Couple of weeks ago I asked you for a trade-in value on my 95 Saturn SL2. You said that the dealer will start a $2,000. Fast forward to last Friday, sitting in front of salesman, he says $2,000 for the Saturn. I tell him, (having your info) that is a little low. He pulls a carfax that he ran and says car had accident. This kills the value as well as it's a 5-speed. (Just like you said), Anyway, I pull out a KBB printout that says $2,500 and he pulls out a "Galves" book that says $1,500. He would not move off that number, and I didn't want to leave a good number for the new car on the table and I figured I would run into this problem at other dealers anyway, so I settled on $1,500. He did lower the price on the new one by $200. Wife was tired of shopping, I guess, so was I.
Thank you again for the info. Picked up 03'Accord EXV6 yesterday, want to get on with my life with great new car!!!!
1999 Lexus RX300 4WD, leather, moonroof, Cassette and CD changer in glove comp. Champagne over beige leather; nice condition, but 132k miles. Local Lexus dealer cites oil passage problems with the V-6; says it's worth $8000 as trade, but he doesn't want it. KBB "good" condition trade-in is $12,900. What's it really worth? Thanks for the help!
... Scary isn't it .! ~ and I'm 1,200 miles away .l.o.l.. >tears rolling down face< . hehe.
You gotta love it, I'm in so many stores that I can actually see it.
But anyway you did good, considering the accident, the meat cleaver, the miles and anything else. The Galves book is used alot by the Maine, Mass dealers and I'm sure a bunch in the NY area .. but no matter what they used, you did real good.
..... Start him up at $23, then check his pulse .. who knows, it's the end of the year.!
That darn Maxima, it's the right color, the miles are fine, it has all the right options - then BANG.! you think you are Slow Hand Luke -- it's got a handshakin, meat cleaverin, wiggle stick tranny, so I may be takinng it to my grave.
Well, what happened someone shut the lights off ...?
I'm thinkin' it's worth around the high $8's, low $9's ..
Thanks for the info! I understand your surprise about the mileage! I lived overseas for sometime so the car didn't get a lot of use.I am retired in Miami now. Your suggestion to sell it direct is logical, but I don't feel like it is worth the hassle. I will try trading it in or take it to an auction through a friend of mine. I'll let you know how it goes!
It's a 4WD, it's in good to way fair/average shape .. right.?
Shampagnee in color, interior is ok, everything works - it may even look like it has 75k, is that possible .?
Let's say the tires have 3k left, service is 20k back, it's got some scrapes and 7 small dings that $400 wouldn't make disappear .. $8 grand ...? is that American money .? How bad is the leak ..? nothing that $200 can't make new .. right.?
Sooooo, let me just "assume" it needs $1,500 to make it road ready .. $8 grand ..? did you say this was a Lexus dealer .?
Even if it needs $1,5 to make it right, if the idiot just waddled the RX over to the Toledo auction, he would still see $11/$12 .... $8 grand .? what's wrong with this thing, except for the 130k ......?????
I'm looking to buy a '94 Ford F-150 XLT with the 5.0, tow package, 4WD, power everything, long bed, reg cab, 78K miles, manual tranny in very good mechanical and cosmetic shape, light blue. Planning to buy it in Denver, drive it to NY and sell it after a short time. They are asking 6800, thinking I could get it for 6300-6500. It looks like a good deal to me, Edmunds TMV for private sale is $7,263, dealer $9,023. I'm just looking to break even, but a profit would be nice ;-)
..... The miles are low for the year, it's a XLT 4x4 with the 5.0 V8, it's an auto, Plus it's a long bed .. lot's of stuff going your way here ..
Actually, this vehicle is kind of a freak .. long beds are tuff to find, especially with all the other options you have. Trade side, this "might" see $6 from a dealer ... once you hit NY, alot of folks would be looking for a truck like this -
If, it's as clean as you say it is, I would drop it in the paper for $8,9 and let one of the nice NYC Firemen take it home for $7,5/$8,5 ..
One thing, though, is that it's not auto, it's manual. That's actually the one thing that goes against it, in my book. Not for me, I would prefer it but I fear that it will make my selling market smaller and the value a bit less. Also, it lowers the towing capacity (I'm still trying to find out how much, I'm waiting on Ford to get me that info!) from the 7300 that is listed for standard equipmebnt. The lowered towing capacity would lower the value and also reduce my options for what I tow back from Denver.
Anyway, thanks again for the input and I will report back after all is said and done as to what it sold for...assuming I go through with it.
The RX300 is a '99. The tires are less than a year old. All recommended service has been done by the local Lexus dealer; oil changes every 5000 miles. I don't think there is a ding on it; never been in an accident, always garaged. The miles come from many trips to Michigan's upper peninsula. I don't think "excellent" condition is much of a stretch. It looks like it could have 30k miles. The way it runs now, I would not be surprised to see it go 300k miles. (Is that enough hyperbole?) The Lexus dealer that has the service records is the one that put it at $8000. The whole problem seems to center on the oil sludge problem that Toyotas have had recently. I know it cannot be sold as a certified used car, but it is in extraordinary condition for the mileage. It seems to me that the dealer that has done the service would be the one most likely to want it. Maybe they know something I don't . . .? Terry, thanks again for your opinion.
1999, Black/tan leather, all the goodies, handshaker. looks clean from pics and description. 106,000 clicks in snowy New Jersey. Where do you beg something like this, given the high miles?
... Let's say it, looks, drives, feels and "shows" like 30k, deep in rubber, the guy spent the big $$ for the big wax and used it, interior is lookin' "jam-up", service is all there and with it being black, it still looks gooood ..
It's dead winter, the convert season is over, snow has stopped the golf playing in Myrtle beach .. so what's this little beauty worth.?
I don't think a dealer from Brunswick GA to Maine would put a dime more than $5,0 in it and on the retail side, $7 would be all the money .. if this person is trying to get rich on this one, he might not hold his breath, it will still have 100k on it come spring and 100k vehicles don't appreciate, then of course either do 10k vehicles .l.o.l.
Thinking about trading before the miles get too high:
99 Mercury Mystique GS, 67K, 4 cyl, automatic, AC, PW,PL,PM,Cassette, Spruce green color, located in Ohio. Factory alloys wheels, tires half worn, maitenance kept up, recent new front brakes.
Interior as new, ext. has small bumper scratches, a few door dings, and a gouge about 1/4" diameter on the hood from a rock.
BTW, would it make a difference to take it in as it is now, covered in salt and road grime, in hope that they might not notice the minor ext. blemishes, or should I wash and clean it up?
The miles are already high. Based on my experience selling a Mystique 2 years ago, they are relatively unloved as used cars, so will take a pounding if you sell (especially without the V6). But, a good buy used, and you may not lose much value in the next couple of years.
Thanks for the help on that F150...turns out that it doesn't have the tow capacity I need...I knew the manual was less, but I was shocked to find out that it could only tow 2000 lbs, per Ford. I'm sure it could tow more than that, but obviously I'm not going to chance 6000 lbs with it.
So plan B is the first vehicle I was considering, but passed over due to some work it needed...other than that, it was a good choice...so now I'm considering doing that work (actually my son will, he's a mechanic).
My goofy dad is thinking about trading his 01 Ram for an 03. What's it worth?
2001 Dodge Ram 2500, quad cab, long bed, SLT, cummins, auto, 20k miles (ouch), red/gray, all the pwr toys, am/fm cd, a/c, tires about 50%, in good shape, not great, but good, has some minor dings and the interior has blood on the headliner. Soooo, what's this beast worth? I hope I mentioned everything....don't want to go to my room.
Oh and on another note, I'm eyeing this little car for myself, haven't bought it yet cause I'm still looking.
1994 Ford Escort GT, 2 dr, 90k, manual tranny, sunroof, a/c, am/fm cass, green(teal)/gray, interior is good, exterior was the victim of domestic violence (I kid you not), its got a dented front fender, the letter S on the hood, and a cracked rear bumper. Runs excellent, new tires, new alloy wheels. They were asking $2995 are now down to $2495, I'm thinking more like $1800 - $2000.
The 'Burban is still trucking along, got a new CD player yesterday and the power door locks gave up....guess it decided one luxury or the other.
Jolie.....who is basking in this warm snowless winter and thinking this one car family stuff is for the birds.
Hey guys, this deal is keeping me up at night! Please let me know what you think.
I'm trying to trade a '96 Explorer XLT - Black/Tan, 108K, 4X4, 4.0 V6, all power, moonroof, tow pack, etc., average paint/interior, good tires. Needs O2 sensor - check engine light on.
Trading for '01 Eddie Bauer - Black/Tan, V8, 21K, leather (no heat), moonroof, backup warning, etc. Sticker 23,9.
Dealer (in Indiana) says he'll have to wholesale the '96 - his best offer is 15,5 trade difference. Should I take it?
have had it since new, no dents/wrecks,great looking,150k miles, problems are the tracks on sunroof aren't great and LED display on dashboard computer is out. Looking to sell it to buy pickup (needing to haul more equipment than kids and groceries now) I'm in Miss., anybody know what I should ask and expect to get?
we can call off the dogs. The RX 300 just sold to a private buyer. It was in the local Auto Trader for $12,900; sold the second day!
I appreciate all your help and advice. Maybe this would have all worked out anyway, but getting a little feedback from you made me feel a lot better about the best direction to go.
.... Anytime you go to trade a vehicle, spend the $50/$100 and have it detailed .. folks forget about that 60k, 3 wks of dirty, salty streets and 3 years of getting in and out can do to a vehicle .. as a rule, $100 spent will bring back $300/$500 depending on the vehicle.
But anyway in your case, it's the 4 banger so no help there, the miles are way stiff so no help there, it does have the power pack and auto (thank goodness) and from what your telling me it may need a this and that.
Looks like you are going to be in and around the mid $3's on a trade - Stickguy makes a good point, without a V6 in these you can take a beating, and the miles are killing ya.
What .? - some kind of weird cult thing you guys got going on .. ? -Oh kaaay-
So it's got 20k, it's a Cummins, it's not even broke in yet .. long bed 3/4 ton, Q cab, 4x4 SLT, seems like all the stuff .. it's gotta be worth in and around that $24ish figure, depending if they can get the blood stains out.hehe
Yep, thats about right $1,5/$2,000 for the driver ..
I appreciate the service you provide. Here goes. 1998 Volvo S70 GLT (turbo), 52,000 miles, silver, recently detailed, outstanding condition, charcoal leather, 4 airbags, heated and power seats, automatic, moonroof, traction control, premium CD, alloy wheels, trip computer,no prior accidents, newer tires and brakes, no repairs required. Edmunds tells me trade in is about $13,500. The dealer tells me its $10,000. What are your thoughts. Thank you.
Thanks, that's what I thought on the Dodge. He seems to think he'll get $28k trade....ha, hardly. The blood was from his dog after he had a tooth pulled, guess he shook his head and it went everywhere.
Glad to see I haven't lost my touch with car prices....funny, I'll go on a lot and look at a car, then figure what I think its worth. I'm rarely off by much.
We are gonna be on the prowl for a 95ish Ford F-350 diesel here in a couple months. Keep an eye on the prices if ya see one. Hubby's gotta have a truck, right now the old 'Burban is doubling as a pickup.
We are gonna have a brown Christmas if the weather doesn't change soon. Its been warm so far this winter. We get a little snow and it warms up to 45 or 50 and melts it all. If I don't talk to you before then, hope you have a happy holiday season.
.... I'm guessing, but if it's a nice one, clean, looks like a 30k vehicle, the dealer will be lookin' to hit you at around the $3's on a trade .. but that light will come back and haunt ya.
The 01 is worth in and around that $18 figure .. and he wants to trade you for a $15,5 difference ..?
Wow, have it checked out, thats a Great price .. if the 01 is all there, then I'm sure he just wants out, and there is a 70% chance yours is going auction side .. now until the first weeks of January, dealers will be making some deals that no one ever thought was possible.
.... I hope I don't mess up your dinner plans .. this one has lot's of miles, sunroof sounds like it want's to cough it up and the LED's are singing "anchors away" .. ouch.!
You "might" be looking at $2 grand trade side, if you sell it on your own "maybe" $3 .. unless you have a BMW tech in your pocket someone might need to get a 2nd mortgage to fix this pup.
It's a 98, it's a GLT and the miles are low for the year .. auto, good color anywhere, bun warmers and all the nice things that Volvo has ..
Based on your description it sounds like a nice one - $10 .? - it's hard to find a nice clean one for that figure, it's worth $11 IF, it's all there, you may want to check some other dealers and shop around ~ $13,5 ..? I have no idea were Edmunds came up with that figure, that's a retail figure.
Hey Terry---Just to update you on the 300d. I listed it for 3750 over thanksgiving weekend, on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. I got 3 calls, two on sunday evening, but the guys didn't want to see it, and one on Monday morning and the guy came to see it right after he phoned me. He test drove the car, and LOVED it. Then he offered me $2000. I thought he was just playing games with me, told him no thanks and have a nice day. I think that scared him, so we started haggling, and he ended up coming up to $3650, at which point I figured, no problem, we've got a deal. The only contingency was that he wanted a mechanic to check it out, and we agreed on Thursday, he'd come by the house, my mum would give him the keys, he'd go to the mechanic, and if everything worked out, we'd have a nice check for $3650. Let me stop the story by mentioning that I go to grad school in Boston, but my parents live in D.C. Anyhow, at 1 oclock on monday afternoon, my mum drops me off in the diesel at the airport. I get to Boston, and around 5p.m. I call home just to let everyone know that I'm ok. As it turns out, my mum had been t-boned on the driver side of the car right after she'd dropped me off. She walked away without a scratch. But the car's totalled. I called the buyer of the Mercedes the next day and it took 20 minutes for me to convince him that the car was wrecked, but finally, after giving him the name of my parents insurance agent and the offering to fax him the policereport, he realized that I wasn't trying to weasel out of the sale, and that the car was really gone. People often say that they don't make them like they used to, but in the case of the Mercedes, that's absolutely the case. That car was built like a tank. I just feel sooo lucky that I didn't lose my mum, and hope nothing like this ever happens to anyone. Anyhow, I just wanted to say thanks for your advice on the diesel, and that your advice on the price was completely sound. BTW, the insurance company decided to give us $2000.00 for the car when they totalled it--which is weird . . . I still haven't found the A4 yet, but willl be looking more over christmas break and will probably ask you for some more advice if it's ok with you. Thanks again
Wow, that is some story .. and God bless Mum. Vehicles are a dime a dozen, but you only get one Mom, always count your blessings, thank goodness all is well.!
And on the flip side .. about 2 yrs ago I delivered a 00 MB SL500 to a customer friend for their 10th yr wedding anniversary (it was a secret), he was doing a thing at the Miami Boat show and he was running super late (as usual) to get back.
Anyway, he was flying over the Bay Harbour bridge doing 60+, the bridge was up, traffic was stopped and he was the 8th vehicle in a 8 car pile-up .. he did $17,500 worth of damage to just his vehicle alone, that doesn't count the other 7 .l.o.l.. the airbag was released, he ended up with a broken finger and a cracked wrist --- he actually called me from the accident site and asked me what the phone # was for Mercedes, he was going to sue them, he couldn't believe how injured he was ....... he was lucky too be alive and so were the others, do you think this guy ever counts his blessings.?
heh - that guy should have been calling Mercedes to thank them that he was able to walk away from that pile-up. No one wants to take responsibility for their actions these days.
.... Your quite welcome for the info .. Never wonder what you could of, would of, should of got, always be happy with you get .. just like my great Grand Dad use to tell me - Get what you can upfront ~ and fight for the rest ..
2000 Maxima GLE Loaded- leather, Heated Seats,Moonroof, etc. 26000 miles No dings, Car is in great shape. Am wondering about trade and or private sale values. Thanks Much!! Color is Sterling Mist with Frost leather
It's the right color, nooo miles, bun warmers, slider, seems like all the stuff .. If, it has no re-paint, no rips or scars in the seats and deep in rubber, then you should be seeing the $14's - maybe, just maybe $15 on a trade depending on the dealer.
If you waddle down Retail Rd., then $17,900 in the paper and let Rudolph take it on his sleigh tonight for $16,5/$17,5 ..
Terry, it's trade-in time again-my 4th in 3 years! Anyway, I have a 2002 "X" Jeep Wrangler, 5 speed, 6000 miles, yellow and black (last year for yellow) , soft top, P225 Wrangler tires + spare, CD player, tilt-leather wrapped steering wheel, Air conditioning, immaculate and always detailed. Looking for dealer trade and possible private sale (dealer will play middleman if I find buyer). Payed around 19,300 MSRP was 20900. Thanks a million...again!
Been thinking of getting a one to two year old used car, looking at the above ones with the 24 valve v-6 in the Taurus.
Comparably equipped, around 15k miles, what is the difference in market value here in Ohio? I'm not one to get all hot and bothered over the Toyota name if I can save a few thousand by getting a Taurus. For the same price of the Camry, I'd take a 2002 Grand Marquis anyways, though the garage at work is a little tight.
Dealers here are selling used 2002 Taurus SE's (rental cars) for $11-$12 range, would pay a little extra to get a non-rental SES with the duratec v-6
... The Duratec V6 is the way to go, great motors and will run for a looong time ..
Toyotas are great vehicles, but your going to pay an extra $5/$6,000 for that right .. most of the 02 V6 Camry's are going to be hitting over that $18 figure - you do the math.

Thank you.
It's called the "tumble weed weeks" .l.o.l..
I hope this helps ..
Terry.
You "might" be looking at $2 grand trade side, if you sell it on your own "maybe" $3 .. unless you have a BMW tech in your pocket someone might need to get a 2nd mortgage to fix this pup.
sorry :-((
It's a 98, it's a GLT and the miles are low for the year .. auto, good color anywhere, bun warmers and all the nice things that Volvo has ..
Terry.
Anyway, he was flying over the Bay Harbour bridge doing 60+, the bridge was up, traffic was stopped and he was the 8th vehicle in a 8 car pile-up .. he did $17,500 worth of damage to just his vehicle alone, that doesn't count the other 7 .l.o.l.. the airbag was released, he ended up with a broken finger and a cracked wrist --- he actually called me from the accident site and asked me what the phone # was for Mercedes, he was going to sue them, he couldn't believe how injured he was ....... he was lucky too be alive and so were the others, do you think this guy ever counts his blessings.?
just a dumb ol' story.
Terry.
Merry Christmas .. you did good.!

Thanks a million...again!
Thanks
Toyotas are great vehicles, but your going to pay an extra $5/$6,000 for that right .. most of the 02 V6 Camry's are going to be hitting over that $18 figure - you do the math.
