Save the money on Monsoon and put it into aftermarket equipment. I have the Monsoon only because it came with the only car I could get at the time (inventory on 2001.5's was skinny in early April in NE). If I could have, I would have deleted the radio altogether, but that's not an option.

Monsoon is rated at 200 watts, but the amp is driving way too many speakers. For aftermarket, check out the new Sony Explod series. I have 2 of the amps (140 watts@2 ohms and 280 bridged) and they produce nice clean sound.

What did that cost including Install labor?
  • pmusillipmusilli Member Posts: 2
Did you replace the speakers in your VW as well? Are the speakers that come with the Monsoon system the same that come with the standard radio? Thanks...

Purchased new 02 Passat wagon GLX. I heard that the car has a dust filter for the A/C system but I cannot locate any info. on it in the the book. Anyone know where this filter is and how to change it? Are ther any web sites to purchase VW parts without going through the dealer? Thanks
  • mikeg61mikeg61 Member Posts: 28
I haven't swapped the amp out yet for the VW. The Sony's are in my other car. For the past 5 years, I've done all my own installs, so cost isn't going to be an issue, outside of the product. The trick with the Monsoon is going to be the wiring, since the amp is in the pocket above the CD changer in the back, and the wiring block is pretty complicated. I'll let you know how I make out. This is going to be a late fall project.

My point was that I am perfectly well aware of the fact that the
Monsoon sound system is not the be all and end all in mobile
sound, but the fact that it is very nice for something that is very,
very inexpensive...You know very well what a 4 Channel ADS or NAK
Amp costs, not to mention CrossOvers & seperates...The wire for a really
great mobile sound system costs more than the Monsoon option...

i can recommend getting your CDchanger (panasonic cx-dp610 + pie vw/pc-pan6 adaptor) from LOGJAM electronics (Indiana). get an extra 6-cassette cartridge too (panasonic ca-mp600). cost of items is $196 + $50 + $20. no tax for out-of-staters and NO shipping charge either (puchases over $200).

very easy to install. there are instructions posted elsewhere in this forum.

FYI. There's an interesting thread going on on the VW Vortex web site, where somebody has figured out that the "amp" that is purported to be 200 watts is actually a crossover, so the power driving the speakers is actually coming out of the head unit. While this may be fine for most people, there are those of us who like it louder and this doesn't do it, which is why I'm looking at aftermarket amps. Also, it makes you wonder about the marketing department at the company manufacturing Monsoon. Just my .02.

If you open the trunk of any Monsoon equipped Sedan and look inside to
the upper right you will see a very seperate Amp...If you open the CD Changer
compartment of any Variant you will find the Amp.

What is unique about the Monsoon System is that it is 8 Channels &
    is *Actively Crossed*...www.monsoonpower.com

You cannot believe something just because of some post in a thread
and making a judgment without looking a little further into the statement...
    Check things out!!!

Has anybody changed a brake light bulb on the wagon? (2000 GLS) The owner's manual says to take it to VW (NOT!) I looked inside the compartment where the bulbs should be, and it's all enclosed. before I start disassembly, I figured maybe I'd check to see if there are any secrets.

The car is essentially the same as the 2000. You'll love it.

I'm in the market for either a base Passat 1.8T (170 HP) or a loaded Jetta 1.8T (180HP) both are wagons and with Auto. trans. Tiptronic. However, can anyone offer their opinions on which one is better, Passat or Jetta? and how come the Passat 1.8T has 10 HP less than the Jetta 1.8T (don't they have the same engine)??? Thanks!
  • glxwagon4moglxwagon4mo Member Posts: 121
I didn't think the Jetta wagons with the 1.8T engines were available in the US yet. You can only get the 2.0 4-cyl 115hp engine OR the 2.8L VR6 174hp engine.

  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
Your decision will probably end being based up on usable
space...Jetta Wagon great for single person that is active &
always on the go...plenty of room for stuff...The Passat, on the
other hand is much more * Family Oriented* with not only the
normal additional Space, but comfortable Passaenger seating
in the back seat, which is not necessarily the case with the Jetta.

Both engines have the same HP!!! Passat has been rated lower simply
to provide some marketing differentiation for Audi A4...
  • glxwagon4moglxwagon4mo Member Posts: 121
Is the 1.8T now available on the Jetta Wagon???
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
Yes, but no Tiptronic option available as of this writing...will check
again on Tuesday though just to make sure...The Order Guide that I have
here at home was the very 1st to be published in early July, but the 180 Turbo
is there Model Code 1J65P8...It is important to remember that this is really
a Bora Wagon with US specs & a Jetta name plate...and even a small cost
savings is important...More on this on Tues.

I noticed that you drive a 97 Subaru. Any reason why you did not check out the new LLBean or VDC from Subaru? It would seem that if you do a lot of back roads that the Subaru H-6 may be an option. May not be as much fun to drive as the Passat but more ground clearance. Subaru's as VW's have changed in the past several years. Just a thought...

I have been shopping relentlessly for a wagon and thanks in part to all your comments, have probably decided on a 2002 GLX wagon. Problem is I don't need the car until spring 2002 and have heard I might have trouble finding one then. One dealer told me that the last shipment of 2002's will come to my area (West Coast) in October 2001. Is this true?
Also has anyone tried or succeeded in using the Costco auto purchase program to get a Passat Wagon? What was the pricing like? I have gotten a multitude of different answers and nonanswers to this question from dealers. Thanks.

Anyone know when 2002 Passat pricing info will be posted on edmunds.com?

New vehicle information is handled through Edmunds' editorial staff. You may want to try contacting them directly with your question; you'll find information (email/contact links) on this page. Good luck. ;-)

from what i understand no change in prices from the 2001.5 to 2002 models.....
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
www.kbb.com has 2002 pricing info now.

Anybody got any firm info on the rumored switchover to a standard in-dash CD on the 2002s? KBB is showing that it should be in week 32 (2nd week Aug) and later builds, another post (forget where) said week 34 (4th week Aug). All the 2002s on my dealer lots have the old CD-ready system.

I've also heard that the new CD player has knobs for tuning and tone adjustments rather than switches. The Moonson radio in the 2002 GLX wagon I drove today was difficult to use. (Of course, the salesperson knew nothing about what might be coming.)

The 1.8T Engine is the same in both the Passat GLS & Jetta GLS. Officially, the engine is listed at 170bhp, but I've read articles in the leading car magazines that have said the engine really makes 180bhp, same as the base Audi TT. They only list it at 170bhp in the volkswagen models to make it seem like the more expensive TT has a bigger engine - or something to that effect.
However, as glxwagon4mo (message #469) indicated, the Jetta Wagon is not available with the 1.8T engine yet. You are going to have to wait awhile if you want that engine with that particular model.

I have read a couple of articles (one in Car & Driver) about Autothority's performance chip for Audi / VW's 1.8T engine. It got favorable reviews by Car & Driver but I am wondering if anyone out there has had their Passat (1998 or newer) equipped with this engine chip and what their impressions are?

I own a 1999 Passat Wagon 1.8T GLS with a 5-speed manual transmission, and I have been thinking about getting one of these performance chips.

I've got a different question for you folks...

We are considering the Passat Wagon, along with other contenders, for our next auto.

I am colorblind, and have extreme difficulty reading the dash lighting/readouts of cars like BMW and AUdi. They are reddish -- a poor choice in my opinion, and probably the same with other colorblind people.

Before taking my time to go down to a VW dealer for a test drive, my question: what color is the dash instrumentation on the VW?
  • glxwagon4moglxwagon4mo Member Posts: 121
the color of the speedometer and other dash lights is a nice violetblue (similar to the default colors of the "read subscription", "change scripts", Message center" icons seen on these pages. However, some of the lights are red: trip computer info, buttons on stereo, window switches (can't recall all of them off the top of my head). Bottom line...its not ALL red, but it still is present.

My wife and I just took delivery of a 2002 Passat Wagon (GLX, Fresco Grn, Grey Leather) and we love it! One thing we're wondering about is how easy/expensive it is to get the european-spec child seat anchoring system (LATCH--for Lower Anchorage Tether . . . something something) installed at the VW dealer. We're interested in using this system and notice that the literature that came with the car says it's "prepared" for installation of the anchorage points (as dealer-installed items) and we're just wondering if anyone on the board has had this job done.
  • genghis721genghis721 Member Posts: 53
Thanks. That's enough to at least take a look. If it's a bright ambber, it will be OK, if not, I'll be heading to Volvo-land.

Too bad car companies don't take this into account...

    pswann,

I found the following information while visiting vwvortex.com, I have not personally checked into this but I will in the near future.

"I have yet to see a 2002 come in with LATCH from the factory, so for all of you out there without the brackets, here's the deal:
Go to your dealer and tell him/her that you need the LATCH system retrofitted at no charge.
    Part #s are as follows:
All FWD sedans and wagons: ZVW 269 001 (2 required)
4motion sedans and wagons: ZVW 269 002 (right side, 1 required), ZVW 269 003 (left side, 1 required)
This is NO CHARGE to you the customer. Dealer is reimbursed by VW through a warranty claim.
    Warranty claim type: SP
    Part Identifier: KIDS 10 000 1
Armed with this info, you should be able to drive away from your dealer with a big smile, two LATCH kits installed and no money removed from your wallet!
BTW, VW will do this for any owner of any 93 or later model that was not equipped with LATCH/ISOFIX from the factory. Part #s will be different but claim type and part identifier are the same."

If anyone (VW GUILD) knows if this information is valid or not please reply.

    Thank you.

    Greetings:

I've been lurking here for a short while. The 89 Toyota has died (hoped it whould last till next year, but...). The subject says it all - I think I'm looking for a more "low end" wagon... cloth interior, auto, GLS v6.

Are these available (in stock)? (I have to move quickly, but, have a couple of weeks).

Hi, does any one know what's the major difference between the Jetta 1.8T and Passat 1.8T, engine wise I meant? Seems like Jetta got 10HP more than Passat. Thanks!
  • bswanseabswansea Member Posts: 10
I've heard conflicting reports about the 10hp difference between Passat & Jetta models with the 1.8T Engine. Maybe somebody from Volkswagen can clarify the issue, but as I originally read in magazines such as Car & Driver, the 1.8T engine is the same in both the Passat & the Jetta. It makes 180hp. One article I read about the Passat stated that Volkswagen listed it as making only 170hp to appease existing, and perhaps potential, buyers of the entry-level Audi TT (it has had the 180hp version of the 1.8T engine for awhile now). I got the impression that the manufacturers wanted to make it seem like the 1.8T-equipped Volkswagens are less powerful than the more expensive Audi TT. In reality, it's the same engine.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
This has been a point of debate for some time now, but the facts
have nothing to do with the TT...It is, however; a point of differentiation
for the entry level A4 customer...

As transparent as this bit of merchandising may appear to be on the
surface, the 170HP rating for the Passat still exists; despite the reality,
    which is 180HP...
  • genghis721genghis721 Member Posts: 53
In our search for a new wagon, my wife and I test drove a few more cars this weekend. We came across the Passat. We were pleasently surprised with the car, until we tried to accelerate. The 2.8L engine just didn't have enough guts in my opinion. To me, the Volvo XC felt like it had more power, despite being a turbo 5cyl.

Still, it was nice enough to warrant another test drive... which we plan to do. Back to back Volvo/VW tests are in order. Luckily, the two dealers are right across the street from each other.!

Anyone knows when, if at all, we could expect to see Passats with the standard in-dash CD changer? KBB mentioned week 32 of production (which is about a month ago). Anybody knows if that change was made or was it delayed? And how long will take to start seeing these cars on a dealer's lot.
We are interested in getting a GLX wagon towards the end of October and I would like to know if we could expect the CD changer.
BTW, we now have visited the third of the 4 local dealers in the area (Hartford, CT area), and while we weren't impressed by the remaining two, this was the worst yet. The salesman was not able to answer any of our questions, showed no knowledge of the cars he was selling and made no effort whatsoever to find out anything. He was totally hopeless.
  • glxwagon4moglxwagon4mo Member Posts: 121
    Izabel,

My understanding (based upon the conversations over on VWvortex) is the appearance of an in-dash SINGLE CD-player, NOT an in-dash changer (similar to many Japanese makes). As for the timing issue, no idea. Hopefully VWguild will provide his insight on the issue.

Hi, am interested in getting a 2002 manual 5-spd 1.8T GLS passat wagon. From what I'm understanding, it's going to be difficult to find a car with these specs on most dealer's lots. Given this, have a couple questions:

    1) Anyone have a feel whether or not I will have to factory-order this car?

    2) If I do have to factory-order, anyone have a general idea as to how long it takes VW to deliver a factory-ordered passat?

    Thanks for any insight.

started Build Week #32...These units are on the
ground on the East Coast and in Michigan...Will
be available on the West Coast in the next week
    or so...

This is a SINGLE CD; not a Changer. A post on
the Vortex many months ago showed a Head Unit
that I believe was erroniously described as a
6 Disc In-Dash Changer, I assure you it is not.
It does not add anything to the cost of the car
either, by the way...at least MSRP is the same...

I am planning on ordering a V6 manual tran. Passat wagon with leather interior, in Fresco Green. No dealer in my area (NYC) has this configuration. My question is since I'm placing a preference order for the car anyway, does it make a demonstrable difference in my chances of getting the car I want with which dealership I place the order? If so, anyone have any recommendations in this area? Thanks.
  • izabelajohnizabelajohn Member Posts: 38
If you don't mind driving to Connecticut, I believe I saw your car this past weekend. We were at a dealer in West Hartford and I think they have a Fresco Green/black leather GLX wagon with manual transmission (which is exactly what we wanted except for the manual transmission!). Here is the dealer info:
Bill Barry Volkswagen Corp. 470 New Park Ave, W. Hartford, CT 06110 Phone: (860) 236-0866 Fax: (860) 236-0398
The guy we dealt with was hopeless but if you know exactly what you want that probably won't matter. Good luck!

I want to thank vwguild for finding me the Passat wagon of my choice. 2002/1.8T/man trans/blue antracite/grey leather int./lux./monsoon. I originally began looking for it myself in Nov00. I had called over 80 dealers in the Northeast with no luck. I was about to give up and consider a different make. It was worth the wait, its a beautiful car which is a pleasure to drive.

    Thanks,

When I opened up the tailight to replace a burned out bulb, I saw that all of the rear bulbs are held in one assembly - nice design, BTW. Any way, on my car (2000 GLS V6 wagon), like all others I assume, the top bulb is tail/brake light, below that is the turn signal bulb, and the back up light bulb is below that (lower inside socket.)

Here's my question: Next to the back up bulb, the lower outboard socket is empty (The lens is red at that point.) What is the function of that socket?

Is that the rear fog light socket for cars sold in Europe? What happens if I put a bulb in that socket?

Does anybody know if the 2002 1.8T wagon are available on the East Coast with the new in-dash CD player. I read somewhere that they are being delivered, but I was not sure if it was only the sedan or both. My dealer in the northern Virginia area tells me that he does not see any arriving for the next few months. I'm not sure if he just trying to sell me what is on his lot.

Also, Do you know if it is possible to upgrade the 15" alloy to 16" alloy. Would the handling be more sportier ?

    Thanks, Tristan
