Intermittent starting problem. Electrical problem?
Car won't start.
Sometimes turning key from "off" to "on" position nothing happens. No lights, bells, etc ...
Sometimes turning key from "off" to "on" everything is OK. I get lights, bells, etc ... But, when turning to the "start" position all lights go off and no sounds. No starter clicking or anything.
If I fiddle with the battery cables. Wiggle them, take them off and put them back on again. It will start. Not sure if I have to consistently take them off to get a start.
It will start again for about the next one to two hours. If I wait overnight it won't start. Have to mess with the cables again.
Battery and alternator have been tested at Autozone. Battery retested at Sears. Everything OK.
Any ideas. I am afraid this is going to cost a lot more money.
Took it to a shop and it wouldn't happen for them. But, that was when it was working more than not. And now it is more not.
Idiots confession - after reading some on the web I thought it had to be an ignition switch problem. Guy at the shop wasn't sure but, I told him to go ahead and replace it since it was my wife's car. I guessed incorrectly ... $250.
Have done some searching but, have not found this problem described online.
Any help would be appreciated.

On your starter there is a small wire conected to the solinoid. This wire powers your starter to start. This power comes from your switch through an alarm if you have one, to a relay, through a harness down to the starter. If you can connect a cheep remote starter switch to it and a visible 12v light wired in. The next time it doesn't start, see if the light lights ups when you turn the key. If it doesn't, its something interfering with the power going down to your starter. Then to get on your way, hit the remote starter switch with the key in the run position. If this light does light up when you try and crank it, and it doesn't crank. Bad starter most likely or not enough voltage to that wire, only enough to light up the light. If it will start now with the remote starter switch, then you deffinitely have something interfering with the proper voltage of about 12 volt + or - about a half volt.
I don't quite know what may be the cause, and what will take to fix it??? Your opinion will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!!
It's been in the shop 6 times to troubleshoot..anyone else have this sort of problem and can give me some advice?
Thanks!!
there is a clunk in the front suspension. A local repair chain told me it was the lower ball joints. I've replace them and while I was in there I replaced the uppers and the tie-rod ends also. I still have a clunk. It happens when I'm turning left or right.
What's left that could be clunking in there.

I've purchased an 02 Montero Sport 4x4-3.5L
It seems to be funny, but after I took it in for a major timing belt, tensionner, water pump, tune up, radiator change, I notice that when engine it is cold it has a noise at start up. This noise will go away as engine warms up and it will be performing properly right after.
Also my "service engine soon" light came on and it says misfiring at cylinder 1 (if the person at the shop read it correct).
Is this something that I should be concerned in the near future? As I said, after less than a minute the noise is going away.
I also use synthetic oil (5w30) and yesterday I did add some additive (Motor Protect made by Lubro Molly), as the vehicle it has less than 83k miles on it.
Your opinion and a possible advice will be greatly appreciated!!!
If it is a high pitch noise, you have a belt problem (serpentine etc.) Which one would be hard to determine: all belts had to be replaced in my former 2005 BMW 325xi to have this cold start noise to disappear.
Cheers
One thing that ticks me off is the fact that I get that "engine service soon" light coming on...and the code it points to misfire at cyl 1 or so...
It gets a little confusing at my end...
Thank you much!!!
Thanks

Did replacing your circuit board fix the problem?

was at normal teperature. I too changed the temp sending unit and the thermostat, to make sure that was not the problem. I found out right away the problem was not fixed yet. I almost bought a new fan clutch, and a new water pump, but lucky me I happened to have a complete extra gauge cluster that I had picked up at junkyard for 150.00dlls, and I decide to change it myself before moving on to the fan or water pump. The problem got fixed, and has not done that anymore.
I am looking for some help for a DIY and some pointers..
Thanks

Ok i had to change my battery and then i entered the radio code in but i still can not get my car to get a normal idle back any ideas???
Error codes indicate the sensor 1/bank 1 O2 sensor is causing my check
engine light to come on once the engine warms up on my Montero. It
appears that sensor is located on the drivers (left side) and I have a
couple of questions I'm hoping someone may be able to answer. First,
how do I determine if it's a California or Federal model sensor (and
if I erred on the replacement, would it matter)? - I don't live in
California...
Next, what's the easiest access to this sensor? It appears that
perhaps popping loose the mud flapping material may allow access
through the wheel well. Thought I'd look for someone with experience
before getting into this.
Finally, I'm somewhat inclined to purchase the OEM replacement and was
looking at the Bosch replacement from Autozone. They also sell a
'universal' Bosch that is supposed to work fine. Anyone have opinions
on this? Any help is greatly appreciated.
