Wow, I bet the price will hit "new GTI" territory before it's over.

62k miles, automatic, looks decent in pics but I haven't kicked the tires or run a carfax yet. Doesn't look to have premium or sport package...just a basic X3.

Non-dealer late-model used type lot...non-cpo...might be the dumbest idea I've had but this is about the perfect vehicle for my commute and I can't justify tearing up a new one. I drive 60 miles a day out very twisty/hilly roads with snow and ice thrown in several months a year (yes I'll put snow tires on it). They're asking $20k and have had it for a couple months. Curious what they might have in it. Also, whattya think this things worth in three years with 120k fairly hard miles? Curious if I should spend more on a lower mileage CPO. I've had BMW, Audi, VW in the past and can do a lot of the work myself if I'm in the mood. About an hour to the nearest dealer for anything outside the domestic brands.

I will better try to sell via auction...

    Thanks for your reply volvomax

Punch in 20-23k for x3 cpo in the car search sites[cars.com-autotrader] 32 listings nationwide.A few in Ohio[ dave walter bmw] that look better than the one you posted. Might give you a perspective on this deal. If you are ready to deal you might do even better with a cpo - less miles for a few grand more. Prices are negotiable on cpo x3's so get tough and do some work. Might shave a grand off the listed price. Good luck.

Have you driven one? They're famously rough riding, don't know if I'd want to commute 120 miles a day in one from what I've heard.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Yes, and I didn't really think it was that bad particularly for the type of driving I do. Of course, I used to race and tend to set my vehicles up for handling anyway. I have stiffer shocks and sway bars on my Tundra and it actually handles better than a lot of cars. First think I do when I get in my wife's GX470 is turn the suspension mode all the way to sport....which is still way too soft and floppy for me:P

For that kind of duty, @ $20K-ish, I'd probably pick a recent lower mileage 4runner, with a warranty, even CPO, & trade off the handling of the bmw for (probably) more reliability, no problems. The snow/ice/twisty long commute in a bmw w/no warranty & 60K, I dunno, but that's just me.

Lots of negative comments on the X3 here lately, usually about the harsh ride, but I wonder how much of that is due to the Run-flats?

The negative comments I've seen are mostly from the same person.

I'd consider a Honda Pilot in addition the 4runner, it's based on a car platform, and you can get a 2006-07 model for well under $20k.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Crazy.

Problem is - you can't drive it. Once you put miles on it, you cut the value by half, maybe even 3/4ths.

Is it museum worthy? Collectible? I dunno, that seems like a stretch. It may be the original hot hatch but people bought 'em to drive 'em, not look at 'em.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Well, if I wanted to trade-off handling I would just keep driving what I've got....it does as well or better than a 4runner or Pilot. I would go with an AWD car like a 330xi or even a Fusion sport but the occassional deer carcass or potential head-on with a pickup (or worse) doesn't give me a gooey feeling about a low-rider. I rank my needs in this order.....Ground clearance, handling, winter traction, passing power, reliability, value (long-term cost). Even a low mileage CPO X3 at 26k isn't a bad deal compared to new prices so I wouldn't feel as bad torturing it. But is 30k miles and a warranty really worth $6k-7k or better if I can get them down on the price of this one. Really, my biggest concern with the bimmer is i'm an hour from a dealer, but that pretty much goes for everyone but Honda/Dodge/GM/Ford.... The Ford Edge doesn't handle too bad come to think of it. Might be able to stiffen it up a bit.
  • delthekingdeltheking Member Posts: 1,152
I think an 06-07 Jeep Liberty would be a good choice-massive depreciation ,so a used one is not expensive and can be a bargain ,good clearance, very good in snow and ice, decent reliability as per CR and not expensive to repair as it does not have any hi fi technology.
    Just MHO.

    X3s don't come with runflats...

If you are used to a 3-series, then the X3 really isn't rough riding... It is a typical sporty feel (at least to me..)..

If you are used to a Lexus RX or an Explorer, then it will feel like an oxcart.. :surprise:

We happen to like the ride... and, the way you feel connected to the road.. :)

You missed my number two priority....handling. The Liberty is horrendous in that category. I like to drive fast if you haven't caught on.

The dealers here spam craigslist. I also confirmed it was a dealer by reverse searching the phone #. It's a Mazda dealership, not a guy on the corner. They want 7,999. Told me on the phone that KBB said that was what it was worth. Hello, if I know how to get to use the net and price the car.

    KBB.com says 5,750 Edmunds.com says a little over 5,000

This is still the right place. Just take the trade-in value and add to it. Anywhere from $1500 for a good deal to $2500 fora slightly less than fair deal.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

  • 2kids3cats2kids3cats Member Posts: 10
KBB says it's trade in is 2,925 and retail from a dealer is 5,750.
Edmunds trade in is 2,898 and retail at 5,006

    It has automatic transmission

    Thanks.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
....is it a stick or automatic (if it's a stick, I'll be down to pick it up in a jiff). ;) Either way, it's a '99, as in ten years old. $7999 is just nuts....it's not like it has a warranty; with the low miles, maybe somewhere in the $4-5 range, but I think even $5 is a lil crazy.
  • houstonricehoustonrice Member Posts: 11
    Hi All,
As a graduate student with some money but not too much, I am looking for a manual transmission car which has a good balance of fun to drive and gas mileage.
    I looked at these two:

Civic Si 02 ep3 hatch. Silver with black tint. Good condition, unmodified. 75000 miles.
kbb trade in 5600, private party 7100 $. Houston, Texas.
    Real private party should be?

Mazda 3s 2004 manual. 51000 miles. Leather, Sunroof. All options.
kbb 9900 private party. Houston, Texas.
    Real private party?

Also; I know that the 02 civic si has the CEL on, and Autozone gave 1166 and 1167 codes---O2 sensor. Small dent on the lower back side.
Worry about the Si---Shall have to replace clutch or tranny later, because they have had that history. Gear issues reported. Drive was smooth and gears were good. Just a little wee bit rough.

Worry about the Mazda 3---car had back left strut broken, and front right strut leaking. I know that the struts are made by ford, and I wanted to buy the car and get them replaced by good aftermarket struts.

Or should I chuck both of these expensive buggers and go for a 3000-4500 Civic beater car, which I can putt- putt around Houston rather than burn 59 up? ;)
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
.....it sounds, if you're being honest with yourself, that maybe performance and a certain 'coolness' factor are equally important as gas mileage or saving money, perhaps? Understandable if that's the case, just giving you a hard time. ;)

For both, you could also consider a Mazda Protege or Protege5....you should be able to pick up a decent one ('01-03) for maybe around $4-6k, I think, with no problem. Should be a fairly good selection of manuals out there. Mazda 3 (s in particular) aren't exactly frugal with gas, compare to other compacts.

I don't know how you feel about Ford Focuses or Nissan Sentras, but quite a few should fit the bill, too....?

The thing about Civics...as you know, their theft rate and insurance premiums are both high. Don't know where you'll be keeping this thing at night (or at school) but that's something to consider.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Agree that $8 grand is insanity, it's been discountinued ... a long time ago, for crying out loud.

I think that and I like the Protoge!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I wouldn't assume a new O2 sensor will fix that Civic. The O2 sensor is just measuring the presence of oxygen downstream of the engine, and that could be caused by any or all sorts of fuel or spark/electrical problems.

Could be spark plug, plug wires, ignition coil, electrical, fuel pump, fuel filter, who knows.

I doubt a $70 oxygen sensor will be a permanent fix.
  • sanjaysdcasanjaysdca Member Posts: 269
    I second that...
I had a similar code (Malfunctioning O2 sensor) it ended up a $1400 fix on my I30
    Two O2 sensor
    Pre Cat
    Ignition coils + Spark plugs

Last two were probably my fault as I ignored the light for too long...

So be careful with CEL light
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
On my Subaru it was an $80 ignition coil. I went ahead and also changed the plugs and wires.

On my wife's Mazda 626, it was a mess. She went to a dealer and they charged a fortune for the O2 sensor, which didn't fix it.

Long story short, it was a torn axle boot! The grease from it spilled out gradually and short-circuited the oxygen sensor.

In both cases, a symptom, but not the actual problem.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
    X3s don't come with runflats...

Ah hah! The bmwusa site lists runflats on all the models w/runflats, & just lists the tire size on models w/o runflats. (From all the bitching about runflats on current bmws, I guess I assumed they all had them now).

The X3's seem pretty reliable, right? A nice '06 w/60K miles, at enough savings over a lower mileage CPO one, is not the dumbest idea I've ever heard.......esp. to mile it up; the warranty will be gone soon enough anyway.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
I put a set of bilstein shocks on my 03 liberty and the handling improved 200%. I like to think of it as my midget ml 350 with a 30k cd in the bank and $19.95 oil changes. By the way sebring, did you check out any of those cpo x3's in Ohio that I posted for you?
  • 2kids3cats2kids3cats Member Posts: 10
My husband now doesn't want it to look at it. The lady that is trading it in was waiting on her car which is coming from an Ohio dealership. Then they want to service it before putting it on the lot. So, we couldn't see it until tomorrow.

He says if they want THAT much above kbb value then they probably won't come down to kbb or edmunds value.

Now the salesman is telling me it is an LX not an ES. But he said it had 1.8L engine that comes only on the ES. The kbb and edmunds values for the LX are lower than the ES.

  • 2kids3cats2kids3cats Member Posts: 10
why? I figure all they can say is "no" if I offer book value on the car. And I can say "see ya". ;)

Thanks for everyone's help BTW. :D
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If you mean KBB values, even those tend to be too high.

It's a nice car, just find some that aren't priced like recent gold values.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Well 200% improvement on the Liberty is a good start :P I've been all over the autotraders and cars.com listings, I was just hoping to hear a real auction value for one with that many miles. Volvomax seems to be awol though and it doesn't matter anyway as the one I was considering sold. I have my Tundra setup to handle pretty good (Bilstein HD's, heavier sway bars, good tires) and the more of these cross-overs I look at and drive, I'm not sure they bring anything to the table beyond a couple extra mpg.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
Did I post 200% better ? Meant to say 210% better -- that's max for the liberty- haven't tried to maneuver at high speeds -- right leg is too short to push the pedal to the floor. And I won't duct tape a brick to my Hush Puppies so no suggestions along those lines.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Car is probably $3-3500 wholesale. Figure $5k retail.
$8000 for a 10 yr old Mazda is a little nuts.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
325 is probably a $10-11,000 car wholesale. Figure low teens retail

    330 is probably a $12,000 car wholesale. Retail @ $15k
  • fordfoolfordfool Member Posts: 240
You will want to see a CarFax on that Protege to verify the mileage and to have the car inspected by a good, independent mechanic. An inspection of brake pedal and driver's seat wear as well as the tires and brakes can be useful in verifying low mileage.

A vehicle identification number (VIN) decoder will give the trim level of the Protege.

Yeah.... if it's a commuter... I'd go higher miles, no warranty.... and much less money...

I like the X3.... they sold a ton of them, because they put a lot of lease support behind them.. Now that they don't do that, you rarely see a new one..

You also have a windshield wiper de-icer.

Private party sell that bad boy and make sure to list the features (alloys, stability control, etc.), because those are well equipped.

Guys, thank you so much for the replies. THank you for the suggestion of the protege and protege5, excellent cars both of them.

I was also looking at this car: 2005 Honda Civic 2 door coupe, Value Package, with 85000 miles on it. Kbbs are 6900 excellent and 6300 good condition private party. No issues with the car itself.

What do you recommend my final offer on this car be? I'm located in Houston.

X3s used to have 76% residuals for 24 month leases combined with very low money factors gave you crazy lease deals.

I still think they ride to rough, and I had a MINI Cooper S with coilovers so I don't mind a rough ride, and the step in over the door sill is ridiculous.
