The security option's main feature is the key. It has an embedded chip that (in theory) the ignition will check for before starting. Wrong key, wrong code, car won't start.
BTW, I have already used the system's panic feature to scare away some college freshman away from the car and building where we were.
I got the security system with my Sentra SE only because it came with it, but after having it for awhile I'm glad it came with my car. I think it's worth the money.
Side note -- On my way to work this morning I saw a car in front of me and I could tell it was a newer Japanese compact, but couldn't quite place it. I thought to myself that it was a really nice looking car, and when I got closer to it I realized it was a 2000 Sentra! Don't see too many on the road and so I didn't immediately recognize it -- kind of a nice surprise.
braab -- welcome aboard.
IMO, the remedy is to assemble the cars somewhere other than Mexico. If you follow a large number of forums, you can see a relationship to Mexican assembly and higher assembly defects.

dealer) a 2000 Sentra GXE. The first time I drove it more than an hour the air conditioning went
out. This has been more than three weeks with no attempt to fix it. The dealer is waiting on Nissan
engineering for a fix.
I am totally discussed with Nissan. The dealer doesn't call me back and Nissan 800 Customer
Service doesn't tell me any thing I haven't told them. Except that no they will not postpone my
payments.
Got it for $17k through employee discount. Dealership would not have budged on MSRP of $18395. That sounds right.
Mine appears to have been the only one, or one a few, in the state of Ohio. Your info sounds correct.
BTW, I have had several offers by individuals to buy the car from me, 2 on the first day I had it. (It did not have temporary tags, either)
thanx,
David
has to pay full MSRP. Do your homework before you
go in. Do not let a Nissan dealer gouge you for
MSRP for any model Sentra. If you have to have
an SE, wait for another 6 months, you may be
able to get one at a better price. One would
think that Nissan dealers would've learned some
lessons in humility with slow to nil sales of the
previous gen. Sentra. Obviuosly not, according to
some of the posts.
If dealerships are doing this, go for a Corolla
or Civic (2000), it'd be money well spent. A word
of warning that the exact same thing will happen
with the 2001 Civic though.
I own two Sentras and would not have considered
paying anywhere near MSRP for either. Both have
been reasonably good, dependable transportation.
I have a feling that the popularlity of the new
model Sentra will go down as quickly as it's risen
once other redisned compacts make their debut.
I sat in the inside of the new Sentra, it is so much classier and comfortable. I will test drive one when i feel like bugging a daeler.
Is waiting 6 months worth the possible savings? For a patient person, I guess. But my old car was near death and had to be replaced.
need versus want. I just believe that waiting
until production catches up with demand would
profit everyone (except greedy dealers). I'll be
the first to admit that my wife and I bought her
95' Sentra GXE the first model year. It's been o.k. as per reliability but will never win any
beauty contests. My 97' GLE is the same body
with the addition of better trim and alloy wheels.
A step up, but definitely no Infiniti. It is
still quiet for a sub-compact though.
I suppose it remains to be seen if the new model
Sentra will remain as popular as now once the
new model Civic debuts and the Toyota Corolla
is redone (02' ?). I believe that for the forseeable future though, sales will be strong. It
just pains me to see potential customers get
taken to the cleaners and have to pay near or at
MSRP for what should go for no more than several
hundred over invoice.
Can anyone tell me if 13550 is a fair price or if anyone has been able to buy this car for less..thanks..
One thing that I don't understand is its depreciation. Why do Sentras depreciates faster than Corolla or Civic? Any ideas? Thanks.
I've posted same question for the Maximas as well.
Civics are too overpriced and too popular, Corollas aren't anything special.
Yesterday, I saw the first 2000 Sentra the dealership where I bought my car recieved. It was a black GXE with a wing. 2 girls were in it, and looked rather unhappy seeing my SE besides them.
Can't wait to pick it up on Fri. BTW, I paid $14,195 + tax, tags & title; it was the best price I could find.
Looked around a lot and this was the best economy sedan I drove. Great handling, good power with the 145-hp engine, close to 30 mpg in daily driving. Since the dealer had so many, evidently the word has not gotten out what a good car this is, at least not in this community of 200,000.
I preferred the SE, but liked the GXE almost as much. Drove a manual and could have opted for that rather than the auto. Don't pay MSRP for this Sentra. Shop around and you can certainly find a better deal.
I will be ordering a 2001 Sentra SE through autobytel.com but before I do I need some feedback from Sentra owners about a few things...
I will be getting the WHITE exterior color - so if I order it with mud flaps will the flaps be white as well? The 2001 brochure shows a "RADIUM" (silver) Sentra with black flaps.
Also, I want to order it with a cassette player as well as the 6 CD in-dash changer. The problem is that a picture in the 2001 brochure shows a stereo with the optional 6 disc in dash cd changer. The cd changer is in the little storage bin just below the stereo, but the rest of the stereo looks like the premium unit with a single cd player built in - does this make any sense? If this is how they come from the factory then where will they put the cassette player? Is the cassete player an either/or item with the 6 disc in dash cd changer unit?
I test drove a Sentra with the factory sunroof - but I found out that at 50 mph you start to get some wind noise from the sunroof when it is fully closed. I found out that if I close the interior shade of the sunroof the noise is gone. Does anybody know what I can expect at highway speeds in excess of 70 mph? Can anybody "test" for me the amount of wind noise with the shade closed/open at these speeds with the sunroof completely closed?
If there is much wind noise with the shade closed then I will not get the power sunroof option - I would rather hear Beethoven -:)
Also - has anybody purchased new through autobytel.com? A friend of mine ordered a Camry with them and the dealer who sold him the car told him that on an internet deal they have only one chance to make the sale - so they gave him all kinds of discounts - he was very happy with the purchase.
I know I have been long winded but hey it is a lot of money to spend on a new car and I would rather be safe than sorry. Thank y'all very much!
I've just purchased a radium (silver) Sentra SE w/ the performance package + sunroof...got the floor mats for free...total is $16,049 w/out tax and registration. They charged me a wopping $300.oo for advertisement fees!! They said it was a set price and they couldn't change it. I was a bit curious because isn't only suppose to be 1% of the msrp? and on top of that they added another $500 dollars for profit because of the supply and demand...does this sound right or did the dealer pull my leg?
Looks like I'll be seeing a lot more Sentras on the road now that everyone is buying them. The Nissan dealer also told me about the $300 advertising fee. Personally, I think its just another baloney fee that they factor into their profit margin. I bought my Jaded Green GXE w/auto, lux. pkg, conv. pkg & floor mats for $14,195 plus tax, title, tags etc... I think anything in that range is a good price.
Today was the first day I drove it to work. Lovely, responsive ride and handling.
Regarding Bulwinkle's dealer woes:
Drive down to the dealer & tell them you want your deposit back or a discount on a new 2001. Also, have them give you a time frame. I was told by a dealer that a Nissan factory order would take 2-10 weeks. If they're willing to deal get it from them in writing. Frankly, any dealer that treats you like that doesn't deserve your business and you should let them know you're more than willing to go elsewhere.
See Post #83.
On the rear side of the wheel opening, you should see 2 indentations, those are the pilots for the screws (self tapping) that the guards are attached with.
Installation required removing the wheels.
Took about 20 minutes, majority of that was jacking up the car with the spare jack.
I believe that if you had good credit, it was possible to get 2.9%/24mo, 3.9%/36mo.
