Those of you with Speedvision may want to tune in tonight at 6pm or 10pm Pacific for the World Rally Championship mid-season review, and at 9pm for Subaru's Road to Rally programmes.

Unfortunately, the new WRXs didn't stand up well to this year's very tough WRC Kenya rally. Richard Burns broke a left front suspension strut, and the wheel fell off. Petter Solberg lost a rear wheel, forcing him to slow down dramatically. Tommi Makkinen ended up winning by a 12 minute margin.

Yep the Troop is from Japan. Not sure of the supplier of the guage, but it rocks! first bar = 15% power to that axle, 2 bars = 15-35%, full 3 bars = 35-50%

Last night after reading all the posts about this subject, I drove to a pub close to SOA headquarters, and found a Subaru engineer relaxing after work. I subtly bought him 14 pints of Guinness, and then he told me the truth about the famous 60/20 split. Subaru really wanted the WRX program to succeed, so it fashioned some new technology to make it succeed. When the owner of a WRX stomps down on the accelerator, the WRX sends out a help request over a hyper-wave accelaron link. It senses the nearest Outback, alerts its engine computer, and the Outback then changes it's power grid to 60/20 with the other 20% going to the WRX. The WRX gets it's power boost (everyone assumes it's the "turbo" kicking in), and everyone is happy. Since this is a totally experimental technology, Patti and SOA are not allowed to talk about it yet. Patti, when she made a slip was easily able to explain it away as a mere slip of the keyboard. I know my faith in Patti is now totally restored!

Wait a second, Peter lost a rear wheel, and only SLOWED DOWN? You mean he kept going on three wheels?

Man, I need Speedvision big time!

Thanks, Frank, our faith is restored.

Missed the WRC review. Hopefully I'll catch it on a repeat. Time to check speedvision's schedule (sorry to rub it in juice). The more problems that Burns has, reminds me of a certain Scot that was recently having major car problems with a certain four letter word manufacturer. Hopefully Burns' luck, as well as the cars, will improve as did McRae's.

Thanks for clearing up the torque split mystery Frank. Now it makes sense. :-)

Patti - Hope this works. "There's no car like a Sube. There's no ..."

Last night they repeated the Subaru "Road to a Rally," followed by a great interview with the dean of automotive journalism, David E. Davis of Automobile magazine.

It was was a great evening!

It's good to see the H6 prices going in the right direction. Besides the $40 increase in freight, prices stayed flat, so factoring the added content makes the 2002 models a better value. Plus, the H6 sedan brings the entry price for the H6 down a couple of grand.

Same with the 2002 Forester. It is priced nearly the same as the original 1998 model ($340 more, not even keeping pace with inflation), despite too much added content to even list here.

    Please keep this up!

Suggestions for next year? How 'bout that 5 speed auto across the board? Manual controls for it, too. Put that lit key hole in every Subie. Toss in rear disc brakes. The window antennae is a good idea that should spread to other models.

I like those small improvements (some not so small), especially when the price does not go up with the added content.

Any other suggestions for 2003? Small or big, I mean.

The "new" 2001 Passat GLX 4motion wagon went up $565, but I think the warranty is for 2002, right? Prices aren't out yet.

It would be interesting to see. If prices jump up, you're better off having the option to buy an extended warranty a-la-carte.

My guess is that if anything you'll see more manumatics on the cars that only come in ATs right now. The MTs will be left for only the performance models. Just a guess.

FWIW I'm headed to Boston, MA tomorrow through Saturday for a few days off. If anyone wants to get together to talk shop, email me at the address in my profile. Better yet, anyone want to pick me up in Providence, RI for quick jaunt to Hingham? Preferably in a WRX but any Scooby, old or new will do. ;) ("new will do" is a simple assonance)

I was watching the local (Baltimore) news on TV tonight, when they did a story on a new crisis management team that Baltimore County was putting into effect. In the background of the TV shot were images of their automotive fleet, two of which (perhaps more??) were brand new white Subaru Forester Ls.

Finally, at least one part of our local government is seeing the light. I guess they felt in "crisis" situations, they needed vehicles they could count on, no matter what.

Hmmm... Sounds like a potential story for DRIVE magazine? Patti, are you listening?

    Bob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
You are funny, you actually buy into that? You've been around the US long enough to know that the government only buys from the lowest bidder! :) Every car they buy, ever road you drive on, all to the lowest bidder! :) It's economics my friend.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Who knows why, but I'll bet they were the lowest price. The dealer may have had them damaged in shipping, and re-done, they could have just wanted to unload them, could have gotten a payoff under the table, subaru could have given them money toward it to help promote them, any 1 of a # of reasons that they didn't choose it for it's utility. I just don't like to toot our own horns too much, unless there are cold facts to back it up. :)

Whoever's calling the shots in Baltimore County made a good choice. This is one government decision I'm not going to complain about.

  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
    payoff under the table

When in doubt, throw in a conspiracy theory. ;)

mike, the RFP might have required AWD, fuel economy, and maximum dimensions that perhaps only the Forester could meet. I've responded to enough guv'ment RFPs to know it's possible to write one so the buyer actually gets what's needed, not just the least expensive.

But I admit, conspiracy theories sell more copy. :D

I've long thought that Subarus would make excellent government vehicles, and have posted thusly to that effect in the past.

I know Subarus are used a police cars in a number of overseas markets. When Subaru first started building cars in Indiana, I remember reading about several Police versions being used in that state. Here where I live in rural Howard County, I see a few right-hand drive Subaru postal vehicles.

So, perhaps the "initial purchase" bottom line is less important than the projected "lifetime cost of ownership" (running expenses, maintenance costs, repair expenses, etc.) bottom line. That could also have figured into the Baltimore County purchase.

I'll pass it on to our Drive Magazine editors.
    Thanks for the heads up!

When we get a nasty snow storm here, the local Fox affiliate and a major traffic reporting company can be spotted in their Subaru's during news reports. I always enjoy seeing that.

Sorry - I just wanted to share this with my friends out there. There is a web site called NCMEC.ORG It is for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. If you get on their e-mail list for your area of the country, they send you posters of kids missing that may be in your area. You get the information quickly which can be really beneficial in trying to find a missing child. I print them out and carry them in my car.

Since this is such a dedicated group of roadsters I wanted to share this with you. If we could help 1 child get home.....

Sorry for going off topic, but I want to let as many people know about this as I can.

    Thanks.

I'm sure folks here will do their part.

    Bob
  • hammersleyhammersley Member Posts: 684
Patti: Thanks for the reminder. We firefighter types get a chance to see more of those kids than the average bear, simply because it's part of the job description. We are unofficially referred to as "gatekeepers", due to the fact that we're able to open so many doors for people needing social services that they've not yet availed themselves of. The elderly get a lot of the attention, simply because there are more of them whose needs are more obvious. Kids are our future - we at least owe them a fighting chance.

Soapbox mode "off", and apologies for the OT post. I could make it on topic... I drive to work in my Subaru. There!
    Cheers!

assonance?...wait, did he just insult me? ;-)

paisan: I bet you're right on the money regarding future trannies.

Bob: I guess the city is getting more attention after that HAZMAT train derailment, eh?

Mike is right. If the RFP called for at least 20mpg EPA city, AWD, ABS, power package and A/C, Forester is the lowest bid at $19750 invoice. A RAV4 would cost $19937 and a CR-V, $20132.

Nothing else meets the 20mpg requirement, so I can see Subaru winning a contract like that fair-and-square.

No need to apologize for going off topic when it comes to volunteer work or helping an organization like NCMEC. In fact, as your Crew Chief I'd like to encourage it all the way.

They just had an article in this past Sunday's paper about the 20th anniversary of 6 year old Adam Walsh's disappearance..his body was found later...It was a big case back then and is still unsolved...his father, John Walsh, is the founder and host of the TV show "Unsolved Mysteries" (or some show like that). It still is a hot button down here in South Florida.
  • hammersleyhammersley Member Posts: 684
    It's "America's Most Wanted"
    "Unsolved Mysteries" is Robert Stack.

I knew it was one of those...still a sad case. The first thing they found of Adam was his head
  • pattim3pattim3 Member Posts: 533
When Adam Walsh was kidnapped, it shook me up a bit because my son was just a few years younger and his name is Adam. It has made this a cause for me for awhile.

    Thank you all.

    Hi gang,

I will be going to Vancouver Island, specifically Victoria, this morning (just for a day) so I won't be able to host the Subaru chat due to the uncertainty of the ferry ride. My esteemed colleague Kirstie, aka moderator_kh, has kindly agreed to host this week's Subaru Thursday chat, so be nice :-). She drives an Infiniti I30, BTW.

Ok, I give, I cannot find the Subaru dealer in London, UK mentioned earlier. Perhaps I need to resort to the A-Z.

    Can someone provide detailed directions?

I'm off to get some brochures for Serge...

  • lakepoplakepop Member Posts: 221
amishra...don't know if you are looking for a specific dealer but start with www.subaru.co.uk.

Hope this helps.....but know that I could not find an e-mail address for any of the uk dealers. Long distance phones calls were not what I wanted to do....
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Don't worry, we won't give Kirstie a hard time.

Man, I'm getting close to 40k miles on Sandy. It feels like I just got her the other day! It'll actually be three years on 8/8.

What should I get for her birthday? A nice wash and wax? A tire rotation and waxed rims? New wiper blades (they're fairly new)? A and B but not C? ;-)

    Ace Kensington
    18-23 Radley Mews

    0171 937 5691 fax

David Taylor is the sales director - he may let you kick tires. (In hindsight I dread to think what I may have done to a P1 in London traffic and never having driven on the left side of the road.) Parts are handled by a separate Ace facility on the outskirts of London.

Don't the monitors themselves have to let some air out to check the pressure? That may actually cause low air pressure instead of preventing it.

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
but it could be a good safety feature, if they do indeed work.
