How can someone have been able to sit in a 2004 Solara already?
  • webguysterwebguyster Member Posts: 434
Not implying Toyota Sienna is bad, rather that I do not take what Consumer Reports says as seriously as many other do. That was before the Toyota sludge threads, and I still do not value their opinion, based on my experience.

Ok, how about some details about your experience in the '04 Solara? Where, when, how, what's it like, etc., etc?
  • cunnrcunnr Member Posts: 9
My parking brake light will periodically come on for a few seconds while I am driving and then go off. Sometimes this will happen 3 or 4 times. Usually happens when the car is still warming up. Anyone else experience this or have any thoughts. thanks

I took part in some market research that involved comparing 4 Coupes ...

    The 2003 Chrylser Sebring Coupe
    The 2003 Accord Coupe
    The Monte Carlo SS

    and

one that I had NEVER laid eyes on before ...

    The new Solara Coupe.

Exterior: like i said b4, it looks like a 2 door ES300 with funky organic roundish tailights.

Interior: very upscale, watchface instruments with weird pods (3 of em) on top of the center dash for time, temp, and *erk* radio.

Engine: their upping the ante a bit with a 3.3 or 3.4 (can't remember) V6 with ~240 HP (to compete with Accord)

No mention of 5 speed manual.

they had one on display to sit in a play with.

They also had photos of the 4cyl, sport and convertible.

What else u want to know?

Thanks. Some dials in the center--like the Echo & Avalon (trip computer)? Any word on when it will be available?

now that we are onto new subjects... glad to see the new Soderbergh film is about our cars! anyone think there will be prominent product placement?

Me thinks somebody needs to actually read it before posting anything else. I'm pretty sure there is something in there that will get the last post deleted (and probably this one for referencing it).

Your rants and insulting posts would be a lot easier to read if you turned off the caps lock.

Thanks. Do me a favor too. This is a fascinating discussion but I know it will be deleted as soon as Mr. Shiftright looks back in on us. Since I'm going to be away from my computer until Friday afternoon, could you e-mail these posts to me at sclifford@kjtoyota.com? This is very entertaining.

    Check your brake fluid resovoir!

I had a similar problem that resulted in having to replace the brake light switch -- different make/model, but it may be a possibility.

Rumors spread much faster than truth on the internet.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
There were some carefully documented cases presented, with photos and service receipts, but not a lot. We did see a few really gummed up engines though, for whatever reason.
  • dgraves1dgraves1 Member Posts: 414
"... for whatever reason." being the crux of the issue.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yes, exactly, the causes remain very cloudy because there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the problem. I always suspected a complex set of variables that occasionally intersected rather than an inherent "defect" that one could count on to occur regardless of driver, climate, driving conditions, etc.

It's a good thing for anyone who has/had any concern, that Toyota stepped up with an 8 year unlimited milage sludge policy. If there really were no problem, would they have done this??? Too loaded of a question, I believe.

  • dgraves1dgraves1 Member Posts: 414
Well, I don't know about that logic, duckshooter. That would say that Hyundai, Kia and VW offereing longer warrantees would imply that they don't really have reliability problems. I'm not saying the sludge problem is a real issue, just that the fact that Toyota offered an extended warranty is not necessarily evidence that they don't think there is a problem.
  • webguysterwebguyster Member Posts: 434
Apparently there is a problem, or the company would not have sent two SPA (Special Policy Adjustment) letters, adjusted their policy for "specific" vehicles, and changed there engine design. The issue is not just with the 97-01 engines, but I believe back to the 1993 engines, according to the AERA TSB. Their explanation was less mysterious, rather to the point, and by coinsidence Toyotas redesign prevents the pooling of oil. This was the "staple" engine, or as my company may call it, their "core" engine, for Toyota/Lexus, so why the improvements, to prevent a specific problem??? There were no performance gains, by changing the design. Although I do not believe this will become an issue for me, if I were told about this potential problem at the point of sale, I would have walked out, and wrote my check elsewhere.

... if you hadn't angrily bought the car outta spite, and in doing so bought a lemon, odds are you would have done more research and bought something else anyway...

and once again, to address any lurkers - an open question: anyone here in this forum have a sludge problem? i have almost 46K on my 2000 SE V-6, with regular oil changes by both the dealer and other shops, and have had no such problem.

since i tend blame unknowledgeable consumers/drivers, i'll relay this unrelated anecdote: last year, while shopping for a PS2, i struck up a conversation with a guy who claimed he had just gotten a late-model Cadillac. i was rather shocked at his proud demeanor when he claimed he changes his oil every 20,000 miles (just like the manual says!).

    oy vey...

.. on 1999 Solara V-6 and no sludge in any of the cars sold at local dealership.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Let's not open up the sludge issue anymore, okay? It's been talked to death, and then exhumed a couple of times and re-talked to death, and then molecularly re-arranged and again talked to death.

you can read all about Sludge in the Archives, please let's not re=hash it anymore beyond what we've noted here.

    Thank you

I did not bring it up, somebody else did back in the previous, now missing arguments!

I did not buy my car out of "spite", I paid it off, possibly to "spite" the greedy credit guy that gave my 11%interest!

A couple weeks ago, when someone asked for a comparison of Solara v. Sebring ragtop, I said here that my sister was very happy with her '01 Sebring convertible.

Said sister just told me she is not pleased about the Sebring's somewhat rough ride and the wind noise at cruising speeds (which may be a problem with most convertibles, dunno).

Just trying to set the record straight.

After losing my much beloved '89 Supra to a cretin attacking from astern, a '00 5-speed V-6 solara was purchased as a replacement.

CR was (and remains) really positive about the vehicle. With ample reason. Solara (mine) runs quietly, efficiently (I calculated 35 mpg Twin Falls to Sacramento last year), and - in a straight line (at a constant speed) - is almost without peer. However - and here is my (personal) pet peeve): the car is boring to drive, (ain't got no sole), bobbing and bouncing when the road/driving style turns from the straight and narrow. But it's a good buy....if one hadn't driven a Supra 125,000 mile prior...ez

At 41,000 miles my Michelin Energys< tires >have been balding& I am faced with a descision. Replace them with the same tires, around $140 per tire + that other stuff people pay for when they replace a tire, or change to a different brand. Although the tires have given a quiet ride, they are terrible in snow, and not too great in the rain. Has anyone who lives in a multi season climate changed to a different brand with better results. My research thus far, says that the Michelins are best, come out of the mold nearly perfect, and are the most quiet. I frequently drive rental cars, and do not notice that the tires on the rental cars to be very noisy, say, compared to the Michelins. Any suggestions???

Has anyone heard that Toyota had an in house recal on the 99 solara for problems with the fuel injectors or idle? My mechanic told me to go back to Toyota and demand it be fixed. Any advice?

    Thanks.

We need more details. Have not heard anything here! Do you have the 4 or 6 cylinder???? Cliffy, you know anything about it???

It's not related to this, is it???

I have an '03 SLE. Can anyone tell me why the A/C ALWAYS comes on no matter what temp I set the ACC at and there is virtually no humidity?
  • automophileautomophile Member Posts: 780
    Hi, hud11622

I am assuming that your Climate Control is the same as previous years, and in other Toyota products.

If so, When in "Auto" mode, the A/C will always be on, so that the unit is ready to heat OR cool the car as needed.

If you want heat or fan only, turn OFF "Auto" by pressing the "A/C" button to turn off the A/C and set the temp where you want it. It will still maintain the temp for you as long as A/C is not needed.
  • webguysterwebguyster Member Posts: 434
And, don't forget that is a good feature to keep the A/C seals from drying out, but running the compressor. Not good on milage, but saves the compressor, down the road.

My parking brake light goes on for no reason.

It lasts for about 30 seconds then disappears, on and off at different times.

    What's the problem? The sensor?
  • suvshopper4suvshopper4 Member Posts: 1,110
A fellow RAV-er says this happened when their brake fluid was low.

(The on-and-off may have to do with the level changing due to acceleration and braking causing the fluid to shift, setting off the sensor.)

    Hope this helps.
  • hud116222hud116222 Member Posts: 46
Automophile and Webguyster: Thanks for the reply on the ACC. It seems a bit inconvenient to me, but I guess I can push that A/C button. :))
  • squinty25squinty25 Member Posts: 30
To decon: Yes, my parking brake light went on just last month, and it was due to low brake fluid. I had it filled and it's no longer on.

I oddly noticed, though, that it only went on when I made the same left turn on this same street that I do every morning...so maybe as the other poster mentioned it does have to do with the way the fluid is shifting.
  • squinty25squinty25 Member Posts: 30
I don't normally join these message board groups, but I'm at the end of my rope.

Last month, I got my transmission fluid changed at an oil change center chain (big mistake). Four days later, my check engine light goes on in the middle of my commute down the highway. Like I should have in the first place, I brought it to the dealer for diagnosis, and this is the runaround I got: I kid you not, 6 times I've brought it there, and the problem is STILL not solved:

Visit 1: "The sensor is giving us a trans code. But we can't find anything wrong with it. Sure it isn't the gas cap? We've cleared the code. Call us if it comes on again."

Visit 2 (3 weeks later): "We can't find anything wrong with it right now. Sure it isn't the gas cap? We cleared the codes but you'll have to bring it again for further diagnosis."

Visit 3 (1 week later): "You're going to need an E-shift solenoid. We don't have the part in stock. We'll order it and you'll have to come back when it's in."

Visit 4 (1 week later): "The wrong part was ordered. Sorry. We'll give you a rental car so you can leave it here overnight." [I was forced to pay for that rental by the way.]

Visit 5 (1 day later): E-shift solenoid was replaced. Obviously did no good because it was on again the next night. Of course when I called, even after all these visits, I was asked again if my gas cap was on tight enough. I proceeded to roll my eyes.

Visit 6 (3 days later): I have NO idea what they did because I never got an invoice and nothing was explained to me. But the light was off. My guess is, they simply took a dead bug out from underneath my hood because the light came on 5 days later.

It has now reached the point where the service center has to consult with Toyota to resolve this. Almost a week and I haven't heard from them. I already got chewed out by the service advisor for bringing in the customer relations manager into this "unnecessarily" (likely because I'm a girl in my 30s who didn't walk in with a man). He thinks he has this under control. As you can see, he doesn't.

Can anyone tell me if they've had this repetitive problem, and how it was eventually solved? I've read here some people saying it was simply a short in their sensors and they needed to be replaced. Of course, I had brought this up with the dealer from the start and they pretty much shrugged it off.

    Any help is appreciated!! :)

Cliffy1 over on the Camry forum has advised that as of December, orders for the Camry V6 will be coming with a new 5-speed transmission. I asked him if this would apply to the Solara and to the I4 but I am still waiting for a reply. This could be the same transmission that is in the Lexus ES300. A larger V6 is also rumored in the Camry and whether the 5-speed trans comes together with the new V6 is unknown but it would make sense.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The 5 speed auto will not be in the Solara this year. Just the Camry sedan.
  • webguysterwebguyster Member Posts: 434
Yikes, you may want to change dealerships for service. What year Solara do you have?

Years ago, I had a beater that always had a check engine light come on regardless of how many sensors went bad, and were replaced, with no apparent problem, or a problem that could be determined. My solution was a piece of chewing gum, to cover the check engine light!

Is there a new Solara coming out, Cliffy? Any hint what it might look like as of yet???
  • squinty25squinty25 Member Posts: 30
Webguyster - I used to actually rave about this dealership until now. Even the shuttle drivers who take me to and from work are appalled at how often I've been there.

And, yes, there was a quip made by the manager that I should just put a piece of black tape over the light in the meantime. Hysterical, isn't he?

Has anyone contacted Toyota Corp. directly either by phone or e-mail, and if so, has it gotten you anywhere? My light is now off for four days now, but I'm giving it two weeks. If it goes back on again and I still don't get a call from these guys, I'll have to take matters into my own hands.
  • silversolarasilversolara Member Posts: 113
had a similar prob - dealership claims the fix was replacing a cracked gas cap. by the way, which Toyota do you own?

also - try posting to Camryman.org - you'll need the year/model, and the engine type.
  • stoosh95stoosh95 Member Posts: 14
I had the pleasure of sitting in and reviewing the all new '04 solara a few weeks ago.

It looks like a lexus ... a 2 door ES300 with organic tailights ala SC430.

Interior is upscale with multiple textures and colors with 3 central pods in the center top dash for radio, compass and time.
