Obviously if you can afford ABS get it. The safety provided by it is all that matters.

The security option's main feature is the key. It has an embedded chip that (in theory) the ignition will check for before starting. Wrong key, wrong code, car won't start.

BTW, I have already used the system's panic feature to scare away some college freshman away from the car and building where we were.

If you have the money, get ABS. If you don't have the money, figure out a way to get it, then purchase the ABS option. ABS technology has been out for so long that it's a shame that anti-lock breaks are not standard on all cars, particularly for the safety they provide.

I got the security system with my Sentra SE only because it came with it, but after having it for awhile I'm glad it came with my car. I think it's worth the money.

Side note -- On my way to work this morning I saw a car in front of me and I could tell it was a newer Japanese compact, but couldn't quite place it. I thought to myself that it was a really nice looking car, and when I got closer to it I realized it was a 2000 Sentra! Don't see too many on the road and so I didn't immediately recognize it -- kind of a nice surprise.

    braab -- welcome aboard.

I have a 2000 Sentra with just about every option and it's a great car (extra keys for the immobilizer security system are $90 each). I looked at a lot of cars before I chose this one. My only complaint is that it is an awful car to fuel. It takes 10 minutes to fill it up because the filler nozzle keeps shutting off. I have to keep clicking the nozzle until gas spills out (only way to know when it's finally full). I took it to a full service station this week to see if the attendant knew any special tricks. He said he hoped that I wouldn't stop in there too often. I felt for a kink in the filler neck and the tube is very small in diameter. Has anyone else had this problem? I'll complain to the dealer when it goes in at 3000 miles.
  • tailplanetailplane Member Posts: 7
I seem to remember another post with a person who had the same problem. It ended up being a kinked filler neck. I can't remember what the remedy was.

IMO, the remedy is to assemble the cars somewhere other than Mexico. If you follow a large number of forums, you can see a relationship to Mexican assembly and higher assembly defects.

    Regards,
    Mark.

That fuel thing is a recall. When you do complain to the dealer, he will gladly replace your fuel tank for free. It's some sorta valve or something in there causing it. It was a problem with the early production models. Just tell the dealer and they will remedy it for you.

The Nissan Sentra has a known air conditioning problem. I just got (bought but it's sitting at the
dealer) a 2000 Sentra GXE. The first time I drove it more than an hour the air conditioning went
out. This has been more than three weeks with no attempt to fix it. The dealer is waiting on Nissan
    engineering for a fix.

I am totally discussed with Nissan. The dealer doesn't call me back and Nissan 800 Customer
Service doesn't tell me any thing I haven't told them. Except that no they will not postpone my
    payments.

I just recently bought a Honda Civic over the Nissan Sentra because two Nissan dealers I went to would not bargain. Go figure??? Are they that desirable? I had another Sentra and it ran great so I wanted a new one. But when I could save $0 on the Sentra, or $1600 on the Honda, the choice became clear quickly. Anyone else experience this?

Hi all, this is my first post on Edmunds...at my recommendation my mother just bought a 2001 Sentra SE, it is Granite with every option other then the 6 Disc Changer. The dealer didn't have any on the lot and hasn't been able to locate one the way we want it, so we ordered it. He says it should arrive in 4-6 weeks, does this sound correct? We only got $500 off MSRP here in NY, is that terrible compared to everyone else? Thanks for your help.
  • pickelfishpickelfish Member Posts: 5
smore, the reason you got $1600 off your civic( I assume its a 2000) is because honda is coming out with a new civic model for 2001. That means the dealer needs to clear out his inventory of 2000 civics and willing to give discounts. I live here in Tacoma Wa and the 2000-01 sentra se models are in demand which means most dealer will try to sell them at msrp or 2nd sticker. The 2000 civic is a great product and a good choice.

I purchased an SE 5speed with per.package in St. Paul, MN in June. paid $350.00 over invoice.
  • rberusrberus Member Posts: 25
got my 2000 sentra se (all options except 6 disc changer, same as yours), in heatwave 2 weeks ago.

Got it for $17k through employee discount. Dealership would not have budged on MSRP of $18395. That sounds right.

Mine appears to have been the only one, or one a few, in the state of Ohio. Your info sounds correct.

BTW, I have had several offers by individuals to buy the car from me, 2 on the first day I had it. (It did not have temporary tags, either)
  • luckylarluckylar Member Posts: 12
My daughter will graduate in June want to buy a car within two months. Like the Sentra 2001 with the Conv and Lux Pk. SE are nice but none in the Naperville, Ill area so dealers will not neg. How is the MPG on the Sentra vs Corolla.
  • luckylarluckylar Member Posts: 12
Also how do the cars compare. Quality/comfort/Highway driving/Safety/I am leaning to the Sentra and since I am paying what is the better car for the money.
  • kumar4kumar4 Member Posts: 1
I had been to my nearest Nissan dealer yesterday to check out Nissan Sentra SE 2001. I went for a test drive of the car... and liked it a lot. The sales rep. quoted $17,517 for all options except 6-disc changer (I am not sure whether it included floor-mats). He is ready to reduce $517 from his quoted price. After his reduction it will cost me $17,930 with taxes. But as i am graduating I will be able to get $500 discount, which obviously is a deal between the company and me. Can anybody who has bought/know about Nissan Sentra SE 2001 model suggest me what price would be a better deal on this car. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
  • geddy2112geddy2112 Member Posts: 2
Ok thanks, I feel we did ok on the price. We are looking forward to this car. My mother had a '91 G20, then leased a '96 G20, and loved them both. She was looking for something to buy now and hold onto for a while. We compared the SE with the new G20, and felt that the Sentra drove as well as if not better then the G20. We didn't feel the G20, while obviously more upscale, was worth about 6K more, so we went with the SE. I'm going to be in the market in about a year and will seriously consider the SE-R if it is out then.

Does anyone know if Inferno is a different color than Heatwave?
  • sloanesqsloanesq Member Posts: 60
I'd like to purchase a 2001 Sentra GXE w/ the ABS & side air bags. I plan to do a lot of driving for work and am very particular about protecting my hide as it is the only one I have. However, the dealer says to get this option I have to order it from the factory. Does anyone have any experience with ordering from Nissan? Are they as bad as GM? The dealer says it will take 2-10 weeks once I order. Does this make sense? I'd appreciate any feedback.

    thanx,

    David

As intriguing and nice as new Sentras are, no one
has to pay full MSRP. Do your homework before you
go in. Do not let a Nissan dealer gouge you for
MSRP for any model Sentra. If you have to have
an SE, wait for another 6 months, you may be
able to get one at a better price. One would
think that Nissan dealers would've learned some
lessons in humility with slow to nil sales of the
previous gen. Sentra. Obviuosly not, according to
    some of the posts.
If dealerships are doing this, go for a Corolla
or Civic (2000), it'd be money well spent. A word
of warning that the exact same thing will happen
    with the 2001 Civic though.
I own two Sentras and would not have considered
paying anywhere near MSRP for either. Both have
    been reasonably good, dependable transportation.
I have a feling that the popularlity of the new
model Sentra will go down as quickly as it's risen
once other redisned compacts make their debut.
  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
The 2000 is a world better jsut sitting in it, than the 1995-99's. A mature woman I know has a 1997 and it is so Deawoo-ish and nerdy, not to mention slow as a moped. The interior door panels feel like felt covered cardboard!

I sat in the inside of the new Sentra, it is so much classier and comfortable. I will test drive one when i feel like bugging a daeler.
  • rberusrberus Member Posts: 25
The previous generation Sentra's didn't sell because they were crap cars. I've waited for the redesign for quite some time to buy one.

Is waiting 6 months worth the possible savings? For a patient person, I guess. But my old car was near death and had to be replaced.
  • mckee4mckee4 Member Posts: 47
No argument on needing the car. I fully understand
need versus want. I just believe that waiting
until production catches up with demand would
profit everyone (except greedy dealers). I'll be
the first to admit that my wife and I bought her
95' Sentra GXE the first model year. It's been o.k. as per reliability but will never win any
beauty contests. My 97' GLE is the same body
with the addition of better trim and alloy wheels.
A step up, but definitely no Infiniti. It is
still quiet for a sub-compact though.
I suppose it remains to be seen if the new model
Sentra will remain as popular as now once the
new model Civic debuts and the Toyota Corolla
is redone (02' ?). I believe that for the forseeable future though, sales will be strong. It
just pains me to see potential customers get
taken to the cleaners and have to pay near or at
MSRP for what should go for no more than several
    hundred over invoice.

Hi- I am shopping around for a 2000 Sentra XE- Automatic, xe package and floor mats--
Can anyone tell me if 13550 is a fair price or if anyone has been able to buy this car for less..thanks..
  • rberusrberus Member Posts: 25
well, don't feel for me, i recieved the benefits of having a relative work for the dealership. :)
  • luckylarluckylar Member Posts: 12
Ok my wife deceided on the Sentra. Test drove the GXE. The dealers in the area(Naperville,Ill)have no SE. For all the added features and the better engine the SE sounds the way to go. My wife thought the GXE underpower. I will be in the Sarasota/Tampa Area if they have any. Might get a better price and they might be in stock. What are the prices I am looking at; SE with the perf pkg?
  • lawrenlawren Member Posts: 15
I'm in a market for a new car. Sentra is a great value. Its torque and HP cannot be matched by Corolla or Civic (except SI but not on torque) It seems like the sensible car to buy. Consumer Report recommends Sentra for its reliability as well.

One thing that I don't understand is its depreciation. Why do Sentras depreciates faster than Corolla or Civic? Any ideas? Thanks.

I've posted same question for the Maximas as well.
  • stevieweevystevieweevy Member Posts: 12
Your question is similar to mine. My belief at least in SO. Cal is so few of them can be found. I don't mean the se's, i mean any of them. I look for them all the time in hopes of asking owners how they like them, if they have had any problems. I think depreciation is a matter of supply and demand. There is no demand for them here or i would surely see them being driven by someone. So, to the few people that have bought 2000 sentras, I ask you, how do you like your cars? Would you buy them again? Are you sorry you didn't buy a corrola or civic? Your opinions will be greatly appreciated.

I have 1,500 miles on my se 5-spd with performance package. The car is very refined for its price range and of course handles very crisply. Some may not like the "stiff" ride of the SE. The 180W sound system is excellent in my opinion and blows anything away from Honda/Toyota even the new Civics are down in torque compared to the GXE engine. I'm sure I will get my first speeding ticket as it is extremely easy to hit 80 and not realize it. As for Toyotas and Civics I prefer not to be a lemming and am a bit of an individualist. I like it that I don't see a Sentra every 5 seconds. Those cars are very reliable and refined and that is all most people care about. That is why depreciation is lower. The Sentra should be just as reliable as the other 2. Nissans generally appeal to the driving enthusiast crowd. Make sure you test drive all 3 though.
  • nikecarnikecar Member Posts: 460
Ok, the Ferman nissan at 3 weeks ago didn't have any SEs (In Tampa). Courtesy Nissan had 2 I think, and Nissan of Brandon had 2, one of which was stick w/ perf package. the dealer said it goes for 17K plus tax. When are you coming down... I could give you the name of a salesguy I know at Courtesy Nissan. we went to school together...
  • rberusrberus Member Posts: 25
Quite happy with my 2000 SE w/performance package. It's well laid out, lots of storage spaces inside. Not to sure of the performance, only have 720 mi, but handling seems to be good.

Civics are too overpriced and too popular, Corollas aren't anything special.

Yesterday, I saw the first 2000 Sentra the dealership where I bought my car recieved. It was a black GXE with a wing. 2 girls were in it, and looked rather unhappy seeing my SE besides them.
  • sloanesqsloanesq Member Posts: 60
Just put a deposit down on the 2001 Sentra GXE w/auto, lux. pkg & conv. pkg. (& floor mats, natch). I tried out the Mazda Protege but just didn't like the ride. It handled wonderfully but had lots of noise and vibration. The GXE, IMHO, handled equally well but was far and away a smoother ride. Just perfect for the daily commute so I don't have to arrive feeling like I went through a blender.

Can't wait to pick it up on Fri. BTW, I paid $14,195 + tax, tags & title; it was the best price I could find.
  • omegaman1omegaman1 Member Posts: 2
Local dealer had a dozen or so GXEs, four SE's, two of them with manuals. I bought the SE auto in Blackout, not my first choice in color. None at the dealership had the ABS option. Got the car for $8 over the invoice price, albeit with a $200 ad fee which I felt was high.

Looked around a lot and this was the best economy sedan I drove. Great handling, good power with the 145-hp engine, close to 30 mpg in daily driving. Since the dealer had so many, evidently the word has not gotten out what a good car this is, at least not in this community of 200,000.

I preferred the SE, but liked the GXE almost as much. Drove a manual and could have opted for that rather than the auto. Don't pay MSRP for this Sentra. Shop around and you can certainly find a better deal.
  • luckylarluckylar Member Posts: 12
Went to Lokey about a 2 months ago. Didn't have any SE. My wife is thinking of 2 Sentra for the daughters for a better price. I can wait until Nov/Dec/Jan for more SE if they want I am not going MSRP because the dealer can get it. Went to a dealer a week ago he sold the one he had for full sticker. The infiniti is going for a V6 in the G20 next year. Maybe they are getting rid of the engine in the SE. It's the same engine that why it's hard to get. Sat. will bring the daughter to see a sentra. One saw it and liked it. But looking at a SE/auto/perf pk for one at least.
  • djones09djones09 Member Posts: 1
Went to a couple of dealers to purchase a new SE. The first one only had one, but it was an automatic. The second dealership had about 10, but only one had the options we were looking for. They wanted over $17,000 for it, but we manage to pay only about $15,000. I always pay less than MSRP. Believe me, they want to sell you a car, so never take their first or second offer. I have put 4,500 miles on it and so far everything is great. I especially like the power, handling and white face gauges. The car is a Granite color and I just tinted the windows. I am putting on 18" Enkei wheels with Yokohama Paradas. I also will be adding a rear sway bar, Intake, and exhaust from Stillen to bump up the horse power another 20HP. I have also adding PIAA Super White bulbs to the headlamps and fog lights. I like the fact that Nissan is finally stepping up. Everyone has a Civic or Corolla, I like the fact my Sentra is rare, right now.
  • nikecarnikecar Member Posts: 460
what was you out the door price before anything down?
  • omegaman1omegaman1 Member Posts: 2
For my 2000 Sentra SE it was $16,819 out the door with the floor mats and security ignition system as options. Our rather steep local sales tax was about $1100 of that.

Hello all of you happy people!

I will be ordering a 2001 Sentra SE through autobytel.com but before I do I need some feedback from Sentra owners about a few things...

I will be getting the WHITE exterior color - so if I order it with mud flaps will the flaps be white as well? The 2001 brochure shows a "RADIUM" (silver) Sentra with black flaps.

Also, I want to order it with a cassette player as well as the 6 CD in-dash changer. The problem is that a picture in the 2001 brochure shows a stereo with the optional 6 disc in dash cd changer. The cd changer is in the little storage bin just below the stereo, but the rest of the stereo looks like the premium unit with a single cd player built in - does this make any sense? If this is how they come from the factory then where will they put the cassette player? Is the cassete player an either/or item with the 6 disc in dash cd changer unit?

I test drove a Sentra with the factory sunroof - but I found out that at 50 mph you start to get some wind noise from the sunroof when it is fully closed. I found out that if I close the interior shade of the sunroof the noise is gone. Does anybody know what I can expect at highway speeds in excess of 70 mph? Can anybody "test" for me the amount of wind noise with the shade closed/open at these speeds with the sunroof completely closed?

If there is much wind noise with the shade closed then I will not get the power sunroof option - I would rather hear Beethoven -:)

Also - has anybody purchased new through autobytel.com? A friend of mine ordered a Camry with them and the dealer who sold him the car told him that on an internet deal they have only one chance to make the sale - so they gave him all kinds of discounts - he was very happy with the purchase.

I know I have been long winded but hey it is a lot of money to spend on a new car and I would rather be safe than sorry. Thank y'all very much!
  • allen2hallen2h Member Posts: 9
PS: Also, does anybody know if anything can be done about the buzz on the SE shifter? Thanx...
  • egg5egg5 Member Posts: 1
I purchased a Sentra SE w/ Perf. Pkg and 6 CD in-dash changer through autobytel.com. I got 1% over invoice and I was happy with the service. I don't have a sunroof so I can't test the wind noise, but mine sounds good @ 80 mph. The CD changer is exactly where you described it, I think it was dealer installed. Looking at the rest of the radio I don't know where they would put a cassette player. As for the buzz - the only way I can stop it is to not rest my hand there.
  • stevieweevystevieweevy Member Posts: 12
Only the xe comes with a cassette player and the others come with a CD player. Since I have like 50 cassettes and no CD's, I called the nearest autosound store that installs radios and so forth. I was told if i buy a car with a CD player, it is not possible to buy and have installed a separate cassette player. When I told the Nissan salesman I wanted a cassette player in the gxe, he said, "oh well". So, as of now , I haven't bought this car, oh well.

i have been waiting 5 months for a sentra se that was ordered for me in may...it has not come and i get no responses from the dealer as to why or when it is coming. the 2001 are now being advertised. my feeling is there is no way i should pay top dollar for a car that is the end of the year now. maybe i should bust there chops and tell them to give me a maxima from there lot for the same monthly payment of 280 a month...any thoughts..by the way the dealership has never returned a phone call of mine in five months, i always have to drive down there

Hi everyone!!! Just bought a new 2000 Sentra GXE, and have 200 miles, and rather like it much, my third new vehicle, my first new car. I had some credit problems, but Nissan got me 6.9 wheras all else got me 10, and my trade was 1000 and down for 1000, yikes, thats it. Needed a car for a long time and feel like I got more bang for the buck. No side airbags, but all else was loaded, for 13,161 plus tax and fees at 1500.00. I wanted the manual, and they were far and few. DID I do good or did I get slammed??
  • sentra4mesentra4me Member Posts: 2
    Hello All,
I've just purchased a radium (silver) Sentra SE w/ the performance package + sunroof...got the floor mats for free...total is $16,049 w/out tax and registration. They charged me a wopping $300.oo for advertisement fees!! They said it was a set price and they couldn't change it. I was a bit curious because isn't only suppose to be 1% of the msrp? and on top of that they added another $500 dollars for profit because of the supply and demand...does this sound right or did the dealer pull my leg?
  • sloanesqsloanesq Member Posts: 60
    Hi everyone,

Looks like I'll be seeing a lot more Sentras on the road now that everyone is buying them. The Nissan dealer also told me about the $300 advertising fee. Personally, I think its just another baloney fee that they factor into their profit margin. I bought my Jaded Green GXE w/auto, lux. pkg, conv. pkg & floor mats for $14,195 plus tax, title, tags etc... I think anything in that range is a good price.

Today was the first day I drove it to work. Lovely, responsive ride and handling.

    Regarding Bulwinkle's dealer woes:

Drive down to the dealer & tell them you want your deposit back or a discount on a new 2001. Also, have them give you a time frame. I was told by a dealer that a Nissan factory order would take 2-10 weeks. If they're willing to deal get it from them in writing. Frankly, any dealer that treats you like that doesn't deserve your business and you should let them know you're more than willing to go elsewhere.

I did not get one response to my post about mudguards. I sure would like some help. Thanks.
    See Post #83.
  • rberusrberus Member Posts: 25
just bought the rear splash guards for my se (the sill extensions take up space for the fronts), not to difficult to install, but it is kinda labor intenstive.

On the rear side of the wheel opening, you should see 2 indentations, those are the pilots for the screws (self tapping) that the guards are attached with.

    Installation required removing the wheels.

Took about 20 minutes, majority of that was jacking up the car with the spare jack. :(
  • jnordenejnordene Member Posts: 2
Does anyone know if the Nissan financing deals which were available for the 2000 Sentras are or will be available on the 2001 models?

I believe that if you had good credit, it was possible to get 2.9%/24mo, 3.9%/36mo.
  • sentra4mesentra4me Member Posts: 2
OVER HERE IN THE SILICON VALLEY THE 3.9%/60MO FINANCE RATES ONLY APPLY TO THE 2000 SENTRAS...I GUESS BECAUSE THEY'RE TRYING TO GET RID OF THE 2000'S AND TRYING TO MAKE MORE ROOM FOR THE 2001'S AND FOR THE 2001'S I BELIEVE THE FINANCE RATE IS 6.9%/60MO...SO, NOT MUCH OF A BIG DIFFERENCE (DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH YOU'RE DOWNPAYMENT IS I GUESS)

I have a new 2001 Sentra GXE, almost 800 miles so far. Is it good to leave the car in OD permanently or not? The car seems to run better in OD as opposed to just drive.
