It's above the oil filter. See this link.

my check engine just came on what are some of the reasons, I have an 01 Elantra, haven't had any problems, brought it in July at the time had 113,000 miles, now has 125, 000. let me know some of things I need to check for

    thanks

I haven't posted in a while. My 2002 EGT has reached 200 000 km (125 000 miles), and it is still going strong. Other than the usual repairs and maintenance, this has been a great little car. We hope to bring it past the 250 000 km mark before buying a new car, perhaps the new 08 Touring. Most of our drinving is on the highway (75-80%). Those who are thinking about a used Elantra should check if the maintenance shcedule was fully implemented, and most important of all, if oil/filter changes were done on a regular 6 000 km basis. :)

It could be anything. You need to get the code read. AutoZones near me will read them for free; ask around at auto parts stores to see if they'll read yours for free.

can someone tell us when you want to change the fuel in the power steering where is it located on 2001 elantra? when turning the wheel at the start of the car there are noises, once the car is running you don't hear them. Also is there a drainage nut and where is it located. thanks so much, need this information fast.

Hey Elantrans....I bought an 06 Elantra in Dec and have put nearly 5K miles on it. Seems like a good car so far. Question is, does anyone out there use synthetic oil? Moble1 etc.
  • doohickiedoohickie Member Posts: 949
Some people do. I'm old school and run dino oil, change it every 3k. Regardless of what you use, though, be very conscious of the oil filter you use. The Hyundai and Honda filters have the same base, and someone who doesn't have the Hyundai filter in stock might substitute the Honda filter. The problem is that the Honda filter has a higher bypass pressure which means if it's used on a Hyundai it can cause oil starvation and engine damage. The issue is prevalent enough that Hyundai issued a Technical Service Bulletin about it.

I've always used Hyundai OEM oil filters. I can get them for $6 each at my dealer, or a whole oil change for $15.95. I don't think it's worth chancing the engine to save a few bucks here and there. For aftermarket filters, Purolator's site shows that they have the correct bypass value (12-15 psi) and I've also heard that Wix is good.

find out if the timing belt has been changed, and ask for proof. That is a $400-$500 maintenance item and should be done at 60K. The belt typically lasts longer than that, but as the second owner on a Hyundai with over 60K miles, you have no warranty. The 10 year, 100K power train warranty is for original owner (or for the 2002, a family member) only. If it is an automatic, the fluid should have been changed twice by now. If a standard, as with all standards, have the clutch checked out.

But, they are good solid cars.

Thank you very much for your information.

I will enquire all the details.

We're a Hyundai family (2000 Santa Fe, 2005 Elantra & 2006 Tiburon) and I've just run into my first issue. I just took the Elantra in for it's 30k, and the mechanic said the rear brake cylinders are both leaking and need to be replaced. This seems a bit early in the life cycle, so I've got an appointment at the dealership. Anyone have any experience with this?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
That does seem very early, but the good news is that it is covered under warranty.
  • jlflemmonsjlflemmons Member Posts: 2,242
That is early. At 60K mine were fine. As Backy said, even if they are leaking, it is a covered warranty item.

    I just purchased a 2004 Elantra
I caculated the gas mileage, it is ONLY 17.1MPG for the last 150miles(local)!!!
isn't it claimed to be 26/34?? I use 88 gas.
does this indicate a problem in my car??
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Did you fill it up when you got it and then calculate the MPG when you filled again? If not, you don't know how full the tank was and in only 150 miles, a gallon or two would make a huge difference in your calculation.

we have a 2001 Elantra and had the belts changed because they were making noise when we turn the wheel to the right and when we moved the car in the morning, well they are still making noises; but when the car seems to be warm its stop. Is anyone else having this problem?

Also we had the plugs and wires changed, now when we put gas in the car the wheel will vibrate for a few miles this is something new too. any information on this
    Much thanks in advance.
  • flameranflameran Member Posts: 2
    yes.
I caculate the MPG in your way.
    fill and refill then caculate.
so is there any way I can improve the MPG?
I just drive it from and to school and never drive as a sport car.
the car has 73k on it.

I need some new tires to replace the Michelin Energy MVX4 Plus tires that were originals on my 2002 Elantra. The are being phased out and Michelin is replacing by them with Primacy MVX4s. A little cheaper but still pricey. Does anyone know a less expensive alternative tire to Michelins that will run well on my Elantra.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Take a look at Kumhos. They are OEM for many Hyundais now. I replaced the Michelins on my 2001 Elantra GLS with Kumho Ecsta HP4 716s and they gave a smooth, quiet ride and good wet handling, better than the Michelins. (My sister owns the car now.) The Michelins only lasted 30k for me (I have to have some tread for winter), and the Kumhos may not do much better but they cost only about $40 each on sale. They have been replaced now with a newer design, but the tire dealer should be able to tell you the closest equivalent (got mine at Discount Tire).

    Hello
Does anyone know if we can use 20/50 oil for an oil change, has anyone use this on their car, we have 2001 Elantra with 133,000 miles on it.

Second, at what rpm should the car be set at? If someone can answer before Friday, much appreciated

    Dria
  • jlflemmonsjlflemmons Member Posts: 2,242
No. 10W30 is the max recommended multi. The only time 20W50 MIGHT be acceptable is in extreme heat conditions, but the little 2.0 runs cool.

Idle is computer controlled, at around 800rpm if I remember correctly.

I just had the get my right rear brake cylinder replaced, I have an 2005 w/ ~40K on it. It was covered under the warranty no problems though, the mechanic said he hadn't seen that too often, especially w/ that low mileage. Hopefully just a fluke.

Blower does not come on! AC either! Checked fuses, none blown, so where to begin troubleshooting? :confuse:
  • doohickiedoohickie Member Posts: 949
Did you check the fuses in both fuse boxes (under the hood and under the dash)?

    Hi
Does anyone know about "Turbine Speed Sensor" it has to do with the sensor in the transmission, I have a 2001 Elantra has 135,000 miles. Does this say the transmission will go or what?? Thanks in advance

Does anyone have any info on this? The owners manual does not explain how

    Hello,

I just purchased a 2002 Elantra. The interior dome lights are out. I don't have a owner's manual so I'm not sure exactly what fuse to replace in the fuse box. Does anyone know which one I could replace?

    Thanks!
    :)

I have a 2004 Elantra that just passed the 50K mark. Are the maintenance checks they recommend in the manual necessary and can they be done somewhere else other then a dealer?

    Thank you!
  • jimbeaumijimbeaumi Member Posts: 620
My little GLS ('01) 5-speed is still chugging along at almost 88K miles. The other day, my check engine light came on maybe an hour after filling up the tank. I replaced the gas cap securely as always, but I am wondering if over time the thin gasket on the cap might be wearing out. Should I be closing the cap with many clicks now that she's in her middle years?

Other than this, I am still VERY happy with this car, which will be seven years old in July.

    :)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If you want to keep the manufacturer's warranty in force, you need to perform the manufacturer's recommended maintenance on the car. Also, they will help keep your car running reliably and efficiently. Just watch out for the dealers that try to tack on additional services. Some of those might be useful, e.g. tire rotations (those aren't specified in the manual), but others are dubious at best.

Your car is fast approaching the 60k service. This is a major service and very important one. It will cost some bucks, but it includes some important maintenance items, including replacement of the timing belt. If that breaks, the engine will be seriously damaged.

You can have the services performed anywhere you want. You can even do them yourself if you have the skill and time. Just be sure to keep records of all services, and use OEM parts or OEM-equivalent parts, even for parts as mundane as oil filters.

    Hello,

I have a 2002 Elantra GT automatic and live on the peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area. I used to go to east bay for major service (richmond to be exact) since there is no hyundai dealer on the peninsula.

Just by chance, I found there is a dodge dealer in redwood city selling new hyundais called "peninsula dodge hyundai". Does anyone here have good experience having their hyundais serviced there? If yes, I would try it out wholeheartly without spending time and gasoline traveling 80 miles both ways to my old dealer.

    Thanks.

My 2002 with 89k sometimes squeals very loudly when making a sharp turn into a parking space. That's the only time I ever hear it- never when turning a corner while driving. A few month ago I told the dealer service guys at an oil change and they "couldn't recreate the noise", but did say there was some little leak with the steering that they fixed. I totally trust them- they have been awesome and had to do some major warranty work at 50k. Well, it still makes the noise every once in a while just like before. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm going to tell them again at the next oil change, but thought I'd post here too. I'd like to keep it noise free since I'm planning on selling it and buying an '09 touring! :shades:

Did they check the belts? Have they ever been replaced? They could be wearing out.
  • eba55eba55 Member Posts: 20
I think they did replace them with the engine work at 52k, but I will ask. Thanks for the input.

    Question
QUESTION: I have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra with 51,000 miles on it. My check engine light has been popping up every now and than so I checked the code. It said, "P 0715, input turbune speed sensor / circuit malfunction" and P1529 Vehiclle speed idle control auxillary input" I could not figure out anything about it nor my mechenic.

Is this something that would be covered under the Hyundai Powertrain warranty ? Is it something small that my mechenic would be able to fix with a small charge.

    Thanks very much.
  • inharmswayinharmsway Member Posts: 153
Do any of you have the this noise? My air cond. compressor makes a sound like:tick, tick, tick, tick. I can only hear it on the 1st fan speed. I could not dublicate it at the dealer, but they said it could be one of the belts. I had all 3 replaced at 60000 miles service, but it did not make any difference.
  • inharmswayinharmsway Member Posts: 153
My air cond. compressor makes a ticking noise. I can only hear it on 1st fan speed. It did not happened at the dealer of course. They said it could be one of the belts, but after that I had all 3 replaced at the 60000 miles service it still tick, tick, ticks.
  • gomst1gomst1 Member Posts: 58
If you hear the noise only at the 1st fan speed, my guess is a leaf/debris stuck inside the vanes of the blower motor. If it is compressor noise the ticking noise will change with engine RPM not with fan speed. You will need to drop the blower motor to remove the debris. Have fun.

2003 Elantra GLS 5M 63K miles still going strong after 5 years. It has never let me down.

    Warranty repairs:

    Gas filler neck
Plastic piece at base of windshield
    Headlights
Drivers seat left side plastic molding
Heater hot air to foot vent - not fixed

    Non-warranty repairs:

Timing belt preventative relacement - around $250 at dealers
Front discs at 57K - a new record for me - never more than 30K on other cars
    Numerous 4 wheel alingments
Tail light and license plate bulbs

Things I like about the car:

Good rear visibility - low trunk unlike 2007 and newer.
Summer 34 MPG superhighway driving, 30 MPG light traffic local driving
Patterned fabric - been called "airplane fabric" but I like it - still looks new
The tachometer still works - unlike 3 Chrysler Corp cars I had

Things I don't like about the car:

Can't seem to hold an alignment for a year - a 2700 pound car should not have this problem. My 1989 Plymouth Acclaim was the same weight and never required an alignment.

The drivers seat bottom is uncomfortable for me on a long trip

Many of the exposed fasteners (screws) are rusting - I go after them with WD40

Slight rust appering on lip of rear fender well

Headlight lenses are starting to fog

    Suggestions for improvement:

If a timing chain or some other alternative is possible I would pay extra at the time of purchase to avoid the expensive PM later.

    Better corrosion protection of fasteners

    More comfortable driver seat

More robust running gear to reduce alignments.

My mechanic had not seen one of these cars when I bought it and asked me how I liked it. I told him wait 5 years and then ask me - the answer is yes.
  • inharmswayinharmsway Member Posts: 153
    Thanks
The reason I can not hear the noise except at low fan speed, is that the fan gets too noisy. I think the noise goes up with RPM. Will try with a stethoscope next.

    Hi there,

I would like to have the pleasure to report my '02 GT (5-door) AT as well.

It is currently at 55K miles and I just had 60K service (480), new battery (95), RR brake light (5) and rear brake pads (210) replaced. The front pads still have 40% left and should last till 90K service (at which point I will have spend over 400 for timing belt here in CA).

Except some trim issues, such as the black tapes on the doors, fixed under warranty early on, my car has not failed on me, not even once. Besides new tires at 35K, all other parts are still original unless mentioned above.

I bought Hyundai oil filter and washer online and used them when doing oil change at local shops. But always try to get the major things done at the dealer so that no BS later should anything weird happens.

Overall, I really like the reliability and utility of this car.

    Hello group,

I haven't posted in here for quite some time. Just have been busy. I have a 2005 Elantra hatchback. Just got my 33K service. I have had relatively few problems. The window and door lock control on the driver's side wouldn't raise and lower the passenger side window. My dealer replaced the entire console at no charge. The driver's side door window came loose and fell down inside the door. Dealer fixed it no charge. I had one tire that picked up a nail or something, and I got it replaced with a used tire with similar tread left on it from a local Goodyear dealer (tire couldn't be repaired). Otherwise, my tires seem to be holding up very well. At last check they still have plenty of tread left, according to my dealer, and brakes are in great shape. I must be blessed with a decent dealership. All my services have cost me much less than I expected. The 15K service came to about $173 and the 30K ran $420. The other services have run anywhere from $28 to $35. I haven't checked MPG for quite some time as almost all my driving has been in town, but I'm 59 and a pretty gentle driver. That seems to be why I haven't had many problems. I haven't been particularly happy with the windshield wipers. They are great on the up sweep but leave liquid on the window with the down sweep. I've asked the dealer to check them a couple of times and the dealer says they are fine. Still, I'm not real happy with them. Any suggestions for replacement wipers? I do use RainX on the windshield and that seems to help quite a bit.

I do have a question. At some point someone got my passenger back door with their back door, I suspect. I have a spot in the middle of my back door that is pushed in. Paint was not cracked or chipped and no actual crease in the door. It's just pushed in. I checked with my dealer's repair facility, and they told me it would be over $1,000.00 to fix. Said they would have to take off the back quarter panel and front passenger door, etc. to be sure paint matched up. This seems over the top. If paint was chipped or cracked or there was an actual crease in the door, then maybe, but this almost looks like if you could reach in behind it you could just push it back into place. In years past I remember seeing advertisements for a tool that was supposed to take minor dents out. You could get them at auto supply stores. Does anyone know if these are still available and do they work? Anyone had any experience with one of these? I'm disabled and on a very limited budget and a $1000 is virtually out of the question, yet the "dent" in that door bothers me. Sure would appreciate a less expensive method for pushing or pulling the skin back out into place.

Otherwise, I'm very happy with my Elantra and definitely would get another when it comes time to replace. I just hope Hyundai comes out with some kind of hatchback type vehicle by the time I need to replace mine. I love the hatchback. It has had some hauling duties and did them beautifully.
  • jlflemmonsjlflemmons Member Posts: 2,242
Ask around and find a good paintless dent repair shop. I have had repairs done before with that process and was impressed. If you find a guy who really knows what he is doing, you may find that the repair will be flawless, leaving no sign of the original dent.

And if the dent is as you say, your dealer is planning on doing the whole sanding, bondo, repaint and it really doesn't sound called for from your description.

I own an '04 Elantra with 48,000 miles on it.
Suddenly my gas mileage has dropped like a brick.
Where I was getting about 500 miles to a full tank of gas
    I'm now getting 375 to 400 miles!
    This occured almost overnight.
With gas prices at four bucks a gallon this is scary.
She runs good and idles smmoth.
No visible leaks or fuel odors.
Nobody punched a hole in my gas tank to siphon it off either.
I have no other complaints about this car for the four years I've owned it.
    Anyone have any advice/suggestions??

Have you tried different brands of fuel? I consistently will see lower mileage on Shell than Coastal (HEB supplier)
  • elantraownerelantraowner Member Posts: 16
Try running a can of Seafoam or other good injector cleaner through with your next tank of fuel. I was on trip last week in my 02 Elantra GT and it seemed to me that I also wasn't getting as good milage. Since I only had about 67K and had it tuned at 60K, so with new plugs etc, I would have expected good milage. I too was wondering what gives although it didn't seem as bad as yours. It could just be the sticker shock of the gas pump and I just seem to think I am putting more gas in due to the pain in the wallet. I have gotten about 34 mpg highway in the past. I will start monitoring it closer now.

I have a 2005 and 2006 Elantra. Both driven by my teenage kids so I'm very familiar with paintless dent repair for these vehicles.

I have used them on a number of occasions. One time for very similar door damage you describe. Each time they are done, the area is either totally restored to original condition or so close it's difficult to tell. I recommend them for this type of repair.

The best place to get a good one is through a large dealership. They often use this service for hail damage and have a few contractors numbers handy. Sometimes they willl lease space at the dealer and work right there.

The one gripe I have about these cars is the sheetmetal is a bit too thin as they dent easily. My friend has a 2008 Elantra which seems to have a much thicker skin. Good luck. --Jack
