The warranty they offered me was 7 years, I think, and was more than $1600. And they sprung it on me after I had closed the deal and was already a bit overwhelmed by the big purchase I was making.
In fact they "offered" me the following:
$420 for all oil changes, inspections and tire rotations for 36K (at every 3000 for oil changes).
$799 for LoJack
$499 for a policy that pays $5000 if the car is stolen and not recovered - with already engraved window numbers
$299 tire warranty for road hazards
and the
$1600 extended warranty.
That is more than $3600 in extras. I turned them all down. Any thoughts on whether that was right or wrong.
Any info on where to purchase a more affordable but reliable extended warranty?
By the way, on my first fill I got more than 27 MPG with about 1/2 of the miles in the city. And I like the rear spoilers, but it was not on the car when I bought it and have other things to spend my money on.
An extended warranty bought at purchase duplicates the factory warranty, except that it probably:
1) requires a deductible, where the factory warranty doesn't ( ! )
2) provides a rental car. For $900 to $1000 extra, it should. That's 45 days of rental. What are the chances of an Accord being out of commission that long during its first 3 years / 36k miles ?
At or before 3 years / 34k miles: Get the exended warrranty if still desired. It'll still be in the neighborhood of $800. Most providers will cover the car only if it's still within the last 1.5k miles of the factory warranty or before 36 mos.
Sure, you will hear about someone who paid $1000 for an extended warranty and had $5000 worth of repairs covered (10x the average). But for every one of these people, 9 more received nothing back for their money.
Personally, I bought a Honda because I believe they are unlikely to have any significant problems before 100k miles. My 1989 Accord that I traded for my 2003 had 215k miles and still had its original transmission, alternator, and starter, and the A/C compressor lasted 150k miles (10 years). I don't believe I will have to replace any of these before 100k miles.
If the peace of mind is worth the money, it is certainly your right and your choice to purchase the warranty. But from a purely statistical and financial standpoint, it is not to your advantage. Some people bet that they WILL have problems; I bet that I WON'T.
I know some people think it's a waste of money, but for me it's a peace of mind.
Parts do fail pre-maturely sometime. And labor cost is expensive these days.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Health insurance is (or should be) mandatory because medical bills can bankrupt all but the wealthiest people. Same is true for insuring against other major catastrophes like title insurance, fire, etc.
Peace of mind does matter--I paid $168 for trip cancellation, etc. insurance for a trip to China last month. I can afford the loss of the trip's cost, but I wanted to eliminate any worries prior to and during the trip. It was a psychological decision, certainly not an economic one.
If you feel better about buying a warranty, the freedom from anxiety can only prolong your life.
I didn't buy an extended warranty for my '04 Accord EX-L because I thought I was buying a car that wouldn't need major mechanical work while I owned it. I could be mistaken and in any case can afford to make repairs if needed when the car's 3 year warranty expires.......Richard
be sure to buy it from Honda or your credit union. the others seem to go out of business or have too many "catches"...

The larger the amount of a particular vehicle sold will usually lower the loss ratio thus will lower the premium.
Actually, here it appears that DC and Toyota are about the same as Honda. Ford/GM appear to be somewhat less costly on insurance than Honda.
There was only ONE Accord available...an LX in Satin Silver.
Impressions:
The new wheel covers are nicer
The taillights really don't look that much different...all red with the reverse indicator in white
that's about it...
After looking at some of the 04 EX and EXV6 models, I kind of wish I had gotten an EXV6 instead of my Altima
Oh well, after I finish college, I will buy one.
Look at what time it was when I posted it..
LOL
August sales data
Accord 37,878
Camry 35,612
Altima 20,182
Mazda 6 5,575
Maxima 6,146
So maybe people are starting to grow on the looks of the Accord? I have always liked the way it looks though
Maybe I am in the minority because I liked the Maxima too (I own a V6 Accord by the way) and it looks like it is not doing well?
I think the Maxima sales problem is due to the Altima on the low side and the Infiniti G35 on the high side. The Altima is arguably better looking and has plenty of room and a great engine. Now that the interior has been improved, I'm sure few people see the need to spend $4000 or so more for a Maxima. You can get a G35 for not much more.
The Accord is a great value if one can be past the rear end.
That aside I took another look at the 04 Accord again today but find it difficult to get past the design of the lights (front and rear).
The Ralliart and XRS are my current options. Nothing fantastic but nothing that looks disappointing either. To get 4w disc brakes and a sunroof in the Accord you need to get the EX-L (a slower and more expensive car).
I am confused by Honda's assessment of the current market, yet must admit that they are selling more cars.
I mean, I don't find the Altima all that nice and the 350Z's interior makes the whole car look bad. But most reviewers like it.
i'm doing an informal poll...how many of you have received your recall notice on the automatic tranny? and if you did, are you leasing or buying your accord? i'm just wondering if honda is recalling bought accords first...cause i haven't heard boo about this from honda yet...
Will call them in a few days.
Bought my 03EXV6 in Nov 2002.
I also have quite a laundry list in addition to the tranny recall:
1. Door seals squeeking again
2. Front brakes shuttering
3. Driver door (internal vibration)
4. Center console door rattling
5. Steering column rattle
6. Rear deck vibration
7. Front end alignment
Anyone else have this many rattles?
Mine doesn't have a single rattle.
BTW, no rattles... just about to turn 20,000 miles.
as for rattles...i still have a headliner rattle up around the map lights...the glove box door sometimes rattles. there is also a come and go rattle somewhere in the dash...
btw, there are tsbs out on the rear deck rattle and center console door rattle.
The car was updated though even before I got the notice - called my dealer told them I am going on a long trip (which was not a lie) and set up an appointment for me (that was a month ago)
thank you very much!
no recall notice here either. but my 2003 EX-V6 was built in July 03, purchased in 9/03, so i bet i will be last in the cycle. my car is part of the recall per the website.
The next available repair date is mid Oct.
It's OK with me. I will have a loaner for the repair.
