2009 Ford Escape XLT 2.5 4cylinder FWD auto 13,700 miles, sun roof, cloth interior, cargo cover
sync, dark blue metallic, tires at 80%. Ann Arbor Michigan area. Looking for trade-in and sale by owner value.
    Thanks
P.S. Has the increased in gasoline prices help the value of 4 cylinder Escape? Hurt the value of the 2010 Taurus SHO?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,696
    $6500 to $7k trade.

private party? Throw on some new tires and start it out at $9995.

about $15,500-$16k. Value hasn't exactly increased, but it has held very very steady. It has only dropped about $1500 since last July.

A 2010 SHO, on the other hand, has held strong in the mid $26k range from last Thanksgiving until mid April this year ... when it increased to the low $27k range.

Private party on the Escape? Ask $19 and take $18k.

Wow $18k private party, I will assume the 27k is the wholesale price for the SHO so how much should I expect on dealer mark-up? No forget the dealer mark-up, how much of a difference between the two vehicles should I shoot for?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,696
$14k difference would be fair all around.

My galves subscription expires tonight and I'm not renewing.

You've done yoeman service in the meantime. Thanks.

You follow in the footsteps of only a handful of others, all of whom were hands-on car professionals.

I hope there's someone who can step into the void. My guess is that the thread will die unless someone with real auction data chooses to participate.

    Thanks again.

I have watched this site for some time and am truly sorry to see you go. Your advice has been very good and has helped a number of people.

I myself have never used Galves in the years that I ran my business relying mostly on the industry standards of Black Book and actual daily auction reports. The volatility of car values and the market itself means that the real value of a car is what is it selling for at auction today. Every other price, tradein, retail and private sale is based on that value.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,696
    appreciate the appreciation. :)

Just so y'all know, i'm not going anywhere. Just can't provide that kind of accurate info anymore.

For that 1-year subscription, they gave me a deal at, I believe, $119. Now they want double that! Thankfully, I just bought a car right before it expired. Hopefully I won't need it anytime soon.

Thanks for helping us all out with YOUR personal GALVES subscription. Perhaps edmunds.com could pay for one for the host so they can continue to provide pinpoint used car/trade in pricing?

I think many of us regulars don't put a whole lot of stock in TMV pricing.

Yeah... I kind of doubt that would happen, but you could always email someone higher up the food chain, send in a help desk ticket, or post in the Forums software discussion.

I hear that, for a few months, there was some sort of backdoor that made the the MMR records open to the public. It was pretty cool. Not that I would know! :P

    That's what I was thinking...

I mean, you would think such a reputable site as Edmunds could base their TMV trade-in values on real auction reports. ;)

A NY Times reporter is looking to talk with someone who traded in a car - or plans to trade one in - because the value had gone up or because the dealer contacted them asking if they would trade in. If you’d like to discuss this experience, please contact pr@edmunds.com by Friday, June 10.

    Color: Blue with gray trim
Major Options: Automatic climate control, 6 CD player, sat radio - all of these came with the special edition trim
Condition: One large dent that we will fix before selling and the usual handful of tiny dings and scratches that would be on any 4 year old car
Tires - Original and getting somewhat worn
Brakes - Never had any brake work done
    Maintenance - Followed instructions

I will be selling this car within the next few weeks and would love a couple of educated (or even uneducated) guesses as to what this car would be worth as a trade in or in a private party sale. I have looked at KBB, but have a hard time believe some of those numbers - they just seem too high.

    Mileage: 135,000
    Color: [exterior/interior]
Major Options: Power windows/door locks cruise
    Tires are pretty new.
Maintenance, was told was maintained well. Oil, ATF changes etc.

I am looking at an 02 with a V 6, it's a little rough, and the ABS and traction control light are on, as well as a check engine light. Claims it's the left front hub/sensor, and he will get it warranted (part only) and "Help" me install it. ( I don't need "help" installing it, it's about a 1 hour job)

As far as these ABS light and traction control lights I have seen where a bad Hub/sensor will do this, As I have worked in a garage all my life.

Supposedly the oil and other services were kept after, and again, supposedly the intake gasket was already replaced 2 years ago.
There are 135,000 miles on it.
The hood needs painted and the left rear door and quarter are dented, with the front dog leg rusting out due to the dent. Rest of the inner fenders and wheel hole openings look solid.
Top of dashboard is messed up, "rippled" or like the fabric has come loose from the substrate.
He is wanting $1,500.00 I am wanting to pay only $1,000.00 due to the miles and the work needed.
I heard through the grapevine this is his girlfriends car, and she only wanted about $800.00 for it, and he is just trying to make some money on the deal.
Or do you think it is worth $1,500.00

Only other option right now is to doctor up my 1994 escort wagon and try to get it inspected.
Inspection runs out end of June, 2011.

    Thanks,

I had an 03 Alero and the car was possessed.Impossible to start and it would stall out when driving on the highway at 70mph. Take a look at the Alero reports on this site as my experience was apparently not unique.IMHO the car is dangerous

For years Qbrozen has contributed enomously to this forum on his own time(Edmunds.com is a innovative,well-respected automotive website - constantly referenced in the media/press - significant advertising revenues and I'm certain income) and you mean to tell me Edmunds.com Inc. will not purchase a Galves subscription for Qbrozen. And I see that the hosts are are not empowered to make business decisions? Huh??? I don't mean to over-react but when I read these last few posts I just couldn't believe it. 199 bucks - really Edmunds??? seriously ????

I'll take a wild, just a wild guess at this, and say there may be something in the Terms & Conditions of a Galves subscription that forbids posting this information publicly. Just a wild guess on my part.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 263,337
Not that I know for sure, but that's probably a pretty good guess... Hope the Galves police don't bust qbrozen.... lol

    Thanks jproc,
Well that don't sound good. I have been off work sick since Friday, so I have not seen him.
I did offer $1,000 Thursday, but he said "She" wouldn't go for it.
I wouldn't mind taking it if I could get it for $1,000, but not sure still about $1,500.00.
See what happens this week, I'm taking the last week off in June to patch up the excort and either replace or have it replaced the exhaust, and take it for inspection.

    Thanks,
    Tony

    1) Dan Edmunds is an editor. It is pure coincidence that his last name is the same as his employer's name.

    2) No, hosts don't have purchasing power. We aren't located in the main office, but are spread throughout the country. Our boss is located in the main office, and controls the budget, and has no problem with requests that would enhance the community experience.

    3) As mentioned by others, Galves is a fee-for-subscription service. While they aren't likely to make an issue over an individual posting information from their service, they'd probably have a problem with a company doing so. It would be no different than if I had a Carfax subscription and posted complete Carfax reports for people, for free.

Oh, sure, if Edmunds posted info directly from Mannheim, it would be a problem. However, that's not exactly what I'm talking about. Galves, for example, populates their database based on auction results, at least according to their literature. Edmunds could obviously do the same thing. Whether or not they use mannheim published data to do that is completely up to them and nobody needs to know.

I have NO idea where the Edmunds numbers come from now .... but we know its not from reality. ;)

And I absolutely agree with NOT buying me a subscription. It would be a conflict of interest and could land Edmunds in hot water, for sure.

This Alero sounds really, really nasty. Personally, I wouldn't pay even $1000. Your escort wagon, at least you know what it needs, & the history? I'd keep that.

Just opinions from an amateur car buff who hasn't seen either car.....
  • Kirstie_HKirstie_H Administrator Posts: 11,241
I couldn't agree more. You're going from a "beater" that's has issues mostly known to you, to a "beater" that may have issues unknown to you. Unless you can buy a vehicle a step up - at a couple thousand dollars more - it's really not worth making a lateral move into what might be a disaster.

    Hmmm..

Depending on condition... probably a $3,000 vehicle. Galves pegs it at $3200, but MMR also looks like 33-35...

Not a really strong vehicle at the moment.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks. :) The buyer got a very good car at a fair price.

Fyi practically every dealer I spoke with was $4K on a straight trade. So I feel very good with what I got. Plus that's one less point of contention when we buy the new car.
