I'm leaving in about an hour to go to the United States Grand prix Formula 1 race at Indianapolis. If anyone here is going to be there, I'll be in Stand G Section 82, Row S Seat 9, and the WRXWagon will be in the Subaru Corral. It's the black one with the trunk monkey and the clubWRX stickers (hey, they were free...) You've all seen it on here before.

Have to see if the new GF wants to do anything that day, if she is busy, then I'm game for a roadtrip to Baltimore, heck if you guys want to setup something (Juice, bob, etc) maybe hypov and I will take a run down even if Ken can't meet up!

Maybe a Saturday gathering would work. I am having PRK surgery tomorrow (cornea too thin for LASIK) and the recovery period varies a lot, so I may be fine or may not be able to drive to Baltimore so soon.

As far as suggesting a place - there is a Cheesecake Factory there I think, any B-more locals confirm that? The Inner Harbor has all kinds of places to go. ESPNZone is another, I think Phillips (but crabs are out since Ken is allergic). There's the Baltimore Aquarium, too.

I might take the family to the aquarium and then meet up w/you guys for dinner, something like that. That way my wife can drive and I could likely go either way.

Bob: as far as Porsche bringing new ideas, well, VW does that anyway. The thing that frigthens me is price creep. SUV prices were in the mid-teens in the 80s, 20-30k in the 90s, and are now 30k plus for mid-sizers. How many gadgets do we need?

Loosh: bummer to hear about the damage.

By the way, thanks for the day off! I *do* still work for the World Bank Group, actually the private division called the IFC. We got Friday off. It was so nice I thought about making some signs myself and trying to stretch the time off 'til today! :-)

But people gotta realize something - the Bank doesn't put McDonalds in these 3rd world countries, far from it. They are actually our competitors. So is Citibank. We are lending money to high-risk areas that cannot get good rates from private firms like Citibank, so they come to us.

IFC actually buys ownership in small companies from these countries, provides technical assistance and capital to allow them to compete with the McDonalds of the world. Once they are on their feet, we sell off our shares and go help someone else.

Any how, lots of the protestors are students that just want to make noise and get arrested, but they're hardly worthy of association with protestors from, say, the civil rights movement.

    Just one opinion.

Please no chains, ok? Even Philips is a chain. But I'd like to avoid Cheesecake and ESPN and all that if possible. There's lots of locally owned yummies to be had, especially if the point is to see and know my hometown a little. Depending on where we go and what we see, I am sure we can find something. We all drive subies, so let's not eat GM. :)

There's always Little Italy, and Fells Point. Loosh, you're probably more familiar with the local eateries, why don't you suggest something?

I can deliver some NY Pizza if anyone wants me to pick up a pie!

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Want to show Ken a little local character? 'K, sounds good to me.

I'd say Little Italy might be best, then. Haven't been there in a couple of years, though. I think we'd been to Vaccaro's, the place that has all-you-can-eat desserts.

You want to take on the task of picking a place out? I'd say a family-friendly place, but I'm not 100% sure I can even go, depending on my eyes. So pick a place and I'll try to make it.

I'm up for anything as long as it's not exclusively crustacean. ;-) Actually, I like Loosh's thinking. Let's check out something Baltimore.

    mike -- I'll take a plain slice and a meatball hero. ;-)

juice -- It'll be great to see you and the kids. I really hope you can make it.

I'm getting psyched for this trip!

    Anyone want anything from Cali?

it's a shame you and crabs don't get along. Bo Brooks and Gunnings are two of the best crab houses around in Baltimore.

    Oh well, maybe another time...

I think it was Sabatinos(?), in Little Italy, where I had the best Crab Imperial ever. Man I'm getting hungry, just thing about that meal...

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    OK, now I'm hungry.

Last time I was in Little Italy we went to Vaccaro's. They have the best desserts, even an all-you-can-eat deal one day of the week, I forget which.

Someone has to go over there and scope it out, pick a place that can seat a group.

    Bob,

Yeah, I'm bumming that my immune system no longer likes crabs. As you might know, the San Francisco area has some great crab as well. My favorite was the salt and pepper crab at the R&G Seafood Restaurant in Chinatown. I was fine all my life and then, POW -- I'm in the emergency room.

    Ken
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    I wonder which is worst.
Emergency room or itching all week.
I can't have large dosage of shellfish these days.
I'm not gambling with the ER route, but Bo Brooks isn't all crabs. I didn't have crabs when I was there last October. Forgot what I ate but it was yum yum.

    -Dave
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
I'll take itching all week over what I went through in the ER!

Hey, as long as they have something other than our spidery sea-friends for food, I'm game.

Mike- Should that be "not" to smack anything? 8~)

If it's a mild allergy, take Benedryl before eating. YMMV.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    Yeah NOT smack anything.

Here are pics of my Trooper that got smacked last saturday while my buddy Adam was driving it, not his fault at all.

I think if Juice is going to bring la familia and needs the full blown kids' menu and whatnot, you all may be better off at a place like the Zone or Phillips. In any case, here are some local yokel choices, kid friendly where indicated:

Wharf Rat, either by Camden Yards or in Fell's Point is a good bet. Hand-pulled ales in traditional English style, and tasty casual eats as well. The Camden Yards location can easily accomodate kids, as they get a regular pre-Orioles family crowd.

    206 West Pratt St.

    Baltimore, MD 21201

    (410) 244-8900

    801 South Ann St.

    Fells Point

    Baltimore, MD 21231 (410) 276-9034

DeGroen's Grill, formerly the Baltimore Brewing Company, on the outskirts of Little Italy, is the Tuetonic equivalent to the Rat. Focus on germanic beer styles and food, but also great burgers, grilled salmon sandwiches, etc.

    104 Albemarle Street

    Baltimore Maryland

    Phone: (410) 837-5000

    http://www.degroens.com

Blue Agave in Federal Hill is a delicious mexican restaurant. Prices are similar to what you would pay at an industrial place like Don Pablo's but the food is more honest. Queso con chorizo as an appy is to die for. Bar focuses on good tequila and fine margs. There is a $3 penalty charge for insisting on a frozen marg! :'))

    1032 Light Street

    Baltimore, MD 21230

Pizza you say? well then roll up your sleeves, but your elbows on the table, and dig into Matthew's of Eastern Avenue. A neighborhood joint with zero pretention and zero tablecloths, this place does deepdish pizza that'll send you home with a doggie bag fer sure. Not a greasy cheese laden affair, but smaller, personal, old-world pies. Some specials, or build one a la carte. Kids no prob.

    3131 Eastern Ave.

    Baltimore

    410-276-8755

Little Italy has been little more than a spaghetti slinging tourist trap for over a decade. But for decadent desserts Vaccaro's is still a destination:

    222 Albemarle St.

    (corner of Albemarle and Stiles)

    Baltimore

    410-685-4905

Bo brooks sucks eggs now that it has moved, but if you want crabs 'n beer plus a little something for those who can't, try L.P. Steamers in Locust Point. Kids absolutely o.k. A little bit out of the way but great local flavor. If Bud is working, tell him Lucien sent ya! (er, Lucius, as he insists on calling me....)

I'm playing Mick O'sheas that night, which also has a good menu and is completely kid friendly. Nice atmosphere and conveniently located just north of the harbor. Great fish and chips, big burgers.

Maybe meet around 2-3pm hang for an hour or 2 then eat at like 4/5->7 which would put us back in NYC @ 10pm ish.

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
How about you guys plan on an earlier meeting and I'll try to get there as soon as possible? Maybe I can catch the tail end of it so I can at least drop in to say hi to my fellow NYers and their respective rides.

If everyone else is up to it, then we could continue on to Mick O'Sheas.

with images of the Paris Subie display. One shot shows the new Impreza lined up with a couple of Legacys. The visual family lineage clearly shows here. Love the "Arrest Me Red" WRX shown too.

    Ken,
When do you anticipate arriving in Baltimore on 10/5? Perhaps someone from the crew could pick you up at the airport!

  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
Was just told that I may HAVE to work this Saturday :( Till like 2:00pm EST.

    -Dave
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I'd be happy to pick you and your buddy up at BWI. Just tell what time, airline and flight number. You can e-mail if you want. BWI is about 20 minutes from my house. I'll even wear my white Subie baseball cap!

Mike, I think(?) he's coming arriving at BWI in the early evening.

I too may be tied up earlier in the day. No problem after 4:00 or so. Before that, it's questionable.

    Bob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Well once we know when he's arriving, then we can plan what time to meet up. I may bail if Hypov does cause it's a far drive alone.

Glad to see the Crew step up to the plate to welcome our West Coast buddies!

OK, my eyes are healing wonderfully, in fact I could probably drive today, so I can make it for sure. Wife and family will be in tow, so that's four of us.

We can plan on dinner at Mick O'Sheas at about 7pm (when Bob and Ken arrive), but I can maybe meet earlier at the Inner Harbor with mike and Dave. Take some quick pics, hang out, maybe check out the Aquarium, then eat.

I'm basically spending the whole day there, so I may do the aquarium beforehand anyway. So I'm relatively flexible with the time.

OK, now let's get a head count. I have 4 with me. Then there's Bob, Ken, Ken's buddy, Mike, and Loosh. That's 9 for dinner, plus maybe paisan and Dave?

    Hutch can't go, bummer.

Anyone bringing a spouse or other friends? Did I miss anyone?

paisan: I feel your pain. Looks like 4 damaged panels, ouch, plus the flares.

Is the other person's insurance paying for it all? Or did they already, and there are two, um, bodies in your trunk? ;-)

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
They are sending someone out to look at it. They haven't said they aren't paying so we'll see how it pans out. I'm assuming that the other folks were up front with their insurance and said we pulled into em. Not to mention I have about 10 witnesses from about 4 angles if it comes down to it.

Also a bumper in the front, and possibly rear as well.

    -mike
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
juice -- Let me know where you guys end up hanging out before dinner on Saturday. If I have time, I'd like to say hi to the folks who won't be staying around for dinner (or are there any?).

mike -- Sounds like you're covered. Hang in there.

    Ken
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
assuming it's on time. By the time we gather his luggage and get into Baltimore, it will be around 5:00 or so, plus he needs to get to his hotel, and may want to relax a bit. So I'm guessing hooking up with everyone probably no sooner than 6:00. All subject to change...

I don't think Mike (Smith) is going to make it, because of family commitments. What about you Paisan, is that too late?

    Bob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
But I may crash in DE that night and head to Ed's drive on Sunday directly from DE. In which case it won't matter. So go ahead and make plans and if I can make it or Me and Hypov can make it we will.

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
So Mike and Hutch are out, paisan a maybe.

Confirmed are Bob, Ken, Ken's buddy, and the 4 in my car. Plus Loosh will already be there. That's a group of 8 confirmed so far.

    Anyone else?

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Should we meet at 7:00 PM? Is that a good time for everyone? Should it be earlier?
