I am thinking about buying a 2010 Yukon Denali with 13099 miles for $42,000.00. It has all the bells and whistles but just was curious as to if I should buy this SUV or wait until the new model comes out. It seems like to good of a deal to pass up. What do you think?

OK, I know this is well out of the books and auction list, but what is an old TL worth these days?

2000 Acura 3.2TL. blue over tan (as if it matters). 169K. 1 (family) owner. runs real good now all tuned up! new alternator and battery. plenty of meat on the tires, and new front brakes. Overall, pretty good shape. Never any body of paint work, but paint is tired with plenty of scratches. interior is not too bad. Looks respectable after a good detail.

and not that I ever should (my daughter is pushing for this!) but we saw a private sale BMW. a 1997 Z3 1.9. AT. probably makes my Volvo look fast. Red over black. base level but nice alloys, new tires. 130K. needs some serious detail work (headlights, trim) but paint looks good. Brand new roof (probably expensive) Owner admits to needing an exhaust and motor mounts (has estimates for ~1K).

I know it is a silly thing to even think about, but what the heck is that worth? 3K? he wants 5, I figure 4 is probably all the $ and then some.

Like you said, you wouldn't really be able to look these things up, so its all going to be based on "what would I pay for it."

'97 1.9 auto with 130k? Hell, even a similar vintage Miata would run circles around it. It would have to be real nice for $3k, IMHO. With the work it needs, I wouldn't feel too comfortable over $2500. There is a lack of demand here. Nobody but a high school girl would want it, and few fathers would buy it for them.

The TL is an easier sell. I'd think you could still get $3k for that.

Time to evaluate the fleet. Thinking that both might have to go.

    2009 Lexus RX 350
    44,000 miles
    black with tan guts
    base
    AWD
    Pretty good condition

    2007 Honda Odyssey EX
    Graphite with light gray interior
    85,000 miles
Lived a hard life. Kids have trashed the inside but will spend some time cleaning it up. A few dents on the outside. At one point my wife got an estimate of 600 to fix it but not sure if we have added to the dent total since then.

    In Pittsburgh, PA

Looking for a trade in number for both. Pretty good chance that they will both go to a Honda dealer.

~$18,500 and ... well... tough to really pin it down without seeing just how bad it is, but I'll throw a blind number of $8500 on it.

I agree about the BMW. at that price he is likely to have it around for a while. I did not bother to drive it, but I am sure it is quite the putt putt mobile. I would never get an AT version for myself, but I really would be better off with an AT since I would need to share with the non-stick drivers to make it work.

as to the TL, I was thinking 3K should be pretty easy. most likely the first person to see it would take it. If I tried for much more like 4K that might be a tough sell.

If we do dump it soon, might go with a CL ad @ $3,500 and see what happens.

probably will look to ditch my Integra soon regardless, and I know what to ask/take for that!

miles helped, yes, but the Legend also has kind of a following, whereas the TL has fallen more into that "just another car" category.

    color? location?

A black one in KY with 76k went through about 3 weeks ago and hit $37k.

If that's at a Land Rover dealer, I suspect they won't go under $41k. I'd have a hard time paying more than $40k for it.

(hell, who am I kidding? I wouldn't pay anywhere near that for a used Range Rover!)

Seems like all the money....and I'm assuming it's an AWD. Location will play a big part in this, but I think you'd want to be south of $40k to be a good deal. That being said...there's not many of these on the market so it's hard to really pin down. Regardless of miles, it's still three+ years old and should have a significant amount of depreciation. Redesign will be awhile and probably be $20k more than this.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring out the different models of this. There is the Yukon AWD or FWD, Yukon 1500 AWD or 4wd or FWD, hybrid, 2500, etc, etc.

So, looking at an AWD Denali, they are going for about $40k with under 30k miles. None have had less than 20k, so it seems you found something here, as long as its clean and no black marks in its past.

We're in Jacksonville, FL, with a lease ending in exactly one month and the wife wants to get into a 2013 Enclave. The residual is $16,283 (all payments made). I'm wondering if it's possible that the trade-in value would be high enough to warrant flipping it at the Buick dealership (or CarMax) instead of simply walking away at lease end. We are slightly over the mileage allowance, so we'd need to consider those costs along with the $300 turn-in fee.

    The goods: 2010 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring / FWD / 47k miles / black-on-sweaty-black

Major Options: Sun roof, rear-view camera, Bose audio (no navi; no entertainment)
Condition: Interior is in decent condition - a little dusty, but nothing a little Armor All couldn't fix. Nothing broken or exceptionally worn, with exception of the two car seats we've had continually installed in the second row for the entire life of the lease (42 mos), so there may/probably will be indentations.
Tires are at the end of the life. All maintenance completed at Mazda dealership with records.

Exterior has two blemishes of note - a slight hair-line scratch on rear passenger door (about 3 inches long) and a small pea-sized dent on other rear passenger door (no paint loss), probably from a neighbor car door opening into it. There might be a couple other minor scratches if you look hard enough, but nothing that's really memorable.

Any chance I could get some recent auction prices for similar vehicles? Also, any other advice would be very much welcome.

    Thanks!
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
Auction prices are around $19k for clean ones. You'd probably be looking at $17500-18k trade.

Problem with selling to carmax is, I believe, there is tax to worry about (I'm unclear on this since I know the dealer would be reselling it, so there may be no tax, I'm not sure). So you may not get anything out of the deal, although you'd avoid the fees. Better bet is trade it in at the Buick dealer because you'd get the tax benefit.

Thanks so much for the reply!

Well, you were spot-on with the auction prices - I took it into CarMax yesterday and they offered $19k even! Apparently I was a bit too critical on the condition as the guy said it looks and shows extremely well, especially coming from a 2-child household. I also specifically asked about taxes and they confirmed I would not have to pay since they're a dealership buying directly from the bank. However, I will absolutely take your advice and also take it into the Buick dealership this weekend to see what they offer on it. Worst case scenario, sell it to CarMax and get a ~$2700 bank draft.

    Thanks again!
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
    Yeah, that's great.

Even better would be $18k at the dealer. You'd get $1700 equity PLUS save $1260 in tax on the new car (FL is 7%, right?).

I would bet if you work out a deal on the new car, and they come in below $18k on your trade, they'd be more than willing to come up to $18k just to keep you from becoming a "be-back" when you explain that you'll need to go sell your car to Carmax before signing for the new car.

Sorry, but I'm of no help pricing the heaviest Miata on the planet. Manheim does not include a PRHT option.

Out of what is listed, there is only 1 that had miles that low, it was reported as above average condition, red, and automatic, and it brought $14,600. The next 2 were red, 26k, stick and a grey, 28k, stick, which went for $13,900 and $12,300, respectively.

Well, the Buick dealer was only willing to offer $15.5 for the CX-9; I showed them the CarMax appraisal and they told me to RUN down there and sell it to them ASAP - which I did! They couldn't believe CarMax offered so much for it; they said their absolute max would be no more than $16. Very interesting to see the two so far apart...

Yes I did. I was very comfortable working with the sales staff and with the lease numbers. Though they may not have offered us as much on the trade-in, they were very understanding with our request to leave and sell it to CarMax first (it was actually the sales manager who suggested we leave to sell it after I showed him CM's offer). The only information they shared was that recent auction sales supported their offer (which is exactly what CM told me too); neither dealer shared the actual auctions with me. Guess they were looking at different auctions!

Owner is very pleased with the quality of repairs but looking to trade for something new. She is second owner, has been diligent with VW dealer maintenance, and expenses have caused her to reconsider keeping an aging VW. Good morning qbrozen! First & fore most, Happy Father's day! When you get a chance, can you give me a trade in number on this 2011 Porsche Boxster:

    2011 Porsche Boxster
Meteor Grey Metallic/Sand Beige Standard Leather (far from my 1st choice of color combination, but the contrast looks fantastic)/ Black Top
    2.9L H6
    RWD
    2 Door Convertible
    14K miles
PCM w/ Navigation, PDK, Hot Seats, Sound Pkg Plus, Wind Deflector, Auto Climate Control, XM Radio, PDK 3 Spoke Sport Wheel w/ Shift Paddle
    Westchester County, NY
Tires are probably 50% worn (they are original)
    Interior is 10/10
Exterior is a 9/10 (The car is hand washed weekly whether it needs it or not)
There is about to be some very minor paint work done. His wife backed into the left rear corner with her GL 450. It needs a heat gun and a very careful respray.

His lease is up in September and he wants to see if he has a few dollars in equity so maybe he can trade in (and avoid disposition fees) and pocket a few dollars.

Thanks as always for your help! The color wasn't even on his radar, but it was the cheapest Boxster at the time on leasetrader with the PDK.

Good morning, Qbrozen. Allow me to echo the Happy Father's Day, to you and all other fathers who might be reading this.

I'm interested in recent auction numbers for the following car:

    2008 Passat
2.0T (2.0 liter turbocharged gas engine)
    DSG transmission
    approximately 96k miles
    located in Houston, TX

I know the owner, this has been dealer serviced, never wrecked, and has nearly new Michelin tires. This has the newer model 2.0T with the timing chain, not the belt. I looked around online, and it would appear there is no expensive 100k service looming on the horizon, as happens with so many other makes and models.

In addition to the auction values, I would appreciate your (and others) opinions about what I should offer to a friend to buy this car outright.

No idea on the value, but make sure the DSG has been serviced every 40k on that one. The last major service (spark plugs, air filter) should have occurred at 60k and the next one is 120k.

    Coming in late here...

Head gasket failure wasn't the worst thing on Northstars. The early ones ALL would develop what they call The Northstar Oil Leak. These engines would leak at the seal where the two halves of the block mated.

Fixing that required pulling the engine...a NASTY job and taking the engine apart. A buddy had an estimate of 4500.00 to fix his. He had the job scheduled when a delivery truck broadsided him the following week and totaled his Cadillac.

I've heard, they "fixed" the oil leak problem around the 2000 model year but I'm not sure if they really did.

No, they didn't all leak. I owned a 1998, for about 4 years, went from 30k miles up to 120k miles before the head gaskets failed and I junked it. Later on, I owned a 1999 for about 3 years, went from 60k miles up to 92k miles before it was totaled in an accident. Neither one ever leaked any oil.

I have talked to people who had the oil leak you describe, and I have read of others over in the Cadillac forums (not here on Edmunds). From what I have been told / read, the oil leak was never catastrophic. The worst I heard of was about one quart per thousand miles, which could make a small mess on your garage floor, but was absolutely not catastropic.

It cost roughly the same to fix the oil leak as it did to repair the head gaskets, due to the fact that pulling the engine was a necessary first step for either repair. And the flat rate to R&R the engine was about 40 hours.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342

Well, of course, I'm sure they didn't ALL leak. I did have a Cadillac dealership mechanic tell me that given enough miles they would, in fact, leak and I'm sure some leaked worse than others did.

My friend's DeVille that he loved dearly started leaking around the 80,000 mile mark and eventually it leaked so bad he had to be careful where he parked the car so he wouldn't mess up someone's driveway.

We also had a former Cadillac salesman come to work at our store and before making a bid on a northstar trade, they would insist on putting it on a rack to see if it had started to leak. I remember him saying that on an older Cadillac or one with a lot of miles. that fixing the oil leak or replacing the head gaskets could effectively total the car.

Now, when you say 40 hours to R&R the engine I assume that included removing the heads or splitting the block to fix the oil leak?

Wow...most shops are at least 100.00/hr. Add the price of parts to that and all of the misc stuff they are bound to find like soggy motor mounts etc...yep, that WOULD certainly exceed the value on a lot of those!

Sorry, guys, I was away on business, then a short family vacation right after that.

    Let's see...

Touareg: They should have totalled it. I can only take a WAG at about $8k now. A clean one would be around $11k-$11.5.

Boxster: Probably would get dinged pretty hard for the damage and tires. I'd guess they'll hit it around $33k.

Passat: I'm guessing sedan, not wagon, and not Komfort or Luxury models? In addition to the 40k DSG services, you'll also want to know about the history on the cam follower. If the car is clean, it'd be about $6k on a trade. If the DSG has been serviced accordingly and the cam follower has been replaced at least once and inspected by the dealer for any damage ... $8k would be fair. If either of the above has been neglected, run away!

Volvo: wouldn't premium be leather rather than t-tec? Well, I think sans leather, you'd be looking at $18k trade. PP? How much do you need and how long are you willing to hold out? ;) You know the drill, about $1500-2k over trade should be your screaming point, but it doesn't hurt to ask for more.

Thanks Q! Nope, Leather on the C30 was a separate option - Premium was climate control, dual power seats, fog lights (I think); Cold weather was heated front seats, rain sensing wipers, headlight washers etc.

Spot on with what I was expecting to here.

The dealers up my way don't seem to want to play ball, so I think the C30 lives to see another....week(ish)?

Yes, it is a sedan, and it has been dealer serviced, never wrecked, one owner, clean. I'm leaning towards buying it, I really enjoy driving that turbo. It feels a lot stronger than the 200 horsepower it's rated at.

We are expecting her to be transfered today to a rehab facility closer to home. Thanks for asking.

I wouldn't just go by "dealer serviced" because there are many many reports of dealers not even knowing about the DSG service, and the cam follower is not a maintenance item, it is just a now known design flaw that can cause serious damage. VW did issue an extended warranty on the follower and any resulting damage, however. Still something you should have checked out if it is not part of the car's existing history. And, yes, it is a great engine. And it is underrated, in typical German fasion. According to my iPhone app (so take it for what its worth), my GTI was putting out 197 to the wheels bone stock, which would be more like 220-230 at the crank.

    Hello experts,
Erstwhile lurker - dropped off about 6 years ago - just about when Terry did :-(

Any of you have info about auction numbers in the Toronto GTA area. I do believe there's a Mannheim auction somewhere around here...

Anyway, I'm looking to buy one of these 3 - in the Toronto area.
Thoughts. Any info about the model/years would also be appreciated.

Note: all mileage is in KMs, and asking prices are in CDN dollars.

Wow!!! That's very good info. Thanks qbrozen.

Seems like Eastern US prices are very much in line with prices here in torontoland.

Seems incredible - when you consider the Ultra Prem RX listed for 62K + TTL when new - a good 20% more so than in the US.

    Thanks again!!

Touareg: They should have totalled it. I can only take a WAG at about $8k now. A clean one would be around $11k-$11.5.

Thanks Q, my friend is still keeping options open on trade-in but she's been wondering why they didn't just total it. Oh well, now it's time to decide whether to keep it until something really expensive (and uninsured) happens. Thanks again. :shades:
