What's the VIN? If he got it at auction, I MIGHT be able to pull it up. I've looked in your area in the past week, and no 2.5S with 18k miles have crossed the block for a below average price (which, by the way, is $15k-$16k, so the price is ABSOLUTELY scary!).

Well, you aren't in horrible shape. About $28k at auction. That means you might see $26-$27k as a trade. I suggest, if you have a carmax, go see them. Maybe you'll get lucky.

My wife wants to get rid of our 2005 Subaru Legacy GT with 65000 miles on it. Blue with rear spoiler, auto and dimming mirror. Was in a huge (12,000+ to fix) wreck a couple of years ago and is on its second turbo. Don't you love Subaru turbos! Hopefully this one will be on Subaru but I am not getting my hopes up. Is 6000 on trade reasonable?
Now for the "new" car ... 2008 Honda CRV EX-L with Nav. 32,000 miles Burgundy. Independent Dealer wants 22000 for it.
In Pittsburgh.
Also, would I be crazy to consider a 2004 Lexus RX with close to 100K miles?
Well, its not coming up in Manheim at all. Wonder what "auction" it came from. Maybe a police auction?
Alright... I'm going to post a "trick" if you will. If this is inappropriate, please let me know.
If you really really don't want to pay the autocheck fee (I highly recommend the unlimited VINs for $45, personally, when you are in the midst of car shopping), you can create an ad on Ebay. Ebay offers free car listings for local ads. You only get something like your first 5 or 6 free, so use it sparingly. They provide a free autocheck report when you post the ad. Yes, you really do have to post it, but then you just take it down immediately after getting the report. Is it dishonest? Yeah, I guess. But you are limited on your ads, so, in a way, they are giving it to you the free ads and it is up to you what to do with them. You will just have one less free one if you use it for this purpose.

Dump a 65k mile car for a 100k mile car? Yes, I think that's crazy.
$6k trade is more in line with a Subie with no accident history. It is really really difficult for me to say what you'll be offered for yours without seeing it in person. I think you'll just have to shop it around and see what happens. Frankly, I think taking $6k for the car is a mistake. That's alot of car for the money. If nothing else, why not sell it yourself? That would probably be easier with a stick... but the right buyer still might award you like $7k-$7500 for it.
If that CRV checks out, that's actually a good price for one with Navi. It would probably fetch around $19k-$19500 at auction if its real nice. Have it checked over, look for good tires, brakes, etc ... the usual.

It's a loophole that EBay and Autocheck have left open. I don't feel obligated to help them close it.
I'd probably try that, BUT... the story is sounding more & more fishy to me. If this guy bought it at auction, he should have some paperwork to prove it.

I know two folks with RX that have lost transmissions in the 100k-130k window and we lost transaxle in our GX470 at 90k. The rest of the vehicle seems to hold up terrific though so perhaps one large repair is worth it. Our GX now has over 200k with no issues and drum-tight.
Thanks for the information. My wife hates the car at this point. We just dumped 2000 into a car that isn't worth a whole lot. I realize that it is going to cost a lot more to get a comparable new to us car but at the same time we wouldn't mind getting a SUV because the back is more practical for the dog and our kids gear.
$27-$30k depending on options, area traded, and time when it's traded. By that I mean what the current supply as well as demand is at that time. Please let me know what the final actual trade ends up being..
The CRV is one of those cars that is probably a better value new. $22 for an '08 is a lot of dough -- qbrozen can tell you the auction values, but only you can figure out whether that makes sense for you.
I realize that it isn't smart to buy a CR-V used but most of the other cars that we would want also have insane resale values, Rav4, Forester and Outback or even the Rogue. I figure a new 2012 CRV LX with AWD goes for 23500 or so.
I guess if you don't want an American sedan or a large American SUV what are the smart buys on the used front? Sadly, I don't think there are many out there right now. We really want a small AWD SUV. I am afraid of an Escape since they have been around for so long.
Well, normally, the car that is around longer is more reliable as more/all of the bugs have been worked out. But I'd avoid an Escape anyway... but that's based on personal taste.
New CRVs have gotten ridiculously expensive.
According to TrueCar, a 2012 LX AWD is a bit over $24k. A 2012 Forester 2.5X Premium is a hair under $23k, FYI.

Since my Grandpa died before the lease on his 2010 Odyssey was up, Honda is treating it as a voluntary reposession. They are going to send the van to auction as is. Technically my Grandpa is responsible for whatever the difference is between what the van sells for an what is owed on the van (12 payments + residual). Since he is no longer with us and there is no estate, Honda finance will just write off the loss.

Considering trading the CX-9 for a lightly used 2011 Odyssey (in Denver).
Would trade:
2010 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD model, no additional options Dolphin Grey exterior with black interior 36k miles, nice and clean condition.
Looking at:
2011 Honda Odyssey EX-L with navigation Smoky Topaz exterior with truffle interior 7k miles, nice condition (as expected for such a new model) Not at a Honda dealer (so not certified)
We didn't get to the point of talking on my trade, but they claimed to be at their lowest at $32,400 on the Honda. Since it only seems to be about $3k away from a brand new one, it didn't seem like much of a deal, but I'm curious as to what you think the numbers are.
That's a ton of miles on the mazda. Probably hit you as low as $21k.
That Oddy with Nav at that price is as low as you can go, it seems. Could fetch around $31k at auction. So its a good price. Does it make sense compared to new? Of course not, its a used Honda. However, $3k for 7k miles isn't anything to sneeze at, either. That's over 42 cents a mile. And a $2500 gap from year to year is pretty standard on $20k-$30k vehicles.

Thanks. I guess so although it was $23k sticker new and paid a little over $21k last summer which was a good deal at the time. Was wondering if there are additional thoughts on whether this is about the right number.
I priced an Odyssey last summer (August). I priced the EX-L with RES and it was 33800. I didn't even try that hard. The no-haggle dealer out of Boston was about 300-400 cheaper. The NAV is slightly more expensive though.
LE trim (highest) on both. Heated leather, NAV, 4wd, etc.
The 11 strikes me as a slightly better deal; probably stickered around $42k though I'd guess the real transaction price is closer to $38k on these. They have had it advertised at this price for awhile, but I'd guess there's not a lot of wiggle room.
The 10 doesn't have the DVD (don't care), really low miles for the year. Lowest price I've seen on new 12's locally seems to be $38k.
They're both pretty fair deals if you've gotta have the LE. The lower-end models are far better values in my book (i bought an SE). There's about $6k getting up to the LE and it doesn't add that many features really and it's just not a luxury type vehicle IMHO. Mechanical/suspension bits are all the same outside of the AWD system.
Based on what Nissan is doing to these for 2013....the value of these should go up if there was any sense in this world.
Thanks Q - I haven't been back to that dealer with the used Odyssey yet, but I did visit a Honda dealer to look at a new one today, and you hit the trade on the Mazda spot on. They started at $19k, but implied they may be able to get to $21k (which I took to mean they could). With a reasonable discount on a new Odyssey, the difference was definitely more than I was hoping for, so I passed.
I was curious about a lease though. I've never done one, but am considering it for the Ody. They offered $439/month (plus tax) for 36 months with nothing down on a new EX-L w/RES. Having already worked through some of the numbers, I thought that was a really good deal, and if I had gone in set at doing a lease, I probably would've signed for it, but since I'm still struggling between purchase and lease, I passed on that as well.
At perhaps $2,500 savings on that used 2011 versus a new 2012, that option isn't exactly enticing either.
Oh well - it's good I like the CX-9. It makes it easy not to make any quick decision. Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, I agree. Guess this means the next xterra, if there is one, is going to get bigger. How have you liked your Pathfinder?
As for the LE trim, our current car has heated seats, and I'm told that will continue . The LE feature I like is that it has a locking/unlocking center diff which allows it to run an AWD mode on pavement. This would be the vehicle for shuttling to the ski areas, so lots of driving in mixed conditions on pavement. Otherwise, a new Silver Edition can be had for about $31 +TTL.
Real happy with the PF. Piled about 60k miles on it the last coupe years and outside of a couple annoyances have had no real problems and never back to the dealer. I run mining roads on a regular basis and pretty much beat the snot out of my daily-driver so I've been real impressed. My Tundra didn't hold up this well over the same mileage.
I installed airbags to improve the rear suspension/hauling ability and put Bilstein shocks all around. One thing to be aware of is the need for premium fuel if you want premium performance. It's only recommended but it does make a difference when hammering on it. I usually have to pass trucks in short-passing zones and pull a lot of hills so I tend to stick with premium fuel most of the time. If I'm just driving a long highway trip I don't bother.
I understand the wife piece. I had to buy the most expensive minivan on the planet just to get the color combo she wanted!
I understand the move on Nissan's part. Sort of a shame they named it Pathfinder is all.
BTW, I saw a number of Pathfinders when I was down in Chile a month ago...I wonder how the new version will be received internationally? Lots of Nissan and Great Wall crew cabs on the road down there, Toyotas, not as much.
Oh I have no doubt it will sell. That doesn't make it a better vehicle for those that want/need a real SUV. The PF and 4Runner are pretty much the only choices for mid-size SUV at the moment. I liked the PF better and I'm sure there are others that would at least like the choice. Oh well sign of the times. I may just keep this one a lot longer than usual. If anything Nissan should rename the 2013 because that's deceptive advertising.
Hey Q - what are newer (2011) X3's doing at auction? Let's say the "28" model with popular options - premium package, cold weather and navigation?
The handful that dealers have around here in Denver are being listed at a mere $2-3k less than new - just curious if the auctions are reflecting that as well.
I'm a believer that the name of a car can really sink or swim its chances. My favorite example is the CR-Z. If Honda named it Insight Sport, suddenly it sounds credible because compared to the Insight, it seems like an honest attempt at a fun car. Way more sporty than the Insight. But by naming it CR-Z, Honda brought on all the emotional baggage that comes with the CRX, and nearly all of those former owners were never going to be drawn to a hybrid. Don't even draw the comparison; they could have given the car its own personality with the right name.
If Toyota brought out a 2 door hybrid coupe, of course they'd call it the Prius Sport or something, and would never dream of calling the MR2h or Celica-h. It would be tons of fail...
Wow! $40k at auction, or $40k for an expected fair price? I'm assuming you mean $40k at auction, and I guess that makes sense, 'cause the handful of used ones around here are listed from $39k on up to mid-$40k's.
We're considering a new one, nicely equipped, for around $43-44k or so. That's for a leftover 2011; 2012 would be perhaps $1,000 to $1,500 more.
Obviously, too new of a car for used ones to be any kind of deal, huh?
For average condition, I'm seeing hammer prices from $36k up to around $41k. I don't know equipment levels on these, so I'm making the assumption that the $39k-$41k numbers are for loaded ones.

This is for a colleague who's done with his post-doc here and is leaving the country.
2009 Elantra Sedan -- I believe they're all "GLS" 1.6 l four; automatic transmission 45k, silver Non-smoker, no accidents but some parking lot dings and scratches. Equipped with all the usual stuff, and he's got two weeks to get rid of it.
What do they do at auction (Thanks in advance, qb!) and what do y'all think he should sell it for on the street?
In fact, I'd argue the Veloster comes closer. The base Veloster's 40mpg makes it a credible modern CR-X HF, and the new turbo model is close to the Si.
This is a weird one; LE trim, rare V8 model, with the wacky King Ranch junior interior color. Miles are a little higher than ideal. Q, what do you think they are into this one for? It feels high to me, but the only V8 comparisons I've found are leftover 11's in the $36 range...the engine is hard to come by.
$8500 average at auction. For quick sale, list it for $9995.
Of course, people will think its a scam if he goes into the whole "leaving the country. must sell" bit. But $9995 isn't so cheap to be scary, I don't think.

Murano outsells the Pathfinder and XTerra combined.
They're keeping the XTerra, and since the Pathy is a 3-row family vehicle, why not? Off roaders are better off with the smaller X anyway.
I bet sales double.
BTW, I saw a number of Pathfinders when I was down in Chile a month ago...I wonder how the new version will be received internationally? Lots of Nissan and Great Wall crew cabs on the road down there, Toyotas, not as much.

The handful that dealers have around here in Denver are being listed at a mere $2-3k less than new - just curious if the auctions are reflecting that as well.

Yeah, they could have grown the Murano, and the next Rogue could have moved up a notch since they have the Juke as well.

Non-smoker, no accidents but some parking lot dings and scratches.
Equipped with all the usual stuff, and he's got two weeks to get rid of it.
What do they do at auction (Thanks in advance, qb!) and what do y'all think he should sell it for on the street?
Cheers -Mathias
CR-Z is not the spiritual successor to the CR-X.
In fact, I'd argue the Veloster comes closer. The base Veloster's 40mpg makes it a credible modern CR-X HF, and the new turbo model is close to the Si.
Let's see a non-hybrid CR-Z, though...

Of course, people will think its a scam if he goes into the whole "leaving the country. must sell" bit. But $9995 isn't so cheap to be scary, I don't think.

I'm pretty sure I'm seeing the auction results for this very one, however.
Crossed the block at the SF Bay auction on Jan 11th with 48,537 miles. Storm Grey. Average condition. Got $21,750. So I'd say his price is quite fair.
