I have a 2K Elantra Wagon which has proven to be a great buy. My only dissatisfaction is with the gas gauge. It looks like it's hit reserve and the light comes on but filling at that point only puts 11 gallons in the tank which is a major irritation since I could have driven another 80-100 miles.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or have I got a mysteriously shrinking gas tank?
  • liufeiliufei Member Posts: 201
Most gas gauges are designed to appears to hit reserve when there's still a few gallons left on the tank (2-3 gallons). I guess this is to reduce the chances of people running completely out of gas.
Another thing to consider, the gasoline in your fuel tank also act as a coolant to the fuel system (fuel pump? not 100% sure which one), thus driving an extended period of time with near empty gas tank is not advisable due to possible damage cause by lack of coolant.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
EVERYONE that has a 2k Elantra has the little problem. Just be happy that it is not anything too serious ;)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Who wants accurate gas gauges? That would take all the fun out of the "How Far Can I REALLY Go Before I Have to Fill Up" Game. I admit I play that game occasionally, thinking that there is some value in waiting just a little bit longer to fill up (and these days with gas prices yo-yoing every couple of days, maybe there is some value in waiting). I only got into trouble once, when I was young and foolish and wanted to prove (why I don't know) that I could drive my Celica from Austin to Houston, drive around all weekend, and return on one tank. I did it, too, but coasted into a gas station coming into Austin. Nowdays my '99 Grand Caravan lets me play the game without risk, because it still has FIVE gallons left when the low fuel light comes on. Makes my wife nervous, though. But I have to watch it with my '01 Elantra--it only has a one-gallon reserve when the needle touches empty, and no low fuel light (at least none that I've noticed yet).

This is an interesting topic actually. I live in Orlando, but grew up in the middle of Chicago.

I learned from the street that you better have a full tank OR more gas than the bad guy has in case he decides to follow you.

Weird thought, isnt it? ALSO, I remember the gas crunch and fuel rationing. You might could only get a few gallons a day. Well, this too makes me keep a full tank or there about. I rarely let it get under half as I want to have enough to get back to where I started from.

    I know I know, weird!

One other thing to consider about full tanks this time of year is that condensation usually forms on the bare walls of the tank. with the tanks being sealed tight with the tight gas caps, I am not sure this is a concern anymore.

    See ya,

I just bought 2001 Elantra, auto and #3 pkg.
I have a question. How may keys you get with this new car? I was given 2 keys and only one Transmitter. The sales person says that's how the
manufacturer supplies the car to him.
Another question: What type of cd player [240 or 260 etc] comes with package 3?
    Thanks.
  • tonykrapiltonykrapil Member Posts: 211
I only got two keys. I dont have wireless remote capability.

    Tony
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Two keys and a remote is what you get. Two keys are pretty standard except for cars that have a "valet" key. I'm kinda glad there's only one remote--I have an excuse not to give it to my lovely wife. I gave both remotes for my Caravan to my wife, and she lost both of them. Cost $250 to replace and configure.

I was checking under the hood and hadnt spotted the oil filter yet! Is it behind some cover like on the Sonata?

    IT is really hidden!

    Tony
  • baberbaber Member Posts: 96
The oil filter on the 2000 is at the front of the engine on the passenger side I believe. You have to get at the filter from under the car. There is a plastic splash shield under the front of the car. You need to unscrew the shield and pull it down to get to the oil filter. Actually it is quite easy to change the oil and filter. I just unscrew three of the screws that hold the splash shield and pull it down enough to get at the filter. once the shield is out of the way it is easy to replace the filter, you have to remove it from under the car, but you don't have to jack the car up. Takes about a half hour to change the oil and filter. I assume it is the same on the 2001 models since the engine is the same.

I will check it out! I have a 00 Sonata also and was looking for it on the back of the engine like on the Sonata.

I only have 800 miles on it, but am getting ready!

    Thanks,

    Tony
  • baberbaber Member Posts: 96
Been using synthetic oil on my Accent and Elantra since I bought them. I can change my own oil and filter with the best synthetic for the same as paying for an oil change with regular oil. Get the oil filter from Hyundai. The Hyundai filter has a nice tapered seal like you find on the expensive mobil one filters. When you get the filter, don't forget to buy a new gasket for the drain plug. Hyundai uses a crushable metal washer for their drain plug that is only good for one use. The gasket is less then a dollar, the filter is about 6 bucks. Don't forget to keep all the reciepts for warranty proof.

I'm curious to find out what kind of traction control system is in the current '01 Elantra.

Does it slow the engine down, gear down, and apply braking force?

    Hope someone knows! :-)

    Thanks!!

    Hi

Any one knows the information about this program? I am ready to buy a new 2001 Elantra and wondering what are the details about this program?

    Please share your information

    Thank you

The New College Graduate perk applies to undergrad and grad students who will be graduating within 6 months or those who've graduated within the past year. What you get is a "lower interest rate" and you aren't required to give a down payment. Check out www.hyundaiusa.com and look under the financing section. I wonder how low the interest rate really is.

    Good luck!

well earlier tonight i purchased a used 2000 elantra with a little under 24,000 miles on it - it has only had one owner (what you would expect with this new a car) - anyway...

so as typically done when you get a new car - i am driving around when i stop at a stop sign in a subdivision on a SLIGHT incline - when i start to go (it is an automatic) it kindof hesitates (now my husband always tells me i am neurotic about this type of thing so i think - o it is probably nothing) so i look down and on pops the check engine light....GREAT HUH??? on my first night of owning the thing!!! now - the reason i think i have a black cloud is - we bought a dodge durango brand new in may and the same thing happened to me the day after i bought it!!!!! could anyone POSSIBLY be this unlucky??? the reason we bought this is because we wanted something dependable and the warranty seemed great too...now after reading these posts i am REALLY concerned and it is hard to stay excited about our purchase after tonight's events!! i have read that others have had the check engine light come on - what is the consensus on this problem? i want to know if the dealer tries to blow me off or feed me a line of baloney....thanks for your help

    (looking for some major reassurance)
  • tonykrapiltonykrapil Member Posts: 211
You will be fine, even if it has to go into the shop for a day.

If you recently bought some fuel, make sure the cap is on tight. Make sure it clicks about 3 times as you tighten it.

You probably got a good deal and the previous owner didnt want to deal with the light. Maybe he didnt even have it light!

The dealer (hyundai) will be able to check if there are any recalls etc.

I can imagine the feeling of having that happen on the first day or two of owning the car.

Let us know what it was.

    Tony
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
take it to Hyundai. The car will be fine :)

Mine has yet to have any problems.....
  • alese1alese1 Member Posts: 28
I was told by the Hyundai dealership that it is very important when you re-fuel to make sure the gas cap "clicks 3 times" when your done refueling, if not, sometimes, the engine light will on go for some reason. It just the way the car is designed that it actually knows that it clicks 3 times. This is also stated in the owner's manual.
  • zaxxon41zaxxon41 Member Posts: 6
There was a recall awhile back relating to that problem; I took mine in and it's been fine since they made the fix. Take it in and you should be fine.
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
did any 2000 elantra owners notice that your car idles lower then it did before at one time? i noticed that my elantra use to idle at about 800 rpms when i first got it in april. i noticed now that its about 650-700 rpms and the car viabrates very slightly. im wondering if this is from the cold weather, because here in NJ, its pretty cold now, especailly the past few weeks. any input would be appreciated.
  • jc58jc58 Member Posts: 48
I was wondering if the 2001 Elantra handles decently in the snow? Is the traction control required.

Does the vehicle seem fairly reliable? We bought our daughter a 2000 Accent and have been pleasantly surprised, have had no problems with the car, though she has only put about 2,500 miles on it.

Do these vehicles seem to hold up over the years?
  • adam1234adam1234 Member Posts: 1
These cars last forever. I have a 90 excel with 190,000 miles and no trouble. I also had a 95 accent with 98,000 and no trouble, I just sold that car for a down pamment on a 2001 elantra which I love. My excel was not worth anough so I kept it. And also my wife has a 98 tib with no trouble.

We have an Excel, elantra, tib never gave us trouble they last forever.

My 2000 elantra automatic has 3700 miles on it. I have been getting 22,24 and 26 mpg with combination driving. My 97 Sentra got 28-30 for the same driving conditions. Can I expect more?
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
you should get better gas mileage. you should get about 25 in the city and 35 on the highway. However, if it is cold where you are located, then the gas mileage should be worse because the engine has to idle higher. that is with any car.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I think the 2001 Elantra handles very well in the snow, which we've had a lot of so far this winter in the Twin Cities. I've also been pleasantly surprised by the braking in the snow and ice; even w/o ABS it brakes well, no fishtailing (but that's with proper winter braking procedure of course).

Re mileage, I'm getting around 24-25 mpg too but the car is new (500 miles), it's cold (below zero F. most days), and I've been making a lot of short trips. I too had a '97 Sentra and it got around 28-30 in the same weather, but remember the Sentra has 115 hp vs. 140 for the Elantra. That's about a 22% increase in horsepower, which doesn't come for free (e.g., compare mileage ratings for the Sentra GXE and the Sentra SE--there's a big difference). So since 29 mpg is about 22% more than 24 mpg, I'd say we were breaking even. Still, I can't wait until spring or a long road trip to see how the mpg improves.
  • liufeiliufei Member Posts: 201
Any of the Elantra's owner out there has the Michelin Energy MXV-4 as their OEM tires? How good is that tire in winter driving such as now?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I have the Michelins. See previous post for details. They're OK in the snow, seem to grip pretty well on braking, but they're no Blizzaks.

Some posts mention other tires - Kumho? Early ads for the 2001 Elantra highlighted the Michelins. Did Hyundai switch tire brands?
  • darpin1darpin1 Member Posts: 49
I have Khumo tires...pretty good a bit soft on the sidewalls (H-rated surprisingly) they squirm a bit in the cold for some reason...noisy like snow tires...I personally wouldn't recommend MXV4 Michelins had experience previously that they are poor in wet condtions and not that good in snow...The TIRERACK has info and posts that might help you decide...Michelin X one on the other hand are a better, less noise, cheaper vs MXV 4 tire and are long wearing

I am looking to buy a new Elantra. The delear is quoting a price of $10,889 plus TT&L. Is this a reasonable price?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Jimmy32, are you talking a 2001 Elantra? Brand new, not a demo? If so, this is a great deal. I'm assuming it's a base 5spd (otherwise it's an even better deal). Take $11,504 for the invoice, add $435 for destination, subtract the $500 rebate, and subtract the 2% holdback, and the dealer is offering to sell the car to you under his cost. Take it and run. Be sure to get the offer in writing, because I've seen posts where great deals like this have a habit of "going away" when the buyer tries to actually buy the car.
  • jimmy32jimmy32 Member Posts: 4
    Thanks Backy.

I was as suspicious as you which was why I posted originally.

It turned out to be a "real deal". The final purchase price was $10,999 + TTL (no trade-in). It was a 2001 Elantra - the only options were floor mats and mud flaps.

Anyway, I took your advice and purchased the car. Obviously, Hyundai has some additional incentives going on.

    ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO?
  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
Wow, you got a really great deal. I have a 2k elantra, that i got for 10,800. however, that was after 5 hrs of haggling. but i got mine with alloy wheels, premium stereo and cruise control. So it was a steal for me! :) However, the 2001's have 15" wheels and side air bags standard, and its a bit more for the base model this year then last year, so i guess its a fair trade off.

Good luck with your new car. Im sure you will enjoy it as much as Im enjoying mine!

Has anyone had the problem of a roaring noise when excelerating?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Do you have a 5spd or auto? My 5spd has a "growl" when accelerating hard, quieter than the 2000 5spd but noisier than the auto. To me, the noise seems normal for the car and not unlike other cars with similar-sized engines (e.g. Neon) I've driven. Is the roar there all the time when accelerating or does it come and go? If it bothers you, best bet is to let the dealer check it out, and if they say it's normal ask to drive another '01 to see if it sounds the same.
  • johhujohhu Member Posts: 17
My 00 Elentra with 4k has the same problem. And my wife keeps reminding me:"Do you think our car is too loud?" During acceleration (not hard acceleration, just to follow a Corolla or new Sentra),the roaring is disturbing when rpm goes between 3000 and 3500.I am taking it to the dealer after holiday.
    Marry Christmas everyone!

My current ride is a 1993 El antra with 61,000 miles, an automatic transmission and the 112 inch engine.
Last night it would not start nor turn over. I only heard the solenoid click when I tried to start it. We tried to jump start it to no avail. The temperature was around 15 degrees farenheit. I came back to it about an hour and a half later and it started immediately. That was without attempting to jump start it.

This happened once before about 2 weeks ago. We tried to jump start it to no avail, on the 6th attempt it fired up.
On both occasions, I had been shopping for less than an hour. It has started on mornings that were much folder.
Apparently something has to cool down before it will start.

There was a post by bigbear4 in the archive El antra discussion. He has the same problem and he has replaced the starter 3 times, yet the problem persists. If you know whence this comes, I would appreciate your insight.

Jimmy32, I'm also currently looking around for 2001 Hyundai Elantras and so far the lowest price offered to me on that car is 14K (which is high!!). Thus, I wonder if you could tell me which Hyundai Dealer did you go to for your recently bought 2001 Elantra?
If anybody else knows about this dealer, please inform me. I would really appreciate it.

    to goody2shoes:

In southern California, 2k1 elantra is advertised for under $10000 (bendick hyundai, hyundai of long beach, and beach hyundai). I testdrove two months ago, the salesperson gave me a price of $11000 straight up.
  • tonykrapiltonykrapil Member Posts: 211
I had a Toyota that did similar once. It was the battery. It had an internal short and did not take a jump or anyting. I found this by actually REMOVING one lead of the battery and it jump immediately.

When I measured the battery voltage it was approx 8 volts. The guy at the battery shop said watch this..... he took the battery and slammed it on the ground and then took a voltage reading and it popped right back to 13 or so volts.

Needless to say, I got a new batery and never saw that problem again!

    Good luck to ya!

This car ruuns great ! I did notice something interesting today though that my 00 Sonata does not do, least I dont think it does.

When driving around and not wanting to either smell some nasty exhaust or to get max heat or cool, I use the Recirculate button.

I noticed this evening that when recirculate it ON and I shut the car off , and come back and start it, the RECICULATE is OFF.

This is not a problem , but perhaps an observation.

Does yours do this too or do I have a vacum leak ?

    Looking forward to your answer!

Yesterday's paper had a 2000 Elantra Wagon (18 available) for $9,900 at Atlantic Auto Mall with the 2001 Sonata for $10,900.They treated me nicely when I purchased my 2000 Sonata GLS.I was very happy with the saleslady and dealership. Paid $16,100 total.
  • alese1alese1 Member Posts: 28
I believe that if you have the recirculate button on and you turn off your car, when you turn the car back on the recirculate will set itself back to off. It happens to my car, its normal. Check the owners manual.
  • jkempskiejkempskie Member Posts: 49
I've had very similar problems with my current '92 Subaru. Usually, the thing starts up fine, but ocassionally it won't turn over after taking a short trip. I take a wrench and bang the starter a couple times. Then the car starts up fine and the problem goes away for a few weeks!

It's very possible the problem could be related to your battery or a corroded cable, though.

    Good luck.

  • elantra00elantra00 Member Posts: 225
this could be a couple things. it could be the starter. if you hear a clicking when trying to start the car, its the starter. it could also be a lose connection. the car is 7 yrs old and that could happen. low batter charge, cold weather can also add to it

    Jimmy32 or anyone,

I'm planning to purchase a 2001 elantra before the rebate is over. Does anyone know of a good dealership? I'm curious where you bought your car Jimmy32. I found a dealership that will offer me the car for 13,000 with abs and 4 speed automatic. I'm sure this doesn't include destination or other fees. IS there a better deal out there??

I just got back from hassling with the local Hyundai dealer for a new black 2001 Elantra with auto and package #2 option they just go off the truck this morning. The car had a sticker price of $14,560. I told them I wanted to stay as close to the $13,300 as possible. The lowest they where willing to go was $14,379 after creating a price out of the blue for $16,379 and so-called given me $2000 for my trade. I was so furious that I left the dealer.
Do you guys think I did the right thing??
