I have had my 2005 tacoma double cab for 3 months, 4000 miles and I have begun to hear a high pitched buzzing sound coming from the front of my windshield. It happens when I am driving in strong wind or when I am driving fast (80mph+). I have checked the seals around the windshield, the wipers, the antenna, but I have yet to find the source of this noise. Has anyone else experienced this noise? It is really annoying.

I just read on page 100 of the May/June Truck Trend magazine that your truck will get better mileage with the tailgate UP. I guess putting your tailgate down for better MPG was just a Myth. According to the Editor the air forms a pocket in the bed and prevents the air that's flowing over the cab from going down into the bed. Like an invisible tonneau cover. Just thought you guys might want to know. Keep the gate up.

I'm not happy that others have ticking brand new '05 V6 engines in their Tacomas. However, I'm pleased that I'm not the only one complaining. On another forum a guy described it as a brand new ticking POS. I wouldn't go that far. At the same time, I'd like mine to be fixed. The only way that'll get done is if enough people make a formal complaint. If you have time to post away on the newsgroups, you certainly have time to call Toyota corporate and politely insist that your complaint is on the record. Do that at the dealer during your next scheduled service appointment and make sure that you get a receipt with your complaint. THAT is how Toyota engineers get info from the field in order to create a fix. BUT, there must be a volume of complaints on the record for them to even consider a fix. That's how it works.

Here's something to think about: If you go to buy a used vehicle and on the test drive you hear the motor TICKING upon accelerating, is that the vehicle you buy? A ticking motor is a red flag to anyone with a clue. That's something to think about if you're one to sell your vehicle privately. Hopefully the buyer is clueless or will buy Toyotas bull about it being perfectly normal. It's not normal. It is PECULIAR to the vehicle and the V6 engine at best.

I really like the truck, but I want the ticking fixed. If you feel the same then formally complain. It's the only way Toyota will be motivated to do something about it. That's a fact.

    Hello pb2themax,

If you check out two of my earlier posts - 2681 and 2803, you find some info on pricing and exterior pix of the shell on my tacco. You'll see my tacco is a d-cab lb w/ V6. It has the TRD sport package w/ the 17" alum rims and crappy Dunlops. That'll change in the future before next winter. No lift either. Not much of an off roader anymore except for camping. Did mudrunning and hillclimbing in my younger and crazier days w/ a lifted dodge ramcharger and super swampers.

    pb2themax,
I thought about that but I also have a rack that goes in my truck that I use to haul kayaks , canoe or ladders on and the bed bolts are in the wrong place to work with the rack that I made. If anyone needs any ideas on a rack I may have some pics if I can find them.
My 01 tacoma is what I made the rack for and since I now have a 05 I have to rework it a little. I like the one I made better than anything that you can buy because nothing touches the paint anywhere, the only thing the rack touches is the bottom of the bed and it works great. I have made 4 trips to Canada with it which is about 2400 miles round trip and it has never moved a inch.
You know it nice to get a new truck but its not so fun getting everything set up the way you like it. LOL

I think I have found a remedy for the leaf spring problem. Basically, it is the sound of the two leaves banging together...two flat surfaces "clapping" together. I sanded the bottom overload spring and the one above it and it is instantly gone. I have jumped up and down on the bumper, which is normally how I would make it happen, and have driven it and the jumped some more and nothing.

The two springs cannot "clap" anymore since the surfaces are not perfectly flat. Fixed!!

For everyday driving you will probably rarely use it if ever, but for anyone that off roads heavily will find this to be a timely feature. Check over on TTORA as well.

Yes it is a myth. Trucks are designed to get the best mileage with the gate up. I still see many people riding along with them down though.

I've got another use that all you warm weather folks might not think of. When I head outside in January up here in VT and it's -20 degrees and I want to start my truck without hopping in all covered in snow (from shoveling it out), I can just pop it into neutral, press the button, and fire it up without having to climb in.

Probably great for off-roaders as well.

    OK. Thanks.

My TRD Sport came with some nice Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires, and all the other Tacos on the lot had Bridgestone's too, including the Off Road TRDs. May be a regional thing?

I worked out a deal with my dealer and when I left the lot I had a set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos on my truck. I ran these on my 2001 Tacoma and they are a great tire, I would reccommend the Revos to anyone.
The BF's that were on my truck were the same ones that came on my 2001 and they were wore out at 21,000 miles. When I sold my '01 I had put 34,000 miles on the Revos and they still had another 6 or 8 thousand miles left on them.

I've experienced it, but just once. I also was driving in excess of 80 mph and the noise almost gave me a heart attack. High pitched, very loud and seemed to be coming from the passenger side of the windshield. I slowed down a bit and the noise subsided. Then a bit later, when I resumed 80+ speed, the noise was no longer there. When the noise was going on at full blast, I noticed there was a strong cross wind as well as the 80+ mph forward motion. I'm not sure if that was an important contributing factor, but it seemed to be since the noise did not recur despite resumption of full speed.

I've read postings from others on TundraSolutions describing the same sort of noise, but I haven't seen any solutions nor have I heard others mention the strong cross wind thing. By the way, some folks mentioned a noise that was only heard when the radio volume was down. That is not my noise. I could have been in the front row of a rock concert with my head against the speakers and I would have heard this noise over the music.

Still waiting on my "preferenced" DC TRD...

On post 2782, the pictures show what looks like the TRD off road package wheels. The truck, however, is not a TRD off road. Matter of fact, looks like a long bed; and I thought you can't get the off road package with the long bed. I don't care for the optional aluminum wheels that are coming on SR5's in my region. They are not pictured in the brochure.

Why can't Toyota give the Tacoma a smooth and quiet V6 engine like in my Sienna? Of course it's a tad less powerful than the Tacoma's V6 but I know Toyota can make quiet and smooth V6's. Guess because its a truck. But hey, we're paying enough for this thing.

Anyone know exactly what size the rear speakers on the Access cab are? I've heard 6.5, but I want to know for sure.

....yes I could acually take the panel off and measure, but I won't be able to do that for a few days. Would like to know now so I can look into buying a new pair. Any help from someone who already knows would be greatly appreciated. :)

Does anyone know where to acquire front splash guards for a 4x2 Access Cab? Or should I get stock PreRunner flaps instead? If anyone has any available, I would be interested.

I posted this up a couple of days ago but didn't receive any responses.
I looked over at Tundrasolutions.com but couldn't get in, paid subscription i think. They said that its available in Japan, does anyone here know about a supercharger for the 2005 Tacoma?

I'm very interested in installing a supercharger into my 6spd Access Cab Sport Package Tacoma.
    Thanks.

Nothing available yet. I heard that it will be aftermarket not TRD. Have no idea to the validity of that info.

You can join tundra solutions without paying, you just don't get full access without paying. I recommend paying the the mods forum alone is worth it IMO

I should be getting the factory manual in a few days. If no one for sure says anything, I'll be able to tell you then what size the speakers are. I imagine, that they are 6.5" though.

Got a pretty good deal. A guy on eBay is selling all 3 of them, starting at $199. They usually go around $250-300, but it's still a much better deal than buying from the dealer or 3rd party at $400+.

The bed mat is arguably the single most useful and important accessory that you can purchase. And it's probably the best "bang for you buck", as well. Get it and don't think twice. Thank me later.

Hi volley. I've got to say that I have no ticking sound. DC LB Pre-Runner TRD Sport with 2500 miles. (Although, I never hear my wife yelling at me, either!!)

megamole - Finally, a kindred spirit!! I've got no leaks, ticking, or surges. My paint hasn't chipped and my brakes work just fine. No swirls on the interior and my DC LB Pre-Runner TRD Sport was built in the good ole US of A. But my gas mileage pretty much sucks. Although, my 17.5 mpg average each tank isn't that much worse than I got on my '97 4-cylinder 4-Runner, so I'm not complaining too much. (But it sure would be dandy to hit those elusive "20's" !!!)

I added a 5th picture that shows the coating that is applied to the bottom
6" from start of the front door to the front of the rear fender, it is not on the flare, only on the paint. I don't know if this was applied before paint chipping became an issue. My truck was built 3/05

A friend of mine just got his silver double cab 4x4 last week and has the same coating on it. His was built in Canada.

You can't notice the coating except for where it ends near the rear drivers side tire. It just looks like a bit of dirt has gathered there so you can see the edge.

I put my "order" in yesterday and changed my mind again about the color. I finally decided on Silver.

I have a DC Long bed 4X4 towing package Tacoma with auto transmission. The last couple of trips to Maine I got 23MPG at 60MPH. It is a pain driving that slow, but with prices of gas going up it's worth getting the better mileage. At 65MPH I was getting 20MPG. I use premium gas (octane 93) & feel its worth it. The performance of the engine is great!! I've got just about 2800 miles on my Tacoma.

I'm hoping someone who has experience with lifting trucks can answer some of my questions on how it will change the ride and feel of my 05 4x4 sport access taco.

    1. How will a 3" lift affect the handling on curvy roads?
    2. What will it do to mpg's?
    3. Will it affect my toyota warranty?
    4. will 3" cause a lot more lean in turns?

    Thanks for any replies.

Clutch start cancel is pretty much an off-road thing. Some folks wire around the clutch pedal switch, so the truck can be started in gear, and without a foot on the pedal. This is handy if you're holding the truck in place with the brake, and need to restart.

It's only available on the 6sp manual, as autos don't have a clutch to cancel.

    Don''t offroad? Don't use it.

How many of you folks who worry about this "noise" have owned other Toys?

Toyota engines sound slightly different than other makes. Relax and enjoy a supremely well made vehicle.

I've owned Toyotas for the last 15 years. I have 3 Toyota pickups. My '86 sounds like a geriatric sewing machine. It's nearly always sounded like that. I'm used to noises. However, having dropped close to $35K on a vehicle 20 years later I expect much better. My sister has a Sequoia. My Mom has a Camry. My brother has a Highlander. NONE have a ticking engine for the love of Pete! I'm not worried about the ticking, I just want it stopped by the manufacturer that caused it. No biggie. I can't foist defects upon my customers so I don't want defects foisted upon me.

I like using a mix 93 octane (5 gallons) and the rest 87 and yesterday I got 22 exactly (5.01 gallons for 109.8 miles) on the highway with a small amount of in town. I drove 63-65 mph with a little of 80 mph. I would say it is doing good. I have 4400 miles on it. It is a D-cab, V6 LB auto. and of course Red.

I know what you mean...I wish that aluminum blocks did not have so many noises, but with 4 valves per. there is a lot of noise making going on.

I noticed that when I stomp it...the noise goes away totally. I am sure it is getting drowned out by the sound of a V8 it makes.

Oh, I have owned the '92 pickup, 3 Camrys, Echo (for daughter) Sequoia, a T-100 and now the Taco. All good vehicles and bought new except for the Echo.

Hola! Which model of Xtang did you install? Does it use the Tacoma siderails to secure the framework and did you loose movement of the sliding tiedowns? Does it overlap the bedcaps ( the black PU bed caps on each side) or is it inside the PU bed? I am cosidering the Tonno or Saber as I do not want a snap-on version. I am in AZ, based on your early assesment, how do you think the tonno will stand up to elements over time?

That is exactly what is happening to me. The problem is that I live in a windy city and most of my driving is highway, so the noise happens quite often. Of course on the rare days that there is no strong wind, there is no noise. There has to be some sort of sealant or rubber tubing to fix this problem. Hopefully this forum will provide me with answers. At least I know that I am not the only one that has experienced this problem.

I took my truck in again to have the ticking looked at. I ended up having a conversation with a couple of sales reps and a couple of techs. They all indicated that it was due to the fule injectors. I asked them how many complaints Toyota would take before recalling. No response. Other than the random noises, my truck is great. Just not a huge fan of the diesel sounding engine...lol

    newtaco,

That coating is on all of the Tacomas, I had a 2001 and now I have a 2005 (made 1/05) both trucks had/have this coating. It looks like it would be really good at stopping chips but it is not. I have several chips on my 05 and they are all in the coating and I only have 1,100 miles on it.
I did not think I was getting any chips until I decided to wax my truck, if you have a dark color you will really see the chips when you wax your truck.
I dont like the running boards and they would seem to get in the way off-road but I have to do something, I may look at extending my front mud flaps this weekend and see it that helps any.
If anyone has any better ideas please share them with us.

I guess that the speakers you are using are smaller than the stock ones and you are trying to fill in the space? I would use 1/4" plywood. I plan on doing that with the front speaker mounts. The whole is for a 6x9" but I'm going to use a component set of JL audio speakers, which is a 6.5" speaker that is mated with a separate tweeter. I'll mount it in the stock tweeter location. Then I plan on adding a 8" JL sub and amp behind the rear seat. Or for the sub enclosure I might do something with that storage box under the rear driver side seat of my Double Cab.

I don't know a whole lot about lifting vehicles but I did hear that you shouldn't lift the suspension more than 2.5" as any higher will wear out the constant velocity joins on the front suspension.

"brodeyo" - Good morning. I really like the look and concept of the Extang Tuff Tonneau III (although my favorite so far - via internet research only - is the fold-a-cover, which won't be available until may or june and is supposed to cost $600.00+). I was wondering...did you already order it? How high above the bed does it sit? Does it seem like it will last as long as the truck? Was install at all tricky with our unique '05 Taco bed system? Thanks for the info. :)

I had a 2004 taco. and it was white I had it for exactly a year before buying the 05 I think I washed it twice and it never looked very dirty. I have a black one now and it is constantly dirty... I went with black for two reasons, 1. It was what they had... 2. I don't like the light colors i.e. white silver tan as much as the dark ones this year but that was personal pref. White stays cooler in the summer which matters here in S.D. Cali. and the paint won't "fade". White seems to have a higher resale value then other colors. Hope this helps. JD
