Need approximate trade-in values on the following two vehicles (Seattle area):
2001 Volvo V70 Cross Country 16K Miles Silver Metallic over Taupe leather Sunroof Basically all options except for Navigation and 3rd row seat Purrrrrrfect condition.
-AND-
2001 Toyota Sienna LE 24K miles Silver Metallic over Brown cloth Power sliding door, JBL stereo, alloy wheels, tow package, etc., but NO sunroof. Clean/Good condition (as in, kid-hauler, but well-maintained)
I have mentioned in earlier posts the only way I can afford a new vehicle is to go with a lease, and it ususally has to be at a least 48 month term. I really looked at buying before I went with the lease, but the closest any of the dealers could get was still $150 a month higher in payments than the lease ended up being. Believe me, if I could buy and get reasonable monthly payments without having to finance for 8 years, I would. I just can't afford $500+ a month payments.
500/mo for 60 months is 30k or about 25k financed...
Bottgers, if you are concerned with the total payment, maybe you should consider smaller cars. The 'treps weren't exactly the cheapest cars in the market, but they certainly were nice full size cars. The reason I say this is because if you don't need a "boat" of a car, you may be able to get away with a Camry, Accord, or if you need larger, even a Avalon. You will pay slightly more for an "import vs domestic" and probably won't be able to get all the "screamer discounts" but it will generally hold value better than the domestics.
It's funny that Toyota is actually outselling GM/Chevy, and Honda is only about 2k units behind GM/Chevy... Toyota is starting to catch up to Ford in total sales... very surprising...
If you belong to a Credit Union, check out their rates. I am a big advocate for credit unions, since they are more likely to give slightly better rates, and aren't as "cut throat" as I have heard some banks can be w/ auto loans. For example, my CU is doing 72mo @ 4.99% 100% financing on MSRP on any new car.
With this rate, you could finance about 31,000 for $499/mo. I know, it's 72 months. Say 60 months, you could do about 26,500.
The hard part I found about making bad decisions on car purchases(from own experiences) is that it takes time, lotsa time to get yourself out. That and not digging yourself a deeper hole.
How did you pull off getting a 2003 accord for under invoice? Seems like not only are those in high demand since it is a new body style, but how can a dealer make money unless you traded in car and got practically nothing for it. I understand 2002's can go below invoice because factory/dealer incentives or just the plain fact they want to get them out asap. I know December is a low month for dealerships, but I wouldn't imagine getting a 2003 accord at well below invoice. If its true though, let me know the dealers name, he might have another customer, hehe.
Because of my family, I can't go smaller. Actually, I need to go bigger, which is why I'm looking at minivans. So far, I like the Mazda MPV. It has more room than our Intrepid, and if I were to go with the base LX model with no extra options, I can get it for less than what I paid for this Intrepid 5 years ago! The biggest problem is still going to be getting rid of this Intrepid.
I didn't think about checking with our Credit Union, I'm a member too. If I financed 100%, I'd be financing around 21 to 22K. If I went 72 months, that should get the payments down to where I can handle them. I have no problem whatsoever financing a vehicle for 72 months. I do it anyway with a lease because the lease is 48 or 60 months, then I have to turn around and finance the buyout and make payments on that for another year or two.
Hi Terry, thanks for the info. No, I dont own all the cars I ask about. Simply passing on questions.
What does an e55 go for at trade/retail these days? Saw an '01 (blk/blk) with all options except PDC, rear light pkg and Nav and 35K miles; a white '01 with all options and 15K miles; AND a Silv/Blk '00 w/ 50K miles and no options...what would you hit these at trade for?
Would love to pick a late model one up at a decent price...
Well it's December, tumbweed time as Terry says. It's a manual (low demand), it's green (color I wanted but Terry says green is low demand color).
I'd imagine there's some behind the scene dealer incentives being kicked back that are not yet in any of the on-line pricing sites. There's a big competition going on between Camry and Accord to sell most cars for the year so they can claim most popular sedan title for marketing reasons for all of next year. Accord won in 2002.
I called all the "screamer" ads in the sunday paper. All were 1 car only deals, already sold they said. This dealer called back the next day and sold it at the advertised prices. This is in Massachusetts.
u probably dont remember but i asked for advice on my burb. I wound up getting $8400 for it. I only spent $50 for an alignment and sold it like it was. Anyway you were right on the money(in regards to the price) i think my original post to you was around #9350.........thanks, dweller
I sold it to the used car mgr. at a gmc toyota dealership to sell at the lot. he said good burbs were scarce and they were loading up the lot now in anticipation of the dreaded income tax rebate check buy-a-thon. thx again .....dweller
Any information on the trade-in value for a 2001 Honda Prelude (base coupe with sportshift automatic and Honda accessory spoiler) would be greatly appreciated. The car is electron blue with 16,900 miles and has no dings, dents or scratches. It looks new inside and out. Considering a trade on a 2003 Accord EX four-cylinder sedan.
Bottgers---- I've always heard not to lease a car more than 2 years or 3 years max! The reason is, is that you begin to put money into a car that you do not own. After 36,000 miles, new tires are needed, maybe brakes etc.
So, the Intrepid that you have, you must have put new brakes, tires and other maintenance and now that it's out of warranty, any repairs will cost you.

Hello Terry, I am not sure if you remember since you help out so many people in this forum, but I am in the process of hopefully trading in my 1998 civic ex coupe and had a few questions. The dealer offered me first 6grand for the car and then 6,500. I am hoping that in final negotiations, he will accept 6,800. Do you think I should ask for 7,000 and then try to be reasonable and say 6,800 or since 7000 for a trade in is a little high for my car, should I flat out state 6,800. Also, I am trying to think of any reasons I should give the dealers on why they should lower the price of the 02 civic. I figured there are many reasons that dealers such as yourself can think of that regular people might not think of. I want to thank you again for your help, I truthfully appreciate it. Happy holidays!
....... Like Clp mentioned ----- No no no no 48/60/72 month leases .!
You could have leased that Intrepid for $299 a month X 36, with a Ghee whiz down in 98, sounds like you got whacked .. leases are ok, but with the cost of money now, purchases are even better - just like Tblazer503 mentioned, it's Cheap money at the CU's ....
Yes, I am looking at a 2002 Civic SI that is new and is left over. The online inventory shows that they have 23 left (most i've seen out of any dealership), however of course in person they tell me they just happen to have only one silver and one black left in stock (the two colors I told them I was interested in).
..... Wow, 23 02 Civics sitting on the ground on the 20th of December.?
I have a feeling you can get that Xtra money for your trade (or discount) off the new one - 23, 02 new anythings would give me the rashes .. ouch, they gotta move em'!
Thanks for letting me know. Yea, they have a lot of them, but not many other 02's, just goes to show you that the SI's are selling very slow. The price I got them down to is $15,345 including destination. The dealership is in NY, but I live in CT. I could not find anyone else to go that low in CT and even better, they only charge $20 documentation fee and no conveyance. Think that could go down any lower? Nothing is finalized, but for some reason before test driving, I decided to haggle. Think I should bring in a copy of their inventory to show them that I know they own more than just one black and one silver 2002 or would that just make them pissed, haha.
..... Nice vehicle, those XC's are in demand, it's the right color, third seat helps, but the Nav is only worth $2/$300 - the miles are nice and looow, on a trade you should be seeing the $26's .. wait til the 90's start hitting, they are gonna kick some butt on the Competitation.
The Sienna should be seeing the tall $15's, depending on the dealers inventory ...
Yea, it is a very strange time indeed. For some reason $15,345 is approx $2,500 under invoice and I have no clue why or how dealers sell them for this price. I could get the 03 at invoice, so I figure this is still a better deal. His asking price was $16,000 when I asked him how low he could go. I assume there must be some huge factory/dealer incentive to sell these that is not disclosed to the public. I wouldn't buy it if the body design changed, but the 02 and 03' civic SI's are identical.
.... If I remember correctly they have $500 of trunk money, but every region is different .. check Edmunds for the region you are in .. sounds like you already have a great deal ..
...... Glad I could help, stop by anytime. I bought a 99 GMC 1500, 4x4 Burb yesterday with 75k, yep 75k. I sold it over the phone for $16, in about 45 seconds ..
...... What makes all the difference on these bad boys is the miles and condition .. especially the miles part.
Last week I paid $48,5 for a brilliant silver with 16k on it, the twin had 55k and they needed $43 to get out of it, I offered $40, we parted as friends .l.o.l.. the retail on the 16k is in the 59ish range ..
Look at the oddy if you want to lease. I personally like the MPV better but the leases on the oddy are unbeatable. an lx no money down is 321/mo ex about 356/mo and loaded up still under 400. and these are only 36 mo payments. If you have to lease over 36/39 mo then it is just to much car. Look used clean DC vans can be had for 12k or less add that in with probably a low rate from your CU and you are sitting pretty. Also your CU might offer there own ballon notes these are similar to leases but the car is titled to you.
Hey napapacoda. I just thought that I would let you know that Honda is currently providing $750 dealer cash on 2002 Civics and an additional $250 dealer cash ($1,000 total) on 2002 Civic Si models right now. This dealer cash may even be combined with their special financing program for one heck of a deal. Their initial special financing rates on the 2002 Civic were 1.9% for up to 36 months and 3.9% from 37 to 60 months. However, rumor has it that Honda is going to enhance their Civic special financing program today to 1.9% all the way out to 60 months. When you combine these rates with the dealer cash and the thin deals that one can normally get on left over models during Mid-December you can get a great deal on '02 Civic Sis right now. Good luck and let us know how everything turns out.
I would look at the Oddy. Doing a quick comparison on edmunds, it looks like the Oddy is a little bigger than the MPV, track record has great resale value, it has traction control standard, engine immobilizer(anti-theft),better crash test scores, and the MPG, HP, etc is basically similar. It does cost a little more than the MPV(about 3k more, but the 5year average cost per mile is the same as the MPV)... It's worth a shot to look at.
Before you get sent to your room, please provide more details about your CRV: LX or EX, 2wd or awd, color, exterior and interior condition, any prior paintwork and your location. Nice choice on the 350z, btw.
before you are sent to your room, Terry will need more information and description about the car.. options, color, area, "good shape" - what does that mean? any dents/paintwork/accidents, how is the interior/exterior? All service up to date? Otherwise he's playing darts in the dark.
What can I expect to get for this car on a trade in:
Nissan Altima GXE manual 12-disc CD cruise moon roof AC power windows/locks 134,000 miles Viper security
Mechanically, everything is fine (knock on wood). The front tires are new (and cheap).
The only eye-sores are all on the back. Some punks egged me in the summer and there is no fixing that (they got the trunk by the lock). And someone also hit-and-run me on the passenger side (where the gas tank would be), however, this is not bad at all. Finally, this one is my fault, I backed into a small concrete wall and cracked the back "bumper."
1999 Lexus LX470; 29k miles; Pearl White / Tan; Nakamichi; Moonroof; Wood steering wheel; Gold package; Couple of parking lot kisses but otherwise clean; Original tires; Located in NJ
based on the description, I don't think the year will make much difference. Maybe 1K by the side of retail road? 2K if it's a '97 with high miles. Certainly not a trade in candidate.
Considering Honda isn't offering any rebates or incentives, and I can get $1500 cash back on an MPV, the difference in price is quite significant. About $5K significant. For what I'd be paying a month for a lease on the Honda, I can BUY an MPV. My CU has 5.99% financing right now for up to 72 months, and they'll finance 100% of the loan. My payments for a 72 month loan on the MVP will run me about $330 a month. I don't mind at all going 72 months on the financing because if I leased, I'd end up going AT LEAST that long before I could pay off the vehicle.
Another reason I'm leaning towards the MPV is because it has a better reliability record than the Ody.
I am trying to sell my 2001 Acura TL w/o NAV in the DFW area and trying to gauge its market value. The specs are:
Miles: 17,500 Color: Gold/Tan Condition: Good but not flawless. Very small dings on both front doors and a small crack (1/2 inch long) in the front bumper. Interior is in excellent condition.
Could you please give me both retail and trade-in values.
.... These vehicles were "fat daddy" Hot, when they first came out .. but now, there just one of many ...
77k will discourage a lot of folks, so $4,9 is a fair asking price .. if it's a real nice one, needs-0-, it "might" see $3 on a trade - and $4/$4,5 is a fair buying price ...
..... Good morning - Yeah, your right, it was a nice, quiet little joint .. Now we Bottgers dropping posts all over the place cuz' he can't figure out why he's flipped in a 5 year lease - duh, duh, duh, duh.
99's huh .? -- well, with 35k they might have $9 and some change in it, so figure $9,5 plus a profit of $400, hey it's winter, they don't want that Rwd in winter, especially in the spring time when you will be able to buy em' at the auctions for less ... with 80k, might have $5 and some change in it, same deal, $5,9 should do it (max) --
Yankee dealers don't make any money with $14,000 of dead inventory sitting around, now $14,0 sitting in 4x4's and AWD's will go somewhere ...
..... You didn't give me much info to work with here ..
Condition, area, color on the I30, etc, etc,
After reading your profile I see you live NW -- Ok, the Yota has some Big, big miles - sooo if it's a clean one, it's not all full of swirls in the black paint, no-paintwork, very limited in the dents, dings, love bumps and parking lot kisses -- Ooh, of course the interior is lookin' 01ish, no rips, no tears, no I weigh 300lbs and the seats look it, service is 95%, deep in rubber.. trade side, you should be seeing the ultra high $13's, might see the low $14's -IF- it's a "baby doll" and it needs --- 0 -
On the I30, the same as above, miles are stiff for the year, might be seeing the low $10's ....
134k ..? -- Wow, what can I say .. your love life needs to get a little closer, it's got Mucho miles, it's been whacked, it's got eggs, it's got nothin' going for it .. gheeez, you got your monies worth (what's your house look like .l.o.l.)
..... Ok, on a lighter note - here's a real deal player .. Noooo miles, Theee right color, Nak and all the toys that go with .. needs some rubber and a visit by Dr. Dent, other than than that, sounds like a nice one ...
This brute will do ALL the m o n e y, especially now (or at least, in 30 days) .. depending on what your are trading for, you gotta be seeing $32ish -- me personally, I would definatly take this down Retail Rd. New sneakers, dent wizard, then in the paper with a Big fat daddy ad for $37,900, then let some nice Christmas Elf steal it from me for $35/$37 ... makes for a nice Xmas.
Laser Blue, 10,000 miles (its been sitting on the used car dealer's lot since summer 2002) 5-speed (of course), all the standard MP3 stuff except...the MP3 player has been stolen! The dash appears to be OK but it is scuffed up a bit. How much should I deduct for the missing MP3 player for which the car is known?
Thanks very much for your help and Happy Holidays!
The tuffest of the colors too sell .. but yours has low miles, it's an auto w/spoiler and you say it' s clean .. - trade side you should be seeing the $16's ..
.... Well, if it is a clean one .. little or no parking lot kisses, no-repaint, service is 100% drives and Looks 00 with 30k, deep rubber, then you are gonna be seeing the $6's, maybe the high $6's ..
