised at how much the value of even 1-2 year old Explorers has dropped. I'm really kicking myself, because I had a buyer a year ago for around $20.5k, but I wasn't ready to sell it then...so for 8-9 months of use, I gave up $5500. :-( Of course if they'd bought it, they'd really be kicking themselves now....
  • allroyallroy Member Posts: 58
So do you think the 2002 Explorer will have the low resale value?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Umm...

    YES

Look at a Highlander, RX300. If you need to go off-road, hmm.. 4Runner I suppose.

I posted a similar question on the Inconsiderate Buyers Forum trying to gain some understanding as I am trying to buy a new car using a trade in, but was referred here for an answer.

After doing much research, and visiting dealerships, there's a huge disparity between what the pricing guides say and what the dealerships offer. I understand regional differences, and a couple of the guides do take that into consideration. I also understand that condition can be subjective, and I think I've been as impartial as I can when selecting my car's condition. When getting prices I also only considered the "wholesale" or "trade in" values offered by the sites.

But after getting prices from five different sources, why is the difference in price being offered by dealerships so different?

I have prices ranging from from $5785 to $9755. This is from Edmunds, Kelly Blue Book, Black Book, NADA and Car Prices. All were obtained using zip codes if applicable, and using good or clean for condition.

I've been to two dealers, and have been offered $3840 and $3100.

What am I missing? It's a 1997 Ford Probe GT, all options with 71K and always dealer maintained with records.

    Thanks
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
are the price 'guides.' That said, there's probably not much demand for Probes (especially right before winter) on used car lots. That said, there are people looking for them somewhere, maybe put it in the paper for $? (figure to be suggested by Terry or Bill, hopefully).........
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ Guides, are just that .....Guides.

It's a source of information to give you an idea, hopefully a good idea of what your vehicle "may" be worth , and you have to keep an open mind along with ..

But remember .. everyone has a "Clean, nice, well maintained, hi way mile only vehicle ---- I have seen thousands of them ..

The rub is -- all people think their vehicle is nicer and cleaner, than the last one .. the unfortunate thing is, there not.

They have scratches on the front and rear fascias (that have to be re painted, to sell well) tires don't match, or they are all worn bad. The $200 dent on the trunk ..that you promised to fix 2 yrs ago, still sit's there, and now it's starting to rust ... the burn holes from Uncle Ron in the back seat, the coffee and Coke stains, in all the carpeting from road trips and the kids ---- all the oil mess in the trunk, from when you got gas for the lawn mower .. the 10 inch scrape on the roof, for when you had used the family sedan for a 4 wheeler ...... etc, etc, etc.

Now in most peoples mind ... that vehicle only needs a car wash.. and a couple of touch ups --- but the reality is, it needs $4/500 of paint work.. new tires, interior work, a service and a $125 detail job ..plus someone to explain away, those 50k miles on a 2 1/2 yr old vehicle -- so when it's done, the dealer, or yourself has just spent $1,000 on this "perfect" vehicle .. just to make it where it should be- average.

That why these information sources are called -- Guides --

But now that I have bored you into a stupor, your Probe GT is worth in and around $3,5/$4,000 depending on the condition, maybe .. and on the retail end, it might be worth in the $5's. There is a lot of Ford Probes out there, the miles are a little stiff, to say the least --- and Probes aren't the most popular right now ( nothing personal ) ... It's - 2drs as a whole, even Toyota, Acura and others are all over the place.....Sorry.

    Terry.

....... I just wanted to be a little clearer on this, before a "Explorer" Vendetta started...

All SUV's ... Chevy, GMC, Lincoln, Mercury, Nissan, Suziki, Land Rover, Dodge, Jeep ... etc, etc.com --- are not holding as much re-sale as they did 2 yrs ago --- Why should they ..? -- Everyone want's one..or.. has one ... The market is huge, and will get bigger --

But, like anything else --- If everyone likes "Apple pies" ... and wants Apple pies right now, that market for Apple pies will double it's own market ...

So it get's down to to one basic thing ... Are they going away tomorrow ...No! -- Are they going to be here for a long time ..Yes! --- Will some depreciate more than others..Yes..! -- Does anybody really know which one's ...No ..! --

So, Like I always say --- Buy, and drive what you like ..

    Terry.

Guys, drove a 2000 740iL; 33,000 miles, silver/ black, premium sound, rear elec. shade, NAV, & phone. (Non-BMW) dealer asking $43,900, so no CPO warranty extension included. IMO, what a machine! How is the price; I know miles are high.

They were talking about giving me mid-upper 20's for my '98 RR 4.6, about what you all were saying here.

Anyone have an opinion or guess on whether a 1 or 2 year old 7 Series, or a new X5, might have better resale in a few years?

Bill: I agree with your affection for Rovers. How well do you like them once the warranty runs out tho? I've heard all the horror stories, & a lot of even the most die-hard Rover buffs seem really into extended warranties. And I'm thinking mine may be really hard to sell once the warranty runs out.......(or get into expensive repairs).

    Thanks! Steve
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Ok, let's see if I'm reading this one right ..l..o..l..

    It's a 2000 740iL .. with 33k, right ..? -- For $43,900.

The price is right .. that's for sure... It's got the shade and the Nav, and it's the "Right" color.

Have the Vehicle checked out -- close--... it's a little on the cheap side, miles are a little steep -- but fine, if the vehicle checks out all the way around, I would be all over this puppy .. Ya can't find em' that cheap at any auctions that's for sure...

And if they are dropping the mid 20's for the Rover ---- I would be so far gone in the 740iL...

The 740iL's do just fine as far as re-sale ... I have driven the 4.4 X5's for over a year now, and there nice --- and they will hold their value quite well ( that's because there isn't a super amount yet ) -- I don't feel in the future, the 3.0's will do super well ... But, have this 7 looked at ...

Family circumstances are putting me into a Mini-Van hunt. (2nd child on the way).

I am thinking about selling my second car, and would like to know what I can expect to get for it.

    Texas car
49.9k miles, two weeks remaining til fact. warranty expires.
Silver metallic w/ sport package(& grey leather interior)
    moonroof
    5 speed manual trans
    good tread on tires remaining
    17x8 alloys scuffed up
added M5 style front bumper & foglights
plus the usual wear/tear from a couple of kids of mine...

in addition, re: extended warranty coverage, should I consider getting one while car's still under warranty in order to make the sale more appealing? It'll cost me about $1500. Is this too risky of an investment ? I know I won't benefit from the xtend warr, but not sure if selling w/out warranty is going to be ok, considering the dealers' CPO units I'd be competing with...

.......... Hi Jedd, how are you ...?

I used to see you on TV all the time --- How's Miss Ellie doing ..? She's a hotty ...l...o...l..

For starters ... don't get too involved in the warranty stuff ... If they feel they want..or need a warranty, let them do a little research around Edmunds ... and they will save a little $$ on their own --- Kinda remember, when they are at a dealers lot they will pay dearly for it, plus all the other stuff -- you have the advantage here ...

Ok, it's got lot's of miles for the year ... that's Show Biz, make sure you have all the records handy ....

Have the vehicle "detailed" have it look like a diamond -- maybe make a visit to the Dent Dr. and spend a buck or two there ... Use a "5 liner Ad" in the biggest newspaper in your area...

The killer on this vehicle is the "handshaker" -- a little tough to move ..(don't mention that in the Ad) So yours has to look better than the rest ...

It may be worth in and around the low side of $22 (real money) maybe.. --- IF, it's a baby doll .. --- and on the retail side try her out at $24,950 and see what happens ....

    Good Luck ...

    Hi Terry/Brentwood,

I'm looking for a RWTIV on my CR-V coming off lease in SF Bay area.

It's a '99 CR-V EX 4WD auto, 34K miles, dark green with CD and roof rack, clean interior, average-to-good exterior condition (no paint work but has a scratch here and there).

I'm considering buying it at lease end next month, just curious if I'd be upside-down if I do so.

    Thanks in advance,

    Trivia time.

I sold my '86 Subaru GL 4wd wagon. Almost 90k HARD, HARD, HARD miles - 1st and 2nd gear around town, short trips on a cold engine, and heavily loaded trips at high speeds(for this car) to drive it on the beach to surf fish.

The am/fm radio worked most of the time, the front left strut had a half-inch or so sag(dealer said it was good), a few rust spots down low and a big stain on the shotgun seat(IOW, front passenger)from an exploding can of FixAFlat.

AC was cold, the 5speed had a low range and the car was full of sand and salt spray from years of driving it on the beach. ALL fasteners and electrical connections were pretty well corroded and the plugs hadn't been removed in, oh, say 4 or 5 years. Ran good and good gas mileage.

Oh, and the front sub-frame members were rusted almost through. It would have passed the VA inspection except for this.

And it still had the ORIGINAL FRONT BRAKE PADS. No lie. Honest.

Now the question. Having gotten every bit of my money's worth out of it, what was it worth in a private sale?

    John
