My Wife and I own a 99 Elantra and a 99 Accent. My Wife has 16,000 miles on her Elantra and it has been perfect, even better then the Mercedes I bought new in 1979. My 99 Accent has 36,000 miles. At 25,000 miles the power steering pump started to make a little noise and a lightning strike blew out my radio. The dealer replaced the power steering pump and radio under warranty no questions asked. They gave me a free rental car overnight. I picked up the car the next day, everythig was fine. I thought the dealer treated me like I bought the most expensive Hyundai instead of the cheapest one. We are very happy with our cars and dealer waranty service so far. I think a lot of warranty problems are from bad dealers. If I had warranty problems in the near future I would get a lawyer. I live in Florida and there are PLENTY of lawyers here now to choose from.

It all has to do with the dealerships and how they do business since each are under their own managment. Some dealers are sleezebags, others really care about their customers. Thankfully, my dealer is the second choice. My dealer has been great to me. fixed the recall no problem. and on the 7500 mile service i had done a few weeks ago, he saved me $10 with a coupon that i didnt know about. Now thats customer service! Fortuantely nothing has broken on my car so far.

Heres a funny story id like to share...I had a 10" subwoofer and amp put in my elantra 2 days ago. I had it wired directly to the factory radio and speakers. the factory stereo sounds excellent w/ separate tweeters and midbass...just needed some more bass :) With the sub put in, it sounds great! Clear, crisp bass yet plenty of highs. Everything was fine till that night, when the temperature dropped to about 20 degrees. i went to a party, and went to turn on the heat and it blew cold air right in my face. I thought, "well ,engines cold...give it time to warm up" when i got to the party which was about 15 minutes away, i was turning chalk white. Freezing air blowing out the vents and i was shaking. I brought it back to Circut city the next morning. Turns out the installer forgot to put the rod back in for the heater. I was mad, but then thought: if this were the summer, then i would have never known till months later in this cold weather and couldnt blame him because too much time went by so thats good. Moral of the story: The stereo may sound great, but remember to check all your electrical stuff (lights, power windows, locks, heat, a/c, etc.) before you leave the installation center.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Just brought an elantra 2001 2 weeks back and the cars is really good , but i have noticed a vibrating noise probably from the engine at low accelerations , has anyone come across this type of noise . i would appreciate ur replies in this regard .
  • smiller678smiller678 Member Posts: 64
    Hi Tiger2001,

Where is the vibration coming from in the engine compartment? Is it where the accessory belts are? Is there a vibration and/or clicking sound? Can you feel the vibration in the steering wheel? When I got my 2001 Elantra I noticed a clicking sound about 4 days after I bought it. It was noticeable more at idle that when driving. It took a week to find it but it was the Power Steering Pump belt sprocket. It wasn't tight and was wobbling. I tighten it myself and the clicking sound went away. It took about 1 minute.

My daughter just purchased a 2001 Elantra (pkg2) new. I noticed a very slight play in the trunk lid. If I press on the lid when it is latched, I notice very slight movement and a clicking sound of the latch against the retaining bar. Is this movement normal? Can the latch be adjusted to remove the movement/clicking sound.

This may be a nit-pick, the dealer is 60 miles away, so i can't easily check other Elantras. She has 72 hours to decide on this car, so I invite other Elantra owners to comment on this issue
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Just tried my lid (er, the car's lid). When I press down, the lid does move slightly and there is a clicking sound. I also did the same thing on my '97 Sentra, and it acted the same way. I suspect there is some "give" in the rubber lid seal and the click is probably the latch bottoming out. If the trunk is watertight and the fit is good, I wouldn't worry about it.

just took my 2000 Elantra to Philly from DC this weekend. Four people, two of them with extra pounds :), and all of our luggage PACKED into the trunk. No probs - in fact, on 95 even with all that weight, the car was cruising in 5th gear at 80mph easy.....no need to downshift. The revs are a little high for my taste (almost 4k), but what should I expect for $10k? Anyway - the car hit 3k in route - will take it in for first oil change this week.

I do not treat this car well at all - always abusing it - it just asks for more. We will see what happens in the future....

Over the week of Thanksgiving, I devirginized Natalie, my 2000 Elantra. She had just under 4,000 miles on her since her birth in April, and last week I added a good 2600 miles in 7 days.

Got the oil changed just before I left. Drove from Champaign, Illinois to Chicago, from there to Tulsa, Oklahoma the next day, then to Houston the next day. 2 days later it was back to Tulsa, then back to Champaign after 2 more. Average speed was about 90mph, with some stretches of 10-20 miles at 105-110 just for kicks. She was revving between 3500 and 4000 rpms the whole way, but the engine temperature gauge never moved above normal. (External temp ranged between about 30 in IL to about 60 in TX)

Performance was just as expected, with gas mileage ranging from 24-31 mpg (it's going to be less than optimal when you're going 90...). No problems at all, other than the always-crappy gas gauge (hits empty with at least 4.5 gallons remaining out of 14.5).

All in all not too fricking bad for a $13,000 car.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
you have the SAME EXACT problem as I. The car either never fills up or the gauge is messed up. I can never get more than 10 or 11 gallons into the tank - even when the gas light has been on for days....
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
i got the same problem to. i brought it to the dealers attention at the 7500 mile service. he said the gas guage doesnt reset itself. it ll go till "full" when i fill the tank, but drop to fast and when its down till the line before E, i noticed it has about 4-5 gallons left in it when i checked the pump as i was filling up. I guess the gas guage is a minor flaw in the elantras. not a big deal. i dont get worried when i run low because i know i got a lot left in the tank. Better then an engine probelm :)
  • baberbaber Member Posts: 96
We own an Elantra and an Accent. I suspect that Hyundai uses the same gauge and sender in both cars since both read empty after about 10 gallons. The Accent tank holds 11.8 gallons.

I realy like my new car, however, does anyone have a problem with a burning type smell? It is not that new car smell. It appears to be like a burning smell. Can anyone help me on this matter?
  • lngtonge18lngtonge18 Member Posts: 2,228
The burning smell is a normal occurence on brand new Hyundais. It is the protective oily undercoat they spray on the bottom of the car to protect from sea salt corrosion on its trip across the ocean that begins to burn off as the exhaust system heats up. Give it a few weeks and the smell should go away. I encountered the smell on my '00 Accent for about a week after I bought the car.

My friend works at Ford as a fuel systems engineer, and he told me that the manufacturers set the fuel gauges so that after the needle hits empty, there is still enough fuel left in the tank to drive for another 50 miles or so. Nobody wants to see drivers stranded on the highway, I guess...
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
is COMPLETELY normal for the Hyundai. Mine stayed for almost a month.
  • alese1alese1 Member Posts: 28
    Hi -

What you can do in the meantime, while the burning scent disperses, you should drive with the "recirculate" button on, that way you don't get the outside air (the air containing the burning oil fumes) into the car while driving and you won't smell it. That's what I do, and it works for me.

    Hope this helps.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Maybe they "fixed" the gas gauge on the 2001 Elantras, because I went to fill mine up for the first time right when the needle touched E and put in 13.5 gallons--just 1 gallon reserve. Got about 27 MPG on the first tank (5spd)--not too bad considering it's winter in Minnesnowta and it was 100% in-town. Hoping it comes up a little after break-in. The burnt smell is almost gone now too. Only one "problem" so far: the little plastic plugs that hide the screws attaching the rear door pulls keep popping out in the cold weather. Some double-faced tape should fix that one, when I get around to it.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Oops, did the math wrong (and I'm a math major, jeesh)--actually got just over 24 mpg on the first tank. More in line with other reports. My last car, '97 Sentra (1.6L, 115 hp) got over 30 in town. The price of power I guess.

It seems to be an US/canada review, but the model is different, they have GL and VE??

This is the first review (online) of the elantra 2k1 with the exception of off-line magazine reviews.

    Anyone can find other reviews??
  • smiller678smiller678 Member Posts: 64
    Hi Backy,

I was right about in line with you on my 1st fill up of my 01 Elantra in terms of MPG. I got a tad over 23 mpg. This was mixed city/hwy with AC/heater on occasionally. My 2nd tank full was 25mpg under the same conditions. I now have almost 1500 miles. Also, I have an automatic.

My negotiated price for this car was $13,000. This included destination charges, auto/trans, option package 2, floor mats, cargo net and mud guards. It did not include tax and motor vehicle charges. Can anyone let me know if I got a good deal on my price?
  • crystalqcrystalq Member Posts: 10
I got an exactly same one as yours last month for $12468 in Kansas before tax and document fee. You can check http://communities.msn.com/HyundaiElantra
    for other deals.
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
that sounds pretty good since the 2001 elantra is a bit more then the 2000 elantra and since you got the auto. i say that was a pretty good deal. justin got the best deal. 10k for a 2000 elantra. but you did well consdering you got options. enjoy it! :)

After a generally positive review of the 2001
Hyundai Elantra the end with this:

"Though it likely won't match the refinement or
attention to detail found in segment leaders like
the Honda Civic and Ford Focus, the savings to be
found up front will certainly sway buyers for whom
every penny spent up front counts."

Refinement or attention to detail? Specifically
what does that mean? I have been in a 1999 Honda
Civic and I did not see any advantages to the
Civic. If anything the Civic's engine roar was
    louder.

As for the Ford Focus how many recalls have there
been for it? I understand more than one?

Does anyone have any specifics on just where the
Civic or Focus show more refinement or attention to detail (whatever that means).
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
The Focus is not more refined. The Civic is in "engine vibration". The Civic engine is just as loud, but you don't "feel" it like you do in the Elantra. Of course - the Elantra has a speedboat engine compared to the Civic's sewing machine engine....;)

I own an elantra 2000 and have experienced a strange noise while decelerating under 20mph. It goes away when stopped. Sounds like it's coming from the speedometer area. I have 2500 miles on my automatic. Should I take it in?
  • formula94formula94 Member Posts: 22
I spent 12,700 for my 2k1 with option4 mud guards, windscreen and floor mats.

I just picked up a 2k1 Elantra for my daughter. I also have a 2k Sonata. With my Sonata's keyless entry, there were two remotes and a light on the dash to show the system was armed. With here Elantra, there were two sets of keys but only one remote, and I didn't see a "armed" light. Is that the case? She has the owner's manual, so I can't check that. It's her first car, so I want to make sure she gets everything she paid for.
  • smiller678smiller678 Member Posts: 64
    Hi,

My 2k1 Elantra came with only one keyless remote and there is no arm light anywhere on the dash.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I've driven several Focuses (Foci?) as rental cars. To me, they don't come anywhere close to the quality of the 2001 Elantra. The Elantra feels much more solid. The Focus felt cheap (tinny doors, parts falling off all over) and the driving position was less comfortable than the Elantra. The Focus' ride is pretty smooth, but no better than the Elantra's in my opinion. I haven't driven the 2001 Civic but checked it out in the showroom (didn't bother to drive it since I wasn't going to cough up $15K+). I don't think the quality is noticeably better, except maybe the paint is a bit glossier. But bear in mind that either the Focus or Civic will cost you at least $2500-3000 more than a comparably-equipped Elantra (assuming you do some haggling on price). You'll get a lot of that back on the Civic at resale time, but I'd rather invest it. For me, it was a no-brainer to buy the Elantra--and I've owned and loved two Civics.

My '00 Sonata is performing soooo well, I went to look at the Elantra's just to know about them because I have a teenager who will be driving any day and to my surprise I came home with it.

Too soon to tell too much about it, BUT it seems good and upscale a bit from the base '00 Sonata.

If you care to see a pic of it click here http://www.geocities.com/tonykrapil/elantra.jpg

    See ya,

that is a nice elantra. lots of luck with it! anyway, i got a 2k elantra. I have about 8,200 miles and it is flawless. not one problem. even that recall didnt affect my car. looks like i got a good one. although the paint job is kind of thin.... scratches too easily in my opinion. then again the car is black, so it shows much more then any other color. anyone who has a black elantra notice this problem? thanks for the input.
  • tonykrapiltonykrapil Member Posts: 211
Thanx for the compliments, it is kinda nice actually. It has more refinement in some areas that I would have thought would be found in the 00 Sonata. My impression after 250 miles is that in town in handles much nicer than the Sonata, However on thge highway, even though it rides straight and true and moves pretty fast, I prefer the Sonata.

I think the Elantra has more of a sporty ride with more road feedback to the driver.

As for the paint, I waxed it yesterday and only one spot on the back, where the license plate lights are held, I noticed the only weak paint.

The car felt sticky before the was and wax, now it is feeling like the Sonata, pretty good.

    Take care,

    Tony

I am going to purchase 2001 Elantra spring time frame.Has anyone used on line quotes or maybe purchase through an on line dealer and if so how were the prices.I like most don't care to haggle, that is to say I do well when its a friend I need to haggle for, figure it.What I'm buying is auto/with the #5 package. What kind of price am I looking at from those of you who purchased or use on line pricing.

    Thanks

I checked out the pics of the elantra, there is a plastic cover for the engine. How come the one I test drove a month ago didn't have it??

    Is it standard??

There have been reports on the Web from numerous 2001 Elantra buyers around the U.S. of deals in the range of $100-$300 over dealer cost. My deal was in that range. The deal you can get depends on several factors, but I'd definitely set an initial offer at the low end of that range, say $100 over dealer cost. Be sure to include any rebate ($500 rebate expired Nov. 30 but may be extended) and the holdback, which is 2% of the total invoice price including options, in your figures), and stay there until you get a deal OR there's clearly no way anyone will sell to you at that price (e.g., you walk out of multiple dealerships and none of them come after you). I dealt over the phone and in person directly with sales managers (rather than sales reps--they won't go that low on their own). Some dealers may take you more seriously if you deal in person, ready to buy that minute if they meet your price. Also be sure to get any offer in writing, since there's been several reports here of great offers that mysteriously disappeared. Hopefully those with Internet buying experiences will comment. Good luck!

I get a moderate vibration at 70 mph and more in the steering wheel. Has anyone else had this problem. Balancing the tires did not solve the problem and the dealer is not being cooperative or helpful.

    thanks

Try a different dealer and have the alignment, and struts checked. Check the tires for strange wear patterns. You might try rotating the tires to see if the problem moves to the rear. You should also check the rims, a slightly bent rim can cause vibrations. There are a lot of problems that could cause vibration at high speed, you really need a dealer who is willing to check all of the possible problems. If you can't find a dealer willing to work on your problem, take your car to a good tire shop and have them look at it. You may end up spending a little money but you will have a better chance of fixing your problem. You might even get Hyundai to reimberse you later.

    Goodluck!!

I just bought my wife the same color 2k1 elantra, we got the option4 manual, how about you? We have 124 miles on it.
  • formula94formula94 Member Posts: 22
Tony, I used edmunds as a guide and took the invoice, added all the options and it totalled about 13.2k i then took off the 500 rebate and we got the deal done at 12.7k for manual option4 windshield, mudguards and mats. They tried to get me to move up 50 even 100.00 but with money in hand I started to walk and they said yes. It was a nice experience. I never purchased a foreighn car before, and I am happy with the experience. Good Luck to you!
  • tonykrapiltonykrapil Member Posts: 211
here is what I got, the car with auto and mats for 12,500 + taxes.

I think I got a good deal, but ya just never know for sure. I got up and was going to leave too and go back to the dealer where I purchased my 00 sonata BUT he didnt like to hear that and took my offer.

It is running fine and have 300 miles on it not and will do a 500 mile r/t tomorrow

My first mileage check was at half tank and it was 36!!!!

I do have a tiny situation I hope clears on its own. At times and I cant figure exactly yet when or why, BUT when I hit the brake pedal I feel a shudder in the front and in the pedal. THEN its gone for a real long time. It seems to be when its cold meaning not driven and it happens only once.

ALSO, because of this problem I am real observant now as I dont have any troubles with the sonata, however, when going 70, I feel a slight vibration or resonance or something in the steering. If I go down to 68 or up to say 73 it is gone. It may just be tire balance.

ALSO, be sure to check your tire inflation. My fronts were 47 and 48 while the backs were 23 each. I even used and compared 3 tire gauges just to make sure it wasnt me!

Good luck with it. I hope your first foreign car experience will be rewarding!!

It seems like it is not something with your car alone. Mine has it too.

I will see if it changes any in the next week or so. IF NOT, I will take it in. Do you notice any brake pulsing at times?

    Tony
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
Thats not a big deal. You just need to get your brakes adjusted. mine shuddered a bit too. i brought it in for its 7500 mile service and they adjusted the brakes and its much more responsive and smoother now. Just bring it in and they can adjust it for you. Enjoy your new car :)

    Hi,

Just want to say that I bought a new 2000 black
wagon. Package 2, automatic for a total price
of $12,900, including 5% state tax and everything.

In one month I've put 1400 miles on it. No problems so far. Absolutely perfect.

I still own my '94 black civic si, and while
it is a quality car and has never given me a problem, I prefer my wagon greatly. It is SO much more comfortable, roomier, quieter
    and faster then my civic.

To any musicians or young families out there...
I highly recommend this car. I've already hauled
tons of equipment, a dresser, and of course my
    baby boy in complete comfort.

    $12,900...even I can afford it!
