That code doesn't imply it, you're right, but some codes definitely do imply a specific part, and this misleads some people. You know better, I know better, but there are a helluva lot of people replacing 02 sensors for no good reason.

"Regarding dealer recommended maint., this misleading
customers on what is required has been happening for years.

    K Cochran "
Why? Is that a Hyundai thing? I have never experienced this before (Volvo, Honda, VW).

If you've never had a dealership recommend a "maintenance package" at regular service intervals which goes beyond manufacturers requirements you must be one in a million.

Does anyone know if there is some way to adjust the track on a 09 Sonata driver's seat to allow it to go back further than the stock set up?

My 2001 Sonata GLS didn't pass the emission test. The test result says that O2 sensor and Catalyst are "Not Ready."
I took it to a dealershop, and they replaced the parts and fixed it. They cleared the codes but still they are not ready.
The mechanics at a dealershop keep saying that they've fixed all the problems and that there is nothing I can do but running... So I ran. I ran more than 600 miles and went back to the dealershop every morning in vain.

Recently, I found the "drive cycle" and one man from California did drive exactly as was instructed by the drive cycle manual.
I believe that it'll be somewhat dangerous to drive that way. So, I'm thinking about "driving" my car with the front wheels lifted up. Then I can "run" without moving my car. Will this idea work? Is there any other thing that I should take into consider?

Can the dealership do the emission test?
  • kjleekjlee Member Posts: 2
    Yes, my dealer can...
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
If the dealer says they have fixed all the problems, have them smog it. If it doesn't pass tell them they obviously haven't fixed it.

I don't see how driving your car for a considerable distance after a repair is going to change the smog readings much, but maybe I'm missing something.

    Guys???

Just got a used 2008 Sonata. Love the car but XM radio always displays 'Loading'. Is there a reset procedure or is this something the dealer has to fix? Has anyone encountered this before? If so, what was the solution?

Thanks in advance for any help.
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
XM is a paid service. Have you paid to get the service?
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
Is there a cd in the player? Does the CD work. You will still get a channel or two on XM where they advertise there service.
  • hperduehperdue Member Posts: 3
cd, am, and fm all work. I should be able to display xm channel 0 to get the radio ID in order to subscribe to xm service, but the only response I get is the Loading message. No other controls have any effect. I did run across a TSB concerning set top boxes that were damaged by water leaks in the trunk. I'll have the dealer check it out (still under warrantee) and will post the results. thanks for the feedback.

I have an 08 Sonata with 8800 miles that has started making a ticking sound only when accelerating. The noise tends to stop after driving for a while. Any ideas what could be causing this? I haven't gone back to the dealer yet. The dealer recently replaced the "short block" with a rebuilt engine from Hyundai after the oil pump failed.

I just bought a 2000 Sonota, the tranny doesn't shift right from 1st to 2nd. The person I bought it from recommends flushing the tranny and putting in the new filter he gave me with the car. I need info on "how to" flush a tranny.

I know the automatic transmission is covered under the 10 year warranty. My son is thinking of buying a manual transmission GLS.I bet the clutch would be considered maintenance and not warranty. anyone know? How long does it normally last? In the Audi's they normally go over 100k.
  • hperduehperdue Member Posts: 3
Dealer replaced the set top box in the trunk and the xm now works normally. :)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If the clutch "breaks" because of a defect, it's covered under the powertrain warranty. If it just wears out (e.g. clutch pressure plate) or fails due to misuse, it's not covered. This comes from some personal experience with a clutch failure on an Elantra.

My auto-light snsor goes on too late in my opinion. I have covered the red flashing security LED figuring that is the only place on the sensor that is not opaque. Aiming flashlight at the sensor does turn the lights on and off so I am in the correct area. In the actual sensor not where the red LED is?
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
Check the same position, other side of the car, that's where it is on the 2008.
  • craigbrookscraigbrooks Member Posts: 420
The red flashing LED is not the correct dash "button". You should have one on the passenger side. Try covering that one with masking tape and see what happens. It should work. You might want to add a piece of window tint or, I just thought of this, a light film of clear or so nail polish to help darken the sensor. Just a thought. Let us know how the nail polish works. :P Enquiring minds want to know. ;)
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
My car only has one in the center of the dash. May be 2009's are different then previous years. The on line manual show it is the same one for both security and lighting.
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
If the manual says the sensor is there, why not put a layer of tape over it and see how it works.

Folks in the far east apparently believe that turning the lights on when it is still light outside is impolite. At least, that's what a driver in Shanghai told us. Go figure.
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
I taped the sides of the sensor mostly and got the results I wanted. Maybe to much just fine tuning now

I have a 2004 Sonata manual transmission. The clutch is not covered and it is bad. I had to replace my first one at 45,000 miles. Hyundai paid for the flywheel, $1,500. I paid $1,200. They have a 'dual-mass' flywheel that cannot be turned, it must be replaced. That clutch went out at 87,000 miles and I was stuck with the whole $3,000 repair bill. I will not have that car for another 30,000 mile.

You have a lot of dedication! I have a 2000 2.4 manual Sonata and my [second] clutch lasted over 50,000 mi. of use. (I vaguely recall they replaced the first clutch along with a squeaky bushing due to a TSB back around 25-30k mi). I replaced the clutch mainly because at the time they were replacing my engine block and I figured that was the ideal time to do it with the engine torn apart. I now regret it -- the clutch lasted maybe 3,000 and failed along with several bearings and the flywheel. Then they installed another clutch, that again, started slipping soon after. Thank heavens this was under the powertrain warranty or I would not have been able to afford it all. Oh boy. Then they put in this last clutch and it seems to be holding after about 2,000 mi. However, the dealer said they 'removed the check valve' from the clutch slave cylinder (maybe the master cylinder, I dont remember) at the direction of the Hyundai rep who came to investigate. This really bothers me because they couldn't explain why they had to take apart and disable the check valve the car was designed with, in order to keep from burning up clutches. There are no TSBs on this issue. But still the service manager had no good explanation than saying Hyundai told him to do it. I asked to talk to the Hyundai guy but I never heard from anyone about the issue. Does anyone know what this check valve issue is all about? It makes me seriously worry about Hyundai, and I'm very worried this clutch is equally not long for this world.

Oh and today I found out my engine crank pully has deteriorated and pulled the alternator drive belt into the timing belt cover, ruining all three. Fun, fun! And 700 miles left on the warranty.... Thank Gd!

My '01 Sonata is stumping my mechanic. Each time you shut the car off, the clock defaults to 1:00, the radio pre-sets are lost and have to be reset. Additionally, the auto locks have stopped working recently. My mechanic believes it is all tied together, has hooked it up to his computer and can't find a bad wire or what might be causing this electrical mystery. He's taken the door taken apart and put back together again to no avail. Help!!!
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
Did he take the clock out (Or remove the connector) to see if the voltage supplied to the clock with the power off? There needs to be a voltage on the clock to keep time and another wire appys power so you can see the clock when the key is turned on.

Well, I have a 2008 Sonata with 17K miles. I went to Monro for an oil change because my dealer is 45 minutes away so sometimes I cheat and go locally. They calle dme and told me that I need rear brakes. I let them do it. Now, 3 days later, I hear a thump thump thump sound. I take off rear tire (which was tight as crap because they air-gunned the hell out of it) and spun the rotor by holding the lugs. it catches/drags at a certain point and I believe that they over did the p-brake adjustment. How do you adjust it once you take the plug out?
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Go back to Monro and complain. A lot of these types of chains employ poorly trained people.

I have 2007 sonata GLS, last week just did 30000 miles maintenance service, after that, each time when I start the car, I can hear the water sound from drive side dash. Not always each time, but if the engine is cold, like each morning go to work and afternoon when back home, always can hear plain water sound. I drove to dealer, because drove a lot way, so they cannot hear anything, but for me, I can hear each time. It's very annoyed. Did anyone have any idea about this? Thanks.

what was included in the 30,000 mile service? Was the coolant changed? My first guess would be check if there is air in the cooling system.

    I have hyundai sonata 2003,manual.
I have a question,When i shift to first gear i have some difficulty like it is some what hard and i dont have any problem with other, gears are smooth.
When the engine is in off condition all the gears are smooth including first gear.
is anything wrong with the my way of shifting ? or there is a problem with transmission?
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
Could be the clutch not disengaging fully. When you release the clutch with the engine on when does the clutch start to engage?
  • balakbalak Member Posts: 2
immediately it starts to engage..i have this problem only with the 1st gear no problem with any one of them.Like if I shift to 2nd gear initially and shift to first gear,it does not have any problem.
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
The clutch should not begin to engage if you have only released the peddle a couple of inches. I do not know why second gear is fine and I would expect reverse to be the worst.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I think you have a clutch problem. You might investigate to see if this clutch is in any way adjustable.

I have a 1999 Sonata and all of the power windows stopped working. I checked the fuse and it is still good, could that be the switches?
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
Sounds like the wire as it goes into the door may be your problem. Does you car have the switch that prevents all the windows from operating other than the driver's window?. See if power is getting to the switches in the driver's door.

    Hi,

I just called a hyundai dealership in NY. They told me they would charge 595$ for the 30k maintenance on my Sonata SE V6 2007. Is this excessive?

If anyone in the NY area has better prices, please let me know...
  • oskidunker1oskidunker1 Member Posts: 213
Dealers are adding in a non required fuel injector cleaning. This adds about $200.00 to the cost of the service. Look in your manual and photo copy the required service. Tell them thats all you want.I have had Audi's for 20 years and NEVER had the fuel injectors cleaned. Also, it was not a part of the service.

I suspect since Hyundai service required is so minimal and cheap, many dealers are adding things that you might catorgize as :Nice to do".

Also beware of the cooling system flush many are including at 30k, even thought the manual says "first cooling flush 60k" Maybe that would be valuable, I don't know.

I wish the dealers and Hyundai would get on the same page. Frankly, I have not heard of adding things to the manufaturer required service until I got my azera.
  • owen127owen127 Member Posts: 3
Ask them for a list of what they will do...That is really too much...
  • felixbrienfelixbrien Member Posts: 7
I asked for the 30,000 miles checkup because there is a sound that happens on the front side of the car. It only appears when I am close to be fully stopped. So, at the end of the breaking cycle, just before the car immobilize.

The sound is quite strong, like toc toc toc toc...

Anyone has an idea of what it is?
  • owen127owen127 Member Posts: 3
    Check the oil...
  • felixbrienfelixbrien Member Posts: 7
I changed the oil 2 weeks ago.
I didn't see any liquid on the ground. Maybe I should have checked under the hood.

It's like the sound is coming from the front right tire... But all looks good there.

    Hi,
I am sure this question has been asked, but is the Hyundai warranty coverage contingent upon getting required routine services done by Hyundai dealer service department or can I have any mechanic of my choosing do the work and document it?

    Thanks! :confuse:
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
Anyone can do the maintenance. Just keep records and receipts. I believe there is a law that states this.
  • felixbrienfelixbrien Member Posts: 7
Also, just called the dealership, and they charge 100$ to diagnostic the problem.
Is it me or this is much too expansive?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I thought maybe it was due to a stone in the tread, but you said the tire looked fine, so must not be that.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
It's higher than I've seen before from Hyundai dealerships, but I've seen diagnosis fees in the $80-85 range (Midwest). Did they also tell you they will waive the fee if they find the problem is warranty-related, or will deduct it from the repair bill if you pay for the repair? That is common practice.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Also be sure OEM-spec parts and fluids are used. That is very important.
