    Anyway, need a trade in value for a friend (totally clueless, so easily clubbed).

    2002 CRV EX, all wheel drive. Blue over gray cloth. Moonroof, CD changer (that apparantly doesn't want to spit out the CDs at the moment). AT.

    116K on the clock. Good tires, just had some expensive work (O2 sensors, new cat converter, rear brakes including 1 new caliper).

    some body dings and nicks (it goes into NYC every day), interior is fine (single owner, no kids helps a lot with this!). No accidents that I am aware of. Would probably clean up OK.

    No interest in a private sale, and likely to go to a Honda dealer on trade for a new civic.

    In the northern burbs of NYC.

    I'd fix that CD changer. Right now the condition may qualify as "beater" and it's way too new for that (despite the high miles).

    Try disconnecting the battery, reset it, see if that works. He/she has nothing to lose...

    In good condition, the Private Party Value should be about $7000, give or take $200-$300. Trade-In Value is in the $5300-$5800 range.

    It's very unusual for an LS 2003 Impala to have a 3.8 motor and a sunroof. Take it from an ex-Chevy salesguy.

    Could it be an LT instead? And there are a few other important questions -- Leather or cloth? And bench seat or buckets?

    Does it have the alloy wheels? With alloys you got ABS. You can see it too on the dash, if an "ABS" symbol lights up when you start the car.

    Here's the thing -- I wouldn't slavishly follow the books on this car and expect to get all the dollars they say. The miles are excellent, but the color is an "old person" color that doesn't appeal so well to the younger folks who are looking for a used car in this range. You call it gold, I think of it as beige -- and the big thing is that the young turn their noses up at this shade. And the 60+ crowd that likes beige cars -- they're usually looking for something newer, because they grew up in the days when a seven-year-old car was ready for the junkpile. So it's not going to be an easy sell to them, either. Any dealer will know this and will base his offer accordingly. He's probably going to be sitting on it for a while.

    I'm not knocking the Impala. The 2000-2005 Impala/Monte Carlo with the 3.8 is one of the best cars GM made, and it is an absolutely terrific used car value. I own one myself, and I love it. But one of the reasons they're such a good value -- to a buyer -- is that they look big, and so people think they get bad gas mileage (which ain't true -- the mileage is actually terrific). That makes them hard to sell, especially if they're beige, and doubly so if they've got that filthy-looking factory cloth.

    If it's got the 3.8 and sunroof, as you say, I'll betcha it's got other goodies, too, which will help you sell it. Gosh, I hope you've got leather. I'm sure the book numbers you see here are right... but the book numbers don't mean a heckuva lot, and I wouldn't be surprised if you wound up having to take a grand off either one of those figures. If you're trading at a dealership, of course, the dealer will find a way to conceal the valuation problem -- there's always a way -- so I know I'll look like I'm full of hooey. But you get the salesperson to talk honestly, you'll hear the same thing.

    CRV's bring crazy money as used cars!

    They won't know the CD player isn't working unless you tell them and if you do, they may make a big deal out of it. I would try a local car stereo shop and see if they can fix it cheaply.

    Depending on how bad the dings and scratches are she shouild get 6-7000 from a dealer I would think. For 5000.00, if you were local, I would be the one buying it!

    since the owner is an upderpaid catholic school teacher, she will be quite happy to get more than expected, especially if she can get a good deal on a new Civic.

    Tehre is no shortage of inventory on Civics now so she can get a great deal.

    She should expect a lot for that CRV. The only bad thing is the miles but they aren't horribly high.

    I just hope she is happy in a Civic after owning a CRV.

    Stick - you are missing your obvious shot here..... trying to sell the CRV to me. Being an EX it should have a sunroof....

    yeah, I thought about you. But she was pretty insistent about not wanting to deal with a private sale. But, only about 10 minutes or so from where you travelled to buy your last car!

    Yes, it does have a moonroof. Gray insides, medium/dark blue exterior. May need struts/shocks at this point, but last time I rode in it seemed solid.

    so, shoot me an offer, in case the dealers don't pony up like LR and isell think they will.

    Hi I was hoping for some help.
    My mother would like to buy a new car, and I’d like to sell her old car privately for her so she doesn’t have to trade it in.

    The details are as follows:
    -2002 Subaru Outback Wagon
    -The color is regatta red pearl (with a tan interior)
    -60,300 miles
    -It has a CD player and a towing hitch, both of which were added aftermarket
    -It has a 5 speed manual transmission

    I would say that for an 8 year old car both the interior and exterior are in decent shape. My mother always makes a point of parking away from other cars in parking lots and the car has always been garaged- that being said, it is an 8 year old car.

    This car is located in the NYC area (Westchester County)

    Thank you for any guidance you can provide with regard to appropriate pricing.

    I'm wondering about the trade value of the following:

    Northern Virginia area
    2008 Prius - Base Model (Not the Touring)
    63,000k Miles
    Package No. 6 which includes Navigation and Leather
    Body excellent - not even a door ding
    Interior excellent. No tears, rips or cracks in leather.
    No accidents.
    New tires.

    I've looked at KBB, Edmunds, Black Book and NADA Guides - big disparity.

    Any ideas?

    Offered actual cash value is at $22,100 (I am purchasing a new base Armada SE for approximately Invoice-holdback-4000 rebate). There is some reconditioning that will need to be done to the Murano (new windshield, small dent, and some scratches). Most of the SL's have the leather and navigation which I don't have. I just have the premium package which is the Bose stereo and a few other minor options. I actually only paid $25,000 new in July of 2009, but was trying to make sure I am getting as much money for it as possible.

    Any other insights?

    That makes it a bit clearer. Most probably with a 2WD your price would be around 24k I guess. So 22,100 is very reasonable considering that some reconditioning has to be done which can get expensive. Also any reconditioning done on relatively new cars scares a lot of the buyers.Fair enough I would say. Maybe can try for 22.5k.

    Also just some advice. Dont buy the Armada .It has one of the worst reliabilities. Infact the Titan,Armada,Quest were the worst vehicles made by Nissan and they were the worst vehicles produced in USA from 04-07. I have an 04 Quest and it is a pretty poor vehicle considering that the loaded model costs 35k+ new .Plus,Armada sucks gas.. I would keep the Murano-- better reliability,fuel economy and resale. The Armada`s resale value is one of the worst out there. Any reason why you want to buy a big SUV like Armada? But much better choices out there.

    High miles on a newer car like a 1 or 2 yr old model really kills the resale value and they are sometimes tough to assess. But the good thing is it`s a Prius. They have better resales. My guesstimate on this one is between 10k-11k.

    Probably depends on the dealer too here. A Toyota dealer may offer more than a non-Toyota one. Try Carmax if you are near one of them. They give an actual cash value -good for 7 days.

    Thanks deltheking. I traded the Prius for a Hyundai Santa Fe. They gave me $12,500 for the Prius (and several thousand dollars below invoice for the Santa Fe) so I guess I did good.

    Actually we had a 2007 Armada that was leased and turned in last year when we purchased the Murano. My wife has missed the Armada since the day we turned it in. The 2007 Armada was actually the best vehicle and most reliable we have ever owned (minus gas mileage). We hope the 2010 Armada will be as good to us. Don't get me wrong the Murano is a very nice vehicle, but the rear visibility has caused my wife to run in to my truck and the basketball goal even with the rear view camera.

    As it was a lease, I am guessing you drove it less than 30k miles with the full Nissan warr intact. After the 36k miles expire--the problems start ;)

    Armada brake and rotor problems ,tire problems and numerous squeaks and rattles are very well known. Probably on a new vehicle-tough to see those problems. I always test drive a 40k-50k mile car if I can to decide how good /reliable it will be with time down the line . :P

    But just wanted to let you know some facts on the Armada,and also do consider its poor resale value.And also it is in its last year of production as far as I know. A newer redesigned one will be around the corner and then it will be a 5 yr old dated model. Just my opinion !!

    one our relatives has an Armada which they drive hard, the only problem they have had in over 4 years of ownership(bought used) was a flat tire.

    One of my friend`s sister`s relatives had an 05 Dodge Neon which had no problems till 250k miles.. So what ? Just b`cos 1 person had a good or bad experience ,doesn`t mean it is reflective of everyone. It is what it is. Facts are facts and I dont care if it`s a Nissan,Ford or any other make. MB has poor reliability: Few % may have no problems.Does it mean that MB is reliable?

    For every person you know that has a good experience,there are thousands others who have had a dismal experience.Nissan CEO himself admitted to problems at its Canton,MI plant where Quest,Titan ,Armada were produced. Several quality control teams were sent to that plant to evaluate the horrible quality concerns and problems.It was new plant with new workers with new equipment producing 3 new models - all for the 1st time- and it ended up being a colossal disaster and Nissan and it`s CEO had to do some major shake ups !

    Actually, it's usually the other way around. For everyone with a hunk of junk there's gobs of others with no problems. Even using the published reliability ratings pretty much confirms the difference between best and worst is not that vast of a delta. The earlier years Titans/Armadas did have QC problems but so do a lot of other new design vehicles. Our Honda Odyssey (2005) has relatively low reliability ratings and it has had pretty much every known first-year issue around (quite a list btw...) but the vehicle is still one of our favorites. Sometimes buying the vehicle you really like is worth living with a few problems. I recently switched from a steady diet of Toyotas to a Nissan and even if this thing ( a Pathfinder) turns out to be less reliable, I still like it more than the 4Runner.

    I'll say it until I'm blue in the face....Buy what you LIKE. Buying just for reliability makes it even more painful when it has a problem. Buying just for resale still costs you more when you trade it early because you WANT something else. If you happen to find something you really like that has a high reliabity rating and good resale value...bonus.

    Will be trading our 2009 Honda Pilot in the coming days for a CR-V. We no longer need such a large car with low gas mileage. What would be a good trade value for the following:

    Immaculate condition. (No accidents, no damage, not even a door ding.)

    I've looked at Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, Black Book and NADA. There is a significant difference in value from the lowest (Black Book) to the highest (NADA).

    Any idea what the true world value for this as a trade would be? What does Manhiem numbers look like?

    I'll be the first to say the money you'll lose on trade in will buy a ton of gas. I see the Pilot is rated at 18 MPG combined and a CRV 22. Yeah, it is gonna take a while to make that up for the trade in loss.

    I see you put a good bit of mileage on it, and hence the need to get something more fuel efficient. Rather than the CRV, try:
    Subaru Outback 2.5i with CVT
    Subaru Forester
    Mazda5
    2011 Odyssey (later, supposed to get 30mpg highway)

    SUVs have been selling very well, as far as I can see. 1 MDX available at my local dealer today. Not many Pilots (2 or 3) as I went by faster. Mileage will kill your value though.

    Looking at a black 2007 Camry LE I4 with 35,000 miles. I'm a novice at the used car game, so I figured I would gather opinions on whether or not the price I'm getting is fair.

    Car seems to be in very good shape, has a clean Car Fax and I bought my last Accord from this same dealer. He's offered to let me take it to my mechanic to check it out and it was not involved in the pedal recall. Also has new pads and rotors on the front brakes.

    Price on the car is $13,405. Any feedback or suggestions are appreciated.

    "Fair" doesn't count in the car buying biz. Check out Edmunds used car price guide. I'd start at dealer trade-in value and end at private party value.

    six small chips on hood, 2 small chips on roof from highway driving-no rust, no other dings or scratches, paint is shiny
    Interior is good, no stains or tears, no smoke, no pets, average wear on driver seat, no wear on other seats, mats are clean with no stains
    Newer tires, less than 6k miles
    Brake Pads - 50% according to dealer
    Oil changed every 3k-4k miles at Jiffy Lube or dealership. Did a couple of the services at dealership, I think around 30k and 60k miles.
    1 owner, clean carfax, no wrecks or claims

    The exterior has some hail dings on the hood and roof and I am quoted $900 to fix them

    Should I spend the money before I try to trade? What is the difference in trade allowance with and without the dings?
