I decided to get Autobytel involved, while, in the meantime, checking the nearby (within 300 miles -- 82 dealerships!) dealers' websites for inventory matching the MSRP of the car I want.

I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place...we have a 330i lease that expires in about 4 months, but if we wait TOO long to act, the rarity of 03 manual wagons will keep increasing. So, since we'll be keeping this one for a longer time (5-7 years), might as well try to get one while the gettin's still good...

    burrsr--

Your story sounds just like mine, a year ago May. Production of the '02s had ceased and I wanted a 5 speed GLS wagon, to keep for 6-8 years. I could only find 4-5 of them in my state and surrounding, and only 2 in a color I wanted. Also, the special financing rate of 2.9% was going to expire at the end of the month, so I knew I had to act fast! Felt really good when I got mine a a couple hundred over TMV and that special rate! Today, seems like '03s are in relative abundance and that special rate is still here too. Oh well, I'm still lovin' the car anyway!

Cars.com has a feature that allows you to specify a make, model, options, and colors. It then brings up a page of dealers within a radius that you specify (10 miles, 50 miles, 300 miles, whatever) that can be queried AUTOMATICALLY (in one step, not each dealer individually) for availability and a price quote. This looks to be a HUGE time saver, especially when trying to locate a hard-to-find combination that may require querying potentially dozens of dealers.

Recently have had some of my CDs not play so well on my Monsoon CD player. Have a 2003 GLS Wagon. Any one else have this type of problem? Thanks
  • altair4altair4 Member Posts: 1,469
Can you be more specific about your difficulties?
What is the issue - you don't like the sound, the disc won't play at all, won't accept the disc, won't eject the disc, etc? You'll get better responses with a bit more info.

WHile this web site discourages anyone from mentioning dealer names, I would like to solicit opinions on a VW dealer most willing to offer below-invoice pricing on a new '03 GLX wagon in the NY/NJ/CT metro area. Any suggestions out there? Although in theory any dealer should be able to offer attractive packages, I have found that some are more willing than others to recognize that price is an issue for buyers. Thanks.

Rekhev - Have you tried using Edmunds' Dealer locator? You'll also find a dealer locator at the www.vw.com site.

Btw, members can tell you the name of the dealership and the area it's in. They just can't mention individual salespeoples names or link to dealer sites here. Hope this is helpful. Good luck.

    Thanks Revka.
Of course your answer is appropriate and there are a multitude of effective sites. What I was actually looking for was a personal reference on a dealer in the NY/NJ/CT Metro area that will be easy to deal with on a new Passat GLX Wagon.

My CD Players cuts in and out while playing CD's, i.e. like a skip, no music and then music. The same CD's play fine on my home unit. It is on smooth surface and bumpy surface. Thanks
  • cosmo2cosmo2 Member Posts: 61
Jeff, you didn't say what fixes you have tried so far. I suggest the first step would be to use a CD lens cleaner in your unit. You may need to clean it two or three times is succession. My experience is that CD players in cars need cleaning about every two to three months.

Cosmo2, Thanks for the suggestion. I have not cleaned it since purchasing it new in Sept of 2003. Jeff

I just discovered that the W8 is available in a wagon...my local dealer has one, with the 6 speed MT. Yummy! I was planning to hold out until next summer, when the next Gen Subaru Legacy GT Spec B wagon is available here. Should be roughly comparable to the W8, with a little less luxury, a little better handling, but the Legacy should be $8-9K less up front and also better milage.

The last time I shopped a Passat, I decided to go with an Audi A6, and now I regret it...Audi is just too high-maintenance, especially now that I'm out of warranty and paying my own way! I am suspicious that the W8 will be just as finicky as an Audi, and repair costs long term will be staggering due to parts costs now that it has already been discontinued with less than 200 units sold. I like to drive cars 8 to 10 years , which makes me very hesitant about a W8 wagon. Maybe a lease on the W8 is more feasible. Any thoughts or comments?

looks like you answered all your own questions regarding the W8 wagon......you sound like a subaru candidate
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
I agree...the W8 is a more complex powerplant than anything put in an A6 right now. I think you answered your own question...wait for the Sube or buy a Saab or Volvo. :-)

I am struggling to choose the right passat wagon for me. I live in Brooklyn, NY and I will have limited daily driving in the city and the car is NOT being used to commute to work. It will be for errands and such within the city and then most of the miles will be for leaving the city (weekends, etc). I am having difficulty choosing between the Passat v6, FWD, with Manual transmission versus the V6 AWD with Automatic. It appears that VW will not let you have AWD and manual transmission unless you are willing to put up another $10,000 for the W8. I am interested in people's opinions on the necessity or usefulness of AWD in and around NYC, or their experience with the passat FWD vs AWD difference in handling and driving. I would normally go for the manual transmission, but I am hesitant because of city driving, anyone in NYC who has manual transmission your comments will be appreciated - any thoughts on this?
    Thank you.

Hi, I thought I'd post with a short note about the first 7 mos with my '03 GLX 4Mo Variant as I used the boards extensively in making my decision and found them very helpful. I came from a '97 Outback Wagon. I have, overall, been very pleased with my choice. I live in Nova Scotia and drive a fair amount on winter roads as I cart my children around the province to hockey games. We had a couple of wicked snow/ice/freezing rain storms just after I bought the car last Feb/Mar and it performed very well, esp. with 4 snow tires. The car has needed nothing except scheduled maintenance (unless you count the warranty replacement of two remotes that broke the little plastic piece that holds it to your key ring!). My pet peeve other than really mediocre gas mileage would be the need to trip a switch or press a button on the remote to be able to open the back hatch. What's with that??? I can't think of one good reason to require that. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to open the door, trekked around and opened the driver door, leaned down to make sure I wasn't opening the gas door (again), and trekked back to the rear to finally open the hatch. Arrrrrgh. Anyway, other than that it has been bulletproof ... great stereo, comfortable seats (way better than the VDC I tried)and very sure-footed. Thanks to the community for all the posts .. they were very helpful during my deliberations.

and thanks for the vehicle report! ;-)

drjoshua- Sorry you have not gotten a response here yet. You may also want to check out some of our FWD vs. AWD discussions. To start, here's AWD, FWD, RWD - Which is the Best? Use your copy/paste so you don't have to re-write your entire message. You may find some helpful information just by reading through the posts there. Good luck.

Has anyone heard when the new 2004 Passat Wagon will be available here in the US ? I am also looking for prices, options, colors etc. for the GLS, 1.8T, 5-speed. Is/will 4motion be available on the 2004? if so then when and how much ?

Can anyone recommend a dealer in central NC based both on service and PRICE.

    Thanks !
  • altair4altair4 Member Posts: 1,469
I've seen reports on other forums that the early 2004's have hit some dealers...some standard features have delayed intro dates (I'm thinking of the sidemarkers that are going to be mirror mounted). Can't help you on the other stuff.

What a nightmare buying a Passat GLS wagon with manual transmission, leather, ESP is turning out to be!!! I had one salesman tell me that no one over 45 wants a manual (was that an insult?). Can't find a manual 2003 in Florida and there are very few 2004 manuals in the state yet. They say 12-14 weeks to get the color I want with the options I want. Am I nuts or does no one want to sell me this car? I thought that a dealer would search several nearby states to find a car and the cost of moving the car to their dealership would not be transferred to me. Wrong! That's not what I am hearing. May have to buy a Subaru after these experiences.
  • damax07damax07 Member Posts: 32
I am located in South Florida. It all depends on the dealer. I was in the same situation 2 months ago while looking for 2003 Passat wagon GLS 5-speed. I think you have to be a little flexible in terms of options/colors. I do not know about the availability of the 2003, since the 2004 are out. My dealer was able to locate several vehicle based on the trim and the transmission (5-speed) I wanted as far as North Carolina. Following that I was able to select the exterior/interiorcolor, and options I really wanted.

However, I have negotiate the price with the Internet Sales Manager. I made sure that there wasn't any cost for transporting the car from out-of-state,and no add-on options I did not want.

This was the second car purchase we have made, and I was by far the most pleasant one. Overall we paid invoice for a Wagon GLS 5-speed with ESP and Moonsoon.

Thought I would chime in on two issues. Stats: 2002 Passat GLX Wagon with 5 speed stick. Monsoon with CD in dash and a six disk changer.

First the radio. Over the fist six months or so that we had the car, the radio would just cut out. Flat stop working, no power, nothing. I checked the fuse and it was fine, but after I replaced it, the system worked again. After a while it would cut out again. Same thing. After several weeks of this, I took it in for service and they said they were aware of the issue and usually they pulled the power cord to reset it (seems easier to pull the fuse, but whatever). The fix was to replace the system, but VW would only cover it if it was brought in with the system disabled (it happened to be working at the time). So he told us to bring it back in the next time it stopped and they'd switch it out. It never happened again. The car is now two years old and the Monsoon works as well as ever. Weird.

Second, availability of wagons with sticks. When we got ours there were exactly three manual wagons on the eastern seaboard of the US. Three. Two were in NJ and one was in PA. I called on them and the dealers were basically holding them hostage for a big payday (can't blame them really, apparently it's a fairly rare commondity). Wasn't worth it to me to overpay by a couple thousand, so we ordered instead. It took almost four months to get the car in, but I'm glad we did. We got exactly the car we wanted, set up just the way we wanted, delivered with five and a half miles on it and I feel we got a decent deal. As far as resale goes, I'm not concerned. I tend to drive cars until they have little value remaining anyway.

It kind of bothers me, though, that stickshifts are becoming so rare. In my opinion, if you can't drive a stick, you can't drive, but that's just me. The availability of the stick was the final selling point for me. At the time (it might still be true, I haven't looked), if you wanted a mid-size wagon with a manual tranny and a V6 engine and you didn't want to pay over $30K, you had one choice, the Passat. Suburu only did 4 cylinders, Saturn wouldn't couple the V6 and the stick and SAAB, BMW, Mercedes and Audi were all significantly more expensive.
  • 5speeder5speeder Member Posts: 97
When you want to buy a car with a stick shift, dealers say they are "rare" and expect you to pay a premium for them. When you go to trade it in, they'll lowball you because "nobody wants them". GRRRR!
  • spcanfspcanf Member Posts: 5
I am trying to decide between a suburu outback ltd and the passat wagon 1.8 automatic gls. I like the passat- but am concerned about the hesitation upon initial acceleration. The dealer told me it is because the car has to learn the driver's driving habits and that it would go away after I drove it awhile. Is this true or just dealer blarney? I am also concerned about reliability on the passat. Any advice? thank you
  • allhorizonallhorizon Member Posts: 483
    spcanf,
I answered you in the Subaru-VW thread. However, the fact you say 'initial' acceleration makes me wonder. Do you mean when you are starting off, from zero speed? That is about the only time there should not be any lag whatsoever. Perhaps try another car. Maybe the one you were driving had water in the gas, or something else wrong.

There is no question, by all statistics available, that the Subaru is more reliable. The Passat is OK, but not great. It has a good warranty, though, and will rarely hit you with big repair costs. It is usually little things that go early on, like switches and light bulbs. So after the warranty, both can be driven with reasonable repair costs for 150,000 to 200,000 miles, if you desire to do so.

Of course, IMO the Passat drives a hell of a lot better than the Outback, and has a nicer and wider (above the elbows) interior. In the Outback, I don't know where to leave my left arm/elbow, and my shoulder touches the glass every-so-often. Actually, I find the Forester better in this regard.

Bought an '03 Passat W8 Wagon (automatic) 2 weeks ago. The power is great, handling seems excellent, comfort is high. Lots of little "fit and finish" problems, though.

The access plate on one of the chrome roof rails just fell off one day while drivng the car. The dealer had to order another whole rail from Germany, while the bolt on the current rail is exposed and starting to show rust,

There is a plastic piece that runs from side to side under the windshield that is completely cracked through and has to be replaced.

I went to remove one of the carpeted mats today to shake it out and the plastic snap just flew off. First time I picked up the mat to discover it's defective.

When I filled the gas tank with $28 of fuel and restarted the car, the gas guage only read half full. It took an hour of driving before it registered almost full.

Relating to a past post, I agree that having to unlatch the rear door only by pressing the remote button or using the inside latch button is an inconvenience! I thought for sure if the doors were unlocked the back door would also open, but not so. Those german engineers really are too smart for their own good.

Only other complaint (so far) is the lack of storage space. The middle armrest compartment is tiny, and the glove box is not much bigger. But I knew that when I purchased the car, so I guess I must live with that.

The vehicle is pretty low to the ground. I bottom out alot if I take curbs too fast or on an angle.

Coolest thing about the car... the little amber lights that glow down on the console at night. Love that! Also, the W8 engine with its quad exhaust pipes. Sounds great, looks great. Also, with the Sport Package, the tires and wheels are great looking. One suggestion if you don't find the sport package... VW offers available 18" wheels/tires for a premium price that are even nicer than the ones with the 17" Sport Package.

I've had my '99 Passat Wagon (1.8T - tiptronic)since January, and I love it! I bought it used with 50,000 miles on it - one owner, mint cond., etc. I was wondering if anybody who has an older Passat wagon would let me know about any problems they've had that I should look out for. Also, I'm moving to the mountains, and will need more power b/c of the lag I get with the auto 1.8T (I couldn't find a used manual anywhere). I was wondering about the safety in having a chip upgrade (and what kind of chip: either the Audi performance chip or the Neuspeed 1.0). I've heard that it would damage the engine to do so, but I wanted to hear any other opinions because I REALLY would like to have some more power - and keep the car! I love it too much to let it go.
    Thanks!

Answered your post on the Passat board. I have a wagon too and chipping will turn your Passat into a "new" car. Go for it!
  • egraceegrace Member Posts: 1
DON'T BUY A VW. You will be supremely disappointed when something goes wrong and the dealer and VW give you the shaft. AND SOMETHING WILL GO WRONG. My car needs an entire new engine. Is it 10 years old and does it have 140,000 miles on it? No, sir. It's a 2002 with 36,000 miles. Good grief. Give me Japanese or I'll just take the bus.
  • feilofeilo Member Posts: 128
Wow, sorry to hear that. Can you share with us why you need a new engine at 36,000 miles? Would you not be covered under the powertrain warranty?

I submit that something - major or minor - goes wrong with any machine which a car (or a bus) is, German, Japanese or otherwise.

I just purchased a 2003 gls auto 1.8 wagon - which I really like so far - although a little worried from some of the things I have read - trying not to be paranoid about potential problems. I liked this car better than the subaru outbackfor my needs.
I am wondering if you have to hold the mirror knob forward while it warms up mirrors or if it is supposed to click or something to indicate it is in the right position to warm mirrors. Thanks
  • feilofeilo Member Posts: 128
My 03 GLS wagon has the Cold Weather Package and has a 3-position side mirror joystick. Top - Left Mirror, Down - Right Mirror and middle - Heater On. The heater is supposed to have a cut-off mechanism but to be safe, I park the joystick in either the Up or Down positions to prevent burnout of the heater element, just in case.

My wife's 2002 Passat wagon won't start in cold weather. Interior power, but nothing at all from the engine. Of course, when she takes it to the dealer they can't recreate the problem. Has anyone had this problem and found the problem?

    Thanks

  • altair4altair4 Member Posts: 1,469
You mentioned the existence of this on the heated mirrors. What do you mean? To my knowledge, if the rotary mirror switch is in the center position (i.e., not "L" or "R"), and the car's ignition is on, the heating elements in the mirrors are receiving electricity. I think I'm borne out on this based on the number of comments on other forums where people have burned out the mirror heating elements and discovering that the center position leaves the heat on all the time while the car is running.

It's a poor design, IMHO. Either they should have put a timer on the mirror switch on the door or they should have tied it to the timer on the rear window defroster. At the very least, some sort of indicator light that the system was on would have been helpful. It's simply too easy to activate it and forget about it. Plus people's sense of symmetry works against us here...people WANT to leave it in the center position!

BTW, I have a similar wagon to yours. Is yours Tip or 5 speed? What color? Ours is reflex silver with the black leather and with a Tip tranny.
  • feilofeilo Member Posts: 128
Now you have me wondering ... I'll read the manual again tonight and look up the "other" Passat board; I am on there too - same handle as this board ;-) ...

Silver '03 GLS, Wett chip with Tip ("SportsMode-ed"). And cloth (wifey does not like leather)interior.

Hi everyone, i trade my RSX to the new passat, cause the damn weather here it is really need to have a all-wheel drive car. Just one question, had anyone heard about the computer chips for this V6 engine yet? I can just find the 1.8T's, not the V6. If anyone knows, please be kind to tell me, you know, i love drive fast, so ....thanks in advance...
  • altair4altair4 Member Posts: 1,469
Ummm, I think I've read about chips for the 6, but they don't do much. The 1.8T chip gets to play with the mapping for the turbo...cranking add'l power that will exceed the 6.

Basically, people buy the 1.8T for it modifiability (is that even a word?), and the V6 for its smoothness.
  • altair4altair4 Member Posts: 1,469
Sounds nice. Did the Tip Chip help eliminate some of the vagaries of the tiptronic? Did it really speed up the shifts in the Tip mode? Did you also attack the Tip with a VAG-COM (Sportsmoded, as you say)?

My mod budget is small. Okay, it's actually zero. In fact, it's a negative number since I spent the money that I did put aside on something more pressing. So no nice new chips for me. Plus my wife would kill me if I blew the warranty.

Heh, I'll open a new can of worms...so, ah, what oil are you using?
  • feilofeilo Member Posts: 128
I don't have the GIAC Tip chip (although I was sort of thinking about it for a long while - but read on) - sorry I don't mean to "sound" like I do. I have the Wetteraurer ECU chip (best mod $ I have spent, by far). Yes, I did do the Tip SportMode mod with a VAG-COM (the shareware version actually) and the OBDTool. It does improve the auto shifting (but not Tip shifting) to a point where I am seriously thinking about not thinking about the Tip chip anymore. And best of all, this mod fits your budget; it can be done for "free" if you can find a VAG-COM close to you. Its merely reprogramming your trans control module. Check out CB5/Vortex forums or PM me on CB5 for VAG-COM locator ...

Warranty of chipped engines is a touchy issue - if you have a mod-friendly dealer (like mine), then you are Ok provided you stay with the "safe" mods. I consider the low boost (0.8 ~ 1.0 bar) chips from the likes of APR, GIAC, Neuspeed and Wetteruarer as "safe" as they know what they are doing. But, there is still a riak and you have to be aware of it as in everything in life that you do.

Now for the really controversial issue - OIL! I have only used dino oil once (@5K dealer bulk oil change with Citgo 5W - 30) and have used synthetic since (I'm at 25K now). 2 oil changes with Castrol Synpower 0W - 50 and 2 with Shell Rotella synthetic 5W - 40 (yes the "diesel" oil ...). My next 4 oil changes will be with Havoline Synthetic 5W - 40 as I cleared out the local Big Lots at 1.99 a quart (there is a post in CB5 on this). So far so good and I am not dogmatic about my oil like some are - I had someone on CB5 call the Rotella "slop" ...
  • spcanfspcanf Member Posts: 5
Would the chip decrease engine noise? I have noticed that at low speeds, the engine noise is quite loud - not just when accelerating - but in general. The noise decreases as the speed hits 40-50 mph. Is this unusual? Would chipping do anything for this? Thanks
  • feilofeilo Member Posts: 128
Can't say it will reduce engine noise or at least I have not noticed it. The 1.8T is a 4-banger so I expect it to be "noisier" than say a V6 at lower speeds. As the engine speeds up, it tends to be quieter. Chipping will/should not alter this IMO.
  • altair4altair4 Member Posts: 1,469
Are you saying that the engine cranks, but won't start or are you saying it won't crank?

If it won't crank, and you have a "traditional" battery (not a no-maintenance one), the first thing I'd do would be to check the water level of the battery. Use distilled water to add to it, if necessary.
  • altair4altair4 Member Posts: 1,469
Nice find on the Havoline synth. You've got more miles on than I do. I just had my second oil change completed, using Valvoline Synpower 5w-40. I'd have no problem with the Havoline, though, if I could find it. For me, it really boils down to availability - it's either the dealer-supplied Castrol Syntec 5w-40, the Valvoline stuff or Mobil 1 0w-40. Since the NAPA store is close by, I see myself tending to stay with Synpower.

On the reprogramming issue...I've only thought about it briefly. Frankly, I'm not that unhappy with the Tip, other than it's slow shifting in Tip mode, and I'm not often in that mode. I'll probably hold off on that until later. See you around the 'net!
  • rvarnadore1rvarnadore1 Member Posts: 5
I recently found 'Shell Rotella'full synthetic 5w-40w at walmart.....Has any one used it yet?. I know 'rotella' has been around for many years Its very popular in over the road rigs and busses. but in the days I remember it there was no synthetic oils. I bought it and will use it next oil change.
  • feilofeilo Member Posts: 128
Yes, I have used it now for 2 oils changes now. Some purist would say that this is a diesel oil and should not be used in gasoline engines. I have found now problems so far.
  • cpswoodcpswood Member Posts: 3
It won't crank, no sound whatsoever from the engine. She has taken it to the dealer, but it hasn't been cold enough to re-create the problem. And they can't find anything in all of their checks. I'll check the battery tonight.

I tried searching this forum to find the same problem, and there were two others (laurip was one) who had the same problem. But they were older messages, and it is not possible to e-mail them to find out if they ever found out the reason for the problem.

    Thanks for your comments.
