I would like to know how much to expect for a trade in on my 2001 Lexus IS300. Here are the details:
    -Purchased Feb '01
-Options: Everything but heated seats and moonroof
    -Miles: 19000
    -Interior: Mint
-Exterior: A few bumps and bruises. I have a door ding on both the driver and passenger front door. Additionally, I have a scratch along the right rear bumper. There are also a very small paint chips on the hood. I brought it into an auto body shop, and I got an estimate of $1600 of work. Otherwise, the paint is in great condition.
-Tires: Brand new. A few scratches on the chrome wheels (included in estimate).

-I'm hoping to get between $23K and $24K for it based on the Blue Book and Black Book values. Is that reasonable? Please e-mail me at jleo_ndirish@cox.net. Thanks.

    ... Good morning ..!

19k huh ... miles are ok, for the time you have owned it.

    Color ..?

What body shop do you go to ..? $1,600 ..? just get Dr. Ding to fix the few dents and touch-up the few scratches by a pro, and all should be ok. .. the big killer here is, No slider .. Ouch.

You should be in and around the high $22's on a trade...

    Terry.

........ Hey, you need to keep up with all the stuff around here ...

Bill just got back from going to the OZ Fest and the Vauxenslobbin Conference in England .. I'm sure he will update you ..!

...... The miles are low for the year .. plus you have all the right stuff, slider, leather, spoiler, Xtra paint, etc ..

You should be in and around the ultra high $15's, maybe the ultra low $16's on a trade if, it's a real nice one, clean, no meteorite hit's and no invasions from the guy in the clown outfit.

If you decide to go down Retail Rd. . . I would start it up at $17,950 and you should see the low, to mid $17's .. easy.

    Terry.

Terry, thanks for the response. The color is blue. So, do you recommend that I bring it in as is, or see what I can get done on the car before? Thanks for the tips.

    Learned Friends,
First up, thanks for the #s for my fleet and the laughs. Das Boot Motors my foot! [Bill: I'm sorry to hear about your affliction (V'halls). Goodness gracious...]

On my way to work today, I saw this at a Pontiac Dealer:
    '02 Sienna LE
white, 34k miles, couple tiny door dings and scratches, otherwise clean.
4 new tires, really cheap ones. Basic LE equipment; XV package with quad seats, but no side bags, no alloys, no CD changer. Works for me. I didn't want white, but in the flesh, so to speak, it's OK. Some little voice keeps telling me 'rental rental rental'. I've copied down the VIN: 4T3ZF13C42U415855.

What say you? Many thanks as always,

Mathias, the 34k miles on an '02 is more than a bit worriesome to me, I'd agree with your guess that this was a rental. Run a CarFax if you're the least bit interested.

    Hi,

We've got a 97 Jetta GL (cloth interior, AC, automatic, AM/FM/Cassette, power locks, sunroof, rear spolier) that is a theft recovery. It was retitled in Vermont and given a new VIN (VT followed by six numbers). The car was purchased at auction two years ago at about a 35% discount from blue book. We're looking to trade-in on a new car, but have conflicting information.

One dealer, who immediately spotted the irregularity in the title, has told us that he won't touch it. Said no reputable used car dealer would buy it or sell it. Another dealer never even broached the subject of the title irregularity, and offered us about the blue book value (of course he was offering the Accord at invoice, and he's getting a $1250 dealer incentive).

So I have one dealer saying nobody should touch it, another saying he'll give me a decent trade-in for it (roughly what we paid two years ago). Is the second dealer either blind and doesn't realize the impact of trying to resell the retitled car or just desperate to sell the Accord? Or is the first dealer being overly cautious?

    Thanks.

It was a rental... Out of Boca Raton. Sold at auction in the Midwest in May.

Carfax is otherwise clean on it.

They prolly got every bit of $18K plus certification in it, but I think as long as they have had it $19K ought to buy it.

    Like Terry said..

Volvo S80 2.9. Performance of that car is similar to the others you are looking at...

Best bang for the buck IMO.

    Hmm

Needs rubber ($300 for the pair)

    Otherwise clean? No Paintwork?

It does have awfully low miles, Black isnt too bad in Dallas...

    $13,500 is my number..

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Yeah, that is a lotta miles.

    $3K.. perhaps $3,500.

If nothing else works, call DAB International in Wake Forest, NC and see what they'd pay for it.

Wow.. that is a lotta miles.

Car is worth, reality-wise, about $2,000-2,500 I am afraid..

    Good to see you.

    I am surprised. That's a pimpmobile!

It should trade in around $17K, but try $22K on a private.. see what happens... sometimes private parties will pay for mods that dealers will not.

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    OUCH!

120K on a 98? Sister lives in Tampa and Commutes to Jacksonville? :)

    Seriously, this is a $2,500 trade-in piece.

If it were me (It will be hard to retail, even for the $4K that it's worth, so ask $4,750) I'd take 20 digi pics, throw it on eBay, start it at $1 and watch it break $4,500

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm..

Probably worth about $23,500 across the block and $26K as "get" retail.

    Dealer or private?

Miles dont scare me on a Lexus, just look it over carefully... And also look at a 2000 CALENDAR YEAR production 4.0 Jag S-Type

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    You not gonna like me.

V40s are, unfortunately, about as stiff as bricks.

    Ths is a $15K trade-in, and $17,900 in the paper, grab $16,800++

    Sowwy...

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm...

    Volvo is worth $5K as a trade, +/- $300ish

Acura is worth $23,500ish across the block, figure they got $24K in it at the store, $500 to make it retail ready, $500 for the warranty...

Start at you car plus $20K, but your car and $22K is probably closer to realistic I would think. But do ask! :)

My Dad didn't want to wait for a private sale, so he shopped it around. Sounds like he did pretty well. He wanted to do everything in one day. The Lexus dealer offered $16k, the 1st Chrysler dealer offered $17.5k, and the 2nd Chrysler dealer (Ricart) offered $18.5k so he sold it to them. Too bad he owed $22k. He sold his '95 Caddilac for $8k, and got a good end of the month deal on a 2002 Lexus LS430. (They came down about $4k - right in line with Edmund's TMV.) I'm taking him to pick it up tonight. Thanks for your help.

I don't know if the Honda dealer knows the Jetta has a salvage title. He didn't ask, and I didn't volunteer. He did get the (very unusual) VIN (that screamed out to the other dealer) though, on a form they had me fill out, and he drove the car.

The car's black and has 45k miles. It's been in northern VA for two years, since we purchased it.

Thanks for any advice you can provide!

...for the information on the Sienna.
$19k, eh? With new ones going for under $23k? Oyoyoy! And off to the Toy store I go.

Anyone in the market for a POS '92 Aerostar? The air is cold... :-)

I have a 1993 Cadillac Sedan DeVille with less than 87,000 original miles. Gun metal blue exterior with beige leather interior. Exterior is in very good condition (no rust), interior is good as well, no burns or anything and it has never been smoked in. It is loaded: Leather, AC, PS, PB, PW, PL, Delco/Bose Premium Stereo, Alloy Wheels, Heated outside mirrors, Traction Control, Automatic 4-speed, Power Seats, Auto Load-level system, Anti-Theft, Speed Sensitive Steering, Speed Sensitive Suspension, and a trailer hitch. Everything still works! 12,000 miles on the brakes, tires, battery and rebuilt transmission. The exterior has a few minor dings and scrapes, but nothing that can't be buffed out. The paint is original and in great condition, never been in an accident, not even a fender bender.

Realistically, what can I expect to get for this car on a trade for another used vehicle? I'm talking real dollars, not just a number off the inflated sticker price. If this helps you, I am looking to trade it in for a 1998 or later Ford Explorer or Chevy Blazer with a net selling price of around $15,000. Please let me know your honest opinion of its value. The NADA book estimates its Average Trade-in Value at $5,350. Is that accurate or do you have a different opinion? Please let me know ASAP and thank you for your help in advance!

...... Good Morning -- thanks for a good description and for stopping by ...

You don't have to worry about any inflated prices here .. that's why they call it "Real-World Trade-In Values".

NADA is a lot more accurate on the "retail" side -- But, when it comes to the "real deal" trade values, they sometimes can be off by 10/20%+ depending on the vehicle, time of the year, geographic area, color, miles and options, etc. ...

So, if your Caddy is knee deep in rubber .. is "jam-up", looks and drives like a 98 and needs -0- ..and.. you can hang beef on the inside cuz' the air will blow you out. No critters living in the back seat since 95 .. then you should be in and around that $3,0/$3,5 on a trade-in (Real Money) -- if it needs a this and a that and a Partridge in a pear tree, start deducting.

$5,300 is more of a retail asking price off the street ... sorry.

    ..... Hi Q how are you ..?

You did well with Ricart, I have done quite of bit of business with them in the last year or so, buying and selling. They are aggressive, and are not afraid to step up to the pump ... You did well.! He also did Reeaall well on the Caddy.!

Your dad will love that GS430, I'm driving one now and I enjoy it, plus it holds lot's of golf bags .. I could have sold him mine, it only has 4,400 miles .. l.o.l...

    Enjoy ..*

I'm doing well - hope you are too. Actually, my Dad did all of the work on this one. Dad got the LS430. Lots of cool gadgets, but I like the styling of my '99 better. Turns out they came down about $6k (on a Custom), but still way out of my budget. The Caddy only had 45k miles on it. The guy was very happy to pay $8k for it.

First off, you guys do a great job at informing us novices about what to really expect for our used tin--keep up the good work.

Anyway, I am going to the dealers in a few months for an 03' and would want to know what my used car will be worth at trade-in. When you quote a price, how long does that number stay current, a week, month etc...

I know this is hard to judge but, a little knowledge like this can go along way!

    Thanks!

    Hey,

I've been browsing TH for a while now and I'm impressed with the advice I've seen. I'm interested in buying my first car in the next year or so (no rush, got the parents vehicles for now). I just have a couple questions.

For starters this is what I want to buy, a 2001 Hyundai Tiburon SE, I'm flexible on the options and I'll take almost any colour. So my only restriction is that its not a common model here in Winnipeg.

I have found 2 2001 SE models at a Hyundai dealer for $18,000 CDN (one has a CD player, the other has ABS). I have found multiple 97-99 models, but all those I checked out were sold or is poor condition.

This is my main question, how much might I expect to grind off of that price? Considering that the 2003 models have come out, with new colours and a convertable model coming out next year, I was hoping that by waiting the price will drop significantly.

I'm trying to be the best prepared I can, but what recommendations can you give me (as a first time buyer) to make my experience the easiest. I will be bringing my dad along for negotiations.

Any other comments? Thanks for any help you guys can give me, its appreciated.

I'm looking at a very clean 1999 Lincoln Nav. It has 80K miles on it which is mostly highway miles. It comes with 3 TV's, Playstation II, upgraded wood trim inside, computer chip for extra power, dual exhaust, nice 20" rims and more. Where would you place the value for purchase? If maintained good, how many miles can I expect out of this engine?

I have a '99 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 2WD with 73,000 miles. It has the SOHC V-6. It is medium wedgewwood blue. There are a few dings on the side from car doors. Otherwise the paint is in good shape. The windshield has a small crack from a rock. It was patched and hasn't spread since it happened 2 years ago. Good rubber. The floor mats are brand new. It has the premium sound. The display on the radio is out, but the radio works fine.(I don't think it's fried, maybe shorted because it will come on sometimes). I need to see if it can be fixed, but is it worth it? The car is in good shape all around except for what I mentioned. I will be trading it in for a 2002 Explorer in Atlanta (30080). It also has the optional trailer tow package. What's a good trade in value? Should I think about retail since I'm in such a large market? Thanks a million. - John

Twenty inch rims are just great.
    Til they get stolen.
Or they get bent on the first pothole you hit. Or when they get damaged on a curb, or the chrome gets pitted by salt or road debris.
Barring all that, they're fine until you have to take out a second mortgage to buy new tires.

We talked about loaded '00 Expy's EB 4x4 slider 33k mi., etc. running around 24k-25k retail

    and a low/avg mi. loaded '00 2wd Navigator around $26k retail, 4x4 in the $29k retail range

    How bout a '99 Nav 2 or 4 wd?

Also, what do you think of the Escalades in '99/'00?

Also what about '00 Suburban loaded lthr/slider etc., 2 or 4 wd?

I haven't driven one, although I've driven the pre'00 Tahoes and '00/'01 Tahoes, I understand the Escalade was kind of a me-too luxoSUV in '99 and '00, skipped a yr and then reintroduced for '02 with better reviews. I guess I'm curious because I have been seeing a few more Escalades in my area than Navigators and seen asking prices well below that of a Nav. (comparing 4wd only of course, and I've seen some more suburbans than tahoes, I'm just trying to weigh my options here I guess.

Although I think I found a reasonable LM dlr, he hasn't had my color/condition in yet, and as an update, the other dlr RAISED his asking price on his '00 blk/gry 2wd nav by $1800, I couldn't resist sending the internet guy an email noting that I offered his mgr a cash price on that truck almost a month ago, and was amazed that his Navigigator had appreciated almost $2k since then.

No slider, 2wd, does have a/c seats, blk/gry Asking price at time of posting $33,895 ..... Asking price 2 months ago when dlr originally posted $31,995....lowest price after short test drive, and be back drive, $30,9xx

Anyway, I've found some stuff, but I'm either too late or it's high mile, or in the case of some Expy's bad condition, that's why I am asking about other models too while I'm looking. Thanks guys,

    Karz

But, it has 125,000 miles. It is in good shape, the carpet is the only feature that has some stains - everything else looks good.(New transmission/brakes/tires)Any info would be greatly appreciated.
