I wonder if I should include my Specialized Rockhopper Sport mountain bike, my Honda HR-214 lawn mower, or my 5'x8' Jiffy Hitch trailer as being in my fleet too?

'01 VDC - Black Pearl Granite (the wife's...)

'02 Impreza RS - Silver (mine)

Some of you may recall my posts in late summer on the VDC board in regards about the VDC getting a replacement engine after originally needing the timing chain tensioner replaced. Well, 8000 miles later all is well and we're still happy.

Did talk the wife into ditching our '95 Mazda Millenia and getting the '02 RS in November. I've been loving it ever since and am almost done with my custom stereo install.

If you just got out of grad school, then having one new car does qualify as a fleet!!!!

As soon as I got out of grad school and got a job, my income must have gone up by a factor of 5 or 6. The emphasis is on how "low" my grad school salary was. Anyway, I waited a month and went out and got a sweet 97 Honda Prelude SH. Monthly payments were huge, but who cares!! That car was a blast. Made all those poor years as a grad student worth it.

Now, a few years later, I am married with a house, a station wagon (my 02 LL Bean), and my wife's sedan (00 Mazda 626). And I am practically broke again!

Maybe it goes in cycles?? I will shoot for another sports car in time for my mid life crisis in a few years.

I know the minivan drill all too well - just finished up that stage of our lives. In fact, the boss was pretty set on getting another mini, but we couldn't find anything we agreed upon (this was for the 2000MY versions) - and we drove darned near everything - even things from GM!

The point here is that the coolest mini I found at the time was the [then] brand new Mazda MPV - a smallish van (we didn't need something Odyssey-sized) that was nicely set up and even had the disappearing third row bench. However, the 2.5L six it came with was a total dog (noise generator), so we passed - and got the OB wagon instead. I've heard that they've now put the 3.0L engine in the MPV - I've driven this in the Mazda Tribute and was very impressed with the engine performance. You might want to check it out.

My fleet after selling my Black Supra:

    2001 wintergreen VDC
    2002 silver WRX wagon

The following is my son's. I keep reminding him I used to give him my hand-me-downs:

    2000 titaniam 360 F1 Modena (his toy)
    2001 Porsche 911 cabriolet (wife's)
1999 BMW M3 (modded for autocross)
    2000 Toyota 4runner (off road)
2001 Dodge 12 passenger van (traveling)

He wants to borrow my WRX for autocross, but so far is only willing to trade the Dodge van.

OK, aside from my bicycles, my fleet consists of (don't laugh) a 1990 Nissan standard cab pickup with 187k miles (and still going strong).

So what am I doing on this board??? I've been saving and shopping for a new vehicle for (literally) 5 years and have decided that a Forester meets my needs/desires better than anything else on the market. The good thing about waiting is that I have saved enough to pay cash. The bad thing is that the NEW Forester won't be out for a while... and I'd really like the turbo which will take even longer.

Well, I've waited this long, I guess I can hold out a bit longer if my lil' red truck can just keep it together.

    2K Outback
85 Toyata Cressida (still a wonderful driver)
81 Honda CB750, 12K original miles. Average about 600 miles a year, all on sunny days :-)

    also,

Kadet LT 40 with an O.S. .52 and under construction a Tiger 60 with an O.S .92 pump.
    So, does anyone know what I am talking about? ;-}

In response, a year ago I never thought that I would ever own a Subaru. It wasn't because they were bad cars, it just that I was looking at a wagon and only Volvo and VW came to mind. But after comparing all three, the Subaru came out the best overall. Somethings in VW were better and somethings were not better. Somethings in Volvo were better and some were not. Keep holding out as I believe that Subaru is on the verge of being the next Honda (in terms of quality, reliability, performance, craftsmanship). After 77K miles on my Honda, things have been great with only 1 problem that wasn't maintenance. I believe the Subaru can do the same or I wouldn't have purchased it.

Since we are talking fleets in garage etc.,

The dream : Mercedes Benz SL600 (mine), 10-year old mule that is deaf (my wife's transportation)

Nay, just kidding, but I'm jealous that she gets the LLbean every day!

Mike: no way, WRX for M3. Fair is fair.

James: can you wait until late May? Then you can sample the 2003 Forester in person, and decide whether you want to wait for a turbo, or buy a 2002 or 2003.

Hi, I'm new to this board. I recently bought a used 2000 Outback Limited, which I love. It came with the OEM 6 cd changer. I can't seem to get the player to randomly select songs when I have 6 discs loaded. When I hit the random button, it only randomly plays from whatever disc that's playing. So if I have disc 2 playing and hit random, it will only select songs from disc 2 and when that's done, it moves to disc 3. Shouldn't it randomly select from all 6 discs? Am I doing something wrong or is that just the way it is?

    Thanks in advance....

I think your changer is working properly. Very few multi-disc changes actually play randomly from multiple CDs. Most, if not all common ones, play random tracks from 1 CD then move on. By the way keep an eye on your CD changer. Our first 2 bit the dust. The first one refused to give back CDs and it was replaced and the second one did not want to talk to the radio (controller). They ended up replacing everything and all has been well for about 10 months.

I wanted to get a K&N air filter for my H6 but they don't make one that fits - yet. It occurred to me that if enough people inquired about it they might get around to making one. It would help alot if anyone else who was interested went to their web site and E-mailed an inquiry about it.

For the 6 disk changer to play randomly between all 6 disc would present a mechanical problem, all the movement currently done to insert and eject a disc takes around 10 seconds. Doing that after a song on disc 1 and going to a song a disc 5, a cartridge multi-disc unit may not be reliable enough. Now a carousel , perhaps.

Definitely be careful with the 6-disc changer, I put discs in only in order ( use slot 1, then 2), I don't put one in slot 2 then another in slot 5 for example. My first changer got hungry and eat a copy of discs up. The second one (current one) works fine but follow the directions.

For the single disc cd unit with the radio, be aware that random play may not be random. It will repeat a song before all the songs are played.

I expect to be test driving a 2003 Forester as soon as they hit the dealers' showrooms. Then I can make an informed decision.

One question... I'm thinking of keeping my pickup because it's handy to have, has been well maintained, and has very little trade-in value. But I hate the idea of paying insurance on two cars when I can only drive one at a time!

Juice, I know that you have more vehicles than drivers, does your insurance give you much of a break on the "extra" vehicle?

register the PU as your primary vehicle and the new car as your pleasure vehicle. You will get a break (pretty big) for that. I register my '88 XT6 as my primary and my '00 Trooper as my pleasure and get a good deal.

As a kid, my dream if I could ever afford it was to have a bunch of different cars. I'm not sure if I can really afford it, but I did it anyway.

    02 OB H4 5-speed - what a great car!
01 BMW 540i 6-speed - in storage for the winter, but anxiously waiting for the road salt to dissolve.
00 Honda CR-V - rarely drive it now - can't compare to the OB.
91 BMW 318is - for autocrossing, which I'll start in the spring. Can't wait.
01 Ariens 5hp snowblower which I only used twice. What a mild winter (so far)

    I might have had something to do with starting this thread so here is my complete fleet;

01 Outback LL Bean wagon (Wintergreen) (Wife drives)
    97 Ford Ranger X-cab 4-cyl, 5-speed (Daughter #1)
    93 Saturn SL2 A/T (Daughter #2)
1965 Corvair Monza Convertible (owned for 24+ years)
    1961 Pontiac Tempest Safari Wagon

    Computer reprogramming;
Earlier I reported that the CEL came on so Wife took it in to the dealer and they said the code didn't mean anything to them so Subaru said to send the computer in for reprogramming. Took the car in on Monday and we got it back last night (Thursday). I cannot tell any difference in the way the car drives. They said it was a code #1443(or something like that). They also steam-cleaned the engine becuase Wife kept smelling antifreeze smell/burnt smell. They say it was residual from the loose radiator hose clamp they found. Lastly, how many have lost the little button that holds the seatbelt buckle tab up on the seatbelt where you can reach it? They are on back-order from Subaru. Dealer gave her a Suzuki Esteem wagon to drive while the Bean was in the shop. My aplogies in advance to any Esteem owners who might be on the list but that is kind of a crappy little car (it only had 17,000 miles).

GM wasn't involved with Saab back in '86. The engine was fine; everything else was lousy. I had a windshield leak that took 6 trips back to the dealer to fix, when you turned on the high beams—the headlights went out(!), numerous other little electrical glitches. Every time I brought it in for normal service, I had an additional laundry list of things that needed fixing. I unloaded it before the warranty was up, thank goodness.

My bother-in-law swears by Saabs. He's had two 900s, and now has a 9000S. He's happy with them. Not me. Mine was the first year the 9000 came out; v.1.0—and you know what they say about v.1.0 of anything...

... my yard, my driveways, my pasture, everywhere BUT the garage... again!

    - 1997 OBW - fire engine red, of course :)

    - 1995 Mercury Villager, fingerprints on the inside of the windows no extra charge (primary kid hauler)

    - 1969 Dodge 3/4 ton 4wd PowerWagon (383 4-spd) inherited from my late father-in-law... good for haulin' grass, junque & such.

    - 1998 Coachman Pathfinder motorhome, Ford F-350 6.8 V-10. Our vacations for the forseeable future.

    - 1989 John Deere STX 38 riding mower... soon to be my 10-year old's primary ride... soon as I teach him how!
