I havent had a single mechanical problem with the car. Just the hatch not opening, which has been fixed, and the tires, which I have replaced. So...is it worth it to buy an extended warranty for the car? From an after market company, NOT GM. I might keep it 6 more months, I might keep it a year. I have been thinking about getting a year old HHR instead. To have a bigger 'car', and hopefully 2 years more warranty on a car. or whatever it is considered to be. But I dont know if they are reliable,or fun to drive or if they ride like a truck or a car or anything about them.
And I am at a whopping 11,000 miles at the 3 year mark, no mechanical problems, minor interior issues that annoy me, but I have 2 months left to get them fixed. So..if spending like $800-1100 for a 5 year more warranty worth it...even though I might only keep it a year at most. Thats all I can seem to find...nothing shorter. I have never in 30 years of driving not had a warranty covered car. Or should I trade in and get myself a Honda Accord, that I have wanted for 20 years!! They never brake down. My Civic never did..and that is the only car I kept for 5 years, in my life!
If my Aveo got 30 mpg like it is suppose to, I would keep it and get the warranty. But at 18-20 at the most, and that is by driving like an old lady, it isn't a super economy car. I rather have a Yaris! Or an HHR if I am going to get 18mpg. Any opinions? I have 2 months left to go..and I do that the powertrain coverage that I didnt know I had! Till 2011? I think that is what GM customer service just told me. So the transmission is STILL covered at least! So...what should I do? :confuse:
So..do our engines sound like this under heavy acceleration? Or do I have a problem?
And also. At 3 years,BUT ONLY 11,000 miles, do I worry about replacing the timing belt, or do I follow the 60K mile replacement that everyone talks about? I figure that with such low mileage, I wait till I hit the 60K mark...right? Or does the 3 years make a difference? :confuse: :confuse: Guess thats enough questions. any input would be great.

It's good to see Toyota in financial trouble also. They are asking their government for 2-billion as of this week.
When did you guys changed your timimg belt? right on 60K miles?
I went to class action world and I am trying to start a class action suit because there was a recall on chevy aveos for the idler/timing belt problem but only for specific cars....problem is...the problem is on all of their engines for chevy aveos and they know it. We just need enough people to come forward.
I contacted class action world and am interested in having others make a complaint and join in on a class action suit with GM because they are screwing people.
I will not reccomend a purchase of a chevy aveo, the timing belt / idler issue is very dangerous because when the idler gets stuck at full-throttle, the timing belt snaps and your car cannot go any more..on the road that can be life threatening. I have replaced one engine so far and the second motor did the same thing to me. I had to replace the engine myself at 98,000 miles because it was no longer under warranty. I've put so much money into this car it isn't even funny and I'm done with it completely. I still owe money on the loan but it is that bad that I am going to leave it on the side of the road and wait for the loan company to reposess it. That's how extreme it is. GM will do nothing to make up for their faulty engines if you are past warranty and they like to pretend that there is nothing going on with their cars. They are dangerous.

I get the feeling it is one of 3 things, either a fuel pump problem, clogged injectors, or a tank of bad gas. I put about 7 gallons in it yesterday, from a station I go to nearly all the time. BUT it was running fine until I filled up yesterday. So that makes me think it is bad gas, with dirt or water in it? BUT if the gas is bad, and it clogged up the injectors, wouldnt it run bad all the time? It runs fine once I get going, it is as fast/smooth as usual.
Below 15mph, it chugs and almost stalls, unless I giggle the gas pedal. Anyone have any ideas? Does the 50,000 mile powetrain warranty cover the fuel system? I intend to call GM tomorrow and ask them, but does anyone know what this could be IF it isnt covered? The warranty ended just 1 week ago,and it only has 11,000 miles on it! It shouldnt have this problem, and i shouldnt have to fix a problem like this. But if i do..I have put in a bottle of concentrated fuel system cleaner, hoping if it is clogged injectors this stuff might work. I doubt it will, but I have used it before and its only $8.00.
But does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? It runs fine once i get going. It doesnt backfire or anything like that. Did i get a bad load of gas? Is it the fuel filter, that I hear is IN the gas tank...THAT is that would be VERY expensive to be replaced and i wont put in that kind of money for a repair. I'd trade it in on something else. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
Luckily it was a 'free' fix. But IF it had been a costly repair,GM said they would have paid for it or paid up to 99% of it, since I have such low miles, and that my warranty had just run out, and they have a 'payment assistance program', I didnt know about that...did any of you?? That helps people pay for costly repairs. Anyway, a stupid tiny vacuum hose, that fell off cause all this havoc! I can only imgine what happens when something BIG goes wrong! Wow!
I'm in my 50's and all or children are moved out.
How does this car handle on the highway?
In the snow?
Is it powerful enough for luggage and such for a cross country trip? (new-york state - - - california) I have to cross the rockies.
I've never owned a car before only vans and S.U.V.'s
I want something economical, dependable and safe.
I need help and advice with my decision.
Thank you!
I live in Calgary, Canada, so, driving in snow (and through the Canadian Rockies) is something I can totally attest to. As long as you have a good set of winter tires, you are fine. Not one accident/near miss to date (touch wood). The trunk is kinda tiny, but you can always put the back seats down and pack to your hearts content. I have moved 4 times, using my car as my moving truck. lol. I actually folded the back seats down and fitted a patio table and 4 chairs in there. It was impressive really!! The interior is very spacious, even thought it seems small from the outside. No problem with tall people knocking their heads on the roof or anything like that. Sometimes in windy conditions it is a little sketch, as the car is really light and if there is a big enough gust, you really feel it. Or like a big semi passing by...but, not like you are gonna fly off the road or anything, you can just fill it pull a bit.
All in all, i think it is the ideal economical, dependable and safe car.
My car is paid off next year and I have no intention of replacing it! I have only had a few minor repairs that I had to make on it. Just make sure you watch the warranty program correctly, and you will have no problems.
Good luck. You cant really go wrong.
Calgary...what a nice place, we went there in 1980 for the "Stampede" and my brother in law lives in Red Deer and also lived in Olds. He might work in Fort McMurray next year.
I was born and still living in Ottawa, Ontario.
We are planning a trip with friends from Albany N.Y. to California next year (each our own car) but I'm looking forward to buying a new car before leaving.
I like the Aveo but what bothers me a bit is crossing the Rockies. with a 1.6 L engine. Will it be powerful enough?
By what you said in your post... guess so.
Thank you!
How long was your trip?
Type of road travelled?
How does this Aveo 5 performed in the mountains? (Appalachians, Rockies or steep hills).
On a long stretch of highway?
Does 5 h/p bring a big difference in a car?
I might buy one but I'm still wondering.
I only do city commuting but I take 1 long vacation trip every year crossing the Appalachians or the Rockies.
Would this car be powerful enough to cross those steep mountains?
First, seat comfort was excellent. I have a bad back and had no problems throughout the trip. Fuel economy was a solid 40 mpg. At times in Colorado I had to climb some very steep grades and have to say the car struggled. And my vacation was a solo trip (cant imagine how worse it would have been with additional passengers/weight). But taxing the engine wasnt that common and overall it had enough power for most situations.
I plan on replacing my car within the next 6 months. So I have had a chance to check out the the current Aveo hatchback. Definate improvement over the older model I drove. But I actually like the Hyundai Elantra Touring better and it may be my next purchase.
Any advice before I make my move?
I really don't know if I should because once it's done it's to late.
Could you tell me what you like or dislike about your Aveo?
Thank You!
I have a 2007 Aveo 5 with a manual tranny and I really love it. I traded in a 1999 Ford Crown Vic,so I really downsized. I find the Aveo roomier than one would think. I drive about 60 miles a day back and forth to work(about75%) highway and average 33 mph! Droppes a Kenwood cd player and Sirius sat. radio in it and I'm lovin' it. 30,000 miles and so far no problems.
Cheers,
Steve
If so, Why?
If not, Why?
There are tons of cool features. Sunroof, awesome stereo with 6 speakers and controls on the steering wheel, cruise, 6 disc cd in dash, fog lamps, power everything, etc etc. Good luck. I will probably trade in the next year or so for an Aveo 5.
I'd like to know if there's any major changes for the 2010 model.
I had to replace the tire pressure sensor due to the fact the the guy who changed my tire broke it. But the "low pressure" light on the dash board will not go out. How do I reset it?
2008 Aveo hatchback
Thanks
Lenny
The 50,000 km (30k mile) mark is coming up. The manual recommended the following things:
- replace passenger compartment air filter
- engine air filter
- replace spark plugs
- coolant flush
- change brake fluid
- inspect a whole whack of things; and
- the usual oil change, tire roation etc.
All this for regular driving, not "short trips".
I don't recall doing all this at 50 k (30k miles) for any of my cars. Googling reveals that spark plug replacement is because this car uses copper core spark plugs whereas most GM cars use platinum ones.
Is it just me, or does the maintenance demands seem a bit much?
- sandy.
All the aggravation leads me to jus follow the preventive maintenance schedule to the letter. A stalled car in my situation is very problematic. (lost work hours and so on). I'm thinking now that the savings in this case may not be worth the aggravation.

We are crossing the Rocky Mountains in the state of Colorado.
Is the Aveo 5 with its 1.6 L., 4 cylinder, 106 h/p engine, automatic transmission strong enough to do this or I might get myself in trouble doing it? (overheating, transmission/engine problems) ect...
Any advice would be appreciated by anyone or drivers/owners who drove the Rocky Mountains.
Thank You!
About 35 years ago I drove a carbureted car across the Rockies and back. The worst aspect is that at very high altitudes the air is much thinner, and that affected the carb mixture (slow, sluggish performance). The car ran perfectly again after I returned to sea level. However, on modern cars such as yours virtually everything is electronically controlled. I would imagine the computer will compensate for the variation in the air/fuel mixture requirement, so performance might not be affected at all.
The rough grades going up the Rockies is what makes me a bit nervous about mechanical problems.
I think I have heard that at high altitudes, you should go for higher octane gas, to make up for the thinner air and the fuel/air mixture. But as others have said, all cars today are so controlled by computers, they compensate for altitude issues. But I would pack lightly, our little car is not built to haul a lot of heavy things,as I am sure you know. The lighter the car, the better and faster it will climb a hill/mountain. Have fun!
I could go on, but I would run out of space in this post. Needless to say I detest this car.
I dont get the amazing mileage that people talk about in here, I am lucky to get 17mpg! in the city. I got better mileage in my Ford Ranger pickup that had a V-6 in it, that I traded in on this car, at the height of the gas crisis.
And Chevy insists that it is because I only drive like 4 miles at a time,so the cars engine doesn't get really heated up. So, I am keeping it, till I pay it off and or it breaks down in a big way. I have had no mechanical problems at all since I bought it. I have had tons of trim problems, and the hatch itself has been worked on like 15 times! For creaking, not unlocking ,rattles, wiper not working. But so far not a single mechanical problem.
It is a super cheap car, so what did you expect when you bought it? I love the rock hard seats, they are to soft now, they use to feel like Mercedes seats, but 3 years of wear, has made the drivers seat to soft for my taste. If you expected great seats, tons of room, and all the luxury of a bigger car....why did you buy the Aveo? I dont mean this to sound like I am picking on you, but you did test drive it,didnt you? Didnt you feel the seat? See the room that the car has? And yet you have now had it for 5 years. Why? :confuse:
The new Aveo is a bit nicer, and next years is going to be better, then when they stop making it and replace it with the new car they are coming out with, I think it is called 'The Bea't and another one as well. They are coming out with a hot racer version, and one that is more 'luxury'. And it is kind of like the Honda element. A lot of those plastic panels and very odd colors, a totally new design. I will probably buy one of those. They were in the last Transformers movie! Both of them. Along with the 2011-2012 Corvette, and then the 2 versions of the replacement for the Aveo. And they are finally bringing over colors from Japan and Europe. Really odd and cool colors.
But if you detest it, sell it or trade it in. I know what you mean about soft wheels, I nearly lost a wheel in a pothole and was shocked. I bitched about it and Chevy replaced it, under warranty. Even though they said it wasnt covered. I complained for months and they finally replaced it. But I only had like 2K miles on it in 1 year! So I was ticked off, and threw a fit in front of a lot of customers, and they replaced it finally to calm me down If the economy wasnt so crappy and if i didnt owe so little and have such low miles on it, I would trade it in tomorrow. But my hatchback has a ton of room, tons of headroom, lots of vision out the windows, it is very big for a tiny car. But I dont know about the sedan, you must have that one.
If you hate it so much, get rid of it.">
But hey, it isnt your car, so you don't have to pay for the repairs, do you? So when the company gets another car, tell them your experiences with the Aveo, if they dont know, they must know, and ask if they can go bigger on the next one.
Be glad you have a job, let alone a job with a car! Wow! I would kill to get that job! :surprise: And you must have an upgraded stereo, mine is just the base one with a cd player, and it is just ok...you must have the top of the line one, lucky again.
