Brian - I'm in the market and looking to buy within the next 2-3 weeks. Not sure how Labor Day effects quotas and dealer willingness to discount. Can you tell me what should my timeline be? Start negotiating next week and catch them the last few days of August?
Or will Labor Day be naturally busy so I should wait until the first days of September?
In MASSACHUSETTS, looking to grab a Honda CRV EX-L if I can get a deal, or a well equipped Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium.
stayghost - My recent quote from Boch Honda for EX-L AWD (with no option or accessories) is $26,334. It was few weeks ago. I found Cambridge Honda has the lowest price in greater Boston area for EX-L AWD with Nav (no accessories) for $27,400. The same car that I am looking for would cost $300 more at Boch. I did not get a quote for the EX-L AWD from Cambridge but I'd imagine it would be few hundreds less than Boch on all trims.
lok888 - thanks for the headsup. Maybe the timing will help loosen them up, we'll see what Brian says. Did you pull the trigger? I'm in Central MA so I suppose I should check some RI/CT/NH places as well.

Both SUV's are a excellent choice. You should consider the New 2015 Forester very nice!!!!!
I would reach out to about 10 to 12 MA dealers the last few days of this month with your target price to buy that day.. If need be holding out till the 31th or into Sept. Time is on your side.
Brian, as well as owners from Illinois, I wanted to get your opinion on a good target for the CRV EX-L with Navi in Chicagoland area. I know the dealer invoice is $29,404 so I should be aiming for a sale price of around 27.5K. I have found a dealer that's about an hour and a half drive from my house that has the car I want listed at around the invoice price with the below options already installed. The options are exactly what I want and am willing to pay for. According to Honda.com, here's how the breakdown should be:
Looking at this, an OTD price of about $29.5 seems to be a good deal. Please comment on what I should be aiming for. Based on your suggestions, I will get in touch with the dealer and try to get a sale price as well as an OTD price before negotiations.
I also have a 2004 Lexus RX330 with about 148K miles that I will be trading in. I would describe it in average conditions with some paint chips and a ecent size dent on the rear quarter panel. It looks like $7,000 is around the most I can expect to get out of it. Any advice on how to approach this would also be greatly appreciated.
aeropatel - According to Honda.com, I got $31,450 MSRO ($830 dest charge included) for EX-L AWD with Nav. It is different than your number. However, $27.4K (with dest. charge) is a lowest price that I got in MA. It is pretty close to your quote.
Are you adding all these accessories? That is like $3000 extra.
I've been told by a local dealer in MA that dealers must give price quote on new cars with destination charge included. It is the law here. The destination charge is part of MSRP. Dealers can't add the destination charge on the top their price quote. Isn't it right?
Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure where the difference is coming from in the MSRP but the dealer's posted sale price of around 29.5k includes all the options I listed. This is before any negotiations. Since so many options are already included in the sale price, if I can negotiate the sale price to around 27.5, I would close the deal.
You need to get 2k plus below invoice price = 27,404 { destination Included } to compensate dealers charges on accessories. With all those mentioned accessories it puts you at 29,746. Add dealers doc fee charge , taxes, and tags for your out the door price. Expect to take a hit on your trade. Dealer will have to send your vehicle to be auctioned. You will never get 7k from a dealer for your Lexus.
Your models invoice price w/ dest charge of 830= 29,404. Msrp should not matter work down from the invoice price.
On this vehicle 2k plus below invoice will compensate you from dealer making $$$, on the accessories installed on vehicle.
Hi, does anyone have any insight on pricing for Southern California? We are looking for a CR-V EX 2WD. How much below invoice should we expect? Thanks in advance!
Your deal should be close to if not 2k below your models invoice price. This price should include all incentives and rebates, excluding taxes, tags and dealers doc fee charge.
@stever recommended I run this by @brian 125...From Buffalo NY and looking at CRV-LX AWD between now and end of month. Invoice with Dest charge is coming up as $23,718. As we approach Labor Day, I'm guessing $21,718 plus tax title and doc fees is the goal or would it be possible to do even better?
What would be a good lowball number to start with when I email dealers. We are going to a 100 mile radius of 14212 and there are 75 in stock.
We plan on walking into dealership with preapproved loan from credit union but will be open to a better rate if they want to look for us.
We were getting mixed info as far as incentives go in this area during test drives at 2 separate dealers but salesmen were obviously new. So, I'm not what incentives are.
Is there a chance they will change between now and labor day? Do we stand to get a better deal is we wait another month?
And wife threw a monkey wrench into plan when she said she actually likes the Civic LX just as much or even more since its cheaper. So I'll be posting similar question in about Civic in appropriate forum soon.
Thanks in advance!
Requirements and Restrictions:
•Dealer Cash is available towards retail purchase. Dealer Cash cannot be combined with APR or Lease offers financed through Honda Financial Services. Can be combined with available College Graduate or Military Appreciation offers.
Requirements and Restrictions:
•Vehicle must be financed through Honda Financial Services. 0.9% to 1.9% APR is only for residents of: AZ, Southern California, CT, DE, FL, IL, IN, IA, ME, MA, MI, MN, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NY, ND, OH, PA, RI, SD, VT, WI.
In Your area and surrounding counties.... Buffalo , Rochester, Syracuse , Cortland, Albany better pricing on either the CRV and Civic are much harder to get like we see in other states. Limited dealerships hurt you .. Play your cards right with the right poker face and hand and you may be able to pull off a 2k below dealers invoice on either model. If you go for a real low ball meet my price... dealers may just avoid you. Wait till the last 2 days in August before you start your buying process. Then on that day send out your emails and make your calls to the internet managers for the immediate sale that moment.
Shoot out a simple email to all dealerships in your 100 mile search. Put in your email the exact CRV model, color and option if any. You may need a secondary color due to the supply factor. Specify in this email or calls to all internet managers or there team that you will buy your choice model for 2300 below dealers invoice and hold with a credit card deposit that moment . Negotiate via email and phone till you hit a acceptable target price. Agreeing on a price closer to 2k below is a very good deal in your area .
Folks up in your area are seeing pricing ranging from 1300 to almost 1800 below dealers invoice as of last month. with the higher numbers coming out of Albany. You will get a better deal on a Civic. Just not a good vehicle in the snow belt and in snow.
Here are my dealer recommendations for your best deal on either vehicle. If you want to travel.
Lia, Mohawk, and Keeler all in Albany area. Pit these 3 dealers against each other in the price wars.
Fox Honda which is closer to you is harder to negotiate getting pricing you want. Its Worth a try with over 30 Civic vehicles in stock if you go that route.
@brian125 So with $500 dealer cash, since I'd come in with my own financing, will that just make the 2k below invoice target easier to get or is $2500 below a new target to shoot for? Refering to the crv my post this morning.
The 500 cash makes it easier to get closer to the 2k mark. Dealer is then only taken 1500 out of his net cost to sell...... and 500 pd from his company
A 2500 below is a hard number to get by you. . I'm not saying don't try. I'm just trying to prepare you for battle and what you should expect to settle on price wise. Knowing your area's pricing is a big key . Only dealers that need those end of the month sales numbers and incentives will go lower on that day. Or out of the general price range area they were selling .. These are the dealers you prey on.. This is my world of buying...................... I preach it like the 2nd coming .
I always low ball my dealers pitting one dealer against the next.
Good luck up in Buffalo.. Be patient you will make your best deal at months end..
It sounds like your first big battle is just getting your wife to decide on the CR-V or Civic (or back to the Rogue, lol). Since it sounds like you have time to shop, you can ease back and have some fun with your shopping. Buying cars should be an enjoyable process. Saving a few bucks is fun too.
(I think it goes without saying that @brian125 has the most fun around here).
Hi. Live on Long Island, NY. Was in the market for a 2014 CR-V EX AWD (wanted FW, but was told by several dealers they do not stock FW in my area). Got a quote from one dealer of $24,500. Did not look at the invoice or what fees and extras that included, it was just a ball-park price.
Called another dealer, who is related to a family member of mine, He told me 2014 stock in our area is limited, that the $500 cash back incentive for purchase is not that great, that the price I was given probably didn't include any fees. Said he could get me a final price (all fees, taxes, etc. included for $24,800). However, he recommended that if I could hold out, I should wait for the 2015.
I have not been able to find an official release date, or any pricing info. Just rumors/speculation on a slight overhaul in the 2015 model. What should I do? Thanks.
last I heard on the 2015 CRV models hitting dealers lots were on or about Honda's last sales quarter. Figure Sept / Oct with few changes / upgrades to vehicle. A better deal will be had on the 14 model.
Check out Atlantic and Huntington Honda in LI. along with the other 11 Honda dealers out by you on the Island. You will do better than 1k below invoice at this time.
The 1st month or so while the start of 2015 models are rolling into dealers lots pricing wont be good due to the supply factor.
Thank you brian125 for your response. If I were to wait until early next year on the 2015 would pricing be better? Huntington Honda is where I did my test drive and got that ball park figure, but I don't know what that number included.
Also, do you know if Honda added a blind-spot indicator to the 2015 model? That's a feature I really liked on the Mazda CX-5 and I've read it might be a new feature on the new CR-V. Thanks again.
Yes as the months go by and more of the 2015 crv's arrive on dealers lots pricing will get better.
End of the year/ end of the 4th quarter for car companies results in very very good pricing. I know many buyers who will only buy at the end of Dec. making better than previous month deals for the next year models. If time is on your side email dealers at the end of each month prior to Dec, and see if you could get your target price on a 2015.
Just bought an Accord EX CVT at Rensselaer Honda in Troy, NY. Breakdown as follow:
Purchase price including destination 22350 Loyalty cash 500 Doc fee 75 0.9% financing with American Honda Fiaance
Net = 22350 - 500 + 75 = 21925 + TTL
Happy to do business with Rensselaer Honda. Second vehicle purchased from this dealership within six years. Internet salesperson Mike is very easy to work with. Straightforward and helpful.
I am from Vermont and the dealers in Vermont and Northern NY are not competitive in pricing. I sent out about 8 emails to dealers in NY state on 7/28 to get quote. Mohawk Honda from Scotia (near Albany) NY had the best quote -- at 22060 before loyalty cash. I called them on 7/31 to close the deal and agreed to a sales price of 21960 including destination and before the 500 loyalty cash. I put down a deposit using my credit card and had them emailed me the bill of sales. That was 11am. They told me they would email me the bill of sales in 2 hours. Around 2pm, I called them again and they said they were very busy and would email me the bill of sales soon. Then I was tied up with work and did not call them again. Around 7:30pm, they called me that they made a mistake stating the 21960 sales price is for Manual transmission and they wanted 700 more for Automatic. Of course I was furious as the quote I received from them originally was for Automatic. I told them the deal was off. Because it was so late in the day I did not have time to call other dealers trying to buy on the last day of July. So I ended up buying from Rensselaer Honda instead on 8/11 as I need the car and can't wait until the end of August.
Lessons learned for me is if the dealer can't email me the bill of sales within 60 to 90 minutes after I put down a deposit with a credit card, then should cancel the deal and move on to the next dealer.
Stay away from Mohawk Honda for those of you who are going thru Internet sales in the Albany NY area.
Thanks to everyone in the forum and especially brian125 for all the valuable information.
Excellent post!!!!! it will help our upstate members and confirm what I talk about with pricing. When I buy any vehicle if dealerships can not fax over to me the bill of sale you will never see me in there showroom unless dealer is a quick drive away from my home. 1 hour is more than enough time to send the buyers order via fax . Unless dealer is telling you they are very busy in the back office.
Mohawk has done right by many members who I sent to them. @vtwonder, I will take note of what you said and put them on the watch list ....................... Thanks for sharing

Not sure. check Honda's web site in a few weeks. The blind spot indicator is a must feature in new vehicles. Honda would be foolish not adding it on there 2015 model
I have read that the new 2015 CR-V will have the direct injection 4 cylinder from the Accord, so gain a few horsepower. And have the CVT transmission, which will be a big change.

Not sure about these features for 2015. It's not gonna be an all-new model year anyway. But it will be nice to have the Push Start feature like the current model of CR-V in Asian markets.
Powertrain: We have always been happy with the smoothness and potency of the CR-V’s revvy, 185-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, but Honda will almost certainly update this offering with the direct-injected 2.4-liter four, which makes 189 horsepower in the U.S.-market Accord sedan. Honda will likely take the mid-cycle update as an opportunity to replace the current dated five-speed automatic with a CVT, also from the 2.4-liter-equipped U.S.-market Accord sedan.

Awesome discussion and information - thank you everyone! Going to buy a new 2014 CRV EX-L with navigation, AWD, side moldings, door edge guards, splash guards, and all-season mats. Sent quote requests out to 11 dealers today stating that I'm going to buy this month and I want their best price the first. Some dealers in SE Pennsylvania and some in Maryland. The best sale prices I'm getting are in the neighborhood of $29,400 which I believe is the Dealer Invoice amount. Right?
I am in MA and my best quote is $27.5K (the highest is $28.2K) for EX-L AWD with Nav (price includes dest. charge). I don't have the numbers (or price quote) for these accessories. Also, I try to make a deal by the end of this month.
I am interested in purchasing a new 2014 Honda CRV LX. This week I contacted a few dealers in the area to get prices. Last evening I had one text me a price of $22,500 as an out the door price. I made the mistake of not getting this in email with the itemized list.
When I told the other dealers about the price today and asked if they could match it, most of them said they could match and some said they could beat it by $500 but they wanted to see this offer in writing. I sent an email to this salesman and didn't hear back from him. I sent him a text later and he said he would send it. Then he said he had problems with my email address and wanted me to call. I sent him a different email address to use, knowing I would not hear back from him. I haven't. (Maybe the other salespeople knew this when they offered to price-match or beat it.)
So I'm back to the other dealers without this offer in hand. But since they were willing to match/ and/or reduce their price by another $500, it seems like I could get the car for $22,000 OTD?
It's one week until the end of the month and the quota pressure mounts. But it is also one month until the end of the third quarter with even more quota pressure.
Do you think it is possible I could get it for $22,000 OTD by the end of the week? If not, I guess I would be gambling to see how much 2014 inventory is left by the end of the September...do you think I would get a better deal then?
I am in Florida.
Thanks very much to Brian and everyone else for the great info on this site.
I went back and read comments posted at the end of June and realize now I don't have all the information necessary to know if $22,500 or $22,000 is a good price. It's not just the OTD as you need the itemized list. I will post when I get closer to a deal.
I also wanted to mention the great note on page 28 of this forum posted on June 29. Brian wrote a nice post of the email to send out to the dealerships to negotiate for a good deal.

I have dealers on the phone telling me they can match the $22,500 price I got in a text message from the one guy. But of course, none will send that to me via email. They want me on the lot to talk about it. Think I might wait until next weekend to buy. Do you think it would be possible to get $22,000 or $22,500 out the door?

Is the model you are looking for Awd or Fwd model. I will look into your numbers, and deal once you post exact model. I'm going to assume its the fwd model for Florida. Do you want any of these accessories added onto your car. vehicles that are loaded with all these accessories are a cash cow for dealers. These items we want to try to get as close to the dealers invoice price as possible. or we walk.
This is your hard earned money. spend it the way you want and not the dealers way.
It is a Fwd model. I do want the shade/back cover thing for behind the back seats to hide your stuff and I want the rubber mat for the back as well. I am a kayaker and I am very frustrated Honda does not make roof racks standard on the CRV. So while it would be nice to get the side rails, I don't think it will be in my budget. I am planning to buy the cross bars and the side rails off the Web. Since I won't be able to afford them with the car, I'm planning to ask for free labor on the install of the cross bars and side rails.
Also, I bought the Consumer Reports pricing service report on the 2014 Honda CRV LX. It has the MSRP at $23,120 and the base dealer invoice at $22,698 (that includes destination fees and included fees.)
Thanks for your help. I"m planning to email dealers on Thursday night in preparation for a purchase next weekend, end of the month.
Your target price to buy in FL. should range from 1500 to 2000 below dealers invoice price. if you could get a higher price than 2k you have done very well.
Your States doc fee's are high at 699, to get a price of 2k below dealers invoice price you need a asking price of 2699 off the invoice price of your model. The LX fwd model with destination charge include is.......................... 22,548
any accessories added to your vehicle you want at dealers invoice or close to that number.
@cheap Honda parts or @collegehills Honda . Use these prices as your guide to getting the dealers to match accessorie prices.

Invoice on your model w dest/ charge is 29,568. MD dealers will sell you this vehicle close to 2k below dealers invoice price.
MD dealers to email : Pohanka, O'Donnell, Jim Coleman, Brown's, Shockley, and sometimes Sport Honda will surprise us with pricing. Us these MD dealers to get better pricing in your area or travel to one for the sale.
I am not having a very successful time trying to purchase an go in and EX L AWD CR V. I speak to the salesperson, tell them my $26,664.00 price, I ask for their best price and they tell me that we are far apart. The dealer gives me a price around $27,615.00 - like today in White Plains Honda. I say thank you for your time and they let me walk out, no budging anymore on there price. I also stop receiving calls from the dealership to try and get me to come in. Maybe they are not taking me seriously enough or I need to change my tactics.
I did notice that on TrueCar.com that the price they suggest for the CR V EX L AWD has gone up since last month.

Subtotal: $32,962

Total MSRP: $33,792
Looking at this, an OTD price of about $29.5 seems to be a good deal. Please comment on what I should be aiming for. Based on your suggestions, I will get in touch with the dealer and try to get a sale price as well as an OTD price before negotiations.

Hello,
I'm in the Minneapolis, Mn area. Looking for a CRV-LX AWD.
Was offered- $22,499-sale price
$423.75- fee
$1,482.82- taxes
total- $24,405 OTD
Is this a good price or should I keep on looking?
@stever recommended I run this by @brian 125...From Buffalo NY and looking at CRV-LX AWD between now and end of month. Invoice with Dest charge is coming up as $23,718. As we approach Labor Day, I'm guessing $21,718 plus tax title and doc fees is the goal or would it be possible to do even better?

Thanks in advance!

The 500 cash makes it easier to get closer to the 2k mark. Dealer is then only taken 1500 out of his net cost to sell...... and 500 pd from his company
23 Telluride SX-P X-Line, 23 Camry XSE
A 2500 below is a hard number to get by you. . I'm not saying don't try. I'm just trying to prepare you for battle and what you should expect to settle on price wise. Knowing your area's pricing is a big key . Only dealers that need those end of the month sales numbers and incentives will go lower on that day. Or out of the general price range area they were selling .. These are the dealers you prey on.. This is my world of buying...................... I preach it like the 2nd coming .
I always low ball my dealers pitting one dealer against the next.
Good luck up in Buffalo.. Be patient you will make your best deal at months end..

Oh jeeze, anything over $50 is too much in my book. Dealers like to pad those fees for additional profit.
But it looks like you're in luck - NY apparently limits doc fees to $75.
What New Car Fees Should You Pay?
It sounds like your first big battle is just getting your wife to decide on the CR-V or Civic (or back to the Rogue, lol).
Since it sounds like you have time to shop, you can ease back and have some fun with your shopping. Buying cars should be an enjoyable process. Saving a few bucks is fun too.
(I think it goes without saying that @brian125 has the most fun around here).
Thanks @brian125. Exactly what I needed to know.
Thanks.
pkmom
last I heard on the 2015 CRV models hitting dealers lots were on or about Honda's last sales quarter.

Thank you for your advice! Greatly appreciated. Will hope for a good end-of-year deal on the 2015.

Just bought an Accord EX CVT at Rensselaer Honda in Troy, NY. Breakdown as follow:
Purchase price including destination 22350 Loyalty cash 500 Doc fee 75 0.9% financing with American Honda Fiaance
Net = 22350 - 500 + 75 = 21925 + TTL

Thanks for sharing
enjoy your new Accord

Brian - can you tell me what my price targets should be for my area (MASSACHUSETTS) when I start emailing next week?
CRV; $ 1500- $ 2300
15 Forester; 500 below dealers invoice to invoice should be your target price. You may find not many dealers going below invoice price.

Not sure. check Honda's web site in a few weeks. The blind spot indicator is a must feature in new vehicles. Honda would be foolish not adding it on there 2015 model
23 Telluride SX-P X-Line, 23 Camry XSE
I have read that the new 2015 CR-V will have the direct injection 4 cylinder from the Accord, so gain a few horsepower. And have the CVT transmission, which will be a big change.
Not sure about these features for 2015. It's not gonna be an all-new model year anyway. But it will be nice to have the Push Start feature like the current model of CR-V in Asian markets.

It looks Edmunds and KKB don't show invoice prices for factory packages, options and accessories anymore.
They never did. Honda is one of the few that we have no listing on accessories.

A reporter would like to speak to a new car buyer who made their purchase through a longer term loan, 72 months or more. If you'd like to share your story, please send your contact info to pr@edmunds.com no later than Sunday, 8/24/14 at 10 a.m. PT.
Right?
No one seems to want to give a deal yet.

Thanks.
23 Telluride SX-P X-Line, 23 Camry XSE

23 Telluride SX-P X-Line, 23 Camry XSE
