6 speed auto. I think Jag uses one now, right? Who else does?

We're seeing more and more 5 and 6 speeds, time for Subaru to get with the program.

Most of the discussions have just disappeared. I have no idea where they are. Every time I try to get, it's a very *ify* proposition.

What's interesting is that GM and Ford doing it together. 6-speed autos are primarily reserved for premium brands at the moment: BMW 7-Series, VW Touareg, Porsche Cheyenne, and the new Jag.

What's the advantage of 6 speed autos? I seem to find my 4EAT to be plenty at most 5EAT, but 6? More complex, more shifting more wear? No?

Uhhhmm...I guess there was a problem last night.

    /direct/view/.ef0b764/888

But, I personally have not had any problems this morn. Please report these problems in "Ask the Hosts", as the techies do monitor that discussion.

are the gouging champs. Every Soob on the lot at russell subaru has a $400 "appearance package" charge on the sticker. On completely stock OEM cars. I told them off (loudly so other buyers could here) and walked. That was when I was shopping around for a cheap GC8 wagon last year. Ended up buying a used GT

Since the usual botton that takes me back to my Crew discussions has vaporized and I can't find them anywhere...... tum de dum dum...

which button? "read subscriptions" or "message center"?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, none of the Subaru Crew discussions appear when I hit Message Center, either. I'm sure there must be new messages, though.

paisan: more gears allow closer ratios, to keep an engine in its narrow power band. It can also allow for a lower 1st gear, to get started quicker, while at the same time offering a taller overdrive, for fuel efficiency.

I think GM and Ford are concerned with fuel economy. With a tall overdrive, even some 3.8l V6s can get 28mpg highway on the EPA scale, saving them CAFE fines. Even if the gear is too tall for passing (the tranny can always shift down).

Subie's H6 could us it - it likes to rev, and needs a shorter 1st gear to help it off the line.

I guess it's more of an issue on smaller displacements. The SVX gets 28+mpg on the highway @ 3450lbs and 3.3l, acceration seems good too and it's only a 4EAT.

    How are the HIDs doing?

    -Dave :D
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
HIDs, they are doing well. We just need to re-aim them. First they were too low, now too high, also the beam of them is high on the outsides, so we need to bring em in toward the center. But the projector headlights look great with the HIDs. Retained the stock look. Now all we need are some updated 17" rims and no one will know it's a '92.

can't wait to see it. :D
As for a new car, I'm leaning to settling for an OBS. Still haven't convince myself that a WRX is for me.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I thought it would be a Legacy GT personally or a legacy wagon.

    -mike
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
I thought so myself, but the 3535lbs seem to be turning me off.
The OBS weighs 3105 lbs. I could do without that 430 lbs unless they build me a 2.5l Turbo GT :D

wow. I still like it a lot :) We can always turbo it :)

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
paisan: the H6 is torquey and needs more gears far less than a smaller displacement, peaky engine.

The Legacy L is about 3300 lbs, something like that. Get an L/SE, they're a screaming bargain (moonroof, 16"s, CD, etc).

    -juice
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
mike: Post pics of your HIDs when you get a chance!

juice: The SE is definetly a good buy.

HIDS: Will post up some pics when I get em.

H6: Yep I knew I loved torquey engines for more than one reason. :)

get used to it. These 'net guys just sit around and post all day. You'll know when something is up with the economy one day when Juice and Paisan disappear for 8 hours. :-)) THEN they actually work. :-p
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Tis true. I go in spurts. 7-9am EST I post a lot and catch up from the night before. Then around 9 I do some work :)

So I guess the economy has been crazy since Friday, since I haven't posted?

Nah, actually, road trip! Went to the beach again, took Sandy this time. Nice to get away from the threat of the sniper, however unlikely. I waited to get gas until after I crossed the Bay Bridge!

Filled up again before crossing on the way back. I'm not really looking forward to be a sitting target at any local gas stations. Good thing she gets good mileage, at least.

I read about Bali, too. Looks like Al Queda is linked, and at least that country will start taking terrorism more seriously now.

my daughter came home last week from college. She had her mid-semester break. She left to go back Sunday. I took her Prelude to get gas before she left. This is the first time I've ever carefully positioned my car, and myself, while filling up—and looking very carefully at cars on the road, and parked. It's freaky, for sure...

We told her not to stop until she was well past Richmond.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yup. Up in your neck of the woods you're probably OK, until you get close to I-70 I guess.

Sandy's tank is full and I hope they catch the guy before I need gas again. I'm strategically using both cars to use up all the gas already in their tanks!

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Sheez, that's just awful. I really hope they catch the person or people behind all of this madness. Having just been in that part of the country, I know how its freaking everyone out.

    Hang in there, guys.

Howard County Maryland, all the schools are in a lockdown. My next door neighbor is an elementary school teacher at a school that's one mile from where I live. The school doors are locked, and none of the kids can go outside to play.

Many after school activities such as football games are canceled until further notice. High school football players, who are counting on football scholarships are in jeopardy, in that college football scouts can't watch them play. It's really having domino effect on everyone within a 50 mile radius of Washington.

I'm shopping for a compound miter saw and a cordless impact driver. Settled on the Makita LS1013 - 10" Slide Dual Compound Miter Saw but can't decide between the Makita 6916DWDE and the BTD120SA Impact Driver. The BTD120SA uses Makita's new Makstar charging system. Anyone have experience with any of these tools. Need to build a new workbench and storage unit for my GT's garage,

They are having indoor PE, and even Football practice indoors. Pretty crazy. Most games were cancelled, and field trips and visiting tourists have also cancelled their plans.

    Power tools. Yum. :-)

    bit,

I don't know the exact models your looking at, but Makita makes great cordless tools.

I have 14.4 drill/driver and it has outlasted my Milwaukee cordless drill already. My Dad's Dewalt died about as fast as my Milwaukee did, so I'm not real impressed with them. Actually his cheap (~$60) BD Firestorm cordless drill has done very well considering price paid.

Speaking of DC, I'm scheduled to be there next week for a conference (Sun thru Tues). Anybody up for lunch or dinner?

    -Frank P.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Sure, as long as it's inside! :oO

My schedule is wide open, wanna do lunch Monday or Tuesday? Or we could make it a happy hour some where.

Wanna come, Mike? Bob? If you guys come down, we can be flexible about the time.

Edmunds review of the Ion was just posted.

I hate that center pod, they are totally stupid. The Echo sells poorly so WHAT were they thinking?

It does have a accessory power delay after you remove the key, and a 5 speed auto. Some interesting features even high-end Subies still lack.

Pick a time and place. I don't see any problems at the moment (as long as I don't have to stand in any one place long enough to be shot).

We seem to always meet up at Farragut West, there are a few places there.

Quigley's is right above the Metro, not too much of a walk.

Szechuan Pavilion is also in the same building, in fact you don't even have to go outside at all.

Then there's El Chalan, a Chilean place, but that's a block or two walk.

You guys like Chinese? I eat at the Szechuan place every Thursday, and they've never let me down, plus it's the safest, considering.

If we can't decide, there is a big food court right there as well, we could grab whatever. They have a nice Cuban place with some good cheap eats.

Well then, how about meeting Tuesday for lunch at the Farragut West station?

    -Frank P.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Farragut West, that's on the Red Line if I recall (or is that Farragut North?).

Juice, why don't you decide, since you're the most familiar with that area.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    F. West on the Blue/Orange. Farragut North is on the Red Line, but it's kind of a hike for me, and I'm not familiar with too many restaurants around there.

From the red line you get off at Metro Center, go down stairs and take the Blue or Orange towards Virginia for 2 stops.

We could even be spontaneous - meet at the Metro exit (18th street) and then go to any of the above. Or let's let Frank choose since he's the out of towner.

I'm up for Chilean if anyone else is. I don't mind a walk.. The sniper has concentrated on the burbs (the sole DC shooting was the northern-most tip of DC, bordering Montgomery County). I think downtown DC is safe (especially post 9-11) but I understand if others don't feel the same way.

Farragut West Metro it is. What time? And we're talking next Tuesday, right?

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Actually, yeah, that area is heavily congested so he ain't going nowhere if he's trying to escape.

Still, you try to limit your exposure. It's not far though.

Edit: Frank - here is your hotel? Where is your training site?

I'm in the middle of a week off because I had to "use it or loose it" before my anniversary (11/1). So far I've cleaned the house, done some yard work, and today I rode dirtbikes with my dad after he took the day off.

the weather was brisk, might've reached 50-55ish. mostly cloudy and it sprinkled a bit, and of course there is always the wind in Kansas.

anyway, we drove 130 miles to Milford Lake where they had a ~600 acre off-road recreational vehicle park. there was a small "track" but it was pretty mild, no big jumps at all, and a LOT of "woods" riding in and among the hills.

we took turns on the bikes, but I mostly rode a Yamaha YZ250 (a 218lb, 43HP 2-stroke motorcrosser) and my dad mostly rode the new bike, a Honda XR650R (a 275lb, now 60HP four-stroke enduro).

neither is much of a "woods" type bike and some of these trails were pretty um, interesting with roots, large rocks, sand, small stumps, logs you name it. And hillclimbs between 45 and 60 degrees.

Going up one of said hillclimbs on the XR650, I was dismayed to find a double-jump at the top. I wasn't going fast enough to clear it, and too fast to stop at the top of this ~20' hillclimb. Result: front tire smacked the leading edge of the second "surprise!" jump, roughly bouncing the front of the bike up and , unfortunately for me, off the beaten path right into a small tree.

Being only 1.5" diameter or so, this tree was no match for 450lb of me + motorcycle, but it did pitch the bike to the right and it got away from me... still going uphill. I tumbled down to the right and hoped the bike would miss me.

No such luck-- the bike tumbled 180 degrees and the left side of it landed very heavily on top of me. It partially knocked the wind out of me but I got out from under it in a few seconds. I then thought about picking the bike up, but decided instead to just sit down and catch my breath. About a minute later, I decide nothing's broken thus I'm not hurt.

Turns out, those four-stroke dirtbikes are pretty darned hard to start if they flood. So after I pick myself up and my dad gets turned around and next to me on the trail, we each take turns trying to kick start it and after about 10 minutes I finally succeed. Kept riding for another hour or so, and then several other 30-45 minute sessions the rest of the day.

If you read this far, yes I'm fine. Sorta. If I have bad bruises maybe I'll post pics tomorrow. Don't think I cracked any ribs...

Bruises I bet! I'm no doctor, but your self diagnosis sounds ok. A little Advil to help the soreness wouldn't hurt either.
