Asked a Saturn dealer about side air bags and why they offer side head curtains but not the seat mounted air bags. He claimed Saturn felt that the jury was still out on the value of side air bags and that they presented a danger to children. Interesting.
  • majorthomechomajorthomecho Member Posts: 1,331
I believe you will find instances of people suffering injuries FROM the air bag deploying even when the proper air bag goes off at the proper time. And even when the person is also wearing a seat belt.

Also, I said "IF the side air gives added protection even during a frontal collision." That little word should indicate that perhaps they do offer added protection and perhaps they don't. I think it is something that needs to be looked at. IF they do offer added protection during a frontal crash, then they should be designed to go off in any crash.

The testing dummies in those offset frontal crashes go through some pretty bad head whips. Wouldn't a side air bag cut down on that?

    The $500 rebate expires 8/31/2001.

Does anybody here knows if Hyundai will put out a bigger bait for September ? Every other car company is pushing massive TV/radio ad campaigns, along with huge rebate offers to clear 2001 model year vehicles.

Please share any inside info. that you might have regarding Hyundai's plans. Thanks.

The new rebate begining 9/1/01 will be $1500 plus .9 % financing for 60 months and free scheduled maintenance for warranty period.

That's just a SWAG, but it's probably pretty close.

I drive by the Hyundai dealer everyday to work, and the lot is littered with Elantras. Looks like a swap meet or something.
  • nopey23nopey23 Member Posts: 10
    what does SWAG mean?

i just started looking at a car to get in December when I graduate...

Anyway... how likely would it be that I could get a good deal (rebate/finance wise) in December on a 2001 model? Are they usually all gone by then?

I'm almost tempted to get one in September just becuse of a $1500 rebate. That's pretty nice!

I believe the IIHS offset frontal tests on the Elantra confirmed the value of side air bags, at least in that type of crash. In three tests, the driver's side air bag deployed in two of them, preventing the dummy from bouncing off the B-pillar. In the third test, the dummy hit the B-pillar. The question now is, why didn't the side air bag deploy all three times?

Re danger of side air bags to children: Hyundai (and other automakers) specifically warn drivers about putting ANY child in the front seat, side bags or no side bags. I am hesitant to let even my 13-year-old son ride there (although he's almost as tall as I am). My 3 kids ride in the back--one reason I bought the Elantra, its back seat could hold all three comfortably.

Is the guess on the rebate, APR, or both?

Just wondering cause I'm trying to figure out when to get a car.

I'd love to wait until December-- what are the odds that the 2001 Elantras will still be around w/ a rebate?

    Thanks!

If you wait until Dec or Jan. you will be able to get a 2002 with a rebate , not a 2001!
Just take your time - don't rush; finish school first...

Even better yet, if you can go to California you will get it $2,000 cheaper still than in most other states !

  • coupe2001coupe2001 Member Posts: 100
all of it, but the rebate will definitely increase.
  • nopey23nopey23 Member Posts: 10
What kinds of rebates do they have on new cars around December though? Since they're all really new, wouldnt the rebates be really low ($500?) as opposed to possibly being $1000 or $1500?

    Thanks for the info!

Since some of you might ask where to buy the best aftermarket products for Hyundai, Kia, and Daewoo; then visit www.hdkautosport.com. I bought nearly all of my accessories at this site..Even dealer bought the products from them...

**Before I was hesistated and not too worry about the the safety features in the car too...However, my father-in-law was driving a commercial Isuzu older model without the airbag and he is nearly in comma when involve in the accident...If the car with the airbag then he would have been not nearly in comma. I was praying and now that he was wake up and find***Do not under estimated the airbags and crash test features...I hope Hyundai have resolve the situation for the airbag on the Elantra by now...I am planning to get the Elantra by next year (hopefully everything will be good at that time)....I am currently own the Santa Fe and plan to let this SUV for weekend and long trip only and the Elantra for weekdays commute to work...You can compare the Elantra with the Civic and Corolla but the Elantra is the best buy...1. Warranty 2. Price 3. Options 4. Beauty
  • majorthomechomajorthomecho Member Posts: 1,331
Hung, with all due respect, those may be your hot buttons, but other people have different hot buttons. My roommate will consider the Elantra because of the four reasons you mentioned, but if the safety is not there, she will be buying something else.
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
It's hard to tell or predict what it would be: because it all depends on how many people buy new 2002 cars...
If less people buy cars (because of the economy), the higher the rebate.

Why are Elantra's (and most other cars) cheaper in California? There is a price difference of $1500 between a California zip (90008) and my Chicago zip (60625) at carsdirect.com, and a $1000 difference for a Jetta. Anybody know what is up with that?
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
Since you live in the Chicago area... try this dealer's web - he might give you a surprising quote thru the internet:

    http://www.jacobstwin.com/html/sales/fs_sales.htm

JACOBS TWIN HYUNDAI 6722 W. GRAND AVENUE
    CHICAGO IL, 60639 (773) 889-3030
As for the cheap prices in California; I think there is a cut throat competition for the new car market there; and the manufacturers are heavily subsdizing their dealers thru higher holdbacks and other incentives not available in most states.

Remember on my last message; I do not input safety because safety is actually the most important part of every car..."Do not under estimated the crash test"....Since the Elantra built with good body structure; the car itself could be a winner on it owns category...However, the issue here was that the airbag deploy late...If Hyundai resolve this problem...I guess the Elantra could be in the top 3 best car in it owns category base on the crash test....Have anyone being able to contact Hyundai to see if the situation have been resolve? I hope somebody will do it.....

So far Hyundai is taking the Corporate "we have met all Government testing standards" stance -- which is true. They have generally done very well with all crash tests, not only domestically, but internationally, except the IIHS. They need to evaluate the recent tests and find out what was different and what went wrong. However, they do need to address the issue -- it can't be swept under the carpet. Remember the Pinto?

It would be nice to read a statement confirming that they are evaluating and will take whatever steps necessary to ensure that their cars are safe. Instead, so far, they are maintaining that they have met their legal testing requirements and that there will be no recall...not exactly what is needed to give current and potential Elantra owners a warm, fuzzy feeling. It's like telling us that the Elantra is not as safe as we thought, but it will still do for us. We are their customers -- we are more important than that!

As I have posted before, I believe that Hyundai is at the crossroads of attaining a higher level of credibility and product reliability, if they take the right steps in a timely manner, or retreating toward their previous dismal reputation. Hyundai makes a great product and I hope they don't stall or reverse their momentum by doing the wrong thing.

Hyundai is just doing what an american car manufacturer would do in the same situation.
The Chrysler PT cruiser passed all crash tests until the IIHS offset and then it failed.
This was many months ago and Chrysler's position is still that they passed all goverment tests.

    As a side comment:
I removed my home made fresh air filter from my Elantra this weekend and measured it.
So if anybody is interested in making one for their car or seeing if they can buy one, here are the dimensions.
    Width=10.5in Depth=9.25in Height=1in
  • intrepidspiritintrepidspirit Member Posts: 662
I agree, Hyundai is acting exactly like an American auto company. Have you noticed how the PT sales have decreased since the test?

I believe Hyundai has an opportunity to score a major victory with the auto buying public by demonstrating that they really care about their customers. Yes, this would be unusual, but it would get noticed and greatly enhance their image.

Lee Iacoca saved Chrysler many years ago by being unusual. He really seemed to care and this did wonders for Chrysler's public image.

This would be an excellent opportunity for Hyundai to enhance their public image. In the long run it may enhance their bottom line as well!

There's a little misinformation going on in here. The Ptcruiser has never been tested in the offset impact by the IIHS. The only people who have tested it are the NHTSA, who does the full frontal impact and the side-impact. In that test, the only area where it did poor was for the driver, who got 2 stars. It got such a bad rating due to a high head injury score that I believe was caused by too much dummy and/or steering column movement. I just wanted to clear up that misconception. Back to discussing the Elantra....
  • majorthomechomajorthomecho Member Posts: 1,331
The problems with the Elantra crash were not only the air bags, but also the seat slid forward on the right side. Too bad the same things did not happen in all three tests. Probably make the answers to the problems easier to find that way.
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
I thought the new Elantra did well in the crash test? I guess I was wrong. Where I heard that from is beyond me...lol
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
'01 GLS got a "Poor" overall ranking in the IIHS crash tests, after getting good marks in the NHTSA crash tests. As an owner of a '01 GLS, I am definitely not laughing out loud about it. In addition to the obvious safety issue, the stigma of a "poor" crash test, government-sponsored or not, won't help resale value.

I was thikning about trying to talk my dad into buying a 2001 Elantra (he is 55) as his first car. I am finally getting him to get his license now, and want him to have a new car. He won't be driving the car that much, but I want the car to be new (since a good used car costs about as much as a cheaper new one). I was considering the Elantra and the Accent. But since I have heard of people getting really good deals on Elantras, why not upgrade for just a little extra? :) It will be a basic model with only automatic as optional. But one thing, I am in Maryland so I won't probably get rhe lowest price (like in Ca.). Anyway, what would be a good price? Also, what is the rebate going to be in September?

I cant find it anywhere- did anyone see what it was??

I have a 2001 Elantra GLS with a 5-speed. It is due for its first oil change and I was thinking of adding Prolong or Slick 50. Has anyone tried any of these additives in their cars? Does it help gas mileage? Could there be a warranty problem? Is one better than the others?
  • browneybrowney Member Posts: 104
Before you put any "additives" in your car you should do some serious research as to their ability to perform as advertised.
Like a placebo, sometimes they are only as good as what the user perceives them to be. ;-)
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
    > >...and I was thinking of adding Prolong or Slick 50...< <

    Bye, Bye... warranty!

If in doubt, read what the manual says what fluids to put in!
  • nopey23nopey23 Member Posts: 10
Anyone know what the September rebate is on the Elantra? I called a few dealerships on Saturady and they didn't seem to know (I think they just wanted an excuse to get my info down, but that's just me)

    thanks
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
Is it Accent, or a base model Elantra GLS? Or, is it an 01 base model Sonata 4 cylinder that is being sold now for under $13k in a lot of areas? Interesting discussion. Looking at pounds of car and content for the dollar.
  • majorthomechomajorthomecho Member Posts: 1,331
Given your criteria and the ads I have seen around here, I would say the answer is the Sonata.

Things might be different in your neck of the woods though.
  • csandstecsandste Member Posts: 1,866
I would agree with Major Thom that you should be able to get a real good deal on a left over '01 Sonata. Remember, the '02's have lost alloy wheels that were available on last year's base car. If you like a manual transmission, you're out of luck on the '02's, although they have the shiftronic? (always confused with each brand's terminology). Also, I'm not convinced that the new ones are necessarily better looking. I'd test drive both the Elantra and both Sonatas and choose the one you like best.

If you decide on a Sonata, I'd also try to do a deal on an Optima, although the Sonatas were priced better and had better wheels and tires (believe the Kias had Hankook 70x14's on their base cars). I wouldn't recommend looking at the Sephia as a Elantra replacement. Big difference in quality there.

Title says all.. doesn't it have Hyundai Elantra's engine?
  • 5spd5spd Member Posts: 38
Why you need oil additives in a brand new car ?
  • liljonsonliljonson Member Posts: 109
i don't know about the 2002 sephia having the elantra engine, it was suppose to, i know that for a fact but its leaning towards the 125hp engine it used to have, but if it has the 140(really 147) beta 2 than thats great.
  • dreamwinddreamwind Member Posts: 44
Gosh darnit, this is really confusing me.. ugh..

but dont you think 125 is enough power for a car like the sephia?
  • nopey23nopey23 Member Posts: 10
    Too bad...

I was hoping for $1000-$1500 so I could afford it.

I guess I should wait until I graduate in December anyway and get it then, although Hyundai doesnt seem to do any college grad rebates like GM/Ford...
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
Hyundai most certainly does offer college grad rebates. I believe they are worth $400.00, but not sure if applicable for all models in all areas.
  • intrepidspiritintrepidspirit Member Posts: 662
Hyundai doesn't rebate like Ford/GM/Chrysler, etc. because their prices are already low. They have spent far less promotional money in selling cars than the national average this year.

But, since this is the model year end, there should be good deals out there on the 2001. On July 1, I bought a GLS with automatic, mud guards and floor mats (MRSP - $14,032) for $10,988. (net, after rebate). Since that time, I have seen clearance prices as low as $10,377 for the same cars.

I know our prices are lower in Southern California, but you should be able to get your best price on a 2001 now...rebate or no rebate! I doubt that there will be any 2001's around in December and the 2002's are not likely to be discounted at that time...
  • cyanogelcyanogel Member Posts: 11
Where did you get the information? I checked Hyundai website but it hasn't been updated.
  • nopey23nopey23 Member Posts: 10
I called a local dealer and carsdirect.com now has the $500 rebate through 10/01/01...

Maybe in October-- when are the 2002 Elantras hitting dealerships?

MPGMAN... how did hear about the college grad rebate? I never see it in the newspaper like I do for Ford and GM dealerships... that would be great if they do though.

Last.. anyone know what improvements the 2002 Elantras will have over the 2001s? Price increases?
  • liljonsonliljonson Member Posts: 109
125hp is perfectly fine for the sephia, the elantra had it, my mom owns a 98 elantra with the same engine and its a perfect car, its not sluggish at all, its really peppy, i like it
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
I see ads all the time in southern/central New Jersey offering the college grad rebate. Maybe it is a local thing.

My understanding is that the 02 Elantra GLSs will be basically be the same car and that there is no definitive news out yet on the 02 GTs even though Edmund's has posted prices. A few dealers and Hyundai corporate have told me that the 02 GTs may not be here until next year. The 02 Sonatas were given a facelift front and rear and now have a larger displacement 2.7L 6 cylinder. Alloy wheels may no longer be standard. Shiftronic auto tranny and auto climate control may also be new additions. The LX model also has a power driver's seat. ABS and traction control are a bundled option. The LX I saw had that, and also a separate line item for the sunroof. Not sure if you have to take the roof to get the ABS and traction control, but even if not, it might be hard to find one so equipped without the roof.

I believe that there is information on the Hyundai website regarding the college graduate rebate. hyundaiusa.com.

I was at a local dealer on Sunday and they have 2 2001's left and just got a shipment of about 15 or so 2002's They were all package 2's and priced exactly the same to the penny as the 2001 window sticker and no changes at all were made to car i think a few of the colors might have changed but all the ones in the shipment were either the pewter, champagne, and nordic white i believe. I was hoping they would still have more 2001's left i was hoping to wait it out for an even bigger rebate on an already super priced car.
  • dreamwinddreamwind Member Posts: 44
title says above.. the 2001 model has the same engine as the 1998 model.
  • steveb70steveb70 Member Posts: 15
Does anyone on the forum have experience with installing an aftermarket CD player, or any aftermarket radio for that matter, (I have a Kenwood from my previous car) in a 2001 Elantra?

I just got the wiring harness and other installation materials from Crutchfield, but there is no documentation on how the center panel detaches from the dashboard on the 01 Elantra. Since my car is brand new (only 415 miles on the OD), I don't want to do any damage to the dashboard area.

    Thanks for any tips!
    Steve

I've not done this myself, but you can get directions for removing the dashboard panels and the factory audio system at

    http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/default.asp

Once there, enter "Elantra" and "2001" in the appropriate boxes, and click on the "Shop" tab (first of 3). Then drill down as follows:

    -> Body Electrical System

    ----> Audio & Antenna

    --------> Radio

    ------------> Removal and Installation

It's the second generation 2.0L Beta(G4GC); ULEV-certified and called "New" Beta in Korea.
The engine in '98 Elantra is the 1st generation 1.8L Beta.
