.... Welcome to the world of the "educated buyer" ..l.o.l... duh.!

About 6/8 months ago I bought a extremely nice, clean 98 Aurora with 17k, pearl white, slider, chromes, Bose, etc, etc.

A guy comes to look at it, and declares that the vehicle is too nice and something is wrong with it, but his brother is a body guy and his neighbor "use to be" in the car biz and they will come out and look it over .. after all 3 had driven it and looked it over from the grille to the tail lights for over an hour and on a lift, they commenced to tell me it was waaay too clean, I musta changed all the Vin #'s on the fenders and put a new interior in it and .. I musta paid Carfax not to show the history ----- oooooh kaay.

..... An Audi A4 without the badge .. these are nice vehicles and very popular.

Miles are kinda ok on this one .. but it's got no slider, no cow cover and it's a handshaker, you aren't getting much help, if it's nice, clean, deep in rubber .. then on a trade, in and around the $9's.

    Terry.

.... Wow 14k ..? It's got like nooo miles .. what can I say, if it's still lookin' New new and no paintwork, it's gotta be worth the $27ish figure on a trade .. if you hit Retail Rd on a quick sale, $31,900 in the paper and $29,9/$30,9 takes it home. You kinda got watch these, these carry a big "retail" book, some hit $35+ but you will never see it.

It's a 5 sp. manual, this is one tuff cookie to sell .. it's like putting a handshaker in a Suburban or a Land Cruiser, it gives me the chills .l.o.l..

I don't know what to tell ya .. I feel $37,5 is ALL THE MONEY and then some, they won't do much more than $32/$33 at the block unless the are pre-sold .. I gotta feelin' he got hit with that trade figure and he's lookin" for more, I think $35/$36 is all of it ...

Good luck and let me know .. this definatly has my interest.

    Terry-

I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE V6 Black Coupe with 53K on it. It has power seats, windows, locks. Alloy 16" wheels, cruise, A/C, six speaker CD system. What would a dealer give me?

    Thanks,

    Hi Terry,

I've got a '94 integra LS 4 dr 5 speed that I want to sell in Atl. Drk green ext, beige cloth interior, alarm, new rubber,no slider, no alloys. power windows, locks, cruise, AC.

Newly painted (due to fade) + slight body work to remove small dings, looks very nice but still has a nickle size star in windshield, 130k

I've looked at what others are selling for, but they're all over the map. Thanks again for your help.

Re post 9255: I swear, virtually that exact same thing has happened to me before when selling one of my own cars--it was "too nice", "too low-mileage" (even with reams of service records, etc.)--so the supposed buyer gets even more nutty & suspicious!

Re the stick shift X5: How much more would that exact same 2001 be worth with an automatic? And how much are the "extra toys" worth on a used one: things like Xenons, Sport Package, Premium Stereo? If I could get a loaded X for not too much more than the one I asked about I'd probably be happier. I'm also not so sure about buying one that might be hard for me to sell later on. But I'll let you know if I go see it--

Oh, And do you have any experience with the X5? I've done tons of research but if you have any thoughts on the X5 vs. my 528iT Wagon, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks! Woody
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... I know, people can get a little goofy sometimes ..

The X5's are great vehicles .. Expensive but nice. I have had like 3 of em' in the last 2 years and really liked them, I had the 4.4's but the 3's are fine ..

The difference in the auto and the stick is runnin' "around" $2,5/$3,5 in real value .. see it's not the tranny itself, it's the "Who will buy it". Mom's not going to buy it, Dad's not going to buy it for Mom, the "Exec" won't talk with the office, drink coffee, read the WSJ and shift gears at the same time ... and Mom doesn't like watching the kids, doing the shopping and still working with a handshaker ...

Is the 5 speed a lot less $$ .. yep, but just consider when it goes up for sale .. the market will diminish by 85%+. That means when you go to sell it, if there is 7 buyers in your market only 1 person may be a real buyer for it and thats IF he isn't lookin' at everything else on the market ..

Right now, the market is all over the place on these X's .. there strong. But, I feel if you shop smart, you can find one for under $40 with low miles, but don't waste too much time, one big snow - and it's too the moon .l.o.l..

The wagon and the X is 2 different vehicles and doing 2 different things .. I happen to like the Volvo XC wagon, but I carry a lot of Junk. If you haven't driven the X5, then you need to go to a BMW dealer, drop your license and put an hr or so in it .. it's just all personal taste.

    Good luck ...........

    Terry :-))

.... I really don't have a good picture of it .. hows the new paint.?

Let's just say it's average around the block, we have steep miles, a re-paint, a bullet in the screen and it's a handshaker, let's hope it has new sneakers and the service is 100%, if not start deducting .. on trade side, $1,5/$2,5 and it's a $4,0 "asking" in the paper and take $3,0+ ..

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
... Sooo, we have a 99 V6 GA SE with 51 klicks, lets hope you are a Yankee boy with all that black paint .. and let's pray it's a auto.

miles are way stiff .. in around the mid to high $5's .... sorry.

    Terry,

I'm in the Springfield, MA area, and looking to trade in my 1999 Grand Caravan with the 3.0 engine. We bought it in 2000 when it had 30,000 miles and it now has 65,000.

It has 4 quad seats, 7-8 pass., roof rack, privacy windows, dual a/c, rear heat, keyless entry and a chapman alarm. It's in at least average, and maybe clean condition and we just had it detailed.

Here's what I've found for Trade-in numbers with these options on the internet:

    Edmunds: Ave = 8,523; Clean = 9,484
    Black Book: Ave = 9,805; Clean = 11,060
    NADA: 11,825
    Kelley: Fair = 7,420; Good = 8,635

We picked out a new (2002) Camry, and the dealer told us that unless we were willing to be around 7,000, we were being unrealistic.

We checked on the dealer's Dodge lot (2 towns away) and found 3 Grand Caravans listing for between 14,000 and 17,000 (with between 10 and 15k less miles).

The Question: Are we being unrealistic to expect to get between $9,000 and 10,000 for a trade in on a new car ?

    Thanks,
    George

ok guys ... this may shock you but im going to ask anyway:-)

i own a 93 accord LX 2 door with all the ex options except the sunroof and the alloy wheels.
    it a 4 cyl automatic and ... it has 24,000 miles(yes 24k).

it is in good condition overall with a few chips and dent here and there but nothing unusual and they're not very noticeble because the car is white. everything else is in almost perfect condition.
how much do you guys think i could get for it .. and i mean both trade-in and retail.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
    Shouldn't have done this...

Drove a new '03 Accord EX yesterday. Now I'm wondering what I could get for my ol' '94 Accord.

    The facts:

'94 LX coupe, 5 speed (of course.)
Black; paint is in better-than-fair, not-quite-good shape. Records up to date, tires in really good shape. Tan cloth interior that needs nothing more than a good vacuuming to be perfect. 117k miles. Needs nothing mechanically, but has that dreaded Honda Fender Rust starting to creep in where the fender meets the rear bumper (I'm sure you've seen it.) I was gonna replace this with a CPO S70 or 9-3; now I'm not so sure after driving the Accord. It'll be a while before the 5 speed EXs (they'll never take away my clutch pedal. Never!) start hitting the lots so I may come to my senses and keep this puppy until it's on life support. I'm obviously better off throwing this thing in the paper down in the college town nearby, but what could I expect retail/trade-in?

Thanks for the help, Terry. If you ever talk to Bill, tell him to get his butt back in here; you're working way too hard for nothing in here! :-)

I think that you may be aiming a bit high... 9-10k would probably be a good private party price, but on a trade, with all the incentives, wtty extensions, etc I think that you may want to shoot for the low 8's, then again you are trading a domestic into a Toyota dealer... With the tall miles for the year, I wouldn't be surprised at their "7" figure... perhaps you should ask terry for some advice on a private party price?

You need to factor in tires, regular maintenance, food fights(interior condition), door dings, upholstery condition, etc.

Of course, the dealer can give you 10k on a trade... price of the Camry goes up... Hate working those numbers... sheesh... you can get everything you want eventually, just gotta "massage" the numbers.. hehe

    hey there.

just a quick one out of curiosity. Was at an estate auction yesterday and, aside from all household stuff, they were auctioning off a few vehicles. A couple of dealers showed up and I tried bidding against them for a benz. One of them won, but I stopped bidding quite a while before them. I think they paid too much but wanted to check my thoughts with ya just for kicks.

No damage and pretty clean, but had some rust starting in the typical areas (rockers and fenders), but nothing major yet.

Terry, once again, great advice, thanks. Esp. regarding the value of a 5sp. X5; that info alone could save me a lot of $$$ &/or aggrevation.

And I will go drive some more X5's--haven't driven one in a while & never a 4.4. I might try to do what I did last year when I bought my E39 wagon--shop heavily in Dec. & start trying to deal the last 2 weeks. (I think you gave me advice when I bought my 528iT last Dec.; can't remember if it was you or Bill). And if I get a BMW dealer to do the sale after Jan. 4 I can get another BMW CCA rebate :-)

I came "this close" to buying a Volvo X-C (the older V70 version) several times before I got the 528iT. IMHO the BMW has a nicer interior & more refined drivetrain--it's "smoother" (it should be, with no AWD to add weight & complexity). But in winter, my attitude changes & I'm wishing for a X-C, or X5, or Audi. I've always liked Volvos--& IMO the seats alone are almost worth the price--literally. (At one point I wanted to buy Volvo seats for my house or something even if I didn't get the whole car :-) And better stereos than the BMW 5 series. Maybe I'll revisit the X-C as well while I'm shopping, & check out the new version.

    Thanks again!

...unless there was something fabulous about this 300E (rust?!?), it sounds like a $4500-ish retail number to me, from what I've seen in Chicago (there's a bit of a glut on these right now). The miles are pretty low, color is nice (did it have leather or tex?), both help. They're plentiful, though. If a dealer bid on it, I'd hope he didn't pay more than about $3-3500.

    .... Your welcome .

I remember that discussion about December .. "the 2 wks of tumble weeds" ..l.o.l..

You have a great vehicle now and all things considered, you really haven't lost any money cuz' the wagon market is "up and runnin'" -if- you had the time, patience, the right buyer, etc. you might see $31ish on the retail side, but when the bug hit's .. it hit's.!

SUV's are in a world all to themselves .. kick some of em' around with some friends and such, you "might" like the Lexus RX300, Mazda Tribute, the Acura MDX, Highlander, etc, etc, etc - there's just a friggin' ton of them out there today. But if the X5 is the real deal, then that's the way too go ... Always buy and drive what You like.

Good luck and let us know ...

.... Ok, no one is gonna mess with your handshaker .. l.o.l..

I haven't really taken a close look at the new Accord, it's kinda new Altima lookin' (that's a good thing!)

The rust "might" be sanded down, filled and painted for a couple of hundred bucks .. so, on a trade you might be in that $2,0ish slot, miles are tall ... but, with a college town down the street and having a handshaker (that's a good thing at College) you have a great idea of cleaning that puppy up, do the work and through it the "hoop and holler" paper for $4,5 and see $3,5/$4,0 .. I bet it won't last long.

    good luck ...

    Terry.

.... Do you mean like in the number twenty four thousand miles ..?

    WOW ...!

That's low ... I mean like reeeeaally low.

Here's a lottery ticket waiting to happen ..l.o.l..

Clean this puppy up, spend a $100 or so on a pro detail, do any service it may need, have any scratches filled or painted, have all the service records sitting in the front seat - forget about the trade-in ... get a Big fat daddy Ad in the biggest paper in your area, launch it for $6,950 and wade threw the folks for the first $6,500 CIF (cash in fist) .. that might take a day or so ..l.o.l...

I was gonna say good luck .. but I don't think you will need it.

    Terry :-))

    Hi Terry,

Geez, and I thought I was giving you too much info. Turns out I left some things out...

It's an SE, cloth, not AWD, and maroon. I'm just outside of Springfield, MA.

    Thanks,
    George

yes thats what i meant twenty four thousand miles :-)
... however im not going to sell it:) ... i'll keep it for a few more years and then maybe think about selling it but for now i dont see any point in doing that.
i was just curious about how much i could get on it IF i would want to sell it or trade it in on a newer car.

    thankx for replying.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Thanks for the info George. The miles are a little stiff for a 99, actually there a little stiff for a 98 .l.o.l.. and unfortunately, there not going to be your friend here.

Without putting my hands on the hood, I'm thinkin the dealer is about right at $7 ...

I know it might bother you to see other vans out there for bunches more money, but I will assume they have bunches less miles, plus those are just "asking prices". If yours was super nice, super clean with super low miles like 20k, then the dealer would be lookin' at the high $8's, and of course you are trying to trade to a Toyota dealer and you know how those commies are on domestics. .l.o.l...

    sorry .. ;-(

Thanks for the bad news. It's easier to make a deal when you're dealing with reality rather than fantasy.

    A couple of comments:

    1) The other vans for bunches more asking price had 10k less miles, and were at the same dealer's Dodge lot, less than 10 miles away.

and 2) Then what are the Edmund's TMV numbers good for ? I kinda expected them to be where we'd end up, and it turns out you're saying they're off by 20%.

Anyhow, I appreciate your time and honesty. This looks like a pretty straight forward and informative forum, on a pretty confusing and complex subject.

    Thanks,
    George
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,733
Then I had that benz pegged pretty well. One of the dealers threw $4K at it. I was pretty shocked. Wanna hear some other nice numbers? I didn't check these but my gut is they were WAY high.

'94 Chrysler Minivan - 109K miles. Leather. kinda rough shape on the outside.... $2500!

    '96 F-250 standard cab pickup. 150K clicks! automatic and NO 4WD! ..... $2500!

The way I look at it, with that many miles, that Ford is one lumber trip from the junkyard and that M-van doesn't have too many more trips to the soccer-field left in it. Auctioneers said they had to check those sale prices with the owner to see if its ok. If that owner doesn't take those 3 sales and run like hell, he's an idiot. But I guess that's just my opinion.

Oh, yeah, no pool tables. I'd be playing right now if that were the case. :)

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

.... All in all, Edmund's does a pretty darn good job, this is not an exact science by any means.

They get as much basic info as possible and that changes on a day to day basis .. so you can use them as a "guide" and there is also Ton's of variables that go with it ... geographic area's, colors, options, miles, tires, CONDITION, is it scratch or is it a full blown Dent, is the customer being "honest" with themselves when they hit the AVERAGE or the EXCELLENT button ..

Not to bore you into a coma, but my neighbor is a Great example.! He has a 99 Lexus GS 300 with 23k.! silver, right color, all the Right options, with noooo miles - but, this thing hasn't been cleaned since Jesus was a baby, tires are burned off of it, it looks like a test target for the Taliban, it's been hit more times than Joe Lewis .. but, if you ask him - "it's like New" .. New Guyana maybe. .l.o.l..

In his mind, it's worth $29,0 from all the "data" out there -- that's the reason why he has had it up for sale since July .. nice clean ones sell in about 33 minutes, not 3 months ..

I hope this makes sense ...

Why is Kelly so much less than the other two? I was looking for trade-in value of my '99 Durango SLT+. NADA and Edmunds TMV both come in at around $14,200 for trade-in. Kelly says about $10,750 - and of course, this is what my local dealer says they use. Why the disparity?

If you can unravel that you deserve your own TV show.

Both Bill and Terry have long commented that KBB's pricing seems out of whack from their daily market view. Where KBB gets their numbers is anyone's guess. Maybe it's all the So Cal smog and the long term effects of the Rally Monkey.

I have a 2001 New Passat GLX with 17000 miles. I want to possibly trade in for a Honda Odyssey. My Passat is red with cream/brown leather interior, has V6 automatic tiptronic, sunroof, 4door sedan. Kelly bluebook says I should get $21,000, Nada $22,950. I was wondering what I should expect as a "realworld" trade in value. I should mention this is in Louisiana.

    ..... Baton Rouge ..?

I have some folks that also live in Metaire ..

Anyway, the color is a good starter, the miles are great, it has the slider, auto and the V6 is worth it's weight in Gold .. so if it's clean, still looks and breaths new, you should be in and around that mid to high $19 figure, maybe the low $20ish - if it's puuurffect, a "baby doll", glows in the dark, floats on water ... this one sounds nice.

    I hope this helps ...

As far as I know it was a dealer. I mean, I would have to assume since he pulled up in a cherokee with a big "96" stuck on the windshield and no plates. :)

Well, I can safely say, as a consumer, I would NEVER lay out that kinda money for an American minivan with those kinda miles. Oh well. Different strokes, I suppose.

Estate sales are interesting. I did pick up a small toolbox with a half dozen craftsmen wrenches for $7. There's a good deal for ya. :)

    This is a good one...

I had already prepared my friend for her bad news, as she was using KBB for her values.

Then her insurance company called and offered her $7700 (after her deductible).

I told her to jump on it before they changed their mind.

She said too low, haggled for two days, and is getting a check for $8600.

As you said, it's hard to tell with insurance companies. I'm thinking about loaning her my car the next time it rains.

Its a 1998 Impreza Outback Sport Wagon. 81,000 miles, handshaker, ABS and all the goodies, but no cd-player. Local Ford dealer is asking $8,950 after "reducing" it from $10,950. I was thinking about offering $7,500, does this sound reasonable? Thanks in advance for any advice!

ok ... somebody suggested me to post this question in here so here it is.

from my understanding some of you guys are used car dealers that buy wholesale.

i'd like some price info for a '92 BMW 325is with the usual options and a '93 BMW 318is also with the usual options(leather , etc etc) both stickshift though.
and also if you ever bought something like that.. how were they? any problems?

AND also if you guys know some example of these cars and how much they went for at the auctions you shop at.

    thank you

..... Hi Lawrence .. BMW babe .. huh.?

A Kazillion variables here, whats the history of the vehicles, whats the miles, how did the other owner(s) care for the vehicles .. is the service 110%, is there any paint work, if so, is lookin' newish .. what part of the country do they hang out at ..?

These Bimmers are still awfully popular -If- they are nice ones .. ya know, paint is all there, service history since mile 1, deep in rubber, interior is still lookin' 99ish, air blows cold, little or few dings, dent's and dongs .. stuff like that. It's called the rule of "5" -- does the 92 look, feel and drive like a 97+, does the 93 look, feel and drive like a 98+ are the miles Low for the year ..?

Let's just say, all this comes true, the 92 is doing in the tall $4's at the block, so down Retail Rd., someone can ask $6,9, maybe more. The 318, is doing the strong $5's so on the retail side, $7,9 could be a good asking price.

This is based on a pretty "stand tall" vehicles, with miles like 95/110k. Just keep in mind, they Ain't cheap to fix, ya better have a Tech in Your pocket, cuz' he will be getting into it. :-)

    I hope this helps ...

...... A Sub at a Ford store huh.? Don't see that everyday .. that does seem fair, especially if they have gotten it recently .. the miles are stiff, so I'm sure they want to say bye bye to it..

    Let me know ...
