Seems fair to me. Dealers usually pay about 65% of the price one could get on a private sale on vehicles below $5.000 here in T-Dot. Integras like your run at about $6.000-7.000 CDN, so 2.400 x 1.55 = $3.720 as a dealer trade in sounds normal. I would strongly advise you to sell it privately. You could get about $3.900 for it after giving the buyer a solid discount ($6.000 CDN).

    Cheers!

Thanks for the advice on the '98 Odyssey. I will try to be patient. I'm advertising it on a couple of websites and I put in an 8 day ad in the paper so hopefully that will bring some interest.

BTW, you may be thinking of someone else. I don't have a 75 year old mom, but everything else is accurate. ;-)

    Hi Terry,

Would you still go after a 1999 RL w 20K miles if an accident report shows up on carfax?

    Thanks, Dave

I am considering selling or trading-in my 1994 Camry. It is a V6 and has all the options (leather seats, sunroof, gold package, etc.). I have kept it in a very good condition, since I had a friend who used to work for Toyota dealership. It has 200K miles on it, which are mostly highway. The car still runs great, though. I am in NJ, by the way.

    Appreciate your help.

    Thanks.

That accident is a big "oops" in my book. All sort of "if"s should be considered. First of all, the car would not be worth that $26500 which is retail for a clean car with no paintwork. If the accident was two years ago and there was only a panel replaced, it may still be worth a look. By now any flaws in the paint would have surfaced so you would not get alot of surprises. OTOH, if the car was just repainted and auctioned off, I wouldn't touch it. And last, any significant mechanical and structural work would reduce the value and safety of the car too much to be worth considering. Good luck!

...... I thought this might be too good to be true ..

Ok, let's not panic here .. not knowing what state or area the Acura is from, pull the history records from the service dept. and speak with the previous owner first.

If it's a 5/7/$900 fender or scratch, it's no biggie .. but, if it's been slammed , it's time to say bye bye to it .. A couple of months ago, a nice white hair lady scraped the rear bumper on my LS430 and did about $300 worth of scrape.

No biggie, but the first guy that wanted to buy it said, it had $5,000+ of damage via Carfax and he wanted that knocked off the price -- of course, he refused to look at the body shop bill of $287.39 .. l.o.l...

By the way, the trade figure sounds ok .. I hope things work out.

namrok: If an accident is major enough to be on Carfax then I would find another RL. Minor accidents will not show up on the Carfax report that my dealership uses, only something that caused it to have flood/salvage history. We also run a ISO insurance claims search on all vehicles we buy so maybe you dealer has access to that.

Is that Integra you want to get rid of a stick or an automatic? And what color is the leather?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Every state is different, some won't show any history unless it's $1,000 or more -- or if you live in Florida, they will show the first Love bug hit .l.o.l...

..... Your welcome .. A nice big fat Ad in the biggest paper your area will do a bunch more for ya ..

..... Gheeez .. another person with a long distance love affair - 200k ...? It's going to kill ya.! -- XLE .. right..?

Even the strong get a little weak with 200k. You might be in and around that $1,500ish figure on a trade .. this a definatly a vehicle for - Retail Rd. -

Clean it up, make it look and drive 100%, have all the service records sittin' on the front seat .. drop a nice Ad in the paper for $3,900 and let a real Toyota buyer take it off your hands for $2,5/$3,5 ..

    good luck ...

Many thanks for the input. I believe I will dig deeper into the actual nature of the accident. The RL was originally purchased in West Chester NY and the accident is in NYC ( I think). As for the Integra , It is a 4 dr GS all black including leather. The seat belt on the passenger side needs to ne repaired (quoted $350 max from dealer), and possibly CV joints (should be $300-$400). nother RL is available (99) from another local dealer at $27.5 with 14K miles. Carfax shows no accidents but a failed emmisions test about a year ago. The dealer who has the original RL also has a 2000 with 33K miles. Any difference between the 99 and 2000?

    Thanks , D

    So this is the deal...
    2002 Chevy Trailblazer LS 4x4 11,300mi
    In Portland, OR.
    Options include:
    Rear Air Conditioning
31" AT tires(as opposed to the 29" stocks)
    Cruise Control
    Rear cargo cover
    Vent shades/front bug deflector
Front windows tinted(privacy glass in rear)
    Interior immaculate
Exterior has a gouge in the front valance. Probably needs replacing...

Hoping to get 24k for it, figure a more realistic number is 21,0 ... but hoping for some help with the 4x4 esp w/ the winter season coming up... whaddya think?

I'm going to trade it in for an '03 Accord 4cyl EX-L w/ handshaker Coupe... very nice, impressive ride. I figure I'll try MSRP and they pay off the truck... (think I'm dreaming?) Oh well, let me know if I'm crazy Terry, gotta get rid of this truck so I can buy a house... (payments, gas, insurance all go down)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... You just got this one .. !

Oh well, it's your funeral .. the cheap interest rates are starting to catch up, sooo if this is a real nice one, you are lookin' at around that $21ish figure, maybe if it glows in the dark you "might" see $22 on a trade ..

$24 ..? Yep, if ya retail it ...

    .... What's the difference .? money and miles ..

D, don't get all paranoid on a failed emission .. it's common, especially in the NY area. I have seen the inspectors have the folks run it around for the 2nd and even the 3rd time, because of "their" system failure, besides it's still under warranty.

I have seen a thousand Carfax's, even the junk stuff gets dropped there -- wiper blade re-call in 9/99 .. gheeez.

    1998 Jetta GLX VR6
    -Fully-loaded
    -Leather
    -Moonroof
    -6-disc changer
    -Black
    -58,200 miles
    -New battery, plugs & wires
    -Very clean

How much should I realistically expect from a trade? I'd rather sell it myself, though, how much should I ask for, then settle on?

    Thanks.

It's true, but my mo. payments go down $125/mo, my gas, $50/mo and insurance $15/mo... Just can't justify having it anymore... esp. since I rarely tow, and put it in 4wd all of 3-4 times last winter... doesn't get too bad here in Oregon... Maybe I should bite the bullet....

In English, what Terry was asking is whether you have a handshaker (5-speed) or a slushbox (automatic). Big difference in values here.

He wears plaid shorts. He needs all the help you can give him....

    Hi Terry,

I am about to pull the trigger on a 99 RL all Black, certified with 16K miles from the same dealer. Traded in by original owner who obviously did little driving. He also will throw in extended warranty for his cost ($650 for additional 2 years, bringing bumper to bumper to 7/100K (through July,06). Do you think $27,100 is a fair price?

    Many thanks, D
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
namrok: Is that 'Teg a 5-speed? If so, I could probably find you a buyer. If you are in NY I doubt it's a stick but it's worth a shot.
  • namroknamrok Member Posts: 18

I think it may be an early X-Mas for me... =o)

So far, I have a 21,0 quote on my TB... gonna take it and get it cleaned/detailed tomorrow in hopes of another 500...

The 03 Accord? 750 over Invoice! whoo hoo! I think it's a decent score I will basically be financing about 1,0 over MSRP b/c of the upside-down on my truck, but my CU has GAP for $150.

*sniff sniff* I smell freedom from a 400+ payment... =o) hehe

.... What can I say - the ultra clean, ultra low milers are hard to get and hard to find .. I go out of my way to purchase these on a weekly basis -- Do I pay a lot more for them .. yep. Is it worth it .. yep.!

You can try starting the dealer off at $26 and see what happens .. $27 is all the money.

    good luck ..

...what about that Jetta VR6 I asked you about yesterday?
  • piccololewispiccololewis Member Posts: 9
Limited, It is a 2000. It has 24000 miles with AWD. We are paying 18,000 which is under what edmunds and kelly blue say it should go for. Anyway, the lady wants us to do a courtesy trade. She is buying an Acura from the dealership and they will take the price that I am buying the van for and subtract it from the price of her car. She will then pay sales tax on the balance instead of the entire amt. of the new car. I understand this, but I am having a hard time explaining it to the companies I have applied with for financing. I applied with E-Loan, PeopleFirst and PNC BAnk. I got approved through all 3, but all 3 are a little leery of giving me the $ because they don't understand what a Courtesy Trade is. E-Loan said as long as I am buying from the dealership and not the woman they would fund the loan. But e-loan doesn't distribute funds until 24hrs after the dealership submits the paperwork. So how can I drive off in this vehicle and they don't have their money yet? That didn't make sense to me. People First said they would fund the loan if, it is to a person to person deal. If it is me to the dealership, then they need to change the loan type. I don't know what to tell them b/c I don't know if it is consider person to person or Me to the dealership kind of loan. If anyone can help, please do. I am so confused and no one seems to be able to understand what I am talking about.

I did a final search and found a Certified 99 with 29K that I negotiated to 23.7K, with free state inspections and alternate oil changes. Seems better than 27.1K for the 16K car? $3400 buys alot of gas!

    As always, many thanks!

Terry, thanks, you have been totally nailing your info/advice on selling my '88 M6; I'm impressed. (I had thought maybe it was too specialized a vehicle to get advice here). Saved me some $$$$ as I think I was about to sell too low. BTW, as I understand it, there were a total of around 1700 US model M6's--& of those, 300-400 were '88 models.

bretfraz, thanks for the http://www.sportscarmarket.com tip, can't believe I didn't know about that before, will check it out.

Am chilling for now with the M6, until maybe I need to sell it in order to buy a Porsche or something.......but will use the advice I've gotten here whenever I finally do sell.

    cheers! Woody

    ..... This is actually a re-post ..

    It's a 98 GLX Vr6, it's black and it has 58kish miles and it's a handshaker right ...?

On a trade, if it's a nice one, deep in rubber, little or no kisses, service is 100%, you should be seeing around the mid to high $8's on a trade ..

I gotta quit smoking that stuff first thing in the morning, or my plaid shorts were to tight ..l.o.l...

    Terry :-))

    Terry,

I know what I want and want the best price. Is the end of the month a real motivator? The dealer told me the car has 29K. It actually has 30K. Maybe I'll ask for $100 off their "final" price.

I'll let you know when I take delivery. PS, the Integra I am trading or selling has mysteriously fixed ithe passenger seat belt on its own???

    GoT!

Looking for the trade in value of a 93 Honda Civic DX, It has 159,000 miles, mostly highway. I just replace the radiator, muffler, it has a new battery. I spent about $900 about 3-4 months ago,
It does have a broken driver seat, that is also torn. It is a 5 speed.

    ..... Trading in your Volvo 99 GLT with 90k+, for a 93 Lexus LS400 with 120k ...... Okaaaaay.

You really haven't given me much info on the LS, so here's some ball park figures -- 93 400's, clean, super history, 100% service with miles in the 100k region are doing $6,5++ at the auctions, most folks can ask $9ish for them if there nice ones.

The Volvo S70 is also a great vehicle, the miles here are gonna kill ya here cuz, it's still a new model - it's a 99 .. on a trade, you are lookin' in and around that $9ish figure.

So, if I understand all this madness right .. you might be trading for "around" an even figure .. got it.?

Who thought this deal up .. the Marquee De' Sade ..?

    Terry :-))

..... I hate the bearer of bad news .. but, based on what you are telling me, you got nothing going on here ... is this a hatchback, 4dr, rust, paintwork.?

It's a 93, it's got a few miles, it's a handshaker, no help there .. the drivers seat is busted, definatly No help there and it's a base -- ho, hum. On a trade, in and around $1,0/$1,5 .. maybe.

    Terry.

person who has the car now. We went to her house to look at it. She is getting the new acura.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... So let me see if I got this right ..

You are buying a pre-owned TC from a private sale, not a dealer. When the "lady" picks up her new Acura at the dealer, you pick up her vehicle and they are using your new TC to reduce the difference .... right .?

Ok, no big deal -- This lady must be loving life, she gets the savings of over $1,200 on the tax break, she gets full retail for a $16 van. --- You pay retail and no tax break ... ooookaaay.

If the van was worth so much, she would have traded it and done all this anyway .. she should be "showing" you paid less, but obviously you are financing 100% of this, and that can't be done that way .. just take a copy of "her" sales agreement and fax it to your lender, that should do it, and that will clear it up with your bubble head Lender.

    Terry ;-)

less than what Edmunds says it is worth. Edmunds prices it at 21-22000.00. It retailed at almost 37,000.00 when it was new. It is only 2 yrs. old and has only 24,000 miles and I am getting it for 18000.00. I thought that was a good deal as other Town and Country's we have looked at, at the dealerships are going for more than that for the LX or LXi.
We looked at a 2002 LX with basically no bells and whistles with 30000 miles at a dealership for 19995.00. the one I am getting is 2 yrs. older, but it doesn't have as many miles and it has every feature available plus an extended warranty. I can't see how I am getting a bad deal here.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... No, you are not getting a bad deal, actually its a very good deal .. Me, being in the business, I see all the sides at one time ..

You are financing the whole gig .. right.? Then for you it's a great deal, all parties are doing well.

Enjoy it, and don't forget to fax her contract over to the lender.

I am still in the car hunt! How about this:
2001 Mitsu Montero (Fullsize) Limited, silver, 30K miles, there are only two options available on the limited but I dont know if this one has them or not - the first price from the managers mouth was $22,900. This is already below Edmunds TMV but I am guessin he would come down some. I have nothing to back this up but I think the truck has been there for a while.

First, what do you think about the deal? Remember that this is without negotiating at all. We are also looking at 2001 Pathfinders which, with similar (LE 4x4) would actually be more $$$. TO me the Monty seems like a bunch more truck for the $$$. Of course, I don't really NEED 4x4....according to my wife.

Second, am I stupid to want a car that Consumer Reports says will roll over if a squirrel runs in front of you? And one that depreciates like it is going off a cliff?

    Opinions welcome from all...
