gbrozen, I am a frequent poster over at Stories From The Sales Frontlines, and a former manager at several dealerships. I usually don't do this as I usually am pretty close in what the value of my trades are, but sure could use your opinion, if you don't mind.

I have a 2013 Mercedes E350 Sport Sedan, 5000 miles on it, Diamond White with Natural Beige Leather, MSRP was $64850.00 back in September when I bought it. I ordered my 2014 and it is expected at the dealership on May 1st, give or take a week.

From what my dealership tells me, they have been heavily discounting these cars, $7000 is not unheard of. But, he also told me that when the new car comes in, he won't have any 2013's left in stock, in fact, he only has 12 now and only 5 more coming in from Germany in the next few weeks. The rest will be 2014's.

He thinks the car will be worth about $51,000. He always puts my traded cars on his lot because they never have dings, dents or scratches - super clean if you know what I mean, almost a demo.

Since Manheim has not had many go through the auctions, what do you think - about 5 or 6 weeks away from trading. The new once will be $65000+ a few bucks.

    Would appreciate your feedback.

You probably know better than I do. Heck, you certainly have way more experience. But it seems to me $51k is big money. Absolutely zero have even hit $50k at auction.

Assuming no runs, hits, or errors and cleans up real well, you'd be looking at spending around $15k to buy a similar one from a dealer. So I'd say start it out at $14,995, which should be lower than all retailers in your area. Cut it loose for anything north of $13,500.

Thanks. My guess is that clean wholesale is about 48-49K, and since my cars are a step above new, he gives me a few thousand more.

As far as knowing more than you, it all depends on the topic and the question. With the 2013's quickly evaporating, that gives my trade a possible reprieve in May. Only time will tell.

    Again, thanks for your feedback.

Last week a friend told me that he was able to buy an S class Mercedes with low miles at a great price. Anyway, it was about 24 % of sticker for a 3 year old car at the time. He had a friend buy it for him at the auction. This wasn't a recent purchase but a few years ago.

My question is was this an aberration? Specific to the S class? Or is there a huge mark up on all Mercedes Benz cars?

With that in mind, what would a 2010 ML 350 with AWD, NAV and low miles in Pittsburgh, PA go for from an independent dealer?

Hello, all, I am in the market for a cheap used car that's relatively good on gas. I'm looking at two vehicles and curious to know their wholesale, trade, and dealer retail values. Both are one owner cars.

    Flint, Mi
2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS(non turbo charged)
    2 door coupe
    4 cylinder, automatic
    Fwd
    Mileage:135,000
    Color: Red/black
Major Options: I believe the only thing worth mentioning is that has a pioneer system equipped, everything else seems to be stock for the trim.
    Condition:
    Very nice considering age.
    Tires - n/a
    Brakes - n/a
Maintenance - history of oil changes, all other recommended service unknown at this point.

    2005 Honda Civic LX SE
    Body Style: 4 door sedan
    Engine: 4cylinder, automatic
    Driveline: Fwd
    Mileage:101,000
    Color: Silver/grey
Major Options: Nothing more than what the trim offers.
    Condition:
    Great exterior and interior.
    Tires - n/a
    Brakes n/a
Maintenance - Well taken care of, all service done except the water pump and timing belt plus related work associated with that job.

Who knows. At that specific time, that specific place, that specific car. But, just to give a clue, a 2010 S550 with average miles is around $50k a the block right now.

Looks like quite a few ML350s in PA have been in "above average" condition and commanding a bit of a premium. Looking at average condition examples, I see $27500 for a black one with 27k miles, $27250 for another black with 30k, $30k for a black with 30k ... probably an option difference there. Then there is another larger group with 32k-34k miles for right around $30k.

So I'd say $30k is the sweet spot. By the time a dealer gets it home, cleans it up, puts new rubber on it, it hits the lot with a $35k asking price and $32-33k should put it in your driveway.

    Cobalt - $4k wholesale/trade, $4500-5k at the block, and $7k-7500 fair retail.

Numbers are exactly the same for the Civic.

Ah, thanks very much. I actually thought the Cobalt would be 500-1000 less as a trade in due to it being domestic and high mileage. Happy I asked so I could approach the situation intelligently. The Civic didn't surprise me.

Once again, I appreciate the information.

Assuming they didn't take you to the cleaners on the new lease and you were on-track with miles on the 2010.....anytime you can walk away early from a lease with $1 in your pocket is a pretty good day.

    Thanks.

He basically said the same thing about auction prices of the S class. He couldn't figure out why they were retaining their value so much better today than a few years ago.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,889
Was it low 29k or high 29k miles? I ask because a pearl white one with 29,928 just went through yesterday in PA. It got $25,750. Although it says that one was above average, while your description tells me yours wasn't.

For one in your condition, $24k trade-in is just about right.

This is a tough one, if only because it's not anything new and modern. This is for an estate I'm administering, with 7 fighting heirs, and since I haven't figured out how to split a truck 7 ways, it must go, along with a bunch of other equipment. Is there a blue book for tractors? The joys of being the county administrator in Probate Court. Anyway, the details are:

    1997 Chevrolet 1500 pickup
    Cheyenne trim level
My VIN decoder says its the 4.3 V6, auto
2wd, ECab, standard bed, with matching color cap
    123,xxx miles
    beige/light brown over tan cloth
new transmission in 2011, new radiator in 2011, new a/c last summer, all according to the decedent's 80 year old sister.
It also has a repaint to factory color, due primarily to the stellar quality of late 90s GM paint.
It's the typical "old man's" truck we have in this part of the world, which is to say it was used as transportation only, and maybe carried the lawnmower, but no hard work. Its in very good shape for being 16 years old, and never having seen a garage.

Location is Brunswick, Georgia, on the coast, off I-95 between Savannah and Jacksonville. Very rural, which means trucks sell here. Always.

I know the value is whatever I can get somebody to pay, but I'm thinking $2500-$3000.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 50,432
that would have been my guess, but no clue what your area does to value.

Your guess sounds reasonable enough. If the repaint is real good, interior is nice ... could even be more. It is a 1500 with a 6-cyl, which hurts. But given the care, $3k might be the bottom. $3500 shouldn't be tough to get. If its a real looker, I'd probably start at $4495.

Dealer offered me $20k as trade in. Fair???
Seems a little low to me but thought I would ask.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 32,889
My gut reaction was that $20k seems high for a near 7-year-old truck.

I'm trying to look it up, but I don't seem to have an "LT3" option. Looking at LTZs, I could say that my gut was right and $20k is strong. He's definitely giving you credit for the low miles. They are going for around $18k with 80-90k miles, which would put trade at $17k. I'd add about $1500 for your low miles. So even if real nice, I wouldn't have expected more than $19k. Must be a real nice rig.

Got them up to $20.5k for trade in
It is an LT3 which is basically an LTZ. It's actually more loaded than most LTZ's.

With the NAV, I think $22k would probably be a first offer. I think you could push for more than that. $22,500 should be doable, and maybe even $23k to the right dealer.

Retail? Well, probably not worth it, IMHO. You'd have to sell for $25k to entice anyone to deal with you rather than a dealer, and considering Nevada offers a tax credit on trades, you are talking about an effective trade value of $24,610-$24,840 (tax varies throughout nevada apparently). So I'd just trade it, personally.

Without the crazy used car market, these bring insanely high prices. Is it really worth it to buy used? Lets say he gets $23K for it. Honda dealer slaps a CPO on it & puts it on the lot for what? $26,500? That's literally the same price of a new one (sans the NAV).

    Greetings all!

Due to a change in family circumstance my primary driver became a "second" car and as a result, I'll have used just about half of the allotted 36k mileage.when the term comes to an end later this month.

Is there substantial value to this mileage, as simple as multiplying this 18k remainder times what the overage would have cost (15 or 20 cents a mile)? This comes out to be a couple of grand which when added to the residual seems way high.

Does anyone have any experience with how dealers might credit this towards the new lease... is appraisal first by an entity like Carmax the way to go?

Our intent is to re-lease the same, current model car (now becoming our primary driver) though not necessarily through the previous dealer.

    Any thoughts most appreciated :)

Give us the specifics and we'll give you an idea. What you are going to do is trade the car in like you own it. Most likely it will be worth more than the lease buyout. Get a number from carmax, a buy bid from a dealer and a trade number from the dealer you want to buy from.

    Nearest Metro: Trenton, NJ
Year/Make/Model: 2010 Honda Accord LX Sedan Auto (4 cylinder base model)
    Mileage: 18,783
    Color: White/Tan-Beige
    Condition:
Exterior has nothing of note (finish has consistent shine) other than front bumper has enough lower scraping/damage (parking curbs) to warrant replacement (confirmed with Honda Finance this falls under their $1500 wear 'n tear allowance: part #60210-TA0-A90ZZ $350 retail + paint/installation). Interior is in excellent appearance after detailing.
Tires - Original 18k+ with rotations/no substantial edge wear/good to go!
Maintenance - All factory required maintenance documented
    No accidents

    Thank you for consideration :)

Thank you for the advice. Since a quicker sale is worth as much, if not more, to me than top dollar, I think I'll start it off at $3500 and get beat up down to $3000 or a little less, since at this price point the guy with $100 bills will often get the deal.

Thank you for the appraisal qbrozen... buyout is 13539.

Going back to my leasing dealer this weekend to see what their number will be and then I'll hit another dealer or two in Jersey just to sell. Turns out there isn't a Carmax in the area but something similar called Carsense so I'll give them a shot at buying too.

    Thanks again!

There hasn't been another one with anywhere near that mileage at auction. A real clean one with 80k nabbed $5k at the block.

Yours does have some needs, but lower miles... so I would guess that it is about equivalent. So figure $4k-$4500 trade.

Sounds like a great candidate for private party. $6995 asking and $6k taking.

Appreciated your help on my trade in vehicle, qbrozen.

Not to be greedy, but do you mind pulling numbers on the below two cars? Since I'm looking to get a CPO, I figure auction numbers would at least help in getting a beginning negotiation point.

    Car 1
    Location: Honolulu, HI
    Year/Make/Model: 2011 Infiniti G25 Journey
    Body Style: 4dr
    Engine: 2.5 V6 Auto
    Driveline: RWD
    Mileage: 15,800
    Color: Moonlight white/graphite
    Major Options: sun roof
    Condition:
Since it's a CPO, everything should be good. New tires and maintained
    Other: Clean carfax

    Car 2
    Location: Honolulu, HI
    Year/Make/Model: 2011 Infiniti G37 Journey
    Body Style: 4dr
    Engine: 3.7 V6 Auto
    Driveline: RWD
    Mileage: 15,400
    Color: Moonlight white/graphite
Major Options: Premium package (sunroof; Rear cam&radar parking distance sensors; Bose audio system w/ Internal HD : 2.00 GB storage; power Tilt/ telescoping steering wheel; Memorized adjustment: includes two driver settings, door mirror position and steering wheel position; Driver seat ; details: memorized height and memorized tilt; Smart card/smart key; ; includes memory seat and memory steering wheel)
    Condition:
Since it's a CPO, everything should be good. New tires and maintained
    Other: Clean carfax

Again, much thanks if you are able to pull for me.

I didn't realize you were in hawaii. Could be a whole different market there.

Here on the mainland, it would be roundabout $21,500 on the G25 and about $26,500 on the G37.

I would imagine they are asking somewhere around $27k and $32k, respectively. If you could get them down to $2k less than that, that would probably be a good deal.

Again, your HI market may vary (greatly).

    Thanks for the help qbrozen.

The difficult thing with the negotiation is that they're both CPOs that they were used as loaners - the G37 was a loaner on a lease.

Since they were dealer cars, we could assume that they got the cars under invoice and that the leased car had a cap under invoice and a 70% residual. I'm thinking $25k on the G25 and $28-28.5k on the G37.

    Thanks again!

well, your price on the g25 is exactly what I said to shoot for, but you are most likely low on the 37. At least for a CPO one. But it can never hurt to try.
