While I think the Montero is fine and unique looking, the Pathy is smaller and more fun to drive with its 3.5L V6 hauling less mass. Both will be about equal off road. The Montero will haul more stuff/people whereas the PF is more like the 2+2 of SUVs; none too comfy in the back.

Both are screwed together extremely well so QC shouldn't be a problem.

The Montero gets a makeover in '03 and the PF gets a complete redo (maybe with a V8) in '04.

My vote's for the PF unless you really need the room and don't care about the HP.

For quality and resale value, I would pick the Pathfinder but I've heard of people frequently bottoming out on rough roads if more than 2 people are riding in it. Have you driven the Montero? It is very slow compared to its competitors (200hp and 4800lbs don't go well together). If you need a capable offroad vehicle for less than the Montero check out the Isuzu Trooper. Its interior is not as modern as the other two SUVs but overall the Trooper is well designed and very well made. On top of that, you can probably find a 2001 Trooper Limited for less than $20k.

Can you give me an idea of the trade in Value for a 98 ford Explorer XLT with 57,000 miles. The Truck has all the extras: AWD; leather seats; CD player; Power everything; etc... It has been well maintained, and its very clean. It only has one minor ding on the hood (estimates to fix have been around $400) I saw that the KBB value to trade in is around 10,500. Is that a fair number?

    Thanks!

I would also help to know what theese things are doing at the block. I know many are rentals.

What do you think he has in it?

....Terry probably shoulda suggested selling this Civic yourself. I mean, 159k=lots-o-miles, but people aren't quite so afraid when they're on a Honda. A few things: do you have repair records (particularly the timing belt), does it have a working stereo, and does it have a/c (as DX Hondas frequently do NOT)?

Kids like the Civic coupes (trunk, not hatch, right?); get the seat fixed (mechanism, not upholstery), detail it (interior scrub & vac, wash thoroughly including wheels and tires, clean out the trunk, wipe down the engine compartment a bit), then I'd try putting a 'For Sale' sign in the window, park it near a high school or college, post a card in the supermarket entrance, put an ad in the local paper, etc. I don't see why you couldn't ask like $3000 (or $2900 might catch a few more eyes), run away with $2250-2700.

Hey Terry. Happened to stumble upon a Miata in frigid NJ.

1992, black/black/tan guts, new top w/glass window, 1 owner. C package, so it's loaded. 5 speed of course (one car at least not punished for a handshaker). presented as nice condition overall, never hit. Private sale (aka the 1 owner).

Only 175,000 miles on this baby (but, mostly highway!)

If it drives/looks as represented (I see it Saturday), what's the enchilada, chips and 6-pack price on this baby? I just want it for a weekend/around town toy, so I won't put many miles on it.

since I got you on the clock.

1999 Lex GS300. red/tan, 40K, at a local used car dealer.listed at about 24K, which seems lowish (but, it is red, and non-certified). DOn't know about previous bumps and bruises.

Maybe I can make it a 2-fer weekend, and really PO my wife!

    Terry,

So you think the dealer's offer of $750 is fair?
  • magicomagico Member Posts: 40
Thanks for the advice. A friend of mine thought I should sell it myself. It is something I will have to think about. I am going to another dealer on Saturday and I will see what his offer is. If the dealer I went to offer me $950 for my car. I would have made the deal with them. They have a simple price policy. They do offer to extend the factory warranty for another 12 months or 12,000 miles, They give you 3 free oil changes, your first ding they fix free, They replace your wipers 2 times a year. They also have a preferred customer card and take 5% off parts or service. You also get $200 toward the purchase of your next car.

    Terry,

Question for you. What is the value of the extended warranty?

    Thanks

..... Ooooh, I do love that color on a GS (cinnabar), got spoiler, chromes, Nak ..?

Miles aren't bad at all, and the price seem's right .. run a Carfax and if it all checks out, this would be a great vehicle for you or anyone -- I do have a big preference to the GS, I just sold my driver a GS430 and loved that dude, now I'm stuck in a 350Z .. ya can't fit no golf clubs in that shoe box.

Start em' up at $23 and see what happens ..

..... Depends on the warranty, $200 deductible ..? $50 ? $0.! ? is it good "immediately" in Kansas or Portland, does it cover all drivetrain, engine, all the power guts .? towing.? a vehicle, if yours hangs up.? If so, it's worth around $3/$400 for a year.

$750 ..? I'm not standing there, but I'm just "guessing" .. this might be a real ruff Civic (no power steering.. right.?) - nobody put's $750 in a Honda unless it's been boarded by Haitiens and floated to Miami ..

..... These are funny creatures .. people either look at em' and puke, or they think it's the Mona Lisa, there's no in-between with these squirrel killers ...

I have bought a bunch of them in the last 2 years and exported them to the, "how should I say " .. to the oil rich. They are doing around the $20ish figure at the auctions for the Limited 01's with 25k .. so take it from there.

Did you miss the miata in the trunk of the Lexus?

I won't even ask what my 99 Max SE 5 speed is worth, becasue I don't want to be crying while I hand out the halloween candy.

My new concept is bite the bullet, take the bath, get whatever I really want, and keep it for a long time. Its only money (the kids can work their way through college)!

    ...... So we have a 98 XLT, AWD, V8 .. it has 58k .. lot's of help with the AWD and the V8 .. slider .?

$400 to fix a ding ..? What was it dinged with, Tiger Woods driver .?

The miles are low for the year .. and if it's clean, waaay deep in rubber and lookin' 01, you should be around that $9ish figure, it could creep up to $10 if it's a "baby doll" ..

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... These are fun toys - but Woooooo, it can get scary with all those creepy miles.

As long as the previous owner wasn't a Dracula and didn't suck out all the life of this one .. it may be worth $3ish on the reeeeetail side.

But don't be afraid .. as long as you don't have a pumpkin head as a tech, you should save it from the dark sides of a coffin.

On the Miata. He's asking 3.3k. I was thinking of offering 2K (the old wave the bills around), since the miles have to spook off ost people, and it is colder than a witches behind this week. Hard to sell a convert when it smells like winter.

    Terry,

I am not sure if there is a deductible. The dealer promo just states it extends the factory warranty another 12 months or 12,000 miles.

someone that i know is selling his BMW.

    it's a '95 318ic with 67k miles color is burgundy and of course it's a stickshift.

hes asking 15k... what would be a good price on this car?

oh btw ... it's got tan leather, cd changer, all the usual options and manual top.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... I'm sure he got a hold of some crazy info, that's the reason why he has it priced at $15 ..

On a trade, he might see $10 and some change .. the 318 is really not in super demand, now if he had a 325 he could ask $15. Fall is here in most parts of the country, it might be 90 in Florida right now, but his vehicle would still only be a $13 retail piece ..

So take it from there ...

Okay, I'm not looking for a definite answer here, just an idea. My boyfriend was out at a Chamber of Commerce meeting tonight and he talked with a Ford salesman about how I'm looking at small SUVs. Ford salesman says he will give me, sight unseen, "low blue book" for my 1992 Tercel. A lot of wine was being drunk so I'm not trying to hold anyone to anything, but do any sales people have an idea what's meant when someone says this, just in a general kind of way? I assume he meant low "trade in" blue book value as opposed to private seller blue book value which is higher. If any of you said this (I repeat I'm not trying to hold this guy to anything) would you have meant you'd assume the car was in good condition? Fair? The difference between "good" and "fair" on kbb.com is about $500. Thanks.
  • sprightspright Member Posts: 18
I've been telecommuting for four years so the Tercel has around 93,000 miles on it, not that I think the boyfriend was in any condition to convey this to the Ford sales person (did I mention we're in Sonoma County, California and that wine was being drunk?) :-) That's just why there's a difference of $500 between the fair and good categories.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... I'm sure a little Vino had something to do with it .. it always does .l.o.l..

Not to knock anyone feelings, but most Sales folks don't really know what the value is really worth on most vehicles.

Are they in the business, yes .. are they on the floor everyday, yes. But there is usually a big difference between their opinion and the UC mgr (and I'm not saying they are right either. l.o.l.) ..

A lot depends on the "type" of store it is, how it's structured and how the interaction plays out, cuz Every store is different. Perhaps he spoke out of turn, ya know, a little Vino, a few stories , a little Vino, a few stories, a little Vino .. we have all been there. I'm sure once they actually get a look at it (sober) they can zero it down ...

    Terry.(hick)
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
...on a car like a '92 Tercel (no matter the miles or the general condition), a dealer isn't going to offer you much on a trade-in, unless they're getting a really sweet deal on the 'other end'. It's too old to sell on a (new car) dealer's lot.

Wondering if it's a two-door, four-door, 4-speed stick, 5-speed stick, automatic, base, DX, color, contidtion, does it have cloth or vinyl, a/c or not, a stereo?

These cars can be somewhat 'desirable' to those needing basic transporation; they're a good commueter/kid car. If it's really nice and the right one (options, etc.), you might get about $2k retail (at least here in Chicago). Otherwise, I dunno?

You were right on the money. I got a quote for 21k on a trade on my '02 LS from one dealer, and a quote for 20,5 from another. Bought from the latter because he was selling the Accord for $510 over invoice(EX I4 5MT Silver Sedan) Total paid out the door for the car was 20,573 w/ ttl & fees. rolled some of the TB neg equity into the deal, and financed MSRP on the car...

Think I should purchase GAP on the Accord for $150? just a question... I'm leaning towards it..
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
...if there is ANY chance you could lose your job (that's what GAP is for, right, covering your payment if you become unemployed? Or is GAP to cover negative equity?), I'd buy it. What's $150 if you end up needing using the insurance?

    Terry,

A friend has a Jeep Cherokee who's lease is coming due and he wants to buy it out from Suntrust. His residual is in the 12K range but he wants to know if he can negotiate it lower:

1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4 door
    2WD
    6 cyl auto
    53,800 miles
    metallic red on grey cloth
the usual power options (ps, pb, pl, pw) with keyless remote
    new tires
looks terrific - no accidents or major repairs. Doesn't even need a detail.
    In Atlanta

What do you see as an auction price? Also, do you have any insight regarding Suntrust Bank and their willingness to negotiate?

    Thanks a million,

    Bret

Hey guys, I have a 2000 Civic Si with 60400 miles on it, new tires and very well maintained. It is black with three very minor dings from other cars. Other than that there is a very small chip in the windshield that I am thinking of getting fixed. I need to know what I should ask for this car if I sell it myself and I need to know if Dealers will just by cars without someone buying another car from them.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Whooo, thank God it's a Honda or you would be eating this puppy .. 60k .? Next time, check out cheap tickets.com, it will save you some Jingle.

I see you are from MI, that's a big save for you on the color .. based on what you are telling me, service is 100%, it's deep in rubber, a few small kisses and a windshield that's barking at the moon ..

The miles will kill ya here .. on a trade, in and around the high $9's, low $10's .. you can check around and see what the dealers will do in your area. I gotta a feelin' though, if you clean it up, make it look and drive like a 30k rig .. you could get $11/$12 down retail Rd.

    I hope this helps ...

I need some help with figuring out what a car was used for based on its Carfax title report. Car is a 2000 Volvo S70, Carfax shows 1) commercial title issued 8/1/00, 2) title issued, lease registration 9/1/00, and then finally 3) sold at auction 10/3/02 - listed as fleet vehicle. I've noticed that several Carfax reports have both commercial and lease registrations. Does this mean that the car was used by the dealership as a loaner or for salesmen? Or is it common to register it to the dealership, and then the lease registration meant that it went to someone under lease for their own use? I'm trying to make sure I know whether the car was operated by one person, or whether it was a loaner or other type of fleet car that was operated by a lot of people. Thanks for the help.

All of that RL talk was causing me to have flashbacks even before your comment. :-) For $24k, I would have gone for an RL instead of the LS.... I think.....

"I thought this might be another 8 month "Q" deal .. first it was RL's, then finally he ended up with a LS400 ..

(I'm sure he will popping his head in on that remark) ..l.o.l...

  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
This has been discussed before so you may want to dig back a few hundred posts to find info.

IIRC, that type of report basically means the car was a lease and may have been titled to a corp instead of an individual. This is very common in Corporate America and is even common amongst doctors and lawyers. My former employer leased cars (Lexus mostly) to all the big wigs but the cars were always in the company name.
  • petepie1petepie1 Member Posts: 25
Thanks for the info, I'll search the discussion for the earlier posts. I didn't even think of cars that are leased in a company name for employees.

    ...... It has a few good things going for it, it's a 4x4 and a 5.9, right color, .. leather .?

The holdback on this one might be the miles, they are a little on the tall side ..

$21,900 .? Thats a great price .. if you just came over on one of those boats, that just hit Biscayne Bay down in Florida .. gheeeeez, he can't have a dime more than $16/$16,5 in it, that's if he lost his contacts. Start him up at $18, start bailing at $19 ...

    I hope this helps ...

..... Hey Bret how goes it .. so we have a 2WD, we have 54 klicks, miles are stiff, color is good and it has eyes ..

Auction side, it will do in the low to mid $7's, it could do a hard $8, if your friend has been going to church a lot.

I have cleaned it up and the interior is in mint condition, no rattles, squeaks or scratches. I am hoping to sell the car myself and I would be happy to get $11k-11.5k for the car.

I have a question though, do dealers buy cars from people with out them buying another car in return. In other words, would a dealer just buy the car off me?
  • cstowecstowe Member Posts: 101
OK board, just an update on my search...

    Sorry for the long post

When we last left cstowe he was looking at a 2001 Montero Limited, loaded, silver, 29K miles, at the Mitsu dealer for 22.9K.....

Well I really liked the truck, they let me "puppy dog" it overnight so my wife and I could check it out in a real world situation....we like it and the starting price is real close to where we want to be ...I figure I wheel and deal for a few hours and even if I walk out of there paying 22,000 I would be OK with it because it is a good truck and I am really sick of looking. So I go to the dealer Sat. A.M. with checkbook in hand (cash customer)..give the guy a list of things that need fixin (most under warranty) and start to talk price...but first I want to see a carfax...wait for it.....the vehicle was reported stolen a year ago.....I say no thanks...they bring in the closer who says it was a husband who stole it from the wife....domestic dispute...whatever...I really like the truck but am spooked now, how was it treated?, what happens when I want to sell it?....I say "give me your lowest price, if it is a screamin deal then maybe, otherwise I walk" they came back with 22,300...I walked

    I did the right thing....right?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Could be very legit .. I have bought a few that way myself -- get a copy of the police report first, ask for Friday, and get the facts, nothing but the facts .. l.o.l..

    Price seems right ..

    Terry :-)
  • cstowecstowe Member Posts: 101
Well, legit or not it spooked me. I think I could get one with a clean record for that price...?

What does having "stolen" on the title search do to the value of the car?

I am getting so frustrated with all of this i am thinking about having someone "find" me a car. I spoke with a guy at Budget Car Sales...he says that there are a bunch of Monteros on the used rental market...I can tell him what I want and he can get it from a Budget lot. (I rented a fullsize Montero in Denver so I know they are in some of the rental fleets)

    So what, I guess I tell him a price, +shipping, +a resonalble profit/fee ($500?)

WHat are your thoughts on this method? IS this better/worse than a dealer lot?

I want something new to drive home for Thanksgiving!
  • ms4tunems4tune Member Posts: 11
Terry, I was advised to give you the skinny on my ride so here goes...

    186K miles
    tan/tan interior
    CD player
a single key scratch on passenger side
no antenna (but the radio works)
new timing belt/water pump and new starter (new as of May 2002)

(the car has had a lot of love)

What can I reasonably expect to get for my car if I sell it myself?
